When I was a kid, before the time of the internet I often opened the geography atlas and I was wondering how people live in the far Yakutia. I feel privileged that today I can open TH-cam and get a glimpse of how people live there. All my respect goes to the people who live in such difficult conditions with extreme cold. @@mokhtaramin2011 actually the summer temperature in Yakutsk is often above 30c. But there are a lot of mosquitoes so you can’t enjoy Yakutsk’s summer 😀

I'm in Pakistan, summers here are like 48-50° and it's really amazing to think that even temperature differences are more than a 100°, humanity still thrives all the same. Really just shows our adaptivity as a species, we live from the hottest hot to the freezing cold
that difference in temperature always fascinated me, after i gave it a thought, i came to the conclusion that the extreme cold would be more bearable. i knew this after i experienced 40celsius degrees in the shadowy areas in bucharest. standing right under the sun at 3-4pm it would have felt like 50celsius, and the asphalt would be even more hot. even one hour after sunset i could still feel the heat getting out of the asphalt, it was unbreathable.
I like how the lady who has been selling food at that market for 20 years was just chilling, nose exposed and everything, but the dude whose only been doing that a year was all covered up and looked like he was about to cry lol
I have also noticed that she was wearing fur which def make her feel so much warmer than him since he was just wearing some normal clothes ! I would say he has less wealth then her may god protect them both and help him face the cold
The fur around her face actually creates a pocket of air that insulates against the outside as well. That's why a lot of winter coats have fur around the edge of the hood.
Living in South Florida my entire life, I think I would immediately freeze solid no matter how many layers I had on. It's amazing how diverse people are to live in so many extreme environments.
Mind you, I don't live in such extreme conditions but up here in northern Canada we do get -40C/F and well dressed it's no problem. I rather like the cold. For me, I can't imagine myself living down in Florida! I get irate when it's above even 60F, lol. That's what makes us humans so tough, though. We adapt and thrive!

I live in Edmonton, Canada. Winters here often hit -40 or -50C with wind chills. It's kind of nice to hear it is even colder in other places around the world! Makes me feel a little less crazy to live here!
i live in northern b.c and we've gotten temperatures as low as -55 here so its pretty weird that anywhere besides the arctic and antarctic can get much colder
Yea i thought finland was cold untile i learnd this the bigest cold we ever had was i think -55c° and that was one time before i was even born normaly the coldest it gets here is -30c° or warmer.... we do go skiny diping in ice baths or just swiming in winter best people even in the -30c° but this is difrent levele

@@thaiylooze8217 With the option between the extreme cold and extreme heat, I'll pick the cold any day all day. You can always put on more clothes, but once you reach your skin, you can't take off any more clothes to stay cool.

I have friends from Yakutsk who visited me in Belarus once and we were having an extreme winter for our country (-30 degrees C). While my family and I were struggling to keep warm with many layers of clothing, they were casually walking around outside like it's nothing.
No idea why TH-cam recommended me this, but I found it absolutely fantastic! Life there is so different from life here in Brazil. You don't find this kind of behaviour in Findland and UK for example. I lived in some countries, you can tell the difference.
Thank you for the presentation. Even with added layers, going outdoors in -50C takes supreme resolve. In much of Europe and the U.S., furs are discouraged. But for brutally cold climates, I understand that they are not only the best, but pretty much a requisite.
Exactly. People who wear fur just for fashion are disgusting. However, in this case it's necessary, so no one can complain about the Yakutian (?) people wearing fur. Btw, leather is something different because it's usually a byproduct of meat production, but fur animals are usually exclusively bred for their fur, so if wearing fur is not necessary, the animal dies for nothing. For some egoistic, selfish, cruel creature to look "good".

As someone from a tropical country, the coldest temperature I've ever experienced was 11°C. I just can't imagine how negative temperatures feel, let alone -50°C or lower 🥴
Oh my!! I understand how that would be cold for you. When it hits -20 C where I live, in Sweden, that is my limit. I then dress like the people of Yakutsk. But my limit in summer is a nice 25 C outside, if it is the same in the water to swim in. Because I have very light skin, I burn easily. Not that much pigment.
Woah 11 degree Celsius is like early spring or late fall in Germany where I live. Currently we have winter and it’s like 0 degrees Celsius outside up to -5 , and I’m so looking forward to 11 degree haha. My perfect temperature is from 20 degree to 30 degree, but I also don’t have problems with up to around 35
This is why people should wear fur. Not for fashion but because it is the warmest thing I've ever found. It's also a sustainable resource (if done correctly), natural and if taken care of properly can last 50+ years.
Virtually all fur is farmed, which makes buying it no different to buying any meat or leather product. So it makes no sense that fur is always held to a different standard than other animal products.

