Still though, he could've done with a few other abilities to make him moreso based around stealth and survival. An invisibility ability like Sombra, medicine to heal himself (Which he desperately needs considering how terrible his durability is) and more weapons based on MODERN technology which would make way more sense. Or at least a bow instead of throwing stars. That's why I think Genji's early concept of also having a bow would have been perfect. Hanzo and Genji should've stayed as one character. THAT would make a perfect video game FPS ninja. Along with the abilities I mentioned before.

  • @siliarba

Honestly, i feel like, yes in game Genji is a terrible ninja, but in game Genji, isn't actual genji. Genji in the animations, in the stories, that's actual Genji. If you use that, then you have someone with stealth technology to make him blend in to the shadows, silence his movements, speed up his movements, allows him to climb on surfaces normally not possible to climb on, throw ninja stars with pin point precision for distraction more than combat utility, using the Kodachi as his main weapon, a weapon he's so skilled with he can deflect and destroy incoming projectiles, can vanish in to nothing even when no place to hide is in sight. And with Nin meaning endurance, I don't think there's anyone in the overwatch world with more endurance than Genji, he practically endured death brought upon by his own brother who he looked up on, endured a torment of not knowing what he is any longer, and channeled all of that in becoming better.
I could go on, but I feel I made my point, again genji in game isn't Genji, and I feel if you took Genji from the lore, or treated him as a seperate entity as gameplay is made to fit the gameplay, not the lore, I feel like you'd end up with Genji being rated extremely high in likeness to a ninja, if not the highest rated so far.
PS, love this show, keep it up :) .

But the Genji outside the game still has all the flaws, and they're the easiest ones to fix.

    • @bearandthebull2372
      @bearandthebull2372 5 ปีที่แล้ว +52

@@TheNdoki I'd argue lore/ genji has better workarounds with his flaws.
We see him use lighting and positioning to cover up his white paint job,we know he's significantly faster and more dexterous due to him dodging and parrying scatter shot, and his whole "shitty shurikens" appear to be HIGHLY advanced in comparison to guns(perhaps even the same type of metal that hanzo's arrows are made from).
On top of this he seems to have the ability to control the weight of his body manually,as seen in his short. All around, story genji is a SIGNIFICANTLY better ninja than game genji.

    • @TheNdoki
      @TheNdoki 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

"We see him use lighting and positioning to cover up his white paint job"
Yes, which is all extra, unnecessary work. If I had a flashing neon green car I could hide it as well, but it would still be easier to hide if it was painted a different color.
And on the same note, I'm sure if he really wanted to he could probably throw quarters at his enemies and hurt them as well, but again if he had a better weapon his skills would be used even better. Sure they may be highly advanced, but there's a reason why practically every other character in the game uses a gun of some sort, and the same reason why we don't have people throwing shuriken or using a bow and arrow in the army anymore. Guns are still better.
If Genji was truly trying to be the best assassin he could be, he'd do everything he could to use his abilities to their fullest. Instead he's using inferior weapons and tactics. Just think of how much better he'd be if he were colored properly, and using a gun.
P.S. You can talk up those shuriken all you want, but I saw the video. Doesn't matter how good they are if they're too slow to hit anything and have an incredibly short range.

It was an exceptionally heavy sword, the closes widely known counterpart would be Cloud’s buster sword from Final Fantasy. Genji's primary fire (his shuriken) are literally the ability that does the least amount of damage in his entire toolkit, with one shuriken doing 28 damage. Only after quick succession and all headshots do the numbers really rack up, which is reminiscent of how shuriken would be required to hit the head, neck or chest to deal significant damage to an opponent. Other than his shurikens, literally every other one of his abilities is a blade, be it his deflect, his dash or his ultimate he always uses a blade, and all of them do more than the base damage of the shuriken, Heck even a quick melee attack does more damage, at 30 damage, and it yet again is a blade.
Also, many Genji players utilise high ground to increase likelihood of headshots hitting, as well as being an example of Tanooki Gakure No Jutsu. See renowned players such as ShaDowBurn dominate with Genji. They aren't reliant on their team as much as other heroes are because of their survivability, in deflect deterring the enemy from shooting and swift strike in making a quick getaway.

