- On 13 January 2012, the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia struck an underwater rock, capsized after it struck rocks off the coast of Giglio Island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, and sank in shallow waters off Tuscany, resulting in 32 deaths. It is the worst cruise disaster the Titanic. More than 4,200 people were rescued, though 32 people died. Several of the ship’s crew, notably Capt. Francesco Schettino, were charged with various crimes.

It’s always so sad when they introduce someone who was on the ship/plane/whatever in a documentary and then their family is interviewed because you know that they were one of the people killed. That always gets to me.
IKR?! It was heartbreaking to listen to the mother, brother & friends talk about the violinist who lost his life. His brother said he applied for work on land in an orchestra because I guess the novelty of working on a cruise ship had run its course. He seemed like such a humble, sweet man. No one should have died in this. He was all alone.🌹❤
The translated radio conversation between the Italian Coast Guard and the "captain" was epic. I remember listening to it the moment it was released to the public. Captain claimed to slip and fall into a life boat and the CG ridiculed him for wanting to go home to have soup with mommy while his passengers and crew are dying.
My personal favourite was his warning to Schettino that he ‘might have saved [himself] from the sea’ but that he was ‘going to cause him a world of trouble’

He instantly became Italy's new idol.
The engineering that went into raising that ship was in itself a modern marvel.
Amazing how some humans who pick up the pieces after disaster strikes, can be so Intelligent, Yet the humans put in charge to keep disaster from happening can be so dumb.

This happened nearly 100 years after the Titanic disaster. Concordia - Jan 2012, Titanic - April 1912. If the Costa Concordia had sunk in deeper waters, it would have been the 21st-century version of the Titanic sinking.
I can just imagine what Costa Concordia's underwater shipwreck would have look like..
The death toll would have been closer to that of the Titanic, and it’s possible it could have been higher than that if that had been the case instead of what actually happened.
Also, in both cases, you had the stagnation of the order to evacuate the ship.

It’s terrible how easily this could have been prevented. So much pride in the captain in never admitting something was wrong and getting everyone to evacuate before it became too late.
However, it’s so cool to see how ready the people were to sacrifice their homes, towels, blankets, etc. Such amazing people!

I wonder if part of it was he didn't want to face the fact that the ship was sinking and he knew, that as cpt, he would be held responsible. He was in denial.
The island came through CLUTCH for these people. If I’d been on that ship, I’d make a point of coming back to thank them as profusely as I could.

In all the documentaries I've seen of this tragedy, this is the first time I'm hearing about the deputy mayor going onboard to try and help. Pellegrini risked his life to get people off that ship and he wasn't even a passenger or part of the crew. He's a hero in my book and I'm disappointed it's taken ten years for me to learn about him.

The Captain was a disgrace of a man. Reckless and a cowered. Didn't care about the people on board to help them. People died and he was one of the first people off. glad he served time behind bars. I hope this haunts him for a long time.
Agreed, the accident was bad enough, career ending for sure, but the response was more than criminal. Once he was told, engine room flooded, nothing working, we are drifting, which was what, 3-5 minutes after the hit, at that point, all that is left to do is abandon ship, everyone to lifeboats and get off. No one had to die, get injured, suffer mental trauma ect. it was all preventable, they had plenty of time, like an hour I believe before the ship rolled to get everyone off. That is what makes this incident so bad.

@@brimis5349 absolutely. Plus it was in shallow water and right next to land. If the abandon ship order was given as soon as the problem was first noticed then nobody would have died. Apart from making me feel very sad, it makes me feel very angry and that’s one of the main reasons why.

Schettino did serve as a ferry captain with Tirrenia before he became head of security under Costa Cruises. Which probably explains how he ended up as captain of Costa Concordia this quickly. Otherwise it's illegal to promote someone who has no prior experience to captain straight away.

I got into disaster documentaries after watching Internet Historian's video on the Costa Concordia. That lead me to this channel, it's all coming full circle.

You know your ship’s captain is a piece of 💩 when the mayor of the local town gets onboard and does more to save lives on the ship than the captain. All while the captain is scurrying away. Definitely in the running for worst captain of all time.
I think the title for worst captain still goes to that guy who abandoned ship without ever telling his passengers, mostly children, to abandon ship. It was that Korean ferry.

@@amberjones9520 sorry for the late reply! Yes that Sewol ferry incident, there isn't a lot yet, but there are some things on it. Honestly, it will go down in history, and the only reason it hasn't been made into more documentaries is because it's fairly recent. So, there are sensitivities, politically...but still. Such a horrific and avoidable tragedy.

I remember I was in secondary school when this happened and a classmate of mine had showed us a picture of him with the captain on the Costa Concordia a few weeks before this tragedy. When we heard it on the news we were all in shock, especially him... RIP to everyone who lost their lives :(

I cruise with my husband who is wheelchair bound - how he would ever have got off a ship in these circumstances I do not know. We did a cruise in 2017 with another cruise line that took an almost identical route.

The thing that angers me the most is the bridge not giving the abandon ship order as soon as they knew that the situation was serious and that the buoyancy of the Concordia was compromised. If that was carried out then I’m pretty certain that nobody would have died. The captain and the senior crew members who should have given that order were more concerned with saving their own lives, jobs and reputations than the people who’s lives were in their hands. So avoidable and unnecessary.
I hope the captain has seen the footage of the family w/the two terrified little girls who had to have thought they were going to die. I'm glad their father did everything to calm their fears despite he could recognize the dire events unfolding all around them. And that captain had his own wife and daughter at home while he's sneaking mistresses on his ships and apparently likes cocaine...great dad as a role model!

