Mortal Kombat seems plays fast and loose with a LOT of its use of Asian culture in it's games. Especially with Sub Zero's Lin Kuei clan and Scorpions Shirai-ryu clan. But after doing some cultural digging, it may not be as fiction as we thought!

In regards to Scorpion's colors: I give the MK ninja a lot of leeway because they are representing their clans in a tournament. They aren't actually in need of practicing stealth because, well, they are fighting in an arena where everybody knows who everybody else is. So, why not wear a costume in honor of their clan? That's how I view it. I think 8 is high but maybe it's deserved.

That could be the case. If you consider Takeda’s mostly stealth black outfit, it could be that Hanzo mostly wear them as a sign of authority amongst his Clansmen.
That doesn’t work, unfortunately. Scorpion died wearing the caution yellow outfit on a mission to steal an item for Quan Chi, not in the Tournament.
Manek Iridius It used to be. I don’t know if it still is. It was the first game with Quan Chi and Shinnok in it, and they’re still around. And Scorpion already being dead and Sub-zero being hired by Shang Tsing are still cannon.

I tought the yellow was also because he is a scorpion and yellow in nature means poison or venom. My friends would say the spear must have some kind of poison that leaves the enemy stunned when he stings and we have enough time for an uppercut or start a combo
The reason given in the actual lore of Mortal Kombat was that it was meant to mock the Lin Kuei whose uniforms Scorpion imitated. Straight out of the MK1 instruction manual.
All I can add is that since his whole thing is fire, and fire isn't exactly subtle, a color like yellow that's similar to fire would throw off his opponents to hide actions such as his teleportation (kinda like a smoke bomb or a flash grenade), or a long, easily telegraphed action like a roundhouse kick. It's kinda got that spirit of trickery that ninjas love so much

Given how little accurate info there is about the real roles and MOs of kunoichi, and since accurate ones are rare in vidya(for reasons you yourself explained in the senran kagura video), I was thinking, would a video on Mata Hari make sense as a "close enough" comparison?
I know this series is about videogame and anime characters, buuuut, Fate/Grand Order actually has a videogame iteration of mata hari, whose gameplay is, in fact, pretty damn close to what a irl kunoichi, and even a ninja in general, would really contribute to a fight.
(FGO can be a bit hard to summarize mechanically, so if you look her up and there's any confusion on how her gameplay matches anything ninja-like, I'd gladly translate)

in the fiery pits of hell, is yellow really such a bad color for a ninja who patrols the area? you caved and said a modern ninja may be better off with black in your batman episode, so that is always something to consider.

Bit of head cannon here, but who else thinks the yellow suit isn't just to mock the color of Lin Quei. If you pay attention to the Netherrealm as it's depicted in each game it appears in, what are the dominant colors there? Red, orange, and yellow because of the fires and magma, giving the sky a yellowish color closer to the horizon and an orange color higher up. It'd be easier to hide from, admittedly inevitable, enemies with a yellow outfit than a dark blue one. So technically, he's still a ninja in the Netherrealm.
You aren't wrong, the theory makes sense.
Scorpions (the animals) are symbols of "potential danger" - so having a yellow warning sign built in to his outfit is kind of appropriate in that sense. And is another way of mocking his prey, like shouting: "I'm coming for you! And you will burn!"
I can vouch that when I got stung by a scorpion for the first time it was on my right wrist, and the next day it felt like the palm of my hand was on fire! Cleared me up on my allergies though.
if you look at how the later games portray him, his clothes are meant to blend in with flames. if your main strategy is to cause fire, wouldn't it be more prudent to blend in with the flames? i also noticed him blending into the background of the nether realm.
if you look closely, his mask has elements of being a gas mask.
Ok but how ninja is Spider-Man? I may be talking specifically about Peter Parker specifically, but a lot of this applies to other versions. Sure he’s a well known public icon and loud as hell, but he’s no stranger to stealth, making darker suits (albeit black instead of dark blue, but in a modern setting, especially a city, black makes more sense since the sky is black due to light pollution and modern buildings are often very dark as well), is self-made and is very technologically advanced (going back to his suits, some have been outfitted with invisibility features as well) in pretty much all iterations like real ninja. Speaking of stealth, if we look at other Spider-People, Miles Morales even has a camouflage ability naturally in his repertoire of abilities. He even has his own personalized martial art like how ninja were self-taught when they first came about. His webbing is very reminiscent of how ninja used rope and chain to disorient, disarm and bind enemies. In the PS4 Spider-Man game, he even uses webs to distract enemies to make stealth takedowns easier. His ability to climb walls and again his use of webs are both reminiscent of how ninja used to travel high up in trees and on buildings. His spider-sense is very similar to the ninja practice you mentioned in the Greninja video where they had to dodge an attack from behind while sitting. And back to him being loud and prominent. As for him being loud and talkative, that serves 2 purposes; to distract and frustrate opponents and likely to help calm his own nerves, similar to how ninja used hand signs to calm themselves. And as for him being prominent in the public eye, that’s only a result of him doing what ninja often did; serve and protect. While not specifically protecting political figures like real life ninja, Spider-Man has made it his duty to serve the public. He does what he can to hide his face and identity to the best of his ability, though he does slip up. As for technology, Spider-Man honestly has way too many weapons and gadgets for me to name, from mines, to bombs to specialized web fluid for specific enemies, tracking devises, drones, the cryo-cubes and more. Even his own suit is constantly getting upgrades or variations with different characteristics in mind, including armor, utility belts and constant additional computer based improvements and none of these ever hamper his strength and agility

