Nice sound from the class 310. Certainly nicer than those annoying flying saucer Desiros. And nice to hear a proper local voice on the tannoy at Newport.
310s were very distinctive. The PSSS-HEHHH of the brake release, the click-clack of the tapchanger and the tuneful motors. When well-maintained they were smooth riders. I commuted on 310s for ten years.
I drove their cousins the 312's for a while on the Great Eastern. Similar trains but top speed of 90mph rather than 75mph (312's had disc brakes rather than drum brakes on the axle) fun to drive, with two types of brakes available unlike the more modern stock that was Westcode only.
I remember the 310s cascading down to the London tilbury and Southend line in the late 1980s to replace our oldest 302s and 305s Brilliant trains with powerful sounding motors and interesting tap changer noises. Early 90s saw some 312s cascade to us so by mid 90s we had 310 and 312s until the 310s were withdrawn in 2001 and 312s in 2003/ 4 being completely replaced with the plastic 357s I don’t like the modern trains, their traction motors sound like high pitched mosquitos plus the other annoying noises associated with the electronics.
Sadly they broke too easily when yobs threw rocks, bricks ect at the trains. The flat ones at least protected the driver, and as an ex driver i'd rather have that than looking pretty...........
They're not all gone yet! I used to take great delight in leaving Euston on one an a Holyhead working and changing at say Crewe and get another down to Carlisle and perhaps yet another all the way to Glasgow. Diesel hauled all the way from Euston to Glasgow, 20+ years after the wires went up!!!
The HST after passing......drivers opening the taps even more.....lovely sound.
Excellent once again Soi, the railway was a better place back then.
And this was a Sunday but there was a nice bit of action around.
excellent video great to see the class 37's shame to see the inter city no longer in use 👍
Yes, the HST's and 86's all long gone from this route.
Daring bit of reversing down the very steep approach road there at 4:30!
Well spotted, i never noticed that before!
Like Frank Drebin he was returning to the office😃

Yes, there is too much loud noise these days, must of it stating the bl**ding obvious or nonsense announcements.

I will get round to uploading some more LTS vids including 310' & 312s plus a few 317s that worked over there for a while.
310s looked much better with the wrap round windows.

Did any of the services being hauled by the class 37’s originate from London?
No, the one seen on here was a Sunday only Cardiff to LIverpool Lime St via Shrewsbury & return.
3:52 R.I.P
