    the 1967 Shelby GT500 is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. A 427 should've been an option...

    • @sirjammer
      @sirjammer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      my Uncle raced a 1967 and 1969 Shelby, both with a 427 SOHC “cammer”. He's told me quite a few times that if it wasn't for Stengers ford and “Ohio” George Montgomery in Dayton, Ohio neither car would've been possible. On a few Fridays/Saturdays my Uncle would drive my grandfather and my-5 year old-self in those cars to Stengers ford and then to “make a little spending money” from a few Chevy and Dodge boys in Dayton...I just wish my Uncle would've kept at least one of the cars, hell even a engine.

      I would check the box for a 427 SOHC engine. If only.

      In 67 it was available, 68 discontinued In 68 427 was only available in mercury cougars from factory.

      Although I owned a 68 gt500kr with a 427 side oiler, dealer installed, because the person who ordered the car wouldnt accept it without the 427 he ordered, he ordered it in late 67 when it was on option list.

      It’s one of my dream cars. My dad has a 1968 California Special. It’s an amazing car but it’s not the fastback so I feel it loses a bit of its charm

    When I got out of the Army in '68, I bought a Mustang GT with the 302 in it...and it was respectfully fast, so I can only imagine the same car with a 427. Wish I had kept my Bullet car :)

    My uncle had a GT500 in 1967. I was too young to drive then, but I got a few rides in it. To a young kid, it seemed like a rocket ship although it probably wasn't all that fast by today's standards.
    His was a stick shift and the thing pulled like crazy in 2nd gear. If you got on it in first gear, forget it. The back tires were up in flames. People forget how light weight the earlier Mustangs were, too.
    None of the 4000+ pound nonsense you see today with pony cars.

    • @duster0066
      @duster0066 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rodger that on the weight. My first race car build (meaning lousy) was a 67 390 car. It weighted 2850 before the exhaust was put on it, so under 3000 race ready with a full cage. I feel there is no excuse for a Mustang to weigh nearly 4000lbs. I bought an 07 GT and hated it because of the weight. I traded it for a Miata. Much better.

    Amazing car. I just finished to collect all the parts to assemble a die cast model of the '67 Shelby GT500, 1:8 scale. It's exactly the same as this, but whit the white stripes. It cost me around 1100 euros and the collecting process took about 2 years. A true legend.
    Great show, keep up.

    In 1967 a bunch of us all bought mustangs. One friend bought the GT500. He told the dealer he wanted a 427 not the 428 and they said it was not available that way however they knew there were several cars perhaps as many as eight who’d had the dealer install a 427 in the brand new car. Big money. Wonder if this is one?

    Carroll Shelby and Bob Tasca both offered the 1967 GT 500 with an optional 427 side-oiler if the buyer was willing to pay the additional cost. How many were built? Who knows, surely not many, but there were GT 500's built with a 427 side-oiler. The video states that you had no choice when buying the 67 GT 500 regarding the 428PI motor, which is not accurate. Some were special ordered with the 427.

    • @wendlormsby
      @wendlormsby 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct, and the de-tuned "W" code 427 was an option in the '68 GT's too. They were no slouch though, as they made "advertised" 390 HP and 480 LB/FT of twist! Keep in mind that they revved it up to only 4600 RPM... I'd say 420-430 HP @ 6,000 RPM which it was capable of, and then some!

  • @rb67mustang
    @rb67mustang ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I owned a 67 GT350 4 speed car in Candy Apple Red. I restored it and had a lot of fun with it, and then I made a big mistake selling it. If I had a GT500, It would be awesome to have a 427 in it with a 4 speed. I wouldn't want an automatic trans in a Shelby.

  • @chocolatte6157
    @chocolatte6157 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I understand that the Ford 427, 428 and 429 were different designs, but it is weird to have all three of those engines so close in displacement from one company.

  • @mustardstain504d6
    @mustardstain504d6 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are three known 427 cars. The super snake came out of Mel Burns Ford in Long Beach, Ca. The problem was the cost. It was 7,000.00. The cost of a 427 Cobra. In stock form the 427 was rated at 425 HP. I have an early 67 Shelby. With a cam change, Ford 427 Iron heads, headers, stainless steel valves, roller rockers and simple durability changes It makes a respectable 512 horsepower and 498 pounds of torque at 5500 rpm and is completely streetable, even maintaining power brakes. There's also nothing to indicate this vehicle was a dealer installed 427 car. The registry shows this as well. Beautiful car none the less, as my Shelby is the same colors with a parchment interior.

