The Last Classic Porsche - The 987 Cayman S Was The Last Great Analog Sports Car From Porsche

  • Mid engined, flat six, manual gearbox, and minimal driver aids - I believe this to be the last great "analog" sports car from Porsche, and a masterpiece of simplicity and design. I'm not arguing that Porsches that came later aren't in many ways better, but none of them have the look and feel of a classic air-cooled model, as this 2007 Cayman S does. If you were able to bring Ferdinand Porsche back from the dead, and show him the line of cars that came after he died, this Cayman is the last one that would be recognizable to him as a product descended from his original designs. He would probably be a bit troubled by the coolant hoses, of course.
The Cayman was marketed between the Boxster and Carrera in the Porsche lineup, in terms of price and performance - many suspected the Cayman was being sold short on horsepower so as to keep it slower than its big brother, a problem that probably no longer applies with horsepower ratings going through the stratosphere. But for pure driving enjoyment, there is little that tops spinning a first generation Cayman S around.
Full review and test drive by Bill of Curious Cars. This 18K mile 2007 Cayman S is for sale at Autohaus of Naples, on the web at www.AutohausNaples.com, or by phone at (239) 263-8500.

As an owner of a 987.1 S, your review makes me smile. :) Thanks for taking the time to post this. TBH I purchased one for the simple reason that I can't afford a classic Ferrari (Which I've spent a life time chasing). Now that I own the Cayman S, I honestly dont check the price of Ferrari's anymore. I dont need to.

Buying a Ferrari is only part of the cost of ownership. I followed a F430 owner for 2 years and he was spent $14k the first year and $10k the second year, let alone the headache and loss of use. I have a 987.2 Boxster S, it’s a nicer convertible than a 911. I like the look of the Cayman as well, love the hatch back design.

987 is still my favorite Cayman. The size, the look and the analog feel is one of the most enjoyable driving modern cars at any price point. I enjoy mine as much, maybe more than my R8. There is something about it that feels almost vintage modern. Sure the newer ones are bigger and quicker, and drive amazing, but the Classic look and smaller size of the 987 really take the cake and being a smaller car, it feels even more connected to the road and track. Prices on these are finally starting to creep up, thanks to the greatly over inflated and silly price increase in the 911 market (996 and 997 especially) Grab one now, as with all Porsches, they go up eventually.

Bought a 987.1 Base Cayman for $12,900 from European Collectibles in Costa Mesa right when Covid hit. Yes, the car had 124k miles but it came from the original owner with all the service records. Three years later I still have the car and it has 143k miles on the clock now… zero issues. I did replace the starter due to slow cranking-simple DIY. Midnight blue with tan interior…. Great car and you don’t see too many of them around! 2007 Audi A4 Quattro is my daily… fun car too!

Nice review Bill. In September 2006, I ordered one of the first base Cayman in Vancouver, Canada in "Guards Red", (apparently the colour was named after the Beefeater English Guards hat) as shown, accept the option to buy the 911 Turbo mags was not available and the dealership had to ask the factory if we could and they said yes, a $5,000 option. Car shown has the "Lobster Claw", mags. My car arrived in February 2007 and it was stunning to look at then and and still is to this day. It is so well balanced and has Ferrari Dino styling ques. The PASM option on this car which stiffens up the suspension, was a great investment and makes a very noticeable difference driving on the highway over 65 MPH /100 KMH, in terms of tightening up the car. Cayman's and PORSCHE's in general, just purr between 3,500 to 6,000 R.P.M. This is a lovely example and I hope some lucky Canadian buys it in Florida. Lol.

I must say, my 987.2 Boxster S is my favorite car ever, even supplanting my E46 M3. I was looking for a Cayman or Boxster, but the drop-top is a better value for those of us trying to save some green. You are so right about the 'Miata on steroids." I've had two Miatas and would gladly have another if I had the garage space but it's just that the Cayman/Boxster option gives you so much... MORE! I also share your taste in Benz classics as another all-time fave of mine was the W124 E320 I should never have sold. Finally, good to see a 2-wheeled German ride ("Beemer," not "Bimmer") in your garage as well. Please keep doing what you do!

"Safety switch on the clutch". Surprisingly, not on my 2005 Lotus Elise. Dunno how they sold them this way in the USA. Makes it simple to open the door, sit on the sill, rattle the shifter, stick in the key the column-mounted lock, push the button on the Cobra fob and press the start button. Saves a lot of work actually getting into the driver seat. Still, looking forward to driving my Cayman which does not require gymnastics to actually get into the driver seat.

Great breakdown having owned a few. I might add that the 914 which was a Porsche/Volkswagan collaboration and a true mid-engine (I have a 1975). One of the Porsche's that saved their financial bacon like the Boxster/Macan. I must admit the new 718S while it does come with all the electronic baubles has a turbo/4 with amazing torque comparatively speaking. Obviously a real passionate car guy, excited to subscribe.

I deadset reckon that "Autohaus of Naples" could be turned into reality tv show sitcom, with Peter & all his dramas with different car video girls & animals roaming around & Bob's cynical take on the whole thing ....there's plenty of funny material to work with 😂

Thanks for the review and history lesson. Agree that the gen 1 Cayman/Boxster are great analog cars. I have owned a Boxster RS60 Spyder for 9 years and despite more recently also owning a Gt3 and 981 Spyder I just can’t bring myself to sell the RS60. This gen is just a fabulous and relatively simple sports car that is always an absolute joy to drive. And with about 300bhp pretty nippy too.

Generic, maybe, but THIS is on my list. I missed the boat on depreciation (I swear these things were in the mid 20's a couple of years ago), but I am still in love with them, and someday in the next year or two I'm going to trade my much loved spare 'fun' car, plus 20k, and get this completely impractical rolling piece of sculpture with more performance that I can legitimately use in an inner suburb - with visions of two lane country roads that thankfully do still beckon - if you time your drive right so there's a good shot at getting them to yourself. That, and the parking garage appreciation.

Nice video Bill. I'm a Porsche guy myself, (one of my favorite brands of all time) and work on German brands for a living. To me the last great analog Porsche is also what I consider to be the greatest Porsche generation of all time the 964 chassis.
Still air cooled, still very mechanical and driver oriented, timeless design, and gobs of power. In fact, in the early 90's would become the fastest production vehicle in the world for a couple of years there.
The Caymen is cool, imo what the original Boxster should have been.

Bill, I too live in Naples and fully appreciate the “jerk merge”. The snow birds allow enough space between cars for two fully loaded semis to merge in. Try going north on Livingston and making a right on Vanderbilt a 5PM!

Bill, I love your "real" reviews! Your vehicle history is great, your reviews are detailed but not snooze-worthy. Left FL for NC 4 years ago. I was MISERABLE during the 9 months of FL summer there! Someday, I'd love to take you out for a beer or preferably a Bourbon!

Just bought one with an aftermarket exhaust that makes the engine you wear like a backpack even more grumbly, especially from 2,000 - 2,300 rpm. Still hear the gear box clicking and whurring. Balance, suspension, and tires grip a country mountain road like a frightened cat. Hard to believe at 295 hp, but I can't get close to the limits of this car. You'd have to get on a track to hit the top end.

I really thought this was going to be my next car this time around but had to pass it up for something more practical and cost less to maintain.
In my research to learn this Porsche, I was really impressed it evolution to this iteration of the 987. The last of the analog Porsche.
This red 987S is in pristine condition is so sexy looking. A real head turner in that red. Love your gun comments. 😆 the gun free spirit of FL shines thru. 👍