I was born in Kazakhstan and when I was a little girl I was selling meat at an open air market just like this one, in the winter it was usually between -25 and -40 C. It was extremely cold, a calculator wouldn’t work if you leave it outside for longer than 30 seconds, we had to keep it close to the body. I cannot imagine working in -50 or lower, but I guess past -30 it all feels the same. We used to drink a lot of hot tea! It hit home, thank you for the video!

I live in Northern Michigan and thought that *our* temperatures got unbearably cold. But wow! This is much colder! 🥶 To withstand such conditions on a daily basis is truly amazing! My son and I were in the Munising and Newberry areas last January. I pointed out to him that being from Ohio we dress to go out in the cold. Yoopers dress to STAY out in the cold. But like you said, nothing I've ever experienced in Michigan comes close to these temps. -20 F is as cold as I've ever been out in.

I lived in Russia, where it was -30 at the winter, and after moving to Netherlands, where temperature maximum would drop to -5 -10, first couple years it was extremely warm weather for me there, but then I got used to it and I wear the same coats I wore in Russia, and feel the same cold, despite the fact I previously lived in city with temperature -40 as normal

Siberia is in the middle of Russia. Yakutia is on the right, and it’s very cold there. The maximal temperature in Siberia is about -30° or -40° Celsius. Now it is about -10° or -20° Celsius there.

Not sure where in spain you live to be at 50 degrees. Summer in most areas in Spain is bellow 40 degrees. Hottest areas can be above that a few extreme days of the year, but no way 50 is a normal temperature here.

Indeed! Even with those layers of clothes on, there's still their eyes and the other portion of their face that doesn't get covered. And those workers that are out there all day. My nose would start running and my eyes tearing up in not even nearly close to the level of cold there. Then again, I went from Colorado to Arizona, so...
I spent 2 semesters in Yakutsk and went to NEFU. Being from Alaska, I felt at home there and loved the cultural diversity. Thank you for sharing this wonderful region and its culture with the world! I will certainly return one day.
I live in Sweden (Stockholm) And the coldest temperature I've experinced was as - 35 C. I can't imagine working OUTSIDE in a temperature twice as cold!! And watching people walk around without gloves is mindboggling! And that dog just sitting by the buss-stop, my gosh. So impressive how animals and humans adapt to their enviroment.

@@annymp I agree with you. Humans are smart and have found ways to adapt to the extreme weather conditions, but it doesn't make them more 'resilient'. Take 1000m below the surface of the ocean for example. Very few creatures can survive there because of the enormous amount of pressure. The ones that do, have resilience against the pressure. Humans that travel to 1000m under the surface of the ocean require a pressurised submarine or they won't survive at all. It makes humans intelligent, but not resilient per se. The people living in Yakutsk aren't 'more resilient' against extreme colds as opposed to someone from The Netherlands for example. They're using their intelligence to adapt their clothing, sure. They rely on constantly being within walking distance of a heat source, sure. But it doesn't say much about the actual resilience of mankind.
Omg! As someone who comes from the equatorial region imagining temps of - 50C is crazy. The coldest I've been exposed to is about 10C in Japan and had to bundle up just to step out. I think these people from Yakutia are fantastic. Good Video 👍
10C is warm, It’s crazy to think how different people from different regions react to temperatures. I'm personally fine with cold and hot since in my region we get 30C in the summer and around -10 in winter. My climate should be moderate btw. It’s funny how data are so inaccurate on the internet, because of global warming our temperatures and weather are all over the place.
I went to Israel once and they told me they were freezing, because it had 12*C. I am from Germany, where it is below that temperature for at least half a year each year. It took me a while to understand that they don’t have heatings in most houses, so they have 12*C on the inside!

Hi! I live in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Winter here is at least 18°C (62°F) and in summer the maximum is 44°C (105°F). I can't imagine what it would be like to live like you guys, even though I love the cold.
@@camillosteuss Their -50°C weather is more on the extreme side, but i’d much rather prefer weather in like the midwest, you ever lived in this kind of weather? it sucks ass, i much rather prefer 5°F over 100°F. Mosquitoes everywhere, sunburns, sweat that makes my clothes stick and heat draining all my energy.
I'm just now learning about Russian culture, specifically Siberia, I'm fascinated by it. Here in the US, it's common for parents to keep their little kids from misbehaving by telling them they're "going to send you to Siberia ". All us kids ever knew was it was cold there, but I didn't know it was THIS cold! Thanks for the video 👍

