Notice how Pamela never once smiled again. She gave them the behaviours they wanted, but her spirit is so broken. She is only doing what they say to avoid the discomfort of the yelling and harsh grabbing of her face, not because she feels better doing this. They took away her stimming movements that she used to comfort herself, and left her with no form of comfort (except THEIR definition of comfort, which for some reason is physical touch that is often uncomfortable for autistic people) unless she performs what they are forcing her to do.
Really interesting to see early applied behavioral analysis. There's a ton that's really good about this science but also as we see with Pamela and the doctor's response to her identification of yellow - a lot of opportunity for problematic behavior on the side of the doctors. Anyways- the "bizarre behavior" is called stemming and is something almost everybody does (whether consciously or not).
I wonder where those children ended up and how their lives were when they became adults... my son has severe autism and it's so hard to live knowing he's not going to be able to have what we think is a normal life :(
Seeing how touch is a major issue with children with autism, it's a plus the doctors/therapists heavily incorporate touch as positive part of the treatment process! Though some techniques may come across as harsh and a bit crude, it's what they thought was most effective during that period.
I felt like I just watched 16 minutes of abuse and manipulation on innocent children and the adults trying to make them into children that they may never be. I think instead of making these kids into who WE want them to be we should help them be the best that THEY can be.
This is an educational film. It’s not abuse. It’s for Drs, clinics, educators, parents… These films are what gave professionals the motivation to improve services.
Wenn man mich so anschreien würde und so stark klopfen würde wie der Doktor bei Pamela würde ich wahrscheinlich abhauen 😢 das erschreckt einen doch total 😢 die arme 😢
Yes !! It worked! How exciting these kids have a better chance of exceeding in this life wev live and being some what independent and communicate to protect themselves from unwanted things without punishment or misunderstanding this is very good
Well FabianoRossi IS An Idiot Who Has. No Empathy like Many Others this day in age. He should be ashamed Be glad he’s not as Severely Disabled and or even Autistic. Theirs always a 1 in 19 chance You can be Born Disabled or You CAN Have A Health Issue Suddenly or get into a Car Accident and You can always sadly be Disabled from them 😢 don’t make fun of Autistic people or anyone who is disabled.

It’s sad but that’s the way things were in the 1960s and poor Pamela really did look depressed.

You're fucking sick, thinking it's funny for them to do that to a child. Disgusting
