I used to be completely ignorant in the matter. I used to think non-verbal people couldn’t understand what people were saying. I’ve since been corrected. They understand everything and it must be very frustrating for them that so many people have that misunderstanding.
I have level 3 autism and I'm nonspeaking. I type to communicate the community prefers to go by nonspeaking rather than nonverbal. Cause it suggests we don't know words that's what nonverbal means. Without words. And now I can communicate with an AAC tablet
How I wish I could meet you and sit and share a cup of coffee and listen to more of your story! Thank you. We have a 18 yr old non verbal autistic son who is currently in a residential home and somehow we don’t understand why the school and/or home won’t work more diligently with him to use his iPad to communicate. It’s like they gave up because when he uses it he gets so frustrated that they say it triggers behaviors. I just can’t believe that it has to end that way!! Anyway- thank you so much for this inspiring and like Gavin said- encouraging story!!! God Blesa your family!
To Gavin and his mother thank you so much for sharing your story this was so inspirational to me and gives me so much hope for my children, with God all things are possible.
I really appreciate this inspirational and educational video. My son is 29 years old and I am trying to get him an IPAD like this one. Gavin has a heart of gold :).
Got diagnosed last year in adulthood and I’m verbal but I can certainly see some similarities though I hide mine. My family used to wonder why I’d go off or do the things I do and he puts it very well, we see the things others’s don’t. I used to stare at my hands for ages and look at all the lines in my hands. I notice patterns among other things. I did play but in some restricted way. Though I have no special skills and I’m just average intelligence. I tried to hide so many symptoms but my Mum would seek help and then I would because I was just struggling to cope. I moved in and out of my parents’ house. Finally a key worker for something else found out my family wanted an assessment (I didn’t think I had it and went in to prove them wrong) and she pushed for a diagnoses. She must have noticed something that so many missed. Well apparently I have autism. I’m in supported housing for now (my own flat) and I hope to try get a more normal life. But damn I wish this was all picked up much earlier. Thanks for sharing your story anyway. It’s interesting to see the similarities and differences along the spectrum from verbal and non-verbal. God Bless these wonderful parents who devote their lives to their children. This has to be challenging on the daily & as the parents get older, more so. This mom is delightful!
It is bitter/sweet and overall awe inspiring to here the words of these people. Just the sheer knowing that there is a whole individual in every one, and wants to be heard and loved. I hear you, Gavin!

Happy to see Gavin interact and express very confidently. When I see him I remember my son's struggle. He is also non verbal autistic boy. Being a father I will be happy to interact with his parents. Request you to please let me know how can we connect with you?