Woah woah woah. Cut Genji some slack here bud. I saw a few of your points that I think needs a bit of a counter argument, and this is coming from a guy who’s played since launch, started as a Genji main (no longer) and whose friend is now a diehard Genji main.
    Throwing Stars:
Yeah, these are now really great as a primary, but what’s important is how Genji players use them. Genji players use a specific tactic in which they gain close quarters combat with an enemy then use their stars (burst) then their sword (quick melee). Would this not be loosely considered valid? A ninja using throwing stars then going in for a melee attack? Also, you stated yourself that throwing stars were only deadly if you hit an area like the head or throat. That is EXACTLY the Genji play style. In order for a Genji to be useful, they have to hit headshots consistently.
    Play style:
You stated Roadhogs style of play is more akin to that of a ninja. Well the way that you described him (minus the hook) is how a Genji should play! They are a flanking hero, whereas road hog punishes poor positioning, Genji forces poor positioning, killing weaker, more valuable targets like healers or other flankers. Not to mention, he is incredibly mobile! I’m ashamed you didn’t mention his wall climb and double jump! While ninja likely didn’t have a double jump, I’m sure they had tools to scale walls to USE THE VERY PERCHING STYLE YOU PRAISED. In fact, many Genji players use this tactic, hiding in high altitude areas that they can reach due to their incredible mobility.
    Clothing:
Okay, I get that Ninja wear blue. But why do they wear blue? Because they work during the night, specifically so that the night sky and forest would blend in it’s their coloration. But Genji isn’t a forest ninja. The majority of missions he goes on are DAYLIGHT MISSIONS IN URBAN AREAS IN THE FUTURE. Ninja would have to adapt to the new architecture. There are no tall tree to hide in, only large white and chrome buildings. Also, the skins are VERY canon. The younger skins of him are him when he was younger, and other heroes have been shown to wear the skins in game in CANONICAL COMICS. Case in point: Ana’s shrike skin. She wears it in the comics dealing with “current” story. While this is a lesser point, don’t doubt that Genji would know to wear blue/ navy. Also, he didn’t design the suit, mercy did, blame her if anyone.
    “I need healing”:
    Really...
    REALLY?
You’re going to use a meme about poor Genji players as your main argument?! Well then, scout must have the same problems because of the 123 health scout meme. You see how idiotic that is? Allow me to explain the meme, this meme is used to characterize bad Genji players who don’t understand picking battles and utilizing environmental healing. Most Genjis can protect themselves just fine by using their reflect and confusing the enemy with double jumps.
Overall, this just seemed to be an oversimplification of Genji. While i am neither “exposing” you nor calling you stupid, maybe you should have talked to Genji players too so that you could see the similarities in strategy.
Thanks GG, love your content as always!