Anyone realize that this happened on Friday the 13th, in the deadliest month of the year "January", 100 years after the Titanic disaster, and the same year that many thought was Earth's end? Edit: I also realized that this has been posted on the 10 year anniversary of the ship's disaster.

I totally forgot about this, 4 days late. It has really been 10 years and I was 9 at the time... in 2017, the year when scrapping of this ship was finished, on a Sunday we visited Trieste on a family trip with my sister and parents. As we arrived at the harbour, very surprisingly we came face to face with the docked Costa Mediterranea for the very first time and although they're not sister ships, Mediterranea reminded me of Concordia. Seeing a cruise ship was my lifelong dream, even if we weren't going on board which would've been absolute wonder inside my entire body. I also remember going with the family to a shop and while in there, we heard 3 loud, long blows of a horn. I immediately knew what it was and when we came back I was right: It was the cruise ship, signalling departure and we watched as she reversed and took a left turn out of the harbour. That day was the first time I've been in Italy and saw a cruise ship in person, and that being nothing but a surprise not just to me, but us the family. *Imagine, going to a country you've always wanted to visit, but getting a surprise there too.* For us, that surprise was at a port city near the border.
32 people died, grand and expensive ship had to be scrapped, add on cost of recovery operations, all because the married captain wanted to show off to his side booty.

Compared to the Greek ferry that sunk because the crew was watching a soccer match, where fewer passengers were on board but 80 died, and no organised effort other than what the islanders of some greek island (equally small) did to help with their own personal boats... this looks like a perfect rescue. Perhaps the Italian CG should've come to help them. the GCG didn't.
Looks like it was dramatically clearer conditions and water as well as much closer to land. That being said, I've never understood how so many people died in the Greek ferry accident when they were still not TERRIBLY far from land.

It’s known that she unfortunately fell into a flooded area of the ship, but I’ve also seen reports of the baby and her father being turned away from a life boat. Apparently her dad also made a great mistake by going back to his cabin to try to retrieve his medicine, people tried to tell him that they could get him more but I guess things just didn’t go as planned.

Isn’t the Captain supposed to go down with the ship? Since Schettino didn’t, what does that make him? I have one c-word that describes him…COWARD.
They’re not required to stay on the ship past the point of safety. But part of their job is to assure the safety of everyone on board and coordinate with rescuers for as long as possible, at which Schettino obviously failed.
i suppose if i was on a ship wreck and then had to get on another ship to go home i would be like "guess i live on this island now, not going back on the water"

After listening to the back and forth between De Falco The captain, dude was and is an absolute tool.
I was on vacation in Malta in November 2011 and HMS Ilustrious made a courtesy call flying the flag for the Royal Navy in Valletta`s grand habour, they had an open day when people could tour the aircraft carrier which my wife and I did it was a huge ship. When we left the Costa Condordia was berthed just along the docks and it was four times larger than the "Lusty" it was absolutely massive.
Two months later it was sunk by an idiot of a Captain and a 100% coward to boot, he should have swung from the highest yard arm in the Italian Navy for deriliction of duty.

This accident shows the outcome of a poor safety culture at Carnival Corp. Just this week the problems continue with Princess getting environmental fines. With covid driving experience out of the industry, I am afraid incidents like this one could become more common. Very sad!

You won’t probably believe this but my peer counseling graduation day was Friday January 13th ,2012. I remember when the peer counseling instructor announced that our graduation day was Friday January 13th,2012 I thought to myself that something is going to go wrong at our graduation because I’m very superstitious. The day came and went with nothing bad happening so I just went on with my life. About 2-years later I was watching a special on this disaster when they said that it happened January 13th,2012. I couldn’t believe it. I’m thinking you’ve gotta be kidding me when I was at my graduation party the ship went aground and 14 innocent people lost there life. Even more than before I’m very careful what I do on Friday the 13th.

RIP to all. Like an aircraft, the marine environment is mission critical and usually has a razor thin tolerance of failure. The state's role in oversight and safety enforcement in a commercial environment is where the failure point occurred.

Entirely preventable, like so many maritime disasters. I think these people lose respect for the dangers of operating a vessel in open ocean.
Every time I watch these videos about emergencies on cruise ships and airplanes, I always think about how my mother is a brain damaged triplegic. She only has use of her left arm and speaks like a baby (she had 3 back to back strokes). Not that I even want to fly or go on a ship of any kind even by myself, but just to think about what the F I would do in such an emergency. I would never leave my mother so I know I would die with her unless people came together to help us. To hear the head of police (can’t remember his name/title) talk about how all chivalry was gone and it was essentially every man for himself at that point, I just know my mother and I would surely die. I wake up in a panic several times a month thinking there’s a fire or a flood happening in our home and I alone have to get her and my 5 animals out before we all perish. These thoughts have kept me at home since my mom became this way. I’m young and should be enjoying life but I’m just too scared and can’t leave my mom alone anyway since I have no one to help us. But I know if we were ever in that situation, I’d be praying for these mediocre days and nights at home instead. This is horrifying.
You and your mom are under protection of the angels, enjoy life and don't fear. When you feel afraid, just think of your guardian Angels. May I ask what happened to you mom? Love and prayers ❤
