JVC are my favourite radio cassettes to work on. Very well built. Some of the earlier stuff can be awkward to work on, but the 80's kit is much more modular. Fit and finish is excellent.
It definitely a possibility. The mounting method was never great on these either, so the weakened plastic can easily pull away - especially with a stiff aerial.

The antenna in this model and M70 usually breaks like this. I think it is the grease that is eating the plastic .
