Great tips and advice. When I was a kid my Dad used to always say to me "Never pass up a chance to use a free toilet" and I now know what he meant. I'd love to see you do the Grand Union Canal challenge, that one really appeals to me.
Well done for doing the walk within four days. Done the whole walk a few years ago and I happen to live in Upper Norwood, where the route passes. Done it in a more casual way and about two sections a day. Started the day with a good breakfast and had some water and a sandwich with me, but still used the shops en route. Did travel home after my walk. Also did the whole of the London Loop walk which is a more rural affair and having provisions and adequate footwear is more essential, because amenities are more sparse en route.
Great tips thank you. It's a great route especially for beginner hikers. I can recommend Hoka trail runners to anyone looking for some cushioned shoes - they have a 5mm drop which is low but doesn't take as much transitioning into as a zero drop shoe.
I'm walking this route over autumn and winter as I want to do something that's not super muddy. Just take an extra layer in your backpack, a hat and gloves. You won't feel cold while you're moving, it's when you stop for a break that you can get cold.
Yes it's safe. I'm a woman who likes hiking alone and I always taken some basic precautions - let someone know your route in advance and message them when you finish, never wear headphones and turn and check behind you every so often to make sure no-one is following you.

Was the journey safe to walk alone? Especially in this crazy world.
