Nice sifu..
I could be mistaken, but that JVC 828 looks to be from around 1978/79 era. If that's the case, then there is a lot that can be said about most '70s products; they were engineered using better quality parts and designed to be repaired if anything went wrong.
Just came across your channel really enjoying it mate 😊
Thanks for watching - much appreciated 👍
This looks awesome. This is so retro and rugged and full of features. This would go near the top of my list if I had the need and space for one for sure.
It sure is a beauty! One of my absolute favourites.
Did you manage to fix it?
i know it's considered a classic.. and well loved.. just not into the look.. i'm more into the look of the GE Blockbuster or Sanyo M9990.. but one of my favorites is the Fisher PH-492.. thats one sexy beast! awesome vid as usual!
Thanks for watching. The M9990 is a lovely solid unit. I have one on the shelf to do next year - needs a fair bit of work, but definitely worth it!
@retro_restos got one too.. needs love also.. got it cheap on eBay.. it's rough.. planning doing a video on it once I finish my Sharp GF-8585.. still looking forward when you get on fixin the Sharp VZ-2000..
That's a really good clear explanation of how the power supply works. Thanks Dylan, much appreciated. Have a great Christmas 😊👍
Thank you. I know there are better explanations out there, but I thought it might be nice to see what it means in a real life failure situation. I have a Sanyo twin deck with the same issue - people often sell them as a 'blown fuse,' but never assume anything! Thanks again and have a great Christmas 😀👍
Do you have a recommendation of a good sounding sanyo model thats easy to change the belts with no soldering required?
Does this model just have one belt? If ao this model would he perfect for me because i want a model sounda goid and is reliable thats easy to replace the belts on
Yes - these are very nice machines. Simple, reliable, sound great for the money and are easy to service. Also the MGR59 is the same but with a built-in radio.
@retro_restos thank you. Also just discovered your channel and your videos are very entertaining
A family favourite as a kid. The box art had Alex Higgins on it. Fun times. Thanks for the upload
Thanks for watching. I loved this one so much that I found a boxed one so that I had the original packaging. Amazing what fun you can have with a few LEDs 😀
I had cueball as a kid, a family favourite. Enjoy
Nice restoration, enjoyed the video.
Thanks very much for stopping by. Please do check out more of my videos if you can - lots of videos in the library! Thanks again 👍
@retro_restos I have finished watching your videos on your ebay bundle and I have subscribed. Now watching your video on the Sony TPS L2 Walkman.
This video just popped up into my feed, now I have to watch your repair videos on these electronic games.
How much did you pay for it? How much did you pay for it?
Great video as always! I’ve got two of these to repair that are coming up next in the queue after doing the finishing touches to my Sharp GF-9090. So I’ll be keeping one TRK8050, and selling the other one once they’re both done.
Glad you managed to sort it in the end! This model often has a problem on tape where only one channel works. Someone repaired one for me a few years back, and it turned out to be a funny filter coil/inductor on the Dolby circuit. He couldn’t figure out what value to replace it with, as there were no markings on it and nothing to indicate in the service manual, so he just removed both inductors from the Dolby circuit, and all was well.
I would love you to deep clean my PS4 😊 very good at what you do , subscribed ❤
Thanks for watching! 👍
Has that joystick got teeth marks in it???
I think so. Who knew that even dogs loved playing this game? 😁
This is my one! I actually bought this off you after you serviced it, very 80s and cool machine still going strong ❤️
That's great to hear. It is a lovely little machine. I wish I could keep them all! Thanks for saying hi 👍
L-ai reparat?
Good video as always. I know you sell the Astro Wars repair kits but I only need the S06 diodes. Can you advise where I can get them, or suitable replacements? Many thanks.
Hi - what did you end up cleaning it with - I have the same machine- dirty and has paint specks! Not sure what to use . Any tips would be appreciated 🙏🏼
Thanks - I was looking for info on which power supply to use, so this was super helpful!
I have just repaired one of these! The battery terminals were spotless, almost like new. Everything is good and it was the typical perished belt that had given up the ghost :)
The sanding and polishing job you did absolutely blew me away. Amazing work!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment 😊👍
If it was a standard cassette deck mechanism, you would have some luck fixing that, but 8-track players are more complex in design and can be difficult/uneconomical to repair (8-track was never a popular tape format outside USA). It's in pretty rough shape and might end up being a parts unit you can use for worthwhile repair projects later on. 😎
Is there a fix for the clock? What spray do you use for pots and switches?
SHARP GF 575 powar ic LA 7246 . parts you have da srilnka marketing
10:47 I seem to be in an identical position to the one you were in here with the seized stepper mechanism, but I can’t get mine un-stuck. I haven’t found a spot to apply “a little pressure” to get it moving. You skipped over showing exactly what you did or how thorough you were with “a clean & lube”, and then you said “in reality, a tiny drop of contact cleaner and a bit of lube down on that screw would’ve fixed the issue,” but I can’t tell which screw you were talking about. edit: I figured it out. The “screw” wasn’t a screw at all. It was the post with the C-clip on top. That’s what the entire tape head assembly slides up and down on, and that’s where the mechanism can freeze. The post penetrates through the assembly in two spots, and I just had to apply WD-40 to those spots, and gently work it around to get it free.