The Lin Kuei didn't all wear blue. Only Sub Zero did. Other members wore different colours. Smoke was grey. Sektor and his father, the Grand Master, wore red. Cyrax wore yellow. Even when the Lin Kuei started turning their members into cyborgs they still retained their unique colours. It wasn't until the clan was destroyed and reformed by the younger Sub Zero that they all started wearing light blue.
Retcon, and even today they keep forgetting in the big picture they even made said retcon, references it barely, forgets again. From Bi-Han, Kuai-Liang and their grand father who was the first Sub-Zero (Kuai-Liang was Tundra at first) to Frost and references to the Lin Kuet all being cryomancers hailing from Outworld... js.
Shujinko back in deception met the Lin Kuei back when Bi Han and Kuai Liang's grandfather was Sub Zero and the Lin Kuei were using blue

ACTUALLY.... Since there's NO HIDING on the Mortal Kombat, I think the yellow attire DO help him to steer off possible pursuers or someone trying to investigate and find out more about his clan. And of course, there's the throw off side effect, they wouldn't expect him to hide well with yellow, but what if, he simply take it off? B) The first armor was merely a yellow towel over his black suit.

@@ryanvidot275 Ah you mean Murasaki? The "I have ACTUAL ninja techniques but I screw them up" ninja. His Bunshin jutsu would be the EXACT kind of thing a real ninja would use since he's part of a set of five identical brothers so they can fool a person into thinking there is more than one of "Murasaki" at any time..his Suiton was spot on..except it was the only bamboo rod in the very small pond..his Tatamigaeshi was far more realistic than others I've seen since he actually held them up manually instead of using his strength to send them flying into the air ala Kenshin or Baiken...his camo cloak would have worked if he hadn't had the American Flag side showing (that is the side shown in the Japanese version too, it wasn't changed for the US translation of the manga.) He would actually make a fairly good ninja..he and his brothers, would they actually hide their faces. They all have swords..Murasaki the oldest is the one we see the most of, Kon the second oldest has a preference for kunai, Cha the third oldest uses a revolver..which we know a ninja would use if given half a chance, Aka the fourth oldest uses a blow pipe and darts, and Nao the youngest uses a kusarigama. All of them would have the same ninja training and similar tools like shuriken, smoke bombs, camouflage cloaks and the like..if they didn't screw up their techniques they would all be VERY good historical ninja especially given their purple shozoku and it's better suitability for stealth versus the classic black shozoku (as GG says "Real ninja wear blue").

I don't really have much to add in regards to him being a shinobi - more relating to other aspects of his character and design.
Scorpions as spirit animals / totems are symbols of "potential" danger; change through death and rebirth; protection; and since they only attack for food or protection, when they do kill it is considered "divine judgement". So consider the following: The original Sub-Zero (Bi Han) was considered a bad guy. Scorpion may have killed him out of revenge, but SZ kinda had it coming anyway. In Mortal Kombat's original timeline Scorpion spared and protected the younger Sub-Zero (Kuai Liang), who went on to become a hero; Scorpion kills Quan Chi who has been pulling a lot of strings behind the scenes leading to most of the conflict throughout the series; Scorpion was also championed by the Elder Gods to stop Onaga and the One Being from bestroying the universe.
I always saw Scorpion's yellow outfit more of a ceremonial kind of thing. Not necessarily something that would be actively worn on stealth missions during his life. While it acts as a way for the shirai-ryu to mock the Lin Kuei, it also relates to "potential danger". As a spirit of vengeance he's basically taughting those he's hunting.
Despite dead or divine characters in the series having white eyes.... I think it suits Scorpion most. It's like a metaphor for his "blind rage". Similarly with his fire attacks being a "burning rage". He does have a blind hatred towards Bi Han that's as intense as the fiery depths of hell.
It's also kindof interesting that later in the series, other revanats have red or white eyes, but Scorpions are yellow