He wasn't saying Genji was bad ninja specifically because of the meme he was saying he was a bad ninja because he didn't have anyway to help or recover himself such as regenerating shields or some sort of self healing ability. Heck it doesn't even need to be a self healing ability he used Sombra as an example of something similar that could also work for a ninja. Scout isn't a ninja and his personality is someone who tries to get the first hit in and isn't exactly subtle about it. He was just using the meme as a joke/segway to his next point so I wouldn't consider it idiotic.
What Gaijin said about ninja stars is that they are usually used for distraction not directly hurting someone. Now while what you say about Genji players is true it doesn't really invalidate Gaijins point because the stars are still Genjis main source of damage(the dash not only has cool down, but using it recklessly will get you killed while Genji's stars typically safer and still offer a consistent source of damage that can at least keep up with the primary fire of other heroes).
The way you describe poor positioning makes it sound like genji PUNISHES poor position not creating it. He punishes Healers or squishes(and their teammates) for being unaware or in a bad position. While yes he is putting the opponent at a disadvantage he is not "creating" poor positioning he is punishing lack of awareness or already bad positioning. If you are gonna argue that this would intern force the team to change positions, well 1 their next position is not automatically be bad and may be in fact better then the previous positioning as they realize what just happened 2 by that logic roadhog also creates poor positioning by also killing healers, squishes and other players and forcing the team to adapt to what just happened even if he is punishing bad positioning he is forcing them into a worse "position". if anything roadhog would punish poor positioning by that logic.
I kind of agree with your point about ninjas wearing blue you can't blame Gaijin for giving the criticism. Assuming we exclude things like maps because any hero can play on any map so they are for the most part noncanned. The only times we have really seen Genji in action is the Hanzo and Genji short an animation where he hides in the DARK before striking and a clip of the doomfist short during the day. Overall the hanzo short gives us way more information about how Genji operates and his fighting style than anything else we have seen. Now I could be wrong because to be honest I need to catch up on the comics.
The rest of your points about things like mobility I agree with, but to me the reason you do not have more likes is your kind of missing gaijins actual points and focusing on stuff he didn't say or are not important. Also technically not ALL of Genjis young skins are cannon in the same way that not ALL of Genji's modern/normal skin colors and variations are cannon off the top of my head I'm pretty sure there are only three cannon Genji skins. The normal stock one, the blackwatch one and the young one with the green hair.

I feel it unfair on how you mentioned Roadhogs playstyle but not Genji's
Genji often times hides either behind or above the enemy, often giving information to his teammates and then goes in to either disable (by making the enemy use cooldowns, which sombra does) by making them low on hp and panic
If the genji is skilled enough he can often burst the enemy down with combos of his abilities
It takes high skill (just like ninja)
Even Shoddycast did the math and Genji's shuriken can do alot of real life damage (near bullet level)
Genji's wall climb and double jump gives him some of the best mobility in the game and this lets him hide in places only he can (sometimes places even sombra can't get to)
Survivability? Genji takes alot of skill and knowledge to pull off but he can also be very effective. His deflect and dash allows the player to escape bad situations and a like ninja good Genji's would know where all the health packs are and how to play around them or his healers
I just wanted to get this off my chest cause you guys didn't give the boy a fair chance in going through everything about him (including the most important part, his playstyle)
I'm not saying he's amazing but he deserves at least a 7/10
Oh and btw, alot of the alternate skinns are cannon. They even have Bois for some of them like young Genji or Sparrow (the nickname his father gave him)

Ok, I know real Ninja wear blue, but even so... that's because the night sky was blue in feudal era Japan...
if Genji normally ran around in say the billboards and along the windows/walls of skyscrapers, that near concrete white/gray and the neon flipping green accent that could be turned on or off would make "some" amount of sense, cause he'd be able to turn off the lights to blend in to gray/white concrete of the urban landscape and he could use his neon to try and look like part of a light up billboard (and who's to say there isn't any other colors that even the basic skin "could" light up into, we only see one in game because game logic).
Finally, for those who say that not all cities or parts of a city would even have anything that he could blend into... you're absolutely right. But if he's always in the one city in that outfit where it blends the best... that's all he needs it for (and who's to say the basic recolors actually are not canonical, because that "could" be his entire ensemble of outfits for the right job/location, right? Lets be honest here, disguises and camouflage is as much part of a Ninja's tool kit as the actual tools themselves).

    • @zionphoenix001

Exactly what I was thinking! Take a look at the Doomfist animation and notice how Genji kinda camos with urban landscape. Put him in the skyline of Busan at night with his lights on and he's just another graphic right before you get a kodachi up your backside.

That's....actually a good point. Gaijin should consider it in future videos. But still.....Genji is every stereotype people think of a ninja. Don't get me wrong, I like Genji, I think he's the coolest looking character in Overwatch, despite all criticisms.

