Dutch Shepherds come in three coat types, short, long, and wired. The wired type looks alot like the Werewolves from the movie Under World, but these guys are the exact opposite when it comes to personality. The Wire Haired Dutch is a sweet and capable working dog, best tasked with the job of herding.
I love that you guys show the less known breeds. It's extremely helpful because its hard to find videos about these breeds. So thank you for that. Keep doing what you're doing :)
Anyway I do not know if this dog is a show line dog....cause my dutch shepherd is a bit different...they are really good as a body guard...nobody can enter in my property or in my car or can touch me without to have problems...big problems with my dog...and he is just 2 years old....25kg of muscles...and He has got another year of growing. I am training my dog as a utility dog and he is a fast learning but dutch shepherd is extremely energetic and dominante dog....so not for people that are a bit lazy or not ready to work with them...everyday!

so they took a laekenois and crossed it with a groenendael and they call that a "WIRE HAIRED DUTCH SHEPHERDS"
They remind me of a smaller version of the Irish wolfhound
No Way....they are really different. I have done a video of my dutch shepherd playing with a Young wolfhound...but the level of energy of dutch shepherd is too high also for the higest dog in the world :-D I am so sorry that there are so many people that do not know about this kind of dogs. if You said berger picard dog I can agree a bit as they most probably mixed that one with some greyhound loooong time ago...but this is a shepherd not a hunter...it is a big mistake.

Very interesting looking dog...almost has a giant Schnauzer appearance. Those pointy ears he has definitely looks similar to the werewolf in *The Howling* in my opinion

Interesting and unique breed! Do one about the Belgian Groenendael! That would be very cool, especially since we see a lot of Malinois stuff but not enough of the breed's other variants
Don't know if there are much in the US, even over here they are rare, very rare.
They aren't really rare over here. Not as common as Mals by any stretch but I wouldn't exactly call them rare.
What IS rare is the Belgian Groenendael bred for working purposes. People ARE doing it, but those lines are mostly not in the USA. Many of them have the old fashioned look in the face. Normal skull and face in terms of canine proportions. Most show groenies here have very skinny faces and the eyes are so close together when you look. They get "Collie Eye." And almost no stop. Not normal.
I have my second Wire Haired Dutch Shepherd called Che who became 12 years last month... "my ones in a lifetime dog"... my first WHDS called Kimbo became 12 and 3 months...ones you had a WHDS you'll never want another breed.. even the Dutch people are asking what breed this dog it is... since the're very rare even in here in the Netherlands... and ones they know him they love him ...

The personality of this DS sounds considerably different from other Dutch SHepherds. I realize the shorthaireds are the most popular for police work. As a result longhaireds are being bred separately and registered with European kennel clubs including the FCI.
But I hope like hell that SOMETIMES people interbreed the coat types because if you're really that worried about enlarging the gene pool, that's your main recourse.
If there are only 500 of these dogs in the world, I expect that now or later, you're going to see tons of health issues crop up. At the very least small litters and immune related disorders, even if it just comes down to chronic allergies.
They should indeed be interbred, but to my knowledge it hardly ever happens... Which really is too bad for the breed and the health of individual dogs. It is an issue in many breeds though, most breeders hate the thought of interbreeding, even within different coat varieties or closely related breeds of dogs.
There are two distinct "sub-breeds" of short hair Dutchies, the normal FCI lines an the KNPV Terminator lines which are mixed with Malinois.
I don't like seeing working breeds stuck in the city, but I'm glad to hear she does training and exercise with him.

My understanding of dutch shepherds is that they have the same energy levels and exercise needs as a Malinois. Is it different with the wire coat?
I think that they have the same energy and strength. I have a Dutch shepherd, she has a lot of energy, like crazy! When she was 2-7 she never got tired, and she swam in the river for such a long time, and played In it. She just always wants to play. She is also strong, she has a big force bite. Trying to get the stick from her mouth was big work! And now she is 9-10 she is still so fast and has a lot of endurance! Well, her mother was a Belgian Malinois, and her father was a Dutch shepherd..
Those are bred that way. A true Dutch Shepherd is a very livable dog, though very mischievous.
Dutch Shepherd have lots of drive and need lots of activity, but they're not as insane as the Malinois. Though the working lines often involves crossing between these two breeds.
The Belgian Shepherd comes in short hair (Malinios), long hair (Groenendael) and wire hair (Laekenois).
In both the Belgian and Dutch Shepherd, the long and wire hair variants are a bit softer in character, bit less drive, and a bit more suited for a life as a family pet.
Trust me, you don't want a working line Malinois or DS as a pet.

Dutchies require extensive exercise and stimulation. They have the potential to literally eat your home, and possibly you. Obedience, training, and socialization is more than important.

This dog is American bred from Dutch lines. Unfortunately, the breeder did not take the time to register the litter, so I can't link a pedigree for you. The sire is from Inlands Akker, and the mother is American bred from a Loksterland and Fuseriersnest.

The information of that only 500 is not correct because here in Holland we have over 2500 so it's not correct. and they are not yet recognized as Dutch shepherds.

They do shed, but it;s the undercoat. It doesn't fall on the floor because it gets caught up in the wiry hair. Very nice for cleaning up. But you do have to groom. You can't let the coat go wild.
This lady seems to have a handle on things but it makes me cringe when people buy hardcore working dogs because of the way they look. This could have gone badly wrong. I know a beautiful Airedale that was purchased because it looks like a teddy bear. It now drags it’s owner around on a lead whilst wearing a muzzle because a lack of training has resulted in a full on dangerous dog.

shes wrong about this dog not being a protective animal. she would be very much surprised as to how quick he would respond if he were to perceive a real threat to his owner.
apparently she doesn't know much about dogs or at least doesn't know this breed and it's natural instincts and his deeply entrenched DNA that is only dormant as long as she is safe.
bear in mind he is a Dutch Shepherd and his bloodline is that of a protection type. he is after all the very close cousin of the Belgian Malinois and the 2 other Dutch Shepherds.
She is very naive to pronounce to the You Tube world that this dog would not protect her. it would be a fool who would dare attempt to hurt this girl and she would have avery hard time trying to drag this beast off of the idiot who believes this dog would run away from danger.

Yes, the number published in the Dutch Breed book is 550 in 2017.
I can't stand wired haired dogs i prefer the short haired dogs! But other than that these dogs are great and have a great personality. The short-haired dutch shepherds is similar, just different looks. I think the Dutch-Shepherds are the best shepherds out there. The german shepherds are over the hill and the Malinois are way to energetic and nervous for my liking.