I would've given this a miss. Too much wrong with it.
Me too I think.
I was racking my brain trying to think of the other brand that was as bad as Alba, and eventually remembered Murphy, along with Tandy's, 'own brand', called Realistic, were pretty bad, as well.
I have an M9922K that is pretty much the same except for a different front design. Mine was discarded also because it was silent due to a dirty switch. Now works perfectly.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Dear , Thank you so much for sharing this information with me. It's a real relief to see that I'm not the only one who sometimes feels frustrated when putting a radio back together. But, as you mentioned, once the project is completed, the satisfaction is even greater. Best regards
Thanks for watching. Yes - it's funny how sometimes it's the easy ones that catch you out! But as you say, the rewards are well worth it. 😊📻
Nice job on this one. I think these units were more popular in Europe because in the late 70's it was JVC that ruled the US with their boombox radios which were the standard.
I love the late 70's JVC units - some of my all time favourites.
I have the black version of this that takes metal tape. I did own the original Walkman in 1979 my dad owned a wholesale electronics company so I got one of the first ones ever. Hope you get it working.
I borrowed one of these back in 1980 and did some test measurements on it. Frequency response was diabolical compared to even a mediocre hi-fi deck of the day, and wow & flutter was fairly bad too. I think what made it a winner was the lack of serious competition, plus it was solidly built so could take a knock or two. Definitely worth having and taking care of though as it's undeniably a classic piece of portable audio history.
Awesome! I collect minidisc players, but really admire the cassette walkmans. It looks like you've got a real jewel there. I bet you'll get it working. It would be great fun to listen to The Guardians Of The Galaxy mixes on that. Or even Static Age & The Filthy Fifteen, if ya wanna get all rad & gnarly. Thanks for sharing the arrival. I was fired up watching this! Great video!
Thanks very much for watching! I'm excited for this one - hopefully I'll be onto it soon, and get some cool old tunes on there! 👍
This is a nice piece of history. Not sure I would want one myself, I would prefer a later, smaller model. That reminds me did you ever get around to doing anything with the thing I sent you?
Yeah - these are more of a collector's item than anything else. Beautifully made - but not high in features, being that they simply didn't know if the Walkman would even take off when they invented it! I did take a look at the one you sent, but it really was a horror story inside. Just about everything was inoperative inside, so I've reassembled it for another day 😊
I bought the same model just recently. I'll be waiting for your detailed repair video and I hope it will be soon. Love your work, keep it up!
Thanks for watching. I have Sanyo's product from a similar time - I'd like to make a comparison video once they're done. Stay tuned! Thanks again 👍
I have the Sanyo M4333 and a bunch of TPS-L2 "clones" as well. I do hope they all have mechanism that are similar to TPS-L2 so that when I do get to try to repair them it would not be so laborious.
Brilliant video. I am just about to buy one of these for about 40 euro so I am happy that I will be able to do the belt job myself. Thanks very much.
I had worked on Panasonic model like
Mine isn’t receiving any power once the batteries are in. Was working just fine a few months ago. Any idea?
There is some corrosion in the battery holder, how would one go about cleaning that out
Fantastic. I love that one
It's a great unit. Quite simple, but robust. This should provide good service for years to come 👍
Another great video!! Another great resto👍
Thanks as always for watching 😊👍
Wonderful video. Marvelous device. Great job. Thanks!
Thanks very much for watching and taking the time to comment😊👍
Great restoration. Bringing it back to life.
Thanks for watching 👍
it looks a lot like Hitachi my dad had in the past 😍
Yes,there was a period in the late 70s/early 80s where the graphite colour and general layout were very similar - and I love that iconic look 😀👍
What's the belt's size?
This is interesting. I have the same job to do on mine and on finding your video I thought yes, this will give me the confidence to tackle it. However, on following you step by step I find there are several pointers you fail to give that would make the job much more simple, I shan't go into detail as words would not explain them very well, it needs pictures but the one thing I will say is you're making a meal of getting at the three belts underneath, you're trying to tilt the thing the wrong way and straining all the wires! Mine just pivoted up on the side nearest the camera and stood vertically as sweet as you like. I didn't have to cut any cable ties at all during the whole process. What you also fail to mention is which belts go on which spindles, it takes a bit of detective work carefully rescuing the broken bits and reassembling the old belts to know which one goes where. However, when it comes to putting the two belts on the spindle side I only had one left in my kit! Plus my wheels that take the belt(s) are different to yours, so frustrating!
Yep - having done around a dozen 8190s now, I can confirm that there are several different mechs, so vary a bit with regard to cable layouts, idlers and number of belts required. There are a few ways to tackle it, depending on what you are trying to achieve - including going from the back, under the board. Also, the mech doesn't always need to come out - it depends if the belts have 'melted' etc. Also, keep an eye on any cable straining and remove wires as required - I usually unscrew the 3 leaf switches from the mech.