    • @danielhounshell2526
      @danielhounshell2526 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@turbohawk551 He has multiple means of preservation though, the double jump can make it hard to pin him down, his wall climbing gives him the ability to get better positioning and escape enemies, his reflect gives an opening to get to a better position or find cover while dealing damage, and his dash allows you get out of practically any dangerous situation instantaneously. Not to mention if you're spending the entire match scouring the map for healing packs, you're just a bad Genji player. His sword length is actually typical of a standard katana, definitely not a nodachi, the fact that he mistook it for one is actually kind of hilarious. The problem with Genji is that he wears it on his back. Drawing it from the hip gives you way more range with which to draw your weapon, from the back you're basically just relying on your arm's length, so you can never really draw a blade any longer than that.

Also using MGR Raiden as an example (and no doubt the inspiration for his design)
You can argue the sheath extends and retracts along the back as needed.
    As for the survival aspects,
that comes down to player skill.
I'm not even close to the pro genji players but I rarely need healing and I personally am a Bation main's worst nightmare.
Also I bring up the fact lore wise that Genji is dead in the public eye, murdered by his brother.
The identity of the cyborg ninja is not known to anyone except overwatch the people who gave him the cybernetic.
Sombra might have a cloak ability but her identity is public, with a handle she goes by, her hideout has her fucking name on the front door and she's for hire.
Same for Roadhog, him and Junkrat are wanted anarchists.

Ok so three things one for durability he has deflect and dash for escape the reason why the "i need healing" joke came about was because some people dont know that when you get low you use swift strike to disengage and find a health pack or for your healer to find you, second you forgot to mention his passive, his passive you have wall climb and double jump both mobility abilities that allow either for escape, dodgeing your opponent, or simply going a route that other carecters can't, and finally as you mentioned genji has many cyborg enhancements which gives him a few things but you didn't mention the fact that maybe they enhance his strength? You know to make them fly faster and hit harder? All in all this was an amazing episode i was just wondering why you didn't tame these things into account

  • @haterhater6409

I feel as though some things here against genji are in a manner rather unjust.
Of course the I need healing meme is well in the name a decent amount of a meme. In reality his suitability isn't as lacking as the video makes it appear, between being able to use dash, deflect, double jump and wall climb genji is actually a rather survivable hero in duels. Many would actually consider his movement to be better than sombras as it's less one and done single tp.
Other things of note are that there is actually a number of canonical skins for genji, Bedouin, nomad ,sparrow, young genji, blackwatch and of course the default are all conically confirmed. Many of these infact would be extreamly good at hiding a ninja in they would be used. Some good well suited attire I would like to bring up is the nomad skin and the blackwatch skin. Outside of the red the colours of the blackwatch skin heavily suit the urban and military environments it would be used in meshing well with greys and whites of concrete and metal panneling that would be found in those locations. Next is Bedouin, at first the colour match well to the sandy pale arabic areas it would likely have been used in during genji's search for meaning post overwatch being disbanded.
Another thing which is a solid point towards genji is how well his identity was actually concealed, to the point of outside of overwatch genji's own brother didn't even know of his existence. Aswell as his ever present concealing of his face and facial details e.g. contacts in the blackwatch skin to disguise his exposed eyes.
As for playstyles they really can't be used to judge the character here, though in bringing up road hog you pointed out a ambush, hook and kill tactic which is definitely used commonly. But arguably more common are peel hogs that protect squisy's in the backline and frountline hogs that apply barrier damage (the direction blizzard has been taking the hero with balance patches). This also can apply to genji as you said where he can be played in a very, backline assassin taking out priority targets after infiltrating and observing things such as treats and useful tools. As for primary weapon being shurikens, this is in a way slightly untrue much of genji's kit is heavily based in his short sword (his entire play is based around dash resetting a move performed with the blade.
Granted there is a lot of ranting here, but I though I would add a few things I found cool about genji in terms of ninja authenticity (mainly concepts s I learned though this show)

