- Welcome to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!! A true city for foodies of all kinds.
I take you on a food tour of Kuala Lumpur where everything is cheap and delicious! We're not experts in Malaysian cuisine so I asked a local food fan-turned-friend to show me all the amazing spots. We were blown away by all the flavors, textures, and variety on this food tour. Hands down one of the best food experiences in our life!

Thanks for this series. It confirms many statements the Food Ranger made a few years ago. I’m adding Malaysia to my list of future destinations.
You definitely need to go!! It's a wonderful city and the food is to die for!
@@AleeseLightyear i know.. Malaysian food is too die for...hahahaha . Thank u for visiting Malaysia and exploring this country ... Thank u
Pls visit Malaysia one fine day
Actually, it's not 'Jackfruit', it is 'Cempedak' fried as stated at the stall, 'Cempedak(in English also is called Cempedak)' fruit can easily be found in South East Asia country...'Cempedak' same genus with Jackfruit & Breadfruit... The sweet potato doughnut is called 'Keria', the version that you eating is coating with diluted Coconut Palm Sugar, the other version coating with diluted coarse sugar.. Murtabak is a stretched flat bread with mixture of egg, chicken/beef, sliced onions & spices filling, usually be dipping with onion pickles or curry gravy.. The drink in the cup should be stir first before drink it.. 😊
True, she had cempedak fritters instead. Oh i miss it so much!
You’ve just made me realise that I didn’t do much in Malaysia 😭😭😭 I might just have to go back for this food 😮
GO back!!
✌️😁🇲🇾♥️🇺🇲
The foodie capital of the world,MALAYSIA! Period!
Malaysia is perfect for the food lovers~😊♥️
soooo perfect!
Most people don't know us Johorean do not eat otak-otak on it's own. we eat it with plain rice, with some sambal (usually sambal belacan) and kicap (soy sauce).
I remember when younger, when we suddenly have guests at home, I would be the one to go out, buy 3-4 HUNDRED otak-otak to add to the menu at home. hanging out at otak-otak stalls, it's not strange seeing orders of between 4 to 6 hundred pieces. Nowadays I don't see any people eat it with rice anymore.
Anyway, I'm glad you got the "standard' nasi lemak, just the rice, sambal, ikan bilis (anchovies) and ground nuts, and in small banana leaf packs, not the over the top with all the extra "lauk" / dishes that most vloggers get in the capital.
Cool video! Hope you enjoy your stay in Malaysia!
I'm a johorean and this is the first time i heard of eating otak2 with rice o.o so that's the old way of eating it??
@@ncboo quite old yeah. last time I bought otak2 in the hundreds was back in 1990/1991. I still eat it with rice though. Nasi + kicap + telur goreng + otak2 + sambal belacan. Dia punya kick.. hehehehe
I'm from Penang, you must try asam laksa . a fish broth soup noodle and char kuey teow, a stir fried he fen dish. Can't wait to see your Penang trip video!
Malaysia is a well kept secret of best balanced flavours by chefs all around the world ...most great chefs have been to Malaysia to learn what makes a dish "balanced" in flavours...they won't advertise it ...they want to keep it to themselves...famous chefs who have been here Tony Bourdain, Gordon, John torode , Stephanie izart ...etc
So good!
Exactly
Hello there, looks like u had a great time in KL. So, i want to talk about the jackfruit. What u have eaten is not jackfruit but a fruit called 'cempedak'. There's no English word for it as far as I know. Both of these two are extremely different in taste and texture. Jackfruit is more firm and crunchy while cempedak is more soft. We only make cempedak into fritters but not the jackfruit.
Btw, the mysterious doughnut is called 'keria'. They're made from sweet potatoes.Hope this helps:)
Thanks for the tips!!!
I'd gave the first one 'fried Chempedak' 10/10. A must try food items before you leave this planet.
Dale Philip (TH-camr) also had good impression on that 😎.
Welcome to Malaysia 🇲🇾. I enjoyed your videos of living in China.
Glad you like them! There will be more lol
Video quality is 💯, very good
I think you can get more viewers with better thumbnails. Clean, consistent.
You wanna create thumbnails for me?!
Enjoy Malaysia truly Asia foods !😍😋😋😋
Aleese, the famous Malaysian Roti in Penang is a life-changing must-try!🤤😋😍It's a thin, light, crispy, fluffy Asian pancake-like bread served with curry chicken for dipping. The balance of flavors and texture is super satisfying and ingenious.
Thanks for the tips!
I just wanna travel and eat all the food! ❤
ME TOOOOO!
Most people look at Cempedak and mistake it for Jackfruit because both look alike. However cempedak has a softer texture which makes it a better choice to deep fry. Jackfruit has a harder texture, and usually we do not fry it. So if you see a 'jackfruit' being fried, it's 100% a cempedak. Jackfruits are eaten as they are. Not sure if there are any cultures where they eat jackfruits differently, but Malaysians usually eat it as it is. Jackfruit seeds are sometimes used in curries.
Welcome to our beautiful Malaysia 😘😘😊❤️❤️🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾
Such a lovely country!
Loving the Malaysian vlogs. Hopefully the rest of Asia in the future !
Yay! Thank you so much! This is my first time traveling and vlogging in outside of China!
The inflation hit cempedak very hard. Just bought cempedak at RM1/piece last week in KL.
Its actually Cempedak not Jackfruit. Nice to see you enjoy locals food and you have locals friends to enjoyed with which is even better. If you want to try more local Malay food in KL do visit Kampung Baru preferably in the evening and night where the place become more alive 👌
Ohhhhh It's not jackfruit!! Thanks for telling me! They look and taste so similar!
@@AleeseLightyear Both cempedak & nangka are called Jackfruit in English
Both cempedak & nangka are called Jackfruit in English
@@edamame5540 its different fruit, Cempedak (Artocarpus integer) if you want to be specific. There is no english name just call it cempedak, just like durian n rambutan
@@AleeseLightyear its the same family, but different fruit. Cempedak is more sweet n delicious when fried 👌
No harm adding extra kilos 🤩 when the food is so "sedap". I cant hav enough of all the choices of food though i m a local😂. Njy ur "makan" time.
Pandan is life. Pandan forever
yummmmy!!
mystery doughnut = kuih keria