I am also Cali born and my boomer parents did say it on occasion. Heard it more on the east coast from older folks, probably because they know cold so Siberia sounds terribly colder when you have something to compare it to. im from germany and the temperature i hate most is around +2 to +5 celsius when its still wet. i call it ugly-cold. under zero, when its frozen and dry, im ok with it. my guess, from minus 20 to minus 40 isnt much of a difference, but what do i know, i might be damn wrong 😅

It's just the condition and the contest, I lived in Berlin and I was ok most of the time with double or triple layers (YES i have a very hot temperature to maintain no) but the same temperature here is almost unbearable with the same clothing because of the humidity in Pianura Padana
well the thing is that in different regions there is different humidity. Your region has high humidity so the winter there is cold, and in Siberia winter is mostly dry because of far location of the seas
This is amazing! I live in Tennessee and this winter the temperature dropped below freezing for 3 straight days. Highs in the 20s and lows around 8 or 9 degrees Fahrenheit. Everyone thought it was the worst thing ever!! 😂 Respect for you guys in the coldest city on earth!
🤣 I'm from LA/TX and when I told my family I was moving to Wyoming, they acted like I was going to freeze to death and die. They were seriously concerned lol. I told them there's an entire country (Canada) further north where millions of humans live. It was hilarious.
Yakutsk is really a very cold city. But also very unique! It is very cold in winter in this city, and very hot in summer! The annual temperature range can reach 90-100 degrees Celsius! Greetings from Volgograd (Russia).

Well don't forget that humidity at that low degree is almost none so in a tropic place with lets say 3c and some humidity the cold pass your clothes after some time ,and hit the bones ....

My friend lived in Yakutia, then in China, she said in Yakutia it was warmer than anywhere in China. The air is dry there and they have central heating.
Excellent video demonstration. I lived 200 miles south of the Arctic circle in northern Canada and experience -50c/-58f during the winter month and love to winter camp in the extreme cold. Stay warm! ✌️

I am Indian, I never experienced lower than 10 degree Celsius, in summer I can easily live in 45 degree Celsius, now it's december and 16 degree outside, I am freezing ❄
I love how different cultures have developed different ways of expressing themselves based on their climate. Like how people who have lived in these super cold climates use beadwork to express their sense of fashion through their clothes. Compared to how people in warmer climates who would expose more skin might use tattoos

Of course they look like you as you guys are the same race. Even some Native American groups like the Inuits and Inupiats look exactly like East Asian people.
Of course we do look alike😄 We even share some words, like around 30% of words in yakutian language have mongolic roots, so i believe we used to talk a lot with each other back in those days
@@cioasify No, there are Han chinese and koreans mbe yamato japanese people. But I heard some koreans born with blue spot, Mongolic people born with blue spot on the back and fades after few years.
I found out the hard way about glasses freezing when living in Faribanks, Alaska. I hadn't really known pain until I tried to take them off when I got inside. It damaged the hair on the side of my head turning it white, leaving me with white streaks in my hair where the glasses had been. If only this channel existed in 1997.

I’m living in the equator zone and I had never experience natural freezing temperatures in my town before.The coldest temperature I had ever experienced was -37C while I was working in a industrial Cold Storage building.The cold really made my hands and legs feel like they were about to fall off from my body and it’s also really difficult to breathe it such cold temperatures.I can’t imagine how -71C will feel like
And I can't breathe when it's hot and humid..If you want your car to breath,go faster and stay in good shape,you put intercooler in it to cool the air to the engine...

I’m from California and never been in cold weather either, but my guess is the body slowly acclimates as far as the breathing goes, and for cold weather causing pain in the body my guess is wearing the right clothes might help? I know theresa a huge difference when I wear my rain boots and my toes freeze in 50F vs when I wear my Uggs and my feet stay warm.

As a Russian Korean, I was born and raised in Yakutia, only in its southern part, I also like that the culture of peoples is preserved in Russia. No reservations. People both lived on the territory of their ancestors, and continue. Dilute Russian culture with their beautiful features. Russia is different, big, beautiful and friendly. Traveling within the country is interesting due to the diversity of cultures. Not so long ago, the Yakut cinema declared itself. Having released some very decent films.

The coldest temperatures I've ever experienced was -32 degrees and gods above, I thought all my appendages were going to freeze right off. I can't imagine what -50~-71 degrees C feels like. That's beyond cold; beyond freezing. Hats off to all Yakuts who not only endure such harsh conditions but thrive in them too! Also, some of the pedestrians you filmed were gloveless - is that even possible in that kind of weather without getting frostbite?!?!

