Eugene Hennie describes himself as an ambitious, norm challenging, knowledge seeking, young professional. Born in New York City, he grew up in a fast paced environment. After graduating from Florida State University with a degree in business management, he moved to Atlanta to pursue a career in telecom. Not long after, he realized that his job was not giving him the adventure and excitement that he wanted from life. He went on a soul searching trip in South America before ending up working as a product launch strategist at Mindvalley in Kuala Lumpur. He now runs Anti Wantrepreneur an online platform and podcast for aspiring and season entrepreneurs.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Thanks for the Video! Sorry for butting in, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Chiveard Discovering Potential Framework (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a good one off guide for finding your true calling and achieving success minus the headache. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin after many years got astronomical success with it.

I think that is one of the most important things about TH-cam. It allows other small channels to grow and connect with other people, relate to them, and hopefully grow that channel for a good cause!
This was an awesome speech, I'm 15 and trying to think about how I will be able to afford my passion which is cars and I love computers as well and this made me realize I need to not worry about affording and start worrying about living life to the fullest and all the wealth in the world would not matter if I was not doing what I love as a career.

I see myself there a few months ago, I knew I was not going to work 8 hours a day just to be able to afford some things that at the end might not even matther that much. Than I met a guy that introduced me to a totally new way of living, the way I will always be thankful him for. And aswell, most of my near-circle is joining me in the adventure and it's all so full of experiences of allkind. And I'm now focused on achieving financial freedom aswell as making myself the best possible me I can be. If anyone wishes, I'm here to change your world! :) Love, Peace, Unity

Thought this was a good video. When you know yourself then you know that you have something that you want to give to others you have found your passion. My passion was to help Others less fortunate than myself. I have now been a Volunteer for 29 years and given my life to others who needed it. The word your looking for is, in fact LOVE. Money is NOT always the answer. We ALL have something to give. We are not ALL money orientated. Money does not always bring HAPPINESS !! I am happy to have been able to give people MY TIME for free and finding MY Passion was helping others for Love not greed.
I think one of the most important things to do is to open up your mind about all the possibilities that life has to offer. And for that you have to break out of your comfort zone.
After school i decided to go abroad for a year,to leave everything and everybody behind for that time
I was scared as hell.
It turned out to be the greatest time of my life, I´ve met so many incredible people, saw the greatest places I could imagine and most importantly learned who I am and what I want to do with my life.
Never ever would I´ve learned that at home.
Leaving your comfort zone is what makes you grow.
I think this talk should be called "Look how lucky I was"
He clearly stated that he got to where he is now because his girlfriend sent him an email, and some buddies of his hooked him up. If it wasn't for that stroke of luck, he wouldn't be giving the ted talk, he'd still be having a miserable life working at the place he doesn't want to work in.
I want to hear a story from a person who had hardships and worked his way up from the very bottom, not some guy who got lucky enough to get into a job some people can't even dream of having then quiting it AND getting even luckier, to get a job that he loves.
I believe that people who get tagged as ''lucky'' always create their luck in one way or another. His friend could have asked him to come along and he could have said no, can't, I have to get back to work on monday. Instead he saw the opportunity and said yes to the adventure, to the unknown that so many people who complain about their life situations still keep choosing the security of their routine over. He changed his life when he said yes to the opportunity.
If you think about it, even people who win the lottery had to go out and buy that ticket that day.
I don't believe in sheer luck. I believe in people who decide one day that they want something better for themselves AND actually go after it head on. People get presented with opportunities every day, but most of them make excuses for why they can't seize them. What if I'm not good enough? Or what if it's not what I thought it would be? Yeah that would be nice, but the timing's not right.. Oh, but you know, my current situation really isn't so bad.. Oh but I can't go on that trip with you, I'm gonna miss my boyfriend/bff/aunt Laura too much.. Oh but I can't ask Sally out, what if I get rejected and humiliated?.. and so on and so on.
We live in societies today where we (and when I say ''we'' I'm actually exclusing myself) have let the fear of loosing and failing fuel our decisions more than the desire to strive and succeed. We're like addicts. Of course we KNOW that what we're doing isn't working and that we're unhappy, but it often seems to us that what we need to do to get to where we want to be is impossible, so we do nothing and keep wining. But like Nelson Mandela said, ''It always seems impossible until it's done.'' And in my experience I would say that this is so true. Once you set your mind to something, that you commit to something, solutions start appearing, opportunities start presenting themselves.. and we can live our lives however we choose to.
Lucky people are just people who have the courage to seize their chance when it comes by. What all of them had to be one day to turn their lives around, are ''leap-of-faith-ers''.