Wow, looks like you are having the time of your life, girl!
love ur energy!!!! hope u enjoy your stay here 🥰
When in Penang, you must try their otak2. It's steamed, very flavourful with a smooth texture. Im sure you'll love it!
Also, the snack at 9:03 isn't ondeh2. It's Chinese rice pudding. Ondeh2 are glutinous rice balls with palm sugar filling. Don't miss out on them next time you're in Malaysia. They're delicious!
Anothet must try in Penang is oh chien (oyster omelette)
a Nyonya and Malay food actually.. and u need learn about Nyonya history.. very interesting and one of our unique culture in Malaysia.. its a mixed of Chinese and Malay
That green jelly like thing with coconut called Onde-onde, there's another version of it. It's like little balls with brown sugar in it. I hope you got to try it. The brown sugar just explodes in your mouth 😍

Yes it was!
That thing which u were eating at 9:27 is not onde-onde but kueh kosui instead & it's green in color cuz the flour has been mixed with the juice from pandan leaves
It's so difficult for me to get the names straight!! Thanks for telling me!

Great video Aleese!!!! I love that you make an English translation of the food - hope it can give awareness to the world how great our foods are! hahahaah

Street stall cuisine is as good as five-star hotel cuisine, all menus can be obtained at a cheaper price, so eat until you're tired😀😋😋
Hi Aleese , Malaysian living in Beijing here. Very happy to see your video on Malaysia!
Awesome! Thank you!
If u guys want to eat delicious otak2, u guys shiuld try it at chowkit at night, the stall is opposite of pejabat pos chowkit. At the kedai kelantan
Thanks for the tip!!!
Love malaysian food
When I come to Malaysia, I would definitely try out those delicious authentic Malay food and cuisine. How often do you come across a traditional Malay restaurant or cafes in the US and Europe? I mean, Chinese and Indian food can be found in many parts of the world including the US lol
Your amazing 😮
you have landed in FOOD HEAVEN. good for you
100% THAT!
Makan-makan. Banyak makan 😊

