Toshiba Radio Cassette RT70S Boombox Repair. Cassette Belt, Door Fix & Service
Hi Folks,
Here's a look at a filthy, neglected Radio Cassette Recorder from Toshiba. I open up and tear down the unit in this video, along with cleaning up the casing. The cassette mechanism gets a service, a new belt and I repair the cassette door. Will it rise to play again?
This was originally destined to be a quick 'unboxng' video, but I felt compelled to get to the bottom of it straight away - so do the repairs too!

    Had one of these Toshiba in red back in 1986. Superb machine, solid cassette mechanism and sensitive tuner. It went with us everywhere! Had to be careful not to let it fall over onto its front with its fragile selector switches.

      Yeah, they're quite light and portable aren't they? And I imagine the battery life isn't too bad because the mech isn't too heavy. I hadn't really thought about them falling forward - you see a lot of these types with broken selector switches, and I assumed it was heavy- handedness. Maybe just accidents! Thanks for watching 👍

    i had a few of those over the years, all various models Rts80, 100, 120, and i had a rare one with Soft touch deck. we used to have an RT S70 in school in the 80s, it was in Pottery classroom, my Music Teacher had a Sharp GF555, and when i used to go to the Youth Club in around 83/84 they had a GF575 that they bought brand new. As for the Tosh, the Nicest model is the S90, i have one, really nice but they are super problematic and complicated to repair, it's hard to get a good one in working order these days. i have a video of my S90 Playing on my channel.

      That's great - funny how we remember the details of all the cool stuff from when we were kids! To be fair, it's nice that you could have kit like that at school and Youth Club without it getting ruined. I've not had any of the aft touch Toshibas. Your S90 is a lovely beast - I like the VU meters front and centre. But as you say, all those Logic buttons can be a bit tricky over time. As for Sharp, I have a mint GF-555 and 575. Lovely twin decks. Never did get a 777, but there's still time 😁 Thanks for taking the time to share your memories - I'll check out you channel 👍

    That RT-70S looks very similar to the RT-6015 I repaired a few months ago. Toshiba kind of dropped the ball when they made the RT-6016 in my opinion, because they left out the soft eject damping gear for the cassette door and no variable balance control.

    Looks very similar to the one a friend at school owned, this was probably around 1984-85. That was the first time I'd come across the ST-WIDE (Stereo Wide) function. At the time I think I had a mono Sharp GF-1740, and an older Grundig C480 which could make stereo recordings from the DIN socket but it only had a mono speaker.

I have the exact blue version of the mgp11 that looks so similar to this one, the actual mechanism looks almost exactly the same. I changed the second belt on it the other day which was a nightmare, had to take the whole mechanism apart and almost couldn't get it back together again, god knows how I did it. also didn't know how to put a spring back that was placed by the reverse spindle either but that's a job for another day. wondering if you have any go to products for polishing these old cassette players and getting rid of little scratches?

    When I do tape speed adjustment (after replacing belts and the routine mechanical lubrication) if the unit has LINE IN/AUX (and is one of mine), I hook a PC to it with a 1kHz tone (e.g. 45 minute) and use a professional tape (similar length) with the same tone on it (not a home-recorded copy) - then make the adjustment(s) until the tone pitch of both the tape and PC is an approximate match (I would use the proper equipment for expensive high end models that I don't own). With double cassette models some service manuals state the high speed should be aligned first as it takes priority. In the case of the JVC, being a mono single deck, it's a lot simpler to repair and "near enough is good enough" with tape speed and so on. 😎👍

    • @retro_restos

      Totally agree. I sometimes use a tone generator or reference tape, and counter or o'scope depending on model. But sometimes, doing it by ear is plenty quick and easy - and accurate enough for a casual listener. Using the aux in is a good idea, as you can switch immediately back and forth while tweaking the tape speed.