Eugene...inspiring to those who have not yet been around the block. Me, I've been around the block too many times and one factor that you neglect to mention is money. You can (and I have had many) have dreams and aspirations, but without money, you are back at square one....dreaming. I have many dreams but no money..so no matter how awesome I am...I only have my dreams.
Well what exactly are your dreams? There's always a way for a starting point....
My dream is to fly a paramotor every day, now that I'm retired I have the time but don't have the money to purchase the required equipment.
Rob Roy Looks like you've already found your starting point. You have time, you need money. Stop calling it a dream and start calling it a plan. If you wait for the last half of your plan to make sense then you will never start the first half. It sounds horribly cliche but you would be surprised how unexpectedly and quickly plans can come together once you've begun actually moving them forward. Think of a plan to get 1/10th of the money necessary no matter how long it appears it will take, and start towards that.

Just focus on what you want and figure out a way of how to do it, but don't limit yourself with preconceived notion how can you achieve your dream

I approve this message. Unfortunately, its hard to truly understand the message in this video if the person watching is not being honest with himself. People are to self conscious and insecure.

I actually like the fact that you use your love of video games etc. in your speech, case and point, using Elder Scrolls as a reference, it connects to younger people.

Basically if you take what you are passionate about, and dedicate yourself to it, the world will find a way to reward you
I like this presentation especially because of the fact that Eugene Hennie has come a long way and has walked the walk and talked the talk. I've viewed a few TED talks on similar topics, but they're spoken by people who began privileged and it carried through; Eugene does not seem to be one of those people.
His advice is nothing radical, but it doesn't need to be. If there's one common trait in the TED talks I've seen on subjects surrounding success or happiness, it's keeping it simple.
Now, not everybody can do what he did. But I think his point is to head in the right direction, place the first foot forward on a solid piece of ice and soon you will find a way to make it across the lake.

Maybe it is hard! It is your life, it is your happiness! Nobody will find it for u. Nowadays it is sad to work 40-50 years in a branch where u don't belong to. If u want to live ur life, spend time to get to know urself! This is a must do.

Eugene Hennie. well said, just what I needed. in the process of transitioning myself. feeling like I've been in one spot for years just trying without a progress but everyone around just keep saying keep trying you are good at this. the truth is we all were born with potentials and purpose! until you start exercising those potentials and purpose then can true happiness swim in. and this is already within us we just have to sharpen and perfect it. discovering yourself in life is something our society do not press on but that's the true key to success! keep the inspiration alive bro!

Thank you, Eugene! I have listened to a lot of speakers but your speech grabbed me. I am a patented inventor. My product is near production but it has taken nine years instead of the 1 1/2 years my investors projected. In the meantime I have just been biding time saying to myself, "When I make the money, I'll start my business,
produce my other inventions, etc., etc." After hearing your speech I am more motivated to get it done now and not wait one day more to start my other endeavors. Thank you!!

True but making money is not as complicated as a typical person thinks. Take bitcoin for instance. With just a little bit of foresight and risk, you could easily afford the opportunity to travel
One doesn't need to. Regular self reflective sessions are helpful. Company of some people who are reflective helps too.
Some changes in lifestyle which make it less hectic and give sufficient time to help one know what he/she cares about, and contribute to that cause helps too.
That's the problem with a lot of people. When we listen to someone success story we exactly want things happen to us like they've happened to that guy but what we need to understand is everyone have their own path and their own stories to tell. Your may be more awesome one if you stop comparing yourself to others and just remember this that your success story will be unique one which path may not go through kula lampur.

Some travel working on liners....some become air hostesses....
I get passion from just BEING in an airport without even leaving.
It is better to progress by not feeling envy of others.

what he's trying to convey is to try out different things even if it feels like it will give you negative feedbacks from others,to really try out the things that you love and surround yourself with like minded people with positive outlook on life.
I've wondered about my passion and couldn't seem to find it. I found that I have an interest in Graphic Design. I think that I don't have the creativity for it, or just the inability to draw. A set back for me but this speech told me that I have to push forward with my passion no matter what gets in my way that I will figure out how to solve the solution to my set back. Thank you Eugene.

i want to hear testimonies form people who HAVEN'T made it and did everything to the best of their ability, followed rules, never got a speeding ticket, never did drugs etc., earned a Bachelors of Science in Psychology (paid for it, I am willing to bet this guy didn't pay a dime for college).. He left a huge part out of this speech , fortune . some people are just less fortunate. Little Johnny from the slums is just as awesome even if he nor his parents know or see the importance of education for reasons that could go one for ever. you sir are not awesome you are fortunate and that fortune luckily led you to where you. and that is a wonderful thing. motivate people by telling them HOW to become fortunate enough to have an opportunity because many do not.

enjoyed your speach Eugene Hennie . my ambitions seem pretty similar to yours. travel the world, do amazing things, meet amazing people and inspire others. in my 21 years so far i'v went through several different passions that never fully leave me, i just move on to discover a new one. right now it's obviously personal fitness. the hard part is finding that one passion that was meant for you. the one that carries you all the way.