Jason- This is very well done. Congrats! Gavin- Thank you SO much for sharing! You have given me so much encouragement as I am a Mommy to two beautiful boys with Autism. Keep up the good work. I can't wait to buy your book! Cindy- You are an awesome Mom!!! I will remember to ask my boys if they have anything to add. What a great question. As parents, we spend a lot of time asking the questions, but how right you are to let our kids take the reigns, too. Thank you so much for doing this video!
Thank you. It was a lot of fun to make, but very time consuming. Gavin & Cindy were a lot of fun to interview. I know we will have more projects together in the future.
Jason did do a fantastic job on this project. Gavin and I are so honored to be part of it. Thank you for all your kind words. Autism is a journey and we have to make the most of it. Gavin has taught me so much and I am thankful to have him as a son. Best of luck to you with your boys. Please keep in touch. Both Gavin and I are on facebook and the non profit we are part of is Autism Solution Pieces. :)
Hi Gavin! As a verbal (speaking) autistic I am excited to hear from my non-verbal brother. Kudos to you for your persistence and to your mom for being so supportive.
I’m a TH-camr at 26 years old I’ve got Asperger’s and autism but luckily I’ve managed to fought off the nonverbal spectrum and continue to what everyone else does by having a chat
I work with autistic adults. Some at the same point on the spectrum as Gavin and all along at each end of the spectrum. It is a baffling, surprising, challenging, upsetting, amusing, unsettling, heartwarming, smile-making and at times worrying trait of some humans. It can be a blessing and a curse to both be autistic and to work with autistic people. While it would put me out of a job, I dream of a day when these people are no longer trapped. It's difficult to be politcally correct and not offend people. But at times I so wish these individuals could experience (won't say enjoy - because who's to say they don't already enjoy their time on earth) how it is to be neurotypical. While autistic people with limited capabilities may seem mute and invalid to the outside world, I see those who I support jump up to news stories on TV or music, or specific people. These occurances cannot all be random. At times, sadly it can superficially seem that some autistic individuals are an 'alive human body' like a shell with a soul. But then sparks of imagination and pure intelligence and sense of humour, along with affection and understanding shine through piercingly. These individuals should be cherished, cared for and, for Christ's sake, EVERY avenue of neuro-science should be rooted out to see if we can, at the very least help them live their lives and communicate their needs.
Persons with autism are often quite happy in their world. It is ourselves the neuro typical that have to be more understanding /adaptable for making their lives satisfying .
@@elainewhitelock5347 He was so careful to try to make sure no one took his comment the wrong way. He specified that he wasn't insinuating that people with autism aren't joyful. He works with autistic people, so he should know. Some of them are absolutely not happy to be where they are on the spectrum though. Lastly, I think he said that he himself is also autistic, but I might have misinterpreted that sentence.
Oh believe me, autistic people wish you could experience what it was to be autistic...but I don't think the neurotypical mind would be able to handle it. It's like tripping on every substance you can imagine simultaneously, or what that would be like if it only had an upside, as well as being able to encapsulate what hell on earth feels like without it breaking you. But you can't feel it so don't concern yourself with it
Why would they need to experience what it is to be neurotypical? Do you mean you would like them to be able to communicate more easily? Cos those two things don't have to go together. Autism isn't just not being able to communicate, we have a radically a different culture, way of processing and set of ethics. Yes, we have different ethics. Across the board. I'm Australian and in our history white people wanted to emancipate indigenous people from what they perceived as a terrible life and blind to the richness kg their culture. You can imagine how that went. Making people more like you isn't the answer to helping them be happy. Empowering them is. Neurotypical people don't have it together, you just don't see your own faults because you all back each other up and reinforce each other. The neurotypical world is frighteningly unhealthy looking at it from the outside.
wow.... great video. our son Nolan has autism as well and is non verbal at the moment but we don't know if he will be able to develop speech in the future. This is very encouraging to know that even if he didn't learn to speak he can still communicate. Thank you so much for this.
Thank you for the comment. It takes a lot of work to make these videos, knowing it helps other parents or individuals who are on the spectrum, makes it all worth while. -Jason
It's amazing what comes out of his mind truely amazing. Our beautiful boy is 9 and the older he gets the smarter he gets but it's scary also. However I prefer to not think of the things things that scare me. Gavin gives me hope for our future
Thank you to share this story. My Son Noan is autistic teen too and can’t speak and express what he thinks yet. You are so inspiring. God bless you and your family.
Thank you Gavin for doing this video it was awesome, I have and autistic non verbal grandson that is 10 years old and a book explaining his behaviors would help so much! God Bless you
It is amazing, he is a prisoner inside his own mind. He is so intelligent but he can not communicate properly. He must be so frustrated that he knows so much but he cannot verbalise his thoughts and opinions to the outside world.
@@Kiki-yw9kc thank you for your kind words ginger. I was actually seriously bullied and ostracized in school but life is somewhat better in my late 30s.