SCORPION!!! YEEEEEES!!! FINALLY!!! And you're damn right he's good.
Also, if you think about it, it makes sense that he's overly combative and visible. As an aragami, he doesn't exactly have any reason to fear capture or death, nor does he have any clan to help by utilizing typical ninja techniques for stealth, spying, escape, etc. But now that he's, unfortunately, been brought back as a living being, he's now gained a reason for re-adopting his old ninja techniques. Maybe in the future we'll see him being a little more ninja-like, but after having been an immortal revenant with literally nothing to lose for so long, he'll probably have some trouble transitioning. Especially when being a revenant offered much more convenient options to forward his end goals.
The human brain prefers shortcuts, so it makes sense that he'd have trouble readjusting to the extremely strict and disciplined way of a shinobi. His brain would, naturally, think: "Why do ninja stuff? It's sooo hard! Just rush in there and burn everything! Man, being an aragami was so much easier..."
That Ryu thing bugs me too GG...I have fits every time I hear it and one of my biggest pet peeves is people mispronouncing Ryu's name when playing Street Fighter..speaking of SF you got a few ninja there to look into too. You got Ibuki, Guy, Vega/Balrog(the 'Spanish Ninja'), and Zeku..who may be a forerunner of the Strider program that birthed another famous Capcom 'ninja' Strider Hiryu given how his transformation into his younger self looks a LOT like Hiryu..I use quotations for Hiryu's ninja status as while he is trained in the ninja arts he's specifically called a mercenary in canon...and you did bring up Hiryu in the episode of this that started it all, when you first talked about Mark of the Ninja..and how his sword Cypher making such an obvious noise is VERY bad for a ninja.

Gaijin Human: 8/10 Shuriken(Originally gonna be 3/10; due to Caution Yellow Armor being too easy to see by enemies)
The Goomba: 6/10 Shuriken
For reminder: Brightly colored armors were more for tournament. Same with normal Shinobi. Those fancy stealth suits were used only on special occasions, as most of them hide pretending to be peasants, staff, monks and artists.

Okay, but on the aggravating note, I MUST EMPHASIZE his name is pronounced RAY-den not RAI-den in this one case. The mortal kombat character is Raiden pronounced RAY-den.
I know im late, but thats Raidens original name in MK1 "Rayden" later in sequel games his name change to "Raiden" but still in same pronounciation, which is why his name pronounce Rey-den not Rai-den

I'd also like to say that on an interesting note, while we say Sub-Zero is a ninja, he once proclaimed that he is in fact NOT a ninja and that he's Lin Kuei. So while we do associate Kuai Liang as a ninja, he proclaims otherwise. That being said, he did proclaims Scorpion a ninja.

Would Sombra be considered a ninja? She is centered around stealth, disrupting the enemy's abilities and health packs, and has a good escape ability you need to plan for in advance. Her playstyle also revolves around picking off isolated or unaware targets since her healthpool is so low.
Did not know about the theory of ninjutsu originating in China, at first that made me somewhat remorseful about my comments on Netflix's Defenders for turning the Hand into an organization that originated in China as opposed to Japan like the comics but then again considering how that story felt put together (with Jessica Jones and Luke Cage having the loosest of reasons to be there) I'm not sure the people making that knew that either so eh
hawkeye in the movies is pretty ninja in the movies
he has a tendency towards ambushes, silent observation, bows duh, deception/distractions, stealth, explosives (especially for distractions), utilizing high ground, multi-use gadgets and weaponry, discreet clothing (for a marvel character) and small concealable weapons like knives batons and aperently collapsable arrows (age of ultron)
whenever he gets to do things his way in the movies:
he guards the tesseract from the shadowy rafters
sabotauges the helecarrier utilizing misdirection, trickery, sneakery, and explosives
spys on thor unseen from a crane
distracts vision with an explosion and then sets a trap to slow him down
misdirects ironman twice in the climactic civil war battle to open him up to other's attacks ("made you look" and ant man arrow)
ambushing quicksilver by breaking the glass floor below him
tricking loki with an explosive arrow in avengers
silently steals a mcguffin in germany, unknown to the avengers, while loki causes a distaction (avengers)

Not really.... Hawkeye barely even does anything in the movies... in the comics however :) In fact he WAS a ninja for a while going by the name Ronin.