Eugene it all comes down to mastery hardwork and dedication prayers and beliefs sticking to your craft and wokin at it not giving up even though your minds says no i cant do it and shifing and yes i can and will its not giving up nothing is impossible. It is a great one off product for finding your true calling and achieving success without the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my BF finally got amazing results with it.
I didn't find this video inspiring in the least bit! It's full of clichés and things I've been hearing my whole life! The speaker seems like an exceptional guy, very successful and all... but he's just not relatable. The impression I had is that he's been an over-achiever for all his life, even though he was born in a poor neighbourhood he never had any trouble achieving his goals... then when things got rough (rough despite the fact it was a dream job), something else would just come straight down from the heavens and present itself as an even better and more interesting opportunity! I bet it's easy for him to be saying all those clichés about how to find one's inner awesomeness, when he ~apparently~ has got everything he wanted. This talk just made me feel worse about my own life, really!
If you've be hearing the same things your whole life then doesn't that tell you that there's a little bit of truth to it?
Just because you hear something often doesn't mean it's cliché, perhaps what these people are saying has an element of truth.
And why does it make you feel bad about your own life? He's talking about his own life and his own experiences yet that makes you feel bad? Take a second and really think about what you said there. If it made you feel worse about your own life then there's some aspects of yourself that need to be resolved first before you can make the first step towards finding your passion. The two fundamental things that needs to be addressed first are "knowing yourself" and then "embracing yourself". Only then can you really make the difference you want in your life. And if there are things you don't like when you get to know yourself then you can work on changing them gradually. It could be a long process but it's definitely worth it and you'll live a much more content and happier life. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain in taking time to really get to know yourself.
Thanks for the reply. It's true what you said... there IS an element of truth to what he said, but it's obviously not been working for me... I guess that's why it made me feel bad. To be quite honest I've watched so many motivational videos recently I barely remember this one, so I'm sorry I can't discuss further on why it made me feel bad. But I have been trying to "know myself" and hopefully it will get me somewhere someday. Thanks again. Cheers!

An inspiring speech. I think that this young man has really hit upon some age-old, timeless success truths. You have to be gutsy. Watch again, and take note of his steps for attainment. I believe that if you want a life like that, you have to become obsessed, and give it your all. And-you cannot EVER give up. I am grateful for this video.

It isn't really. I mean, the saying isn't calling the making of impossible possible an impossibility, it's changing the impossibility into a possibility, which is possible.
If it's impossible then it cannot be done. If the supposedly impossible is done, then was it really ever impossible to begin with since it could have been done all along? You see what I'm saying? That's pretty much a paradox lol.

Hi Eugene, congratulations on your success. I found it very interesting that right near the start of your speech you mentioned drawing and that when you're young, no one tells you your drawings suck. REALLY?! Actually, I think you meant no one told YOU your drawing sucked! I was told on a regular basis that my work sucked. I had my art (& all creative endeavours) belittled & criticised constantly from childhood drawings thru to years after I left Art college. I'm not saying this in a 'woe is me' context but I'm thinking I can't be the only one. Not all people are encouraged & I wonder how this initial encouragement or discouragement impacts us throughout life ? (By the way I'm an Artist. My avatar is one of my own paintings)

i always hear people say to find what you're good at and improve, but i dont really know what im good at.
Everybody has something that they're good at, or something they're moderate at, but can become good at. Even if it is something you don't do on purpose. Look at a lot of comedians for example, they often make people laugh without themselves noticing it, it's just who they are! You have to recognize that and turn it into a craft.
You have to think hard and observe yourself in your daily life and then you'll surely discover things that you're good at. Or what do you like? Maybe you like to observe people? Or help people? And then somehow find a way to make a living out of it...
Do you wanna find out what you are good at (destiny):
1) What's the first thing you always want to do whenever you feel HAPPY?
2) Can you do that thing all day without any salary/wages?
3) Is it possible to spend your last penny in order to perform that activity?
4) Can you do that stuff ALONE/without a company and not get bored?
5) Is there anything in your life that can make you look into your favorite meal and say "Ohh, this food is delicious BUT I've got a MORE IMPORTANT thing to do?
The list goes on, but it starts with these five ....