He is amazing Thank you for sharing. My Granddaughter is non verbal and I love seeing this as progress and to learn from Gavin. I especially like his statement about sitting in silence 💕
What a nice smile Gavin has. It's so wonderful that he's got this communication tool. Gavin's mom sure does love him a lot. And, really, the most important thing for all of us is love.
Much love and respect to the incredible mama, am a mother of 3 years old amazing autistic princess and i receive a lot of positive vibes seeing poeple like Gavin progressing so well ❤️💜
Gavin your a beautiful soul! So inspirational and encouraging! Mom you have raised a fine young man! I wish nothing but the best for you and your beautiful family
I've been working with a non verbal 13 year old. I feel like he is just giving me the run around on our work we've been doing. So this is inspiring to see.
Thanks for sharing! My nephew just turned 9 and has autism and also nonverbal. I am very interested in learning more about this method!! It seems a lot of the issues that Jason has my nephew also does and we are not sure how to get him to sit down long enough or pay attention to learn this method as his stemming tends to take over. He is built a lot like Jason.. thank u Jason for helping us understand a little more about what’s going on in the mind of an autistic child 🤗
I am so glad that Gavin, even though he is non-verbal and has autism understands what we all go through! Though with the real! I am 25 years old, and I have Asperger syndrome or what they would now call autism spectrum disorder, which is a whole load of crap if you ask me to ask me. But he's right, even though I am very verbal and vocal. A lot of the time, I do not feel heard, and it hurts. And has an ipad to communicate what he wants and what he wants , and he wants other people to know and see and believe about autism.. He explains autism in a nutshell. Even though he is completely unverbal, it's completely non-verbal. He is right; too many people sit in silence islands regardless of whether they are verbal or not. Sometimes it's hard for me to get my feelings out as a 25 year old Who is really really verbal sometimes I can tell you in the midst of me crying, and then there are Times where I cannot tell you why I'm crying or I know I'm crying but I can't tell you maybe it's a sensory problem maybe I'm emotionally depleted I don't know in those moments it could be because I have a seizure I don't know. Like on Tuesday, I had what I would call zone out caesars was basically look like I'm intentionally not paying attention to you when you call my name and that is not it at all. I don't always respond because it looks like I'm staring off to space people sometimes call them daydream seizures sometimes Staring spells whatever you want to call it all it but it still makes it hard to communicate. On Tuesday I had to leave work because I had 5 of them! Thank God I did not have the big grandmal seizures that everybody assumes what epilepsy is. It's not the ONLY that that is the only epilepsy there is. And that's not true! And I can do a video later on how to do it or explain it
I have what my psychiatrist describes as “some Asperger’s traits”. I know exactly what you mean about being very verbal but feeling unheard. What I don’t really know is whether I’m actually not _being_ heard, or if it’s just me not picking up on the _responses._ (I know that I suck at picking up signals from others. For example, I’ve had friends tell me “didn’t you notice that person flirting with you?” and I’m like, “I had no idea”.)
It would be awesome if you guys were on the TH-cam channel called (SBSK) special books by special kids. I would like to meet him. I have Autism but I can talk. I have friends that are nonverbal and I can understand them perfectly because I've been around them alot.
It is our pleasure. He is an amazing man and it will be exciting to see all the cool things he accomplishes in the near future. I'll pass the message on to Cindy (Gavin's Mom).
Thank you for commenting. We feel being positive about things is much better than being negative. We would not be as far as we are today had we felt poor poor us.
Cindy, can I ask you what therapies you use? And also I am curious if you stay home with him or if you send him to school? I have a nonverbal daughter who is 10 and I am trying to find the best way to teach her to communicate. Could I email you maybe? I find Gavin's communication amazing. My daughter has a nova chat and still struggles to use it. My email is missJasminesmom@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you!
I hadn't watched the whole thing through when I wrote my first comment. I see now that you homeschooled him. I would still love to hear from you. I love this video and I could use all the advice from other parents and people who are nonverbal for my own child.
God bless you both!! I have a 5 year old non verbal autistic grandson that I love dearly!! This video really encourages me so much! Thank you so much!! 💖
I have verbal high function autism and dyslexia and honestly thought you wrote “five non-verbal grandsons” and thought “how does she even (and the parents) cope?”. I had to reread it again. XD
@@missvee6479 They sound awesome. I’m glad he has help and loving people around him. May he thrive forever and now society understands more, he really should! Hope my comment wasn’t offensive I was laughing at my own mis-reading.

Gavin, you are so right. Autistic people have so much to share. If,only people would stop underestimating us. We feel & know things that neuro typical people don't notice. Are you on social media? I'd love to know when your book comes out. ❤

