Hey Chris, not sure if you’re American or not but this might be interesting either way for you. Some cities like the smaller ones outside and around Miami still use the grid system, but they are set up different. The grids cover miles of road, making square-mile squares between the intersections. In these squares, there are small communities that can be accessed from several locations to these grid roads. Each community is different and holds a certain character while still allowing for fast travel outside. Public transport like busses will drop people in front of the entrances but not inside, letting foot traffic and local drivers have the only reason to travel there. Most of the exits/entrances will have stop signs, exit lanes, and median breaks like most highways. The communities themselves are slower traffic, windy roads with a few cul de sacs and roundabouts. Efficiency never seems the main goal, but some type of natural and organic property setting in the space that is so rigidly set aside for living. It’s actually a decent contrast, for someone who lives in such a location.
Walking paths connecting the islands vertically, the roads already connect them horizontally, I believe those would help the citizens living on the inner islands, to more easily get around on foot and via tram.

Two ideas I have are connecting the tram line to the monorail and having a tram line going the other direction since it's looping in only one direction at the moment.
You can have ferries to connect to the ferry lines down the river as a way to not clog up metro or monorail. Just around the square closest to the river toward where you might have the Uni or something like that. You might want to have an industry area close by so there are jobs for the people who move in but don't have education yet. Love this city and the way you build it. A joy to watch! 9:54 "Every single little oblong square, whatever you wanna call them" As an Italian I found it such an odd thing to wonder about, as city blocks are literally named after islands, lol ("isola": island; "insula" (latin): old Roman high density residential blocks; "isolato": how we call American city blocks, less common for Italian cities)
This sort of reminds me of Star, Palm and Hibiscus Islands in Miami/Biscayne Bay Florida. Super exclusive residences there. Pretty much all A celebrities and C level executives live there.
Except less well done, not nearly as "natural" looking, and not designed for boat access on the canals. Also, can't we collectively admit the swamp draining and island creation plans were poorly thought out and not a great idea?
As a Dutch person, I really like this district. Perhaps getting bicycle paths tot connect the islands vertically (encourage biking) and perhaps extending the canals to the surrounding water on al sides. Perhaps building the university area in the same way (between the offices and the nearby monorail) and connecting it to the rest of the city via this district by ferry. Suggestion for a name: Theezakjeswaard (Theezakjes = Dutch for tea bags, because you drop those in the water. Waard = Dutch for flat landscape near a river ).
With all those channels, it is definitely Teanice. PS: I'd like to have a second Monorail stop at the top end of the area. There is one at the large crossing already.
This community is just steeping in success :D Add some more walking paths, and I'd like to see buses or something for the inner islands to help the citizens get around.
Due to their borders with the canals each of the rectangular parts of this new area of Teaville looks like a (tea) cup. And this, together with making almost all the buildings self sustaining makes this area an area of *Green Tea Cups.*
Some suggestions since you're looking for more ideas: 1) I think a zoo or nature preserve would fit really well between the canal zone, IT cluster/metro hub, and that coastal district. There's plenty of space for something big and open, and a huge metro hub nearby for visitors 2) The canals seem like a great place to use cable cars. They don't seem to get a lot of use, and this seems like a great area for something gimmicky. Barring that, river boats would also be fitting. Just a little something extra to move through the middle area while the tram covers the periphery. 3) Also want to second the idea of a park island in the center of the new district. Maybe combine two of the islands and delete a third to make room for some recreational docks.
Yeah I think some more organic-ness (eg connecting some together of the land masses or even extending the area with some curved canal sections) would be cool Also if boats were to travel in them that'd look really cool too (if not for transport, are boats able to fish in them?)
I love this new canals area. Instead of putting in a big parking area, you could put little parking strips along the sections that have nothing on them. The strips between the road and the canal. They have a similar parking set up along the canals in the Netherlands.
Hooray for #TeaVille! I'm still loving this series... but boy, when that last track starts in, I get the anxiety of knowing the episode's nearly over! :D Thanks again for your hard work, Sir Biffa!