The dragon sword sheath DOES open up from the side, though the replica and animation doesn't show it (the blade just warps itself, because fine-detailed animation is hard... and expensive). Notice the sheath has a black, plastic or ceramic clasp near the top, with a tapered edge folding up and away from the center. The material means this design was molded and deliberate (as opposed to a leather wrap simply pulled taut), and the shape implies it was designed not to resist pressure from underneath and to slide out of the way (much like a door latch and locking plate are tapered in the direction the door is supposed to close). This gap is small enough not to catch on foliage or interfere with movement, but is large enough to catch the blade and, with a simple twist, flick open easily without looking at it. If it were meant as a simple holder, seal, or carrying clasp, the notch would fold DOWN to *resist* pressure from inside (like a bicycle lock or belt buckle), and be flush with the rest of it to avoid catching on anything.
One might ask how the clasp itself doesn't interfere with or hook on the blade? Logically, the clasp must be flush. If it were magnetic, it would both hold the clasp closed and re-close it automatically when the sword is drawn or replaced (which also explains why we always see it closed; it would only be open a fraction of a second). This kind of technology currently exists in military and police equipment (usually for quickly holstering firearms or baton), as well as high-end camping equipment to automatically re-seal a screen door and block insects. Definitely something a high-tech cyborg would be familiar with.
All of this is visible in the footage from this very video. Doesn't excuse the other silliness, of course, but... I think it's kind of a neat observation and thought exercise.

I think Genji deserves another look. Blizzard has come out starting that the portrayal in the game is only loosely cannon. In the manner that this game is a real videogame in universe. In the world of overwatch the game is how genji is displayed. But if you look at the comics and the animated short Dragons, you start to see a difference. First the look. Goombah here complained that he was shiny, reflective, and covered in neon lights. Putting aside that you see in the Dragons short that he can turn the lights on and off at will, where do you think he is sent on missions? Dense futuristic cities where his abilities keep him high up, near bright neon lights and metal surfaces. He blends in to the environment he works in. In game he uses shuriken as his primary weapon. But in the Dragons short he only used them once. And that was as a tool to clip the feathers off the majority of Hanzo's arrows. Every other attack he uses a sword. Ninjas like tech right *slaps genji* YOU CAN FIT SO MUCH TECH IN THIS BABY. You see in Dragons that when Genji lands it is utterly silent. So we got noise canceling tech. You see him dash at high speeds climb. And when he does use his dragon move he does it to gain the advantage in combat. In the short he mostly used it to prove his identity to Hanzo. So I'd love a Genji revisit with a closer look at the Comics and Animated short

One problem I have is the bit on shuriken. It would be relevant if they were thrown by a normal person, but genji throws these at comperable speeds to bullets meaning no matter what it is an effective primary weapon as well as being very quiet.

In my opinion you guys are being way to harsh on genji and are miss representing things. To start off, Genji fights with in melee distance most of the time, within the enemy's backline, using his wide throwing shuriken technique. He doesn't fight from a distance. Also Genji's shurikens, just like real life don't do that much damage unless you hit a head shot and even than it really isn't much.

I know this video was posted one year ago, but I’ve been thinking about it, you could’ve given Genji more points for his appearance because ninjas are supposed to blend in to their environment right? And genji’s environment is mostly futuristic city’s with a lot of white, brown and metallic grey, maybe with neon lights. If he were hiding behind a green neon light he could have his lights on in order to not cast a shadow making him nearly invisible! However in more rural places such as junkertown or Route 66 he does definitely stick out like a sore thumb. Anyways I really enjoy these videos, helping me learn more about real life Shinobi! Keep up with the great videos giving me some real good....Culture Shock

In regards to drawing a a sword from the back there are ways to do that practically. It’s a point of discussion among European martial arts in regards to longswords or bigger. Granted without knowing how long genji’s sword is it’s hard to say but it’s totally possible to draw a sword carried on your back using specific ways and specialised scabbards.

