- Singer, songwriter, and activist Paula Fuga shares the story of her journey from homelessness as a child to becoming a widely respected musical artist. Then, she shares one of the songs that helped her get a "big break".
About the Performer:
Paula Fuga is a musician on a mission. Fuga plays music to honor her culture, to spread the evocative voice of Hawaiians across the world, and to share the meditative and healing powers of her people. Her aim: to bring about positive social change within the Islands and beyond.
Recorded at TEDxMaui 2012, held on January 22, 2012 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

Aloha Paula..love you sistah, I am beginning my music career at 50 yrs. old playing guitar and singing at small gigs, writing my own music. I am coming out of my shell and facing fear overcoming abuse..mahalo for the inspiration you are awesome love you!!

What an inspire speech! I grow up in a very poor family back in Brazil. People who new me used to disbelieve in me, because of my family's financial problems. I remember when I told to a person who new me and my family that I would graduate at university, but I could see in his eyes that he didn't believe a word about what I was saying, because studying at that time was very expensive, but in few years after that conversation I got my degree. I remember when I told to a friend of mine that my dream on that time would be living in USA, and also, I could see in her eyes she didn't believe in me too. I also told to another friend of mine about this same dream and her husband heard my conversation with my her and started laughing in from of me, but after struggling to save money, I went to USA and achieved my dream. When I was in USA I told to another friend of mine I would live in New Zealand, he also didn't believe in me, but now I'm not living in New Zealand, but Australia, that's because in the middle of the way I just decide that I would like to go to Australia instead of New Zealand. I think everybody can achieve their dreams, they just have to believe and don't listening to others who don't believe in them. There are so many people out there who will laugh from your dreams, some of them don't do this on purpose, but they do this because they can't understand that everybody has potential to change their life if they want to. Keep visualizing your dream and do whatever it take to get there. I still have other dreams to achieve, I'm working on it and I know I gonna achieve them as well. Keep it up guys and whatever happen don't give up your dreams. Cheers!

I first heard her sing at UH Manoa when I moved to Oahu in 2006 and was blown away by her. She is so real and soulful. and then I saw her again at Doris Duke around 2013 and I think she is so amazing and authentic and needs to cut more of her albums and have a Paula Fuga world tour