Shaoshing-Found this Green Tea related canal name from a Chinese tea district in the 1870s ish. This is the text extract”The manafactured leaf is brought down from Teen Kai by rasts or very small boats. From Ken Whan, near Moyune, requires a land portage of 10 miles. Arrived at Sing-ling, the tea is carried by transport boats the rest of the way to Teen Kai; from Teen Kai to Yih Chia, near Hangchow, the journey is made without change of boat. At Yih Chia it is carried over to the Shaoshing Canal, and on this canal it is conveyed to the Taingo River, carried in wheelbarrows a short distance to a ferry boat, ferried over the river to the town of Pah Kwan, placed in boats in the canal, which convey it to the Yuyao branch of the l'ung River; thence to Ningpo it is conveyed in four boats, and subject to three short portages while en route to this port.”🤔🩺☕️
Randomly thought of a name for a district last night while playing my own city: Cuppateainamin Squares. Ironically it seems fitting, considering the content of the video.
you could call it "The Samovar". a samovar holds a bunch of water and keeps it hot and ready for making tea whenever. it would be especially fitting if you added one of the water tank buildings to the district, or a couple of water towers. I prefer kettles myself, but we've been using an electric samovar lately, because you can't use a cast iron kettle on a glass topped stove. :(
In Phoenix, we use a canal system for our water which is controlled by Salt River Project, and their is the Arizona Tea Company. Sice it's a self sufficent area, call it the Arizona Green Tea Project
That looks really cool. Maybe set a monorail station on the main road going nearby so they have a way to get downtown without driving? You could do a pretty footbridge over the canal to the station. Maybe use one that has the road built in? Love the design.
The roads connecting the islands to the outside world could also be a small four-lane road as going in those roads have two ways to go at the first intersection (and they'll likely be busy)
Hi Biffa. Good to see you giving credit to overs for ideas / inspiration. For me , i would add 1 x ferry stop next to the tram depot on the south end. Also up on the north end you have a monorail passing by, so why not add i station. This would give that new local district 2 additional options to connect to other neighborhoods Regards George
I did this earlier in the week without seeing any videos. I'm playing with no cheats,no mods, and a fulltime job, lol. I havent played it out long enough yet, i did no roads connecting them. So far its working. I was trying to solve the crazy traffic jams at my highway roundabouts before 50 000 people. Industry DLC killed it. Had a 170 000 city before DLC with 85% traffic without even trying. Game on PS4 needs alot of patches
you MUST put some tiny parks in. Remove one canal between a block and replace that with a park. Diagonal foot bridges across the chamomile canals to connect surrounding blocks to the park. More than one tiny park.
Canals look great, maybe need to add some footbridges to join some of the islands together, particularly the middle section - roads just go around the outside
What I would love to see is ferry stops in the canals that connect outside the district. I plan to do something like this some point and did a search for "low profile" ferry points.
I was skeptical of canals but i think you made it work, perhpas a some more organic shapes would have been nice. Can you showcase some of the supertall buildings from the workshop in your city? perhpas on the river bank between the city centre and the hamilton district to help knit the city together. love watching your city develop.
One thing to be aware, maybe you are, so just putting it out there: Reducing the number of vehicles on the line is not always the best idea as i have noticed in my own city. Let me explain. With certain mod (possibly advanced public transport whatever it is called) every public stop has a timer. Timer represents the time until people leave the stop if they don't have any vehicle come pick them up. If timer gets to 0, people start leaving the stop. So the reason you might not have anybody on the stop is that people waited too long for public transport and if it didn't arrive, they left. Then you might check your own line and see you have 0 passangers, so you will think: "Hey this line is not used enough, lets reduce number of vehicles". But it was the lack of vehicles that created the lack of passangers in the first place. What I have done was I went through stops individually and checked the timers and when people started leaving and adjusted the number of vehicles accordingly, so that the timer would never fall to 0 on any stop on the lines. Again, you might be aware of it already, so just putting it out there for other people too. :) Great city by the way
Watching your videos is like watching Art. Hard to make it by yourself, enjoying to see talented and passionate person making this... Appreciate a lot the "welcome back to the 2020 water watching championships" moment! The voice, the intonation... ;)
I love it! I'd only suggest some walking bridges on a few of the corners that don't have roads. Is it possible to put the waterside restaurant and boat rental stuff on the side of a canal? Might be cool to see people puttering around enjoying the water, even without larger ship traffic.