Wow they are amazing Gavin and his mom Cindy!! So great and lovely to see the positivity, patience and love they share! I’m studying a course which is related to this, they are really inspirational mother and son
Gavin is amazing, but so is his mother. it is clear that she has devoted all her energy to helping her son to have a good life. I just hope that she receives her full reward in this life.
You've probably heard this before, but His voice sounds like he could be a good singer. I recently learned at 67 that I too, am on the spectrum. Thanks for sharing this. I have a lot to learn.
6:41 - Gavin uses Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) to communicate -- this was what I was searching for - some way to communicate with my grandson and have him communicate with his parents and grandparents. Thank you so much for posting this info. There is someone in my small city that practices SOMA RPM. I'm going to reach out to her.
i saw a comment on how working with non verbal people is so bitter sweet and it is so true. i worked with a boy who has just recently got a group home. he is only one year older than me i met him at 18 he was 19 i am now 19 he has since turned 20. as if it wasn’t already bittersweet enough, i was working with someone my age who could not speak. who wasn’t “normal” but i knew in that little head of his was just like me. a completely different life than me. i wish more than anything to hear his voice but most importantly his thoughts. he has had a hard life and has gone into institutions. he’s had outbursts and overall difficult life for not only him but his family. and when you have children like that it is so hard you love them and want the best for them but they are just so different and i give sm credit to his parents for raising him. non verbalism in children can be difficult through out the years raising them. i met him when he had just “calmed down” so i was not there for the hard parts. but i was there for the best. and even seeing him get a home which was a struggle for many years bc of his severity and also many other complications. but jonah (his name) has shown me how sweet he is. he has truly changed my heart and i already had a big heart to begin with. he is empathetic and caring and goofy. i have cried to him several times and every time i have he has never failed to comfort me. even if it wasn’t always the most comforting, sometimes he also could be. he has such a kind heart. i wish most to hear his sense of humor. he knows very few signs in sign language and did not grow up learning how to type or spell. i hope one day he can learn. idk how easy it is for them to after a certain age and you have to have someone to care a lot to put the patience in teaching them. i want to hear him his thoughts his ideas his points of views his memories things he wants to do. i want to hear when he’s sad so i can help him and he isn’t suffering in silence. and i am so sad right now bc idk how much he is actually interested or willing to try in learning how to communicate. everyone is different i’ve never tried with him and i don’t think many have to that extent. he also has ADHD on top of autism. i don’t know i think he just prefers how he communicates now, which can be very vague when it comes to things like emotionally. other than asking for certain things like food or gestures. he is a wonderful boy and i hope heaven is real so i can meet him again differently. he is the first person i am asking to see when i pass. i love him. thank you for putting this out there to the world.
Thanks for sharing this with us. This shows that we shoulddn't be quick to judge others based on their appearance or their disabilities. Gavin is a really smart young man and that I believe that he can and will go further in life with the right support and people around him. It's great to hear about what he thinks and wants to express how he feels. There's a lot of children, teens, and adults are just like Gavin and my only hope is still to see each one of them to be accepted for who they are and not just under the label. Great to see that his mum is so loving and devoting to her son. Let's hope that others will learn to communicate with people like Gavin and yes as she said that we need to be patient with them. :) I wish him all the best for what's to come in his life. Does he have a page on Facebook or some other media that we can follow and support him? If so, what is it?
He is a beautiful soul. His mother is amazing! As a mom of an adult non verbal autistic son so similar to Jason I wish we had more knowledge in the Y2k of “DAN”. These precious people are to me angels on earth. Oh the things they have and will teach us. ❤

I absolutely adore this film, inspirational Gavin to so many and his wonderful empathic mother, thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing your story, Gavin. You give me a lot of hope for my 6yo grandson. I hope to find your books someday.
Both mom and Gavin are amazing. More power to you guys and I hope Gavin reaches his full potential!
@@elainewhitelock5347 well said
@@elainewhitelock5347 He was so careful to try to make sure no one took his comment the wrong way.
-Jason
Never give up on Nolan, he will come far!!!!!
We need more people like Gavin in this world. God bless you, Sir. I will be on the lookout for your bookS! 😊
this made me so emotional its so beautiful and inspiring
❤️
Thank you Gavin for doing this video it was awesome, I have and autistic non verbal grandson that is 10 years old and a book explaining his behaviors would help so much! God Bless you
It is amazing, he is a prisoner inside his own mind. He is so intelligent but he can not communicate properly. He must be so frustrated that he knows so much but he cannot verbalise his thoughts and opinions to the outside world.
I’m a prisoner in my body also with high functioning autism and Asperger’s but I’m able to communicate

I've been working with a non verbal 13 year old. I feel like he is just giving me the run around on our work we've been doing. So this is inspiring to see.
Awesome lady. That blew me away when Gavin was talking on the tablet. Hope he has a successful writing career.
The human brain and how is works is probably the most interesting thing in the world.
I’m late to this video, but I am so impressed and inspired! Good for Gavin and Cindy! 💜
Good Job Gavin! You have accomplished your childhood dreams!
It would be awesome if you guys were on the TH-cam channel called (SBSK) special books by special kids. I would like to meet him. I have Autism but I can talk. I have friends that are nonverbal and I can understand them perfectly because I've been around them alot.
LOVE SBSK! And would love to see Gavin on there as well.
I was thinking that as soon as the video started! Totally something SBSK would love! They interviewed Abbie from Fathering Autism which was awesome!
That would be really awesome.
God bless you Gavin, and God has blessed your sweet Mother,by giving her a fantastic son!
Thank you so much. I'll pass this on to Gavin's mom.

Thank you for sharing your story Gavin. Mom, I love your positive spirit. :)

I hope you are able to provide a link one day to purchase Gavin’s book that would be an amazing read I’d buy it in a second 📖

Hey Gavin it was cool watching ur video you should make more
I love this. ❤ I have a 2 year old nonverbal autistic son
