Army Veteran, Lauren Trathen shares her amazingly beautiful life with her service dog, who happens to be the world's cutest Beauceron. Lauren was involved in a serious car accident. Her injuries from the accident left her with brain trauma, suffering from seizures and the physical injuries. When it came to her rehabilitation, Lauren chose to forgo a wheel chair and chose Jamais, a Beauceron to be her service animal. Not only does Jamais assist in her physical recovery but mentally and spiritually as well. Jamais is loving, confident, and watchful nature are the perfect prescription for helping Lauren live life to the fullest. Beauceron are amazing pets as well as working dogs. If you plan on getting this dog breed, be prepared for an active lifestyle. This breed is not a couch potato and requires physical as well as mental stimulus. Lauren has Jamais participating in dog sports like herding, dock diving, obedience, and even doing dog tricks. collie speed fox sports westminster dog show agility classes

I have owned several Beaucerons. My first came from a farm where its parents worked on a small cow herd. The second I owned was Eider de la Joie de Rodi: she was a very strong-willed and protective female I traveled with a lot and hiked with in the Pyrenees. Eider lived up to age 15 and never gave any sign of physical decline. My third Beauceron lived a short life being taken with severe hip disease: Aniouk was a gorgeous loving eight-month old Beauceron when we had to put him to "sleep": he would have been crippled all his life. My fourth Beauceron was Brook du Perouet. She was a darling dog, as loving as you can possibly imagine. She passed away this July 19 2017 from acute leukemia at age 11. Brook was my "friend". Like Eider, we went all over the place, from downtown Bordeaux to ocean beaches, to restaurants, taking a local bus, hiking in the Pyrenees. N'Deneb du Perouet is now our 2 month-old puppy and she only just got here. A whole new story to write... Our Beauceron dogs are part of the family. The description given in this documentary is accurate and should well be headed before even contemplating owning a Beauceron. Beauceron are strong tempered, loyal, powerful, physically very active, highly intelligent dogs that need rules and firm handling. Unless properly trained they can become insufferable. If properly trained, they are the best of companions one can hope for.

You have so much to add here! Interesting how your farm dog lived the longest, healthiest life. The show circuit always flips out over dogs that are not from "breeders of merit" with the show dog way of doing things. Yet time and time again, they produce dogs with issues. Perhaps they could learn a thing or two from the older ways.

Sir, as I'm wondering if the beauceron is a right choice for me, I'd like to ask you, based on your experience, how strong (if any) is the innate, natural instinct to protect the household and the owner in an average beauceron? Could you honestly rely on your dogs if need be, i.e. someone tried to harm you? Or is it rather improbable without proper training? Thank you, all the best!

Yes, I couldn't agree more! My dog Dee is aging not so well due to coming from neglected/abusive beginnings. I rescued her years ago, she was a rottie-mix that only weighed about 40 lbs.😑 Luckily, at the time I was working as an assistant at a vet hospital and got her the help she needed so badly. Today, she's like my kid, everything revolves around her. I know this is probably going to be my last year with her.. all I can do is make her as comfortable as possible and give her as much quality time as I can. She's the only thing I know I can depend on in my life.. I think a lot of people take the loyalty and truly pure love of their dogs for granted.

I adopted what I thought, in my ignorance, was a mutt headed for the public kennel 3 years ago, turns out it was a full french shepherd or beauceron, in fact super similar to Jamais but a bit bigger and male. They're exactly as described; super intelligent, sensitive, smart, active and assertive, but they are stubborn and difficult to train for inexperienced people. Even though I've already owned 5 dogs, 3 of them large breeds I still had three small accidents with him nipping at strangers (one of them chasing playfully, one of them out of an on leash reaction to the person approaching me from behind and the other with someone who was lurking right outside my home) before coming to terms to the fact my structure wasn't enough and had to tighten it and work even more with the dog (I am with him all day so I have a lot of chances to do it luckly). The dog's improved towards strangers through stimulation control but keep in mind it's a very intelligent, very hard-working and active breed that need constant exercises and training both physical and mental, if you're not an active trainer and constantly engage the dog in activities and command structure he can give in to natural instincts, which in this case is "shepherding" other people or you.
This is not a breed for people who don't have the experience or understand what having a large breed working dog is like. If your shifts are long or you're tired when you get home consider getting another type of dog. Noisy or super stimulating environments like a city can make them extra difficult to have. I am, in fact, preparing to move out of my apartment to a country house just to, among other things, make him a happier dog (and me a happier person overall). They want to be with their owners all the time and have their own space (shared with family) indoors but also need space to run, chase and play safely. If you're willing to put the time, the effort and the structure necessary these are excellent dogs that will instinctively defend you and your home and will be the loyalest of companions.

Excellent information! and vital for people to know. So many times people will get a large breed thinking it is naturally trained and sweet like in the video. What they don't realize is the Share number of hours and consistent training it takes to mold them into the ideal companion.

I got my Sweets who is a Beauceron in 2009 she came as a rescue out of the midwest.. I knew I wanted a smart dog and boy did I get it.. She is everything I could have ever wished for.. and way more.. She is a very accomplished thief.. she can steal money out of your purse or take you hat and gloves right in front of you and you’ll never see it happening.. She doesn’t destroy them she just wants to have them.. She’s funny and fun to be with and requires a Lot of me time.. She loves to learn and is very adept at following instruction either verbal or hand signals.. Now that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a mind of her own.. and doesn’t mind using it.. when she takes something she wants a treat for you to have it back.. They are a breed unto themselves.. and I love them.. I truly can't even imagine life without her.. she completes my world.. and she expects me to complete hers..LoL.

