  • The Australian Shepherd is a breed of herding dog from the United States. Despite their name, the Australian Shepherd dog breed originated in the western United States, not Australia, around the time of the Gold Rush in the 1840s. Originally bred to herd livestock, they remain working dogs at heart.

I had a Aussie for nearly 15 years, his name was Charly, we lost him last April and I miss his terribly. Watching this video makes me smile because he acted so much like these dogs. Thank you!

@@graceessi5768 Yes he was very protective. He was goofy and loved to play and even though he was very trusting and loved people I have no doubt if he thought my husband or I was in danger he would have protected us.

Our Finnegan developed epilepsy after 10 years. Controllable during the 1st year, but sadly, the condition became progressively worse. Still, we were very happy to have Finn while we did!! A beautiful and lovely boy ❤

We have our second Aussie. Pebbles died 5 years ago. She was 16. Sasha is 13 weeks old and just as amazing, and challenging as pebbles was.
Great dogs if you have the time to teach them properly, and give them something to do. We are in the process of building an agility course in the back yard for her.
I will say that if you are a first time puppy parent the Aussie may not be a good choice.

I just got her 4 days ago. She's 2.5 months old. I got mine from a rescue. She was quiet and calm on the first day, now she is wild and crazy but in a good way. I have an older cairn terrier too who is mild. I have a half acre for her to run and play. She is loveable and is already learning. She uses the puppy pad! Which is funny because she will play outside but do her business inside.

They look exactly like sheep dogs - except most sheep dogs are black and white though I've seen others who are similar colours to these - who have never been anywhere near Australia or the US. They breed/use them in Korea as well and they're also from dogs whose parents were originally from Welsh sheep dogs.

They very much are a one person dog mine used to stand two legs on each side of me every time my husband kissed me and show him his teeth, it was cute but biting should be corrected. Be careful with correction they are smart and sensitive. Bring treats and all will work out.

@@hitman6945 Mine dodges petting on the head. He likes the neck & ears but loves to his rear flanks scratched. They have extra padding there - to protect their hips from being injured from kicks from livestock.
Mine has never worked, but he sure backs up to me for a “butt scratch” - it is like my official job.
If my husband & I are kissing or hugging - he is barking & whining till we stop or reprimand him. I swear, if we were younger when we got him, he would’ve been a form of birth control. 🤣🤣
But seriously, If your friend’s dog is snapping at you -I’d keep my hands back. Our dog barks until we open the door & he is all happy to greet whoever is there. He has never snapped at anyone ever.
Hopefully, the situation has resolved itself in a good way since your post.

I take my girl out 4 or more times a day in my back yard to play ball for 20 ins to 1/2 hour every time and she also plays in the house running around with our Maltese or they play and chase each other outside. She I very protected of our Maltese they are 6 mos. different in age. she still eats everything she can, she is 13 months old. A friend of mine that breeds them told me that Aussie can take up to 16 mos. to grow and 2 years to mentally grow up. up until 2 years they can go from being puppy to adolescence to an adult in seconds, and boy does my girl do that. But I love her.

my Aussie has one blue eye and one marbled eye. But my Shetland had heterochromia (one blue one brown eye). They have found out that docking their tails the poor puppies feel pain and do cry out. That is so cruel that is why most countries stop it. But not in America because they really do not care how the dog feels pain, only what those humane idiots what for themselves. My Aussie is black and white with more black but very little brown (hardly any brown) on mine. Ans she is very stubborn at times. Mine girl is a very excellent guard dog and protector to me. I got a DNA test and found out the only thing I should watch out for is MRD1 and my vet said it wasn't to worry about.