I am so gonna start eating the murtabak like she did..
Wow look at your food addiction... Make me jealous.. I can't put in that much 😂😂😂enjoyed it while you can🎉🎉
hahahah I wanted to eat more, but was too stuffed.
pan fried bread = murtabak
Visit ICC Pudu too. It's a Chinese Market. You'll find very different Malaysian food there. It's a local market but tourists visit too. It's in Kuala Lumpur too. Hope you make a trip to Penang and Redang Island too. 😊
Those places are on my list for the next trip! I didn't have the time this trip.
Kelantan is another foodie capital of Malaysia!
I'll add it to my list for the next visit!
Malays previously own some sections of Indo-China named Champa. Dak means fruit. So, Campadak is derived.
Hi girl in kl must visit genting highlands weather amazing.
Yes for sure! I'll save it for my next trip!
You sure know how to enjoy M'sian food... girl 😊
Thanks to my local friends!!
The food was tasty apparently.
buttermilk chef is so look alike korean actor choi moo sung.
🤣🤣
4:49 Those are definitely banana leaves. I'm surprised those guys said coconut leaves lol 💀
That first one is not jackfruit. It is cempedak a cousin of jackfruit.
I had no idea! Hahahah
this is totally unrelated but, youre so pretyyyy!!
💓💓💓 Thank you!
Oh My heart just stop when your murtabak about to fall on the ground😅
🤣🤣🤣 It was almost a disaster!
Surga makanan dunia..
Where is the buttermilk chicken noodle located?
I don't even know lol
Love to see that you enjoy the food in Malaysia
I love it!
steamed rice cake = apom
Hi, may I know where is this place in Malaysia?
Pandan leaves = Screwpine Leaves. Very fragrantful leaves for making desert cakes. Mostly KLumpur food are fusionized with multi racial cultured ethnicity flavours.. There's no where else in the world to get these special delicacies
❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yes, wait till you reach Penang, the food capital of SE Asia. Maybe also Ipoh. Wait, do you miss American food? I am a US (Oregon) grad decades ago. If you miss American food, we can point you to some.
YESSSS I can't wait to go to Penang! It's on my list for the fall to visit. Of course, I miss American food. I especially miss pecan pie, turkey sausage, texas toast, cottage cheese and root beer!!
Usually you don't eat at Ramadan Bazaar because all muslim are fasting. It is kind of impolite to eat in front of them when they are fasting 😅😅
Everyone was obviously taking their food to go and I mentioned there were no seats. 90% of the time I left the bazaar and sat on a curb and ate. Don't think anyone was really bothered by me, the hungry tourist.
Any drinks you buy, you need to stir it first.
Any Malay's drinks, you need to tell them to reduce sugar to half, the correct standard of public drinks. Don't understand why Malays drinks are so sweet. Maybe they eat spicy and their tongue are numb can't taste the overly sweet drinks they prepared.
🤗🇲🇾
No Ramlee Burger ...???
I know!! I had no time!
✌️😁🇲🇾♥️🇺🇲
Im malaysian but i never wentttt🥵
Visitors try to return on a layover just to eat...
That's gonna be me!!
just making me HUNGRY
Penang is not the food capital, except for the Chinese maybe.
Penang Food is International Food, not for Malays. Its Chinese Food. Chinese Food Capital 1. Ipoh. PERAK, 2. Penang 3. Johor 4. Kuala Lumpur
That's not jackfruit. That's cempedak. They do look the same though. But actually the taste is quite different from jackfruit.
So many ppl have commented saying that! 🙈🙈🙈
This is chempedak and not jackfruit.
An ask for less or no sugar on the drink...
Otak means brains... i eat the otak2 with rice on the side..
Pandan is the Asian Vanilla
that's such a good way to compare it!
I wasn't expecting it to be sooooooo sweet. Next time I know!
Its Otah, not otak.
Foodies are spoilt for choice in Malaysia.
Such an infinite variety of food and drink.
So, Aleeze, how much weight have you lost? 😂
all the weight I've lost was gained back in KL!
@@AleeseLightyear
Don't worry about it! Enjoy yourself!!
I envy you!! I am stuck in London! 😱😭
What with train strikes and rain, I have to put up with my own lousy cooking.
Can only drool while you enjoy the lovely flavourful and varied Malaysian food!
Enjoy the epicurean paradise of Malaysia!!
@@AleeseLightyear hahahahaha...
Malaysian food is not really that good...
Thailand is better...
I need to go to Thailand and see!!