Quite a few times when I have been flying the Polar air routes from the U.S. to China over Siberia, it is warmer at 38,000' in the upper atmosphere than it is on the ground at Yatusk. We would land there only in extreme emergency. It is frankly very hard to get one's head around how cold this really is. My respect to these hardy citizens.

There are variations, of course, in the lapse rate depending on the atmospheric and even nearby terrain conditions, but it is used as a standard to determine the decrease in the temperature with an increase in altitude. A "standard" day is, if I recall correctly is sea level elevation, 15C temperature, and an altimeter (air pressure) setting of 1013hpa. Thus if the temperature on the ground is already minus 40C or so, you are already dealing with a cold parcel of air. But as you increase in altitude, it comes back to what you would compute per the formula. It's really fun stuff to think about.

Wow, I have lived in Hawaii for most of my life. When the temperature drops to 60 F, I feel like I am freezing. I cant imagine living in such cold temperatures. I also am surprised that an open air market exists in such cold temperatures.
I`m from the UK, looking at Hawaii climate statistics you have a really strange weather though. The all year average high and low temp curve is so flat. Its like you dont have a real winter but you summer is not super extreme either. Very lucky compared to many places that have a big swing in temps.
I have lived in Missouri for most of my 47 years, but today would LOVE to be in Hawaii. It's 4:45 PM and 17 degrees. I think it's the highest the temperature has been for 24 hours.
I feel like a baby. Living in the south of England, the worst I've seen this winter was -7°C overnight. I can't even fathom anything colder than -19°C which is about the temperature of the walk-in freezer at work. The hottest I've ever experienced was only like 38°C too. Crazy to me that you're further into the negatives than almost twice the range of temperatures I have even experienced. Human beings, man. Impressive.

My mother is from Yakuts and I was born in the US, when she was telling me her childhood memories and stories I was surprised how she could survived. I been there only in summer to visit my relatives. But in a few weeks I'll be there so lemme see how it is there. Btw. Love ur content.
I totally understand, I think it must feel very different. In Russia we have the whole infrastructure build around keeping us warm in the winter. The buildings are built a certain way, there is generous heating in every indoor space, everyone has winter clothes. We also go through acclimatisation every fall, when even -2C can feel uncomfortable at first. And yes, we complain about the cold too :)
Cold have some degrees: step one: 0C - feel cold. Step two: -10C, reel cold, legs and ears frozen, sitting somewhere is forbidden, talk in open air not welcome. Step three: -20C and lower, extreem cold. I live in Russia.
I hear you. I grew up in New York but the military stationed me in the south and I can't take winter anymore either. I'm grateful I only have about 10 more weeks of winter as spring comes early to the Carolina's.
Uh, don't admire us. I'm Yakut from Russia, Yakutia. It's not even so cold in here. It's usually -44C° and it's considered normal temperature in winter . If it's below -29C° it's pretty warm temperature. You just gotta have a lot of money to buy warm clothes and don't be outside 24/7, then you won't get sick.

I live in the opposite end of Eurasia in SW Spain, we eat fish, chicken, pork and some red meat plus a lot of beans, fruit and vegetables, we also produce beer and wine here so life is much easier than in Yakutia especially as the temperature never drops below zero and in winter is rarely over 30ª - we hardly need heating or air-conditioning. We spend a lot of time eating and drinking in out door bars or going to the beach. I suppose this would be fascinating for you but your life is fascinating for me too. It looks hard but very relaxed.
Many years ago I lived in Calgary, Canada, and sometimes the temperature would go down to -40° in the winter. It was brutal, and I can understand how people in Yakutia deal with -71°. You have my sympathies!
Oh yeah Calgary can get bad I remember last year around Christmas we had an awful blizzard where the temperatures went to -41 and lower with wind chills. I am from india and i use to think my body isnt made for canadian winters but then i discovered properties of various fabrics and how to layer them helps alot with dealing with winters. Most of the immigrants hate canadian cold so much because we try to deal with canadian winter based on our knowledge of how to deal with winter of our native country.