Glad you consider me a motivational speaker but that was my second time speaking :-)
you could be broken? or maybe you need the opposite of a motivational speaker to inspire you. or maybe just try harder to reflect a positive mental attitude onto your ambitions and dreams and set that into motion, or maybe its because we hear the same story from all these success stories over and over and its getting to feel a little cliché? but frankly i'm convinced otherwise :D
Eugene Hennie I very much enjoyed the speech, Its refreshing to hear someone who measures success as happiness as oppose to the common view of money, Flash cars and women (don't get me wrong I'd like a Ferrari and a Beautiful women on my arm as much as the next guy).

Thats why I chose a major that would pay me to travel and see awesome places. If you want to travel a lot and make big money you should do Petroleum Engineering. 4 years of torture is worth it I bargain.

WHat if i had a passion and i lost it because i didnt do it for a while? And i tried getting it back but i dont have the same feelings for it? WHat do i do?
I actually went through this with a couple of things that at one time I thought was going to be the last job I would ever have. At one time it was Photography, then it was making music, then DJ'ing, then making movies, then it was developing apps and it seemed to run in cycles. I learned that the reason I stopped doing it was because someone or something made that hobby not fun any more. That usually happens when you put a lot of effort and time into something thinking that your going to get a big positive response from friends and other people. I was expecting the world to love what I was doing and when I didn't get the response I was hoping for, it kinda squashed those dreams and I moved on to something else.
The trick is that somewhere inside you, there is still a passion but the REASON why you decided to quit is what's keeping you from pursuing it again. Go back and find out what it was that you think went wrong and use that to fix it. Ask the people around you for their honest opinion about what it was you were trying to do, and why it didn't knock their socks off. Use that information to revisit what ever it was that you were doing and fix it! This is called the grind. If you ask any self made millionaire they will tell you that they failed miserably time after time after time until one day it finally made a break through.
1. Keep the negative people out of your life and if that's not possible, don't tell them what you are doing until you have already finished it.
2. Never give up
3. Find like minded people to be around, they will be your motivation to press on.
4. There is no traffic on the extra mile. (If there is anything you take away from this remember that!)
I think you're right. Everytime i put lots of effort into something i stop doing it :( I always wondered why. Does this mean to not over do it? BTW I lost my passion because the gym i use to go to practice sports closed down for 2 1/2 months. Thats how i lost my passion. I didn't do it for a while. I also got a millionare friend teacher. His my succes seminar teacher and he is very advise full. He has thought me how to program outside of class and everything. Very helpfull

NanoPixel .Studio Ok I'm saying that everyone will just follow what they want to believe without a care of the homeless guy left on the street, and ya I don't think that be very smart move to put all your effort into homelessness. Even though I got ideas. And about +Greg Gauthier at one point, I gave up a career I loved, in one instant, I got a call from one of the best Engineering firms to come in for interview, but said no. This was cause I had a job that paid minimum wage, like plenty jobs, and I didn’t feel like I should move into it, yet. It was from there a lot of stuff that happened after, since life isn’t perfect. Aside from all the jobs, some positions related to my field, I also invested in a very expensive seminar that I thought could change the world, as in the state right now. As with this seminar, I don’t know whats right, a belief in God or in the universe. I myself am a Christian believer
Thanks for sharing this. I agree with "knowing what you want" and "knowing yourself" and "work your a** off". I am starting to follow my passion and work towards that. I don't know where it will take me, but I love the process. It takes courage, discipline and passion.