  • @EmpressAaliyah
    @EmpressAaliyah 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

About this sword, I noticed something similar but in the opposite effect with Impa. Has anyone else played as Impa in Hyrule Warriors? She uses this gigantic, totally unrealistic and unfeasable blade, a Goron's Knife. A blade at le as t 6 feet long and easily a foot in width and an inch or 2 in thickness. This blade is entirely impossible for anyone to feasibly use in combat. But the hilt is way more realistic than most video game/anime character's blades. If you look closely, you can see the she doesn't draw the blade from hilt to base, nor does she return it as such. The hilt has a slit on the side about a foot up the length of it, essentially opening up to the blade. When she draws it she pulls it out about a foot then brings her arm down, tilting the blade at and angle and raising it up out of the hilt via that slit. When she returns the blade she does the same thing swinging the blade down sideways across the hilt then pushing it down that last foot of length. Combine that with the fact that while the blade is totally unusable in real life, she can string together attacks that swing the blade around at crazy speeds taking out multiple opponents. She's also super flexible and acrobatic, sometimes planting the blade in the ground and swinging around it, letting her attack everyone in the event she's surrounded. She can even swing that giant blade with her legs...somehow. She wears blue (and sometimes dark purple in other games) she has incredible stealth capabilities, recall that in Ocarina of Time she's the Sage of Shadow, she very knowledgeable and even taught Zelda everything she knows which is the only reason Zelda is even mildly successful as Sheik, who's already been established as a very good ninja.

I don't Genji's current design is actually his fault. During the events of the Venice Incident, Genji's armor was far darker in coloration and design, allowing him to better blend into dark urban/industrial environments while also being incredibly intimidating to look at. However, once the events went public, there was probably a big push from the Overwatch PR team to push characters like Genji and McCree into the limelight, as a way of saying "we aren't hiding anything". This could has lead to Genji being redesigned to look more 'family friendly', smoothing out his darker aspects while further covering up any identifiable features (eyes/tattoo), something that wasn't an issue before because, well, no witnesses.

Genji and moombah I kind of disagree on the blade being too long I will concede however that under normal circumstances you’ll be right but on a theoretical level it would be possible for Genji to draw his blade in the world that he’s in the way I view it is his sheath mechanically opens up to allow him to draw his blade it just looks like it wouldn’t i’m thinking the most practical spot for that to happen would be on the side that’s facing up of the hilt this would make it easy for slicing animation for pulling out the blade on I can understand if you disagree with me I remember overwatch has elements of sci-fi as well as cultural inspirations so yeah and a lot of areas They’ll be some problems and games have been known to gloss over a heck of a lot of details but as one person who over analyzes things to another look at the picture as a whole and then come to a probability in real life where they start to blur that you find true beauty

    2. Introduce herself to her enemies or opponents.
    3. She reveal her NINJA VILLAGE to outsiders it doesn't matter if they are her friends/allies that's extremely dangerous for the village.
    4. She uses a GIANT Shuriken star as one of her primary weapons, which Goombah have said in multiple videos shurikens weren't used as weapons in that way.

Their ninja training, from the looks of it, focused more on combat than anything else. They also live in a world where needs are more readily accessable than back when ninjas came into existence. That's not in defense of either one, it's just an observation of the difference of time and what they have to do to just live.

I love you Gaijin, but you took the cyborg out of the equation when it came to the shuriken. Genji throws them with a force mere humans never could, and they fly across the range almost faster than McCree's bullets. If a shuriken could be thrown with that much force, it wouldn't matter that the weapon was never designed to deliver a lot of force, it's a small, shrapnel shaped piece of metal. It's going to lodge itself deeply into it's target.
If Genji threw one at your stomach, he'd shred your intestines with just one, let alone the three he typically blasts at ya.
But... I also really loved learning about his other weapons. You should do a 101 series on weapons so you don't have to explain weapons in these Which Ninja videos over and over again.