    • @burlingtonbill1
      @burlingtonbill1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The "Side Oiler" that he was talking about was the "R" code which was the bad boy that was raced in NASCAR but, the 427 in that 500 is the "W" code, single 4 barrel, de-tuned version of the "R" code engine.

    • @burlingtonbill1

    I owned a 69 Mach 1 GT that had a 390 in it. The big blocks are kind of a pain in the ass because there's no room in the engine compartment. If you want to put headers on it you have to cut out part of the shock towers and to change the spark plugs I'd have to disconnect the motor mounts and lift the motor up and use extensions on my wrenches to get to them. It was fun as hell though. So much torque!

    In so many of these videos that talk about the difference between the 428 and the 427 they seem to always fail to mention the most important difference between these engines and that would be the bore and stroke and hence the difference in where they shine in the RPM band. The 428 was most definitely a great engine, but it's a whole nother level with the 427

    This thing rips! A lot of the old muscle cars on this channel can only pull a little squeal of the tyres & tend to remind you that the memories might often be better than the cars really were. Not this thing! That 427 race motor clearly makes this thing the real deal.

  • @parkerjanelle7853

    I’d take a 428 with a 427 intake manifold, like Tasca did with the Cobra Jet drag Mustangs in ‘68. All the high-end performance you need to run a quick quarter, and enough durability to drive home from the strip.

    Owned #1991 for 24 years so some REAL life experience. Side oiler was NASCAR and off shore boat racing requirement. Just look at the tens of thousands of 390 & 428 that were raced and are still being hammered today. 3.98 stroke of the 28 was a better street torque engine where it didn't stay at 6,000 rpm for 45+ minutes at a time but light to light. Look at the CJ domination 68 & 69. Shelby had made a race name with the 65-66 but they were stuck with what Ford gave them to work with. The 67 didn't hook well with the tech of the day - different now. The 67-68 500 felt more nose heavy than 69-70 chassis. The earlier 65-66 steering col Rally Pac had a TACH & clock NOT gauges so NO comparison and those sucked under the radio. I thought it was a shame that they didn't copy the 65-66 tack mount on the top centre of the dash. Those gauges were as bad as the 65 442 tack mounted almost the same place so Shelby wasn't the first one to make that mistake. In 69 at least the gauges were angled up toward the driver. 68 was a little only better as there was a console instead of being hung under the radio as an after thought. That car is a later production as it has outboard high beams vs the centred (illegal in some states) that all early cars had. Roll bar was a 2 point so something but much more sales and mount for the belt retractors. Upper mount was just a bolt into the sail area of the roof. It was fun - friend had an identical looking red white stripe black interior 350 so when we both pulled up somewhere it made heads turn. And we both had Boss9 so we would mix and match...

      You know all the little shit like I do, and I also really liked the 67 & 68 Shelby's. Only 5 miles from my home boat races were held, U.S. 131 Dragway half an hour drive. I got my driver's license in 1974, and all of the great 60's muscle cars were just cheap used cars. Here's just a few of the cars that went thru my hands - 70 Boss 302, '69 Galaxie XL Convertible 429, 70 Mach 1, 70 Cougar Eliminator, 73 Mach 1, 67 Galaxie XL (2) also a 69 Shelby GT350 From 1974 thru 1989 I had a total of 64 different vehicles (all Ford's & Mercurys, plus one Plymouth, two Lincoln's, and a 1950 Cadillac) I just kept trading and selling, but I wish I held on to just ONE! I also sold Ford's for a good 25 year career, as I won many awards and trips to events like "ride & drives" at MIS with the great Ford NASCAR drivers during the 80's, and events a Ford's proving grounds where I drove with Carroll Shelby and Bob Bonderaunt to name a couple. It was great. I miss those days as they are gone forever.

      Suspense & ESCAPE! I got my license in 72 and I did the same thing you could get a almost mint muscle car for $1500 to $1800 at any new car dealers used lot. I had a 65 GTO as my first car but 6months later I spotted a loaded 69 442 air factory 8 track man I thought I was the MAN in that car. The 442 was gone in a year and I found an old guy probably my current age now lol trading it in at the Pontiac dealer for a Grandville he told me he bought the GTO to pull his 18 foot boat because it had big engine LOL I won't thinks he knew what he had it 4 speed and a convertible. That lasted till I found this mint 69 ss396 Chevrolet L78 with chambered exhaust ! I sure miss those days we had a blast with all our rides! e

    One of the best cars ever made, wish they would remake them exactly how they were and slap a 'drive at own risk sticker' on it to get around safety standards. To the few of us left who still enjoy the drive, there would be no other car that we would buy unless it was for family transportation.