He doesn't act any differently from when I first met him except that he sleeps a little longer lol. He is a total puppy and always trying to make us laugh and get our attention. I have owned mutliple dogs and have worked with dogs for years and have never met a dog with such a unique personality. We unfortunately live in an apartment but our complex has a nice dog park so he is able to play a lot, he's the reason we pay such high rent haha. I'm so thankful I was introduced to this breed, I will never get a different breed of dog.

I have a small dog from Heart to Heart rescue, at age two we purchased a Wisdom panel DNA test because it was clear her bread was mis categorized. Finding out that she is a Rat Terrier, Whippet, Beauceron etc. was extremely helpful in understanding her needs. Beaucerons are not a common breed and I am so happy to have just watched your documentary on them. Thank you Lauren for the great information dating back the 1500's in France that is amazing, also that they are part of the foundation for Great Danes and a favorite of mine the Rottwieler.

I'm french. Knowing beaucerons by my parents and have a puppy myself right now. Cutting ears is now forbidden in France (since 2004 for LOF). Beaucerons are typically french shepherds. They are strong, courageous, loving and lovely, but also determined, a little rough playing and need trust in theirselves and their owner. It's a perfect breed for countryside (cities also can fit but they need to be outside lot of their time and activities). Excellent working dogs, good guardians, used to serve in army and police, can walk hours and hours. Love them❤️🙌🏻

I have a Beauceron and he is approximately three years old. We fostered him for 1 day before we knew he was the dog for us. My Zeus (his name) was abused and is disabled but everything you said in your video, I 100% agree with. My boy is a little more laid back but I live in the mountains and he has free run because he has earned that trust with us. He has over 50 toys and surgically removes the squeakers from all of them lol. His dog friends live all around us and they always go to visit eachother and play outside everyday. My boy has an issue leading small children around by their hand. He applies light pressure but doesn't bit. Sometimes is scares children even though he isn't hurting them. He goes everywhere with my husband and I. We fight a lot on who's turn it is to take him 😅. He is very smart and intelligent but he can definitely hold a grudge after being groomed or nails cut. These really are amazing dogs. Best of luck with your sweet girl!

Beautiful breed and beautiful relationship there. I really have not had experience with this breed, but had a friend who bred them and I learned a lot from her. I have always thought this breed was beautiful.

It's amazing how dogs can sense something about our bodies, internally, that we cannot even sense ourselves. There is just some kind of empathy that exists between humans and dogs that is much more difficult to find in other animals.

I've had two Beaucerons so far and can only agree 100%. Mine were from animal shelters as large black breeds are usually there for MUCH longer. Know the breed since 38 years and also friends only made positive experiences. They do need LONG DAILY WALKS, love to play and steal something once in a while (like an empty kitchen roll, old single sock).

Wow, I've been doing a lot of research on these dogs because I am looking for a new service dog prospect so seeing somebody else woth one as a service dog makes me happy.

Definitely worth it. Mine is not a service dog but is an an Emotional Support dog for my husband. When my husband is feeling blue, our boy makes him laugh. When my husband starts feeling anxious, our boy calms him down right away. He pushes my husband to get up moving and going outside everyday.. but he is a lazy bed potato when we want to relax especially if my husband is having a very bad day.

Just wanted to say.... what an amazing person Lauren is. She is a great dog handler, and is dedicated loving owner. I wish there were more understanding dog owners like her out there. Wish her the very best for the future. 💞from Australia
I am an five time owner of a sheep herding dog, the Australian working kelpie, and years ago was looking for the original breeding of the kelpie.
The written origin of the kelpie here in Australia is inaccurate saying kelpie come from Scottish collies. The original breeders weren’t going to tell their breed secrets to the competition back in the day.
It is clear to me the actual origin of the Australian Working Kelpie is imported Black and Tan French sheep herding breed called the Beauceron crossed with a dingo. 🐕 And continuation of further lines of breeding through the years, created one of the best dogs in the world for working.
Now the kelpie is sold all over the world for working in rescue and stock work. They are a fantastic all rounder with the correct training and love.
Now days they breed kelpies with border collies and these dogs are also excellent at stock work.

I think this is a very good portraying of our ancient breed the Beauceron. Mine is going on 10 months old, and definitely all of what is being said here. We do not cut their ears anymore, they look a little goodfier, but still quite imposing a presence, specially because of their very dark eyes that do not miss anything. Beautiful companions, they were the dog for everything in farms, and good at everything. I also have a Rottweiler, and they have common traits such as being faithful to death to their master. But if the Beauceron is more challenging to raise, its intelligence beats the Rott any time. The Rott is a disciplined soldier, the Beauceron a franc-tireur, thinking more. Love them both to bits!!!

I am so glad to have come across this video. I love all dogs (prefer large dogs myself) and learning about them. This is the first time I've heard of this breed. I would have guessed a cross of doberman/shepard. I can see she adores you, as she looks up to you while being petted. Thank you for sharing this with us, as I found this quite informative. Best wishes to you both. 🐶

The way you talk about your dog is the way I feel about my service dog also as he is the perfect dog for me that I was able to self select. Since I was able to self select I also self-trained and it created this magnificent bond with my dog and I would not trade that for the best training in the world. People tell me that I care more about that dog than I do the people in my life and they're right about that because there's nothing that I can do to make that dog turn his back on me and the littlest things that I can do can make a human. Until I had him there was nothing that could get me out of myself isolation but my dedication and sense of obligation to his needs and happiness gets me moving everyday even if he can only get me to go for a walk.😅

She's a service dog. So she'd take the dog to work. What a cute girl. She looks freaky like my doberman Shepherd mix. Just a slightly lighter frame.
