  • In this video David Alty shows us how to load round timber without a forklift or heavy machinery, using only a hand winch. David talks us through the whole process, from how to position the trailer, logs and winches to how to then load these onto the trailer.
    With thanks to David Alty

This is great! I have one of these devices and some straps. I'm about to start loading logs. Any tips for securing two straps to one rachet?

Having done a lot of hand winching, I would recommend using a hatchet to peel bark from the foot and the first 10 feet of the tree trunk during the summertime ( it helps drain the sugars out of the tree ). Then come back in the winter ( around December ) and fell the trees. Not only does this make the logs considerably lighter and much easier to move, it also means that you will get fewer cracks in the drying process. Another advantage with this method is that it makes the timber yielded from the logs much more long lasting ( if you are in the scenario were you might be building a log cabin ).

Would be nice to know the manufacturer's name of the Hand Winch and its load capacity?

It's a Tirfor (Griphoist if you're an American) or a clone of their products. The winches come in 800, 1600 and 3200kg capacities.

@@TC-th1ey Thank you and I'm a BRIT living in Bulgaria so I can't win, import taxes from either the UK or the States are a killer since BREXIT.