I love the idea of an island for parking! I was wondering why you didn't use the watchtowers instead of the fire station, it would save you some space and provide a very good coverage (especially with the fire plane station nearby). Maybe an express bus line from the canals to the IT center could be useful :).
Maybe an idea. In the middle, there are a couple "plots" that hasn't any transportation. Maybe an idea with a bus route to connect them to a couple tram stops? It's just a suggestion :)
You could (im not sure, but maybe) increase land value with long thin parks, that span the canals that have the two-squares of unzoned grass either side. If you also have walking paths between some of the blocks, you could make some money from them ^^ Such a cool area, I love the look of it !!
As a Dutch person I had a different picture in my mind when you mentioned 'canals'... but this is very nice. There should definitely be some boats on the water however.
I live in upstate NY near the Erie Canal. You know what the Erie Canal has to get over hills or changes in elevation that Cities: Skylines doesn't seem to have? Locks. For those who don't know what canal locks are, here's a Wiki about it: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lock_(water_navigation)

Biffa : "Pffff! What traffic is it?!"
Man a ferry running around the outside would look amazing! I also think you need fish markets and maybe fishing industry around the outsides
You should definitely add a monorail stop on the road that borders this lovely neighbourhood!
I love this aesthetic - definitely going to give it a shot!
I'm still wishing that one day there will be an expansion that includes canal locks.
In Phoenix, we use a canal system for our water which is controlled by Salt River Project, and their is the Arizona Tea Company. Sice it's a self sufficent area, call it the Arizona Green Tea Project
Name ideas: Venice Islands, Bergamot Bay, The Caffeine Canals, Lady Grey Lagoon
This would give that new local district 2 additional options to connect to other neighborhoods
Regards
George
I did this earlier in the week without seeing any videos. I'm playing with no cheats,no mods, and a fulltime job, lol. I havent played it out long enough yet, i did no roads connecting them. So far its working. I was trying to solve the crazy traffic jams at my highway roundabouts before 50 000 people. Industry DLC killed it. Had a 170 000 city before DLC with 85% traffic without even trying. Game on PS4 needs alot of patches
Tea Box Bay! The area looks like little tea boxes all lined up!
Scone District. Goes perfectly with all the tea.
If it was Italy you'd go with Cannoli Canals and call it a day.
you MUST put some tiny parks in.
I'd call it "New Boston". They might want to host a teaparty there
What I would love to see is ferry stops in the canals that connect outside the district.
You should add a CCW version of the tram route, and a couple of ferry stops to get from this section to another coastal area.
One thing to be aware, maybe you are, so just putting it out there:
Reducing the number of vehicles on the line is not always the best idea as i have noticed in my own city.
The voice, the intonation... ;)
Thank you so much 😀
Biffa ... Builds a canal 100m above water level then wonders why it doesn't fill ... BIG BRAIN.. love you biffa
I love it! I'd only suggest some walking bridges on a few of the corners that don't have roads. Is it possible to put the waterside restaurant and boat rental stuff on the side of a canal? Might be cool to see people puttering around enjoying the water, even without larger ship traffic.
Area name “Little Itealy”
Love your work Biffa 😁
I love canals, really does add a bit of class and luxury
If you also have walking paths between some of the blocks, you could make some money from them ^^
Such a cool area, I love the look of it !!
If you add the park like you were saying in the middle can call it “SugarCube Grove” related to tea and having the small orchard park
District: The Tea-Ducts
The canal district is just asking for a monorail station, don't you think?