      There's only one internal transformer screw on this model. The other hole is for the bottom left rear casing screw. Quite unusual.

    i was given a Sharp GF9090 just like that, all the bits were all thrown in to a plastic storage box, a friend stripped it to re belt it but just got bored and gave it me, i rebuilt it, it looks in lovely condition now and it's from 1979, they're a great solid little radio

    Typical sharp Deck. when the cassette buttons stop responding, its usually down to a worn belt, it's probably been stored away for years, someone's dug it out and pressed play, it's tried to engage but the heads has stuck half loaded, when you get it open just spin the capstan to reset the deck back in to stop mode

      Thanks for the advice. I've had a few soft-touch/logic controlled JVC units that have been stuck, but not a Sharp. Reassuring to know, as the doors almost invariably need to be open to remove the mech (as I'm sure you know). Hoping to work on this one soon. Thanks again 👍

      @@retro_restos i think i have about 30-40 boomboxes, and out of all of them, my sharp radios, and my panasonic ones, You can leave them unused for months and when i go back to them they just work straight off the switch, where as some other seem do develop problems from lack of use. i have videos of all my radios on my channel, but since doing the videos, some have gone, some got scrapped and a couple got sold. i want to stop buying but i can't because radios are all i know.. i'm older now and i've been collecting since the late 80s. so i need to stop.

    Audio Sonic was a popular cheap brand in the Netherlands. Selling all kind of electronic, like game consoles.

    • @retro_restos
      @retro_restos 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, I think it was an 'own brand' kind of thing. I've subsequently seen several units which are the same, except for colours and brand name. Not actually too bad a unit to be fair - especially for a budget unit. Thanks for watching 👍

    I noticed the DC drive motor doesn't have a hole to insert a screw driver to adjust the speed calibration. I guess any speed adjustment on this model would be hiding somewhere on the PCB. That would drive me on the edge!

    • @retro_restos
      @retro_restos 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the regulation circuit is mounted inside the motor housing on this one. I think I would have mounted a buck converter with a variable DC out to facilitate adjustment if this had been running 'off' speed wise. So much easier with the motor built in trim pots! Thanks for watching 👍

    This is a fantastic cassetteplayer. It can variate the speed of the tape, lower or faster as you require. I got this same one and it's still working after 40 years. Wich do you preferr on portable cassette player, SANYO or SONY? Greetings from CHILE 🍷🍷🍷🍷

      Thanks for watching 👍 These are great machines - I service quite a lot. I've probably serviced 30 of these M series over the last year or so, and every single one needed at least new belts, purely down to age and performance. But that's only to be expected with age. I prefer Sanyos as they're more user friendly. Sonys sound great but generally are just more awkward to work on. Thanks again! 😃

      @@retro_restosso all my respect. Certainly belt system is a weakness for 8 tracks players, turntables, cd/dvd trays and cassette, DAT and dcc players. SONY is the brand I like most, but SANYO is better components and response I guess. I'd put it one level higher than SONY. Have a very good week and I'll be watching your videos 🍷🍷🍷🍷

    Hi, Thanks for this. I'm trying to help a friend put one of these back together. She has a broken leaf switch on the mech. I don't suppose you know if a replacement can be sourced ?

    • @retro_restos
      @retro_restos 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, thanks for watching. I fear the only replacement you'll find is from a donor machine. I've yet to see one being broken, but you might get lucky on a specific search - perhaps on forums? You may find a switch from something else and modify the mounting etc perhaps? It may be tricky to get the switch timing correct and reliable this way though. Unusual for these to break, so it's an unlucky case.

    I've repaired many radio-cassette boomboxes over the years, and never once needed to strip them down completely to fix electronic or mechanical issues. There is nothing more infuriating than having to fix someone else's mistakes plus the original faults; I really avoid the "jigsaw puzzle" repairs as there may be a chance of some parts being incorrect or missing. Persistence, patience, perseverance and perspiration paid off for you in the end with that Hitachi. 😇👍

    • @retro_restos
      @retro_restos 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely. I do sometimes strip down units; but mostly due to multiple faults, severe filth, or if I'm building one from several units. Otherwise 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' I'm pretty familiar with TRKs, and knew I could always use this for spares, but yeah - it's not usually a good idea to buy a box of bits with the sole intention of having a complete, working unit at the end. I got lucky here - which was a bonus!