I even forgot how I ended up here due to the boredom of hearing about his life story. I paused the video, blinked a couple of times, shook my head to snap out of it and wrote this comment before returning back to my "discover passion" search results
Sorry I must correct you Eugene. When you build an iron sword in an ES game you not only will fail/die a lot, but you can't conquer the 'world', you can conquer Tamriel :) Inspirational, but I don't like much in terms of 'jobs', I like astrophysics but it proves to be super hard, I hate my friends cos they are all negative and well 'assholes' except for one out of 77, I do love Starcraft 2 though, I considered trying for some tournaments but not only is it hard for me vs the professional players but also to make a living out of it looks to be harder than making a living off TH-cam. I then thought of STARCRAFT TH-cam SERIES! And I thought, "What a great idea!" But that proves as hard as the tournaments because with the level of quality of other starcraft commentators there is nearly no chance for me to grow bigger with my current level of tech. People on youtube expect, BIG, BOLD, FUNNY, NEW, AND 1080p. I can't do ALL of these only, perhaps, funny and new. (FUNNY commentary or tactics, NEW build orders that haven't been used before or at least not on a big scale.). I am now (as a teenager) enjoying 3 things, e-sports, astrophysics or astronomy, and building my home version of skynet. Why can't the world turn into a new kind of labyrinth? A labyrinth where every path is labelled clearly for you to know where you're going? And the path you take will make your life happy and not just one big hope. "Hope is the first step on a road to disappointment." Any one that played the first Dawn of War game by the deceased THQ will know what I'm talking about. But this actually proved to be true in my case. Every time I hope for something I get a big fat nothing or in another word 'disappointment' and that's every single time. Now hope seems to be coded into our lives. You cannot get rid of hope unless you really think about what you're hoping about and try and suppress it until you focus on something else. I got the hope for a great well-paid career burned on a CD-R inside my head and I can't overwrite it cos it's writeable ONLY. I really wish I could succeed with the things I love a bit easier, perhaps just so I don't have to compete with anyone for views or subscribers because frankly I hate any kind of fighting. I prefer sharing, sharing life stories with people that are nice enough to read a whole comment like this and not vote it down, unless they really hate my views of life; sharing life experiences, to amuse or help others that need it, or, help people that really need help with a problem they cannot solve with one 'brain power' (i like to refer to horse power in this way.) like people on uk.answers.yahoo.com , well some, because some are really quite bad and ask questions like: "My dog farted in my cereal, should I still eat it?"

Stop saying axe, and congratulations on getting the opportunities that most people will never get. Congratulations on being able to finish school and enroll into a good job where you could make that shitload of money to travel. Not everybody can.
It's like those stupid quotes you see on tumblr "go out, travel, see the world!" but if traveling was free, you'd never see me again!
And they say money can't buy you happiness.. well it can buy opportunities which can lead you to your true passion which can ultimately make you happy.. Only rich people will say money can't make you happy, it's like they feel sorry for poor people so they will just lie about it. It's like meeting your best friends idol, but having to lie about the experience (how fucking awesome it was) because you don't want to make him jealous or sad that he missed out.
Mr. Hennie, honestly though. How does one average joe experience happiness, how does he get opportunities like that. Loads of people live in slums, and only a handful are fortunate enough, or talented enough to excel in what they do and like.
Stop selling us false dreams.

In my opinion this is all very "cheap" philosophy and completely western thinking about life. He spend most the talk saying "work, work, work, work, work", life has nothing to do with work, I don't want to be old and think what have I been doing all my life and realise I've been just working. Yeah he said something like that at the beginning and yes he talked about taking risks and being enterpreneur but again, life is not about making money in the best creative and passionate way, that's just marketing b*llshit.

Angel Ordax when you are working on your passion you dont feel like you are working, in the begining you might, but as you go and get better at it ,"work" becomes play, because now you are so good at it. And in the end of your life you will not say "all my life i have been working", you will say "look at all these things i achieved, look at all the success i had with my goals" your passion makes you feel alive, not like you are wasting your time.
I agree with you this guy only ran away from responsibility..... sure you can back pack your way around the world and be happy being poor...... money doesn't buy happiness is a saying from people who do not know where to shop....... but money is easy to get..... money is laying around all over the place for someone to pick up......

+Angel Ordax As an opponent of the idea of "life is work, deal with it," I'm with you, but I didn't get that from what he was saying. He had one or two small segments about working hard at something, and that really had to do with putting effort in. You get better at something, like drawing, by doing it, by practicing it. If you don't do it, you never get better.
That said, I kind of agree that its "cheap" philosophy in that its all very generic, but to be fair, he did say that when he was invited to be a speaker that he didn't know what he was going to talk about. He was really just sharing his experiences and how he approaches things.
I like the way he delivered it. Yea maybe a little generic or whatever but it definitely reaches through. Love love Ted talks its diversity, opinions and messages!

I love this! I'm in a stage where I'm basically all around craving to fit in with my peers and in society, trying to find my own identity. I've even noticed that I'm always trying to please other people. It's normal right? I mean we all have that little tendency to do so. I sometimes forgot to embrace myself and the worth that God has given me. Thanks for the speech, it's been a wake up call for my senses. Hope to connect and be inspired with you more, Eugene!

How do you want to contribute back to society in a way that will productively help every week, while you're still enjoying what you're doing.

Very True Serafeim, That's why I we ALL should share our stories with each other. When you find someone you can relate to, you get empowered to make a change in yourself.
