I am a 17 plus year knitter. I am a level 2 craft yarn council certified knitting instructor and I am working on my master knitter certification. First let me say that you would have an easier time knitting with cables needles. If you ever want to learn more about knitting, swatching to figure out the number of stitches I am happy to teach you. But I am really proud of you for giving this a go. It is hard. Many knitters struggle with the purl stitch. Many knitters never knit a sweater. The way you added the new color is not the normal way to add a new color. But it is the same way I use to do it too. You can put knit in time out and she will eventually behave. You did really good.

    Few things:
-yarn labels are your best friend!
-you used stockinette stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl)
-when doing stockinette stitch, you are going to knit the right side (the side with the v’s) and purl into the rows of the wrong side with the purl bumps on them
-the hole/mistake looks like an accidental yarn over
-doing sleeves on circular needles is so much easier because you can avoid all the seaming and weaving.
You did so good for this being your first time!

    • @emilydfdjkbe

I only have ever knitted scarves and a few beanies, but sweaters? That's scary to me. I've attempted to create a sweater dress a few times, but had to give up since I always messed up with the pattern (plus the pattern wasn't the easiest to follow for a beginner either). This gives me hope that I will get better at it, because I don't wanna give up trying to create clothes.
And when that happens, I'll attempt learning crochet and then to actually sew (which hasn't gone really well do far, lol)

You know? Yesterday night I tried to knit a top… (160 stitches) and I had to start over many times. I ended up feeling like a failure and just gave up. Then, I went to bed and watched this video and realised it’s okay and that it happens to every knitter. Sometimes it’s difficult to see here on TH-cam because they barely show the mistakes or the real process, so thank you. Loved it!

Totally recognise that crochet mentality, just figure it out as you go, I still refuse to work from a pattern.
A few tips from a fellow intuitive knitter:
    * Gauge so you know how much to cast on, after that you can sort of freestyle it. A good start is half the battle won.
    * Look into the Italian cast on for ribbing.
    * If you knit your ribbing on a smaller needle, also knit the first 1 or 2 rows after the rib on the small needle before switching, makes the transition look nicer.
    * Keep your crochet hook close to fix any dropped stitches or other mistakes, a lot less time consuming than unraveling all the rows.
    * Practice on different increase and decrease techniques so you can shape your parts, makes it a bit more like drafting a pattern as you would in sewing.

I SO admire your courage to dive into a project and finish it! That tells a lot about you!
I use to knit as you do, from the ‘seat of my pants’ 😂 but I have to tell you one of the most wonderful gifts I gave myself was to find a great knitter who was willing to teach me how to do it properly. The best thing I learned was how to ‘read’ my knitting and now I’m able to correct my errors as I go.
I feel like I need a book to write the things you have encouraged me to do 🤗. In fact as I write this I am sewing my about my 25th bucket hat

  • @katiesaul6227

Fun tip for when you’re learning new techniques! There’s something called a life line where you weave in scrap yarn or thread into your stitches so if you mess up and have to unravel you don’t risk dropping stitches. There are some good TH-cam videos showing how to do it :) it’s saved me a lot of time 😅

For the ribbing, it's a lot easier to do it in 2 or 3 pattern (so k3, p3 or k4, p4 or whatever) than it is to do k1, p1 because the emergent pattern is much easier to see when it's larger. You won't have to visually remember which is which, you'll be able to just see which is the knit or purl section that way. I love the color combo you chose, it's surprisingly cute.

  • @EmLovey

I reeeeally recommend circular needles if you want to knit again, you can get sets of interchangeable ones so that you have every size you need! Makes sleeves so easy as you can push the stitches back onto the cable and switch out your needle size once you’ve done the ribbing! Also definitely a good call to use chunky yarn for your first- I’ve just knit a jumper using DK and it took 3 weeks (and I’m pretty fast!) x

    • @scifigrl23
      @scifigrl23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I like circular ones too, but tbh I don't see the benefits of interchangeable ones when many patterns call for multiple circular needles of the same size. It's cheaper and faster to use regular ones.

The thing with the ribbing.. You can also get it done with an uneven number of stitches if you learn how to identify your stitches and then you'll just notice by the look if you need to knit or purl. At least that's how it was for me, it just took some time getting used to knitting 😅

You can use a crochet hook to ladder down to fix stitches. It makes it really easy to do it.

those needles are so cool! (but i would recommend trying circulars before you invest that much in a set of straight needles)

I've been crocheting for a little over a year now and a few weeks ago I tried to learn how to knit. I had Several breakdowns (like, actually crying about it) because I simply could not do it. I'll just stick to crochet

I started knitting first and crochet was like torture for me. Then I found out that you can crochet left handed and I got it lol

I love your cropped jumper, and I love the crochèted wavy one you're wearing. "Everyone still has their eye balls!" 🤣🤣
That bit made me giggle a lot! 😄
Thoroughly enjoyed it! Your tension on your knitting is so much better than mine. Im going to find the wavy sweater you did. Its inspired me to try the stitch again as I messed up whilst trying to make a baby blanket. Thanks again for your fun filled video. 😊😊🥰🥰

That's awesome!!!! First sweater that's great itoo love crochet but I've been knitting for a week now so far a sweater but didn't do sleeves yet but I did in the round and safe to say I failed but I'm going to do something new to it. Lol. It turned into an over sized vest and I'm maybe size medium and it looked like an x large so... You can imagine my disappointment in the time spent thinking I'm doing good and I used huge needles but it's all a learning experience. I'm going to try it your way though. Makes way more sense than whatever I was following. Also love the reality of oh shucks it isn't the right size let's undo. I would make the ribbing longer just to cover the tummy but that's just me lol. 😅 great job I love it

I have made many sweaters. Making a swatch is casting on about 10 stitches and knitting for 10 rows and measuring how many stitches you get to an inch and multipy that by the number of inches you need and then plan out your pattern. this would take a ton less time.

Next time you should block all of the pieces before you put it together. This way you can stretch the fabric to your wanted dimensions and make sure the pattern looks nice and clean :) Loved the video!

For ribbing you don’t always have to use smaller needles. You can to make the rubbing tighter but you don’t have to

I consider myself a beginner in both crochet and knitting even though i've been doing it for almost 10 years but i haven't really made major projects. Mostly stuck to beanies, bags, and keychains. I think i'm ready to make my 1st sweater!! You''re experience doing it seems like i can also do it!😊😊
ps you somehow remind me of another youtuber, Jordan Orme. The vibes and the humour😅