Not as in who could beat who but you could talk about who's better, how similar they may or may not be, or if Assassins are the modern day equivalent of Ninjas.

Hanzo Hasashi is actually the ultimate ninja terror weapon because he knows how to hide and all the ninja techniques and on top of hat he can strike fear in his enemies where even if they kill him he can pop up again killing them and it may even be an advantage to sow fear and confusion to let others see him that time to morally destroy his enemies.

ahhh..the cyborg ninja duo..both on the 'bad ninja' side of the intro..with Raiden glitching out like crazy..to be fair his first showing as the cyborg ninja in MGS4 was a bit more stealthy...Revengence was just an excuse to go ham with the whole thing..especially when you consider Gray Fox from the first MGS had active camo to make him stealthy as all hell.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and if you have time), is to examine the Ninja class from Pathfinder's "Ultimate Combat" sourcebook to see if it stacks up. As a bonus, there is also the Ninja class from the Big Eyes Small Mouth RPG as well. (Either the original or D20 variant.)

Speaking of ninjas in MK, you have to bring up Reptile. He focuses more on stealth and information gather rather than fighting. He has the ability to turn invisible and can spit acid in his opponents face to blind them (or just straight up kill them). And his fighting style tends to lean more into hit n' run tactics or zoning his opponents and keeping them away, allowing for more opportunities for a counter attack.

Where is that nowadays?
Yellow is supposed to be the Shirai Ryu mocking the Lin Kuei in that they use the same uniforms but wear yellow. Most likely the yellow is just used in formal situations where they are presenting themselves or representing their clan as opposed to doing any actual operations/missions. So the yellow is more a part of their branding rather than something to be looked at functionally (other than the function of mocking the Lin Kuei).
Am surprised you didn't do Reptile from Mortal Kombat his theme of invisibility, spying, tendency to lose direct conflicts and acid seem more ninja like than all the other colored ninjas. Maybe do a video of him in the future.

His belligerent demeanor and clothing style ARE NOT immediately "That's my ninja.", that is for sure. But considering how Japan often borrowed influences from China and utilized them to better/supplement their own rich culture, social classes, and historical structures, I'm not surprised to find out Scorpion's weapons, fire techniques, and even his name, Hanzo (Iga clan leader title) have at least some relevance to ninjitsu's origins in Chinese espionage techniques. Can't wait for the next one, guys.

How are you going to make a video on how week scorpion fairs as a ninja and never mention his teleport attack?
The attack where he physically jumps away off screen, then appears from the other side of the screen and attacks.
It seems to be influenced by groups of real life ninja of roughly the same height and build showing up dressed in identical outfits. Where one of the many uses of showing up like this was to give the illusion they could do and attack where they teleport just like scorpion does.

I feel Scorpion and the Iga would specialize in the massive distraction tactic, i.e set fire or blow something up to force attention to other areas.

He is a paradoy of Batman but not a good batman. He does know Karate , Jujisitu and wrestling and later learned Ninjistu ,The streets gave him more in depth look of fighting. I say hes too noisy to be a ninja.

I've been waiting for a Which Ninja on Scorpion for a while now, because I never saw him as an authentic ninja, more like a gladiator with ninja inspired moves and costume.
An addition to Scorpion is that the color yellow is not meant to mock the Lin Kuei but rather the clothes he wore after becoming an aragami were meant to mock the Lin Kuei because the color yellow was already one used to associate with his clan before extermination.
Is he ever going to do a Video on Aragami?

Thanks as this might be my new favourite video for the series. Being Chinese I did know ninja was both created and influenced by China while Japan adapted it and made it its own. It common throughout history of the two nations so I'm glad you delved into it and found yet more great info!

hmm...how close to being a ninja is blake? her weapon is a katana, kunai, and gun all in one, she uses a shadow clone which can be combined with elemental abilities, and comes from a very clan-based society, including being involved with an organization that actively spys on and attacks primarily using stealth.

Although I do cosinder Scorpion a ninja in some level Reptile is more ninja like. Sure he's more reptilian looking then the green subzero look from back in the day but he still uses stealth, and some other stuff. maybe you should give reptile a look and see. Japanese contains a lot of borrowed vocabulary from Chinese. Chinese has a lot of homophones, so Japanese inherits that trait as well. Many Japanese terms with different meanings have similar pronunciations that can only be differentiated by either tone or context.

