The old city of Kashgar covers an area of 4.25 square kilometers. There are a large number of traditional Islamic houses with civil and masonry structures scattered in the city. There are about 126,800 residents in the city (2015). The Old City of Kashgar is the only labyrinth-like city block in China characterized by Islamic culture.
The old city has witnessed the historical changes of Kashgar City. The history of Kashgar Old City is the condensed history of Kashgar.
There are many bazaars scattered in the old city, and commercial activities are flourishing. Today, the old city is not only a place where residents live their daily lives, but also a must-visit attraction for foreign tourists when visiting Kashgar.
In the ancient city of Kashgar, you can judge whether this road can be interconnected with other roads based on the shape of the bricks paved on the ground.
1. Hexagonal floor tiles: It means extending in all directions and can lead to any main road in the ancient city of Kashgar.
2. Rectangular bricks slanting to the right: means leading to residents’ homes.
3. Bricks that look like upward arrows: It means that the road ahead is open and you can continue to move forward.
4. Laying horizontal bricks means that there is a dead end ahead.