Good video, goomba, but you spelled "Lin Kuei" wrong. In Mandarin Chinese Pinyin, it's actually "Lin GUI," not "Lin QUI." The "q" sound in Chinese makes an English "ch" sound, while G is the same. "Gui" means "demon" or "ghost" in Chinese. "Qui" is NOT a word.
First of all, i'm so GLAD i finally hear the correct pronounce of Shirai Ryu! Not Shiraraiyu! I don't know if my hearing is a mess, but i tend to hear western people saying "Shira raiyu"(Yes, they erasing the "i" from "Shirai", from what i hear.....) instead of "Shirai riu"...
Okay enough with the pronoun, i'm not a MK Fan, and rarely play this game too, but i think he's a ninja alright as someone who never see Hanzou Hasashi fight before he become an Aragami known as "Scorpion", excluding using Scorpion with Hanzou skin... IT'S ILLEGAL!!!!! XD
As an Aragami, he utilize his fire skill a LOT and also teleport to opponent's behind by using underworld portal just like a Ninja who use Smoke Bomb.
At first, i want to say that he's not a Ninja because he never use any throwing weapons like Shuriken, but i remember that Scorpion using a more reliable tool A. K. A KUNAI WITH CHAIN~~~ EXTRA 500 ATTACK~~~ XD
Not only it can hurt the opponent, but also to pull them. If missed, he can just pull it back without even worry about ran out of Shuriken :3
This may very well be previously commented by others, but if you're looking for more information on the Lin Kui, the pinyin is lin2 guei3, characters 林鬼。 Directly translateable (and maybe Gaijin already mentioned this) as Forest Ghost. Which makes sense. Because of Gakuri no Jutsu and common mispelling of Chinese words, I had guessed it was possibly 林雀, literally Forest Sparrow. This is not the case. It is Forest Ghost.

I've tried researching Aragami on the internet after playing the game but I can't find ANYTHING related in folklore except for Onryō and
another , Goryō who are more of a spirit from high rank or nobility (Aristocrat). Hopefully using info here can help me but if others can direct me to a good source of obscure info please lemme know!
This just makes me wish Tenchu came back all the more or at least a new ninja game where you actually complete an objective with stealth with a hint of frontal combat in 3D open world. That doesn't mean I want a giant ass server with ninja's running around! YEAH I'M LOOKING AT YOU NARUTO, WARFRAME AND NINJA GAIDEN! I'm sure there's a couple others. But those are the games I played that mentioned Ninja without using stealth. Except maybe Warframe if you tried that hard.
I may have commented about this before, but Gaijin Goombah, you may find the historical tactics, training, and methodology of Ninja in Japan and the training, etc. of modern day SOF units (Navy SEALs, British SAS, Delta Force, and even/especially the CIA Special Activities Division) to be fascinating!
Wouldn't Scorpion's fire powers make him an even better ninja? Because he can burn the skin and flesh off of his victim, leaving literally just a skeleton.
Plus he can disappear without a trace with his power to teleport.
EDIT: ON TOP OF THAT?! As a revenant, Scorpion's face isn't able to be seen. It's just the flaming skull. So his identity is expertly hidden (as long aa he doesn't say his true name)

Hanzo wears yellow (or gold) as the Spectre scorpion, not to mock the Lin Kuei, but because he’s no longer really a ninja and is more Quan Chi’s personal body guard and warrior, and he keeps wearing it after becoming human again because it’s a reminder of his mistakes made as the Spectre, outside of the Scorpion’s Revenge movie that uses his modern day Hanzo design has his pre Spectre self, Hanzo is usually seen wearing dark colors pre-death, and using what he can find around him as a makeshift weapon to track down the killer of his family and clan (Quan Chi disguised as Sub Zero)
So Hanzo wasn’t always the bright yellow wearing combative warrior he’s usually depicted as, when he’s just Hanzo Hasashi of h the Shirai Ryu clan he’s shown to be a much more resourceful and stealthy man, and even modern day Hanzo in MKX and MK11 is shown sneaking into bases silently and taking out guards without a trace, specifically speaking of his and Kuai Liang’s infiltration of the Tekunin base in MK11.
Since Scorpion is an immortal ninja demon, stealth wouldn’t really be important when you can BREATHE FIRE AND SEND PEOPLE TO HELL!
I'm not a Mortal Kombat fan, myself, though I do know a fair bit about the series, but so you know, Gaijin, about your Chinese pronunciation, first, a "q" in Chinese is pronounced like a "ch," with a slightly different sound on the "u" in "qu" compared to "chu." I unfortunately don't think I have any way to make a video on Chinese pronunciations, though. But also, they don't pronounce any sound between the "u" or "i," so my best way of explaining its pronunciation is that "Lin Qui" would actually be pronounced "Leen Chu-ee," rather than like Mortal Kombat's Lin Kuei.
Your pronunciation of the Sheng Biao is spot-on, though.