Но летом у нас +30 днем и ночью-это просто лето, а в МСК мне рассказывали как им жарко при +26)))у нас без кепки даже в апреле можно солнечный удар словить, а в МСК в июне такое солнце приятное))))у нас оно хочет тебя поджарить к .......... I live in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada and it’s common for us to experience -40°C in the winter. I used to live north of here….a 18-20 hour drive northwest of Sudbury and it was VERY cold there for the entire winter. There we went grocery shopping with our cars still running (no, we had no issues with people stealing running vehicles) because if you shut off your engine for about an hour, it might not restart. We had to plug in what’s called “block heaters” which we had to have installed in our cars to keep the engine and battery warm so our cars have a better chance of starting. When you do drive off, you can be sure you’re driving on square tires for a bit since the cold freezes the rubber as it lays on the road. Here in Sudbury though, we only have to worry about these precautions when we get a really cold snap. The temps could be around -40°C for days and days. Otherwise the temps we get in the winter is -25°C. January and February are the coldest months here. I love it though. I hate summers and the heat they bring. I’d rather it was cold outside the entire year. :)
I was in toronto driving truck at night when the polar vortex winter hit 6 years ago I think it was .It was ok cause the cover alls I had on were like a heavy sleeping bag .Has to be - 25 outside or they were way to hot to ware them .It was - 40 at that time .
I born and lived in Yakutsk 18 years, i was confused about -70°c. The lowest temperature, that recorded in Yakitsk was -64,4°c, but it was in 1891. Even can't imagine, how could we lived, if it would be -70°. Commonly it's about -35° - -45°, but of course it variated year by year.
Yeas this figure was brought up to make the title more catchy, even in Oymyakon the lowest officially recorded temperature is just shy of minus 68C. But still it's very cold.
They're absolutely beautiful in anything they wear! Not to mention they're strong and powerful women as well! Anyone living in those types of conditions has to be a particular kind of tough! It adds a whole other level of beauty. In strength and self-respect comes true beauty.
My father works in Sakha republic, and recently there was -57°C for a couple days. Truly insane climate, although where I am from there was -56,7°C once, the absolute minimum in our republic, so it's kind of close, considering average minimum is -50°C. The beaded items are gorgeous. I live in the mountains of upstate New York. While it does get 🥶 cold enough to cause frost bite on occasions (within 4 minutes on exposed skin )... I can't imagine living in an area that extreme. Very strong people up there for sure.
I grew up in Edmonton , Canada, which is quite cold in winter, but nothing like Yakutia. I have great respect for that, very interesting documentaries about this region.
The coldest temperature I've ever experienced was -30 degree Celcius in Poland. That morning there was no direct bus to my school, so I had to walk 15 minutes in this weather conditions. What I remember it was windy so the cold was even worse, I felt like my eyeballs and the inside of my nose was going to freeze, even when I got to school they were aching for an hour. I also had frost all over hair, eyelashes and eyebrows, it all melted inside the heated building.
Damn I had a similar thing. Our bus was late for half an hour, it had -30° celsius and it was quite windy and wore a skirt and a thin crochet pantyhose My legs where red from the cold afterwards.
You could set up a website selling the Yakutian mittens and maybe even the more expensive boots. And even warmer weather Russia (cheaper felt) ones. Even linking to another company selling them and making a %.
I'm down for buying gorgeous Yakutsk boots much like what Dayana wore. I have never seen boots that gorgeous and you can't find that kind of style in Vancouver Island. 💕

Honestly i live in England and people are just miserable, thought that could be to do with how much rain and cloud we get, we spend a large portion of the year with grey skies, so this could be a factor on general optimism, i mean our entire culture is built around sarcasm and peccimisum. And its possible though cold that area could have more sunlight. I don’t think its a bad thing were this way honestly its kinda liberating but it can be a downer.

@froog I live in New England: it got to 24 below a couple times in my lifetime......and all the car batteries were dying! It was sad to see alot of people caught off guard....mostly from out of state who didn't realize we sometimes get winds straight down from Canada.....Those of us born here know we have to keep at least one set of gear for a serious freeze, though it would hardly save us in Yakutia, right?! LOL

I'm in Pakistan, summers here are like 48-50° and it's really amazing to think that even temperature differences are more than a 100°, humanity still thrives all the same. Really just shows our adaptivity as a species, we live from the hottest hot to the freezing cold

that difference in temperature always fascinated me, after i gave it a thought, i came to the conclusion that the extreme cold would be more bearable. i knew this after i experienced 40celsius degrees in the shadowy areas in bucharest. standing right under the sun at 3-4pm it would have felt like 50celsius, and the asphalt would be even more hot. even one hour after sunset i could still feel the heat getting out of the asphalt, it was unbreathable.
I like how the lady who has been selling food at that market for 20 years was just chilling, nose exposed and everything, but the dude whose only been doing that a year was all covered up and looked like he was about to cry lol
I have also noticed that she was wearing fur which def make her feel so much warmer than him since he was just wearing some normal clothes ! I would say he has less wealth then her may god protect them both and help him face the cold
The fur around her face actually creates a pocket of air that insulates against the outside as well. That's why a lot of winter coats have fur around the edge of the hood.

i live in northern b.c and we've gotten temperatures as low as -55 here so its pretty weird that anywhere besides the arctic and antarctic can get much colder
Yea i thought finland was cold untile i learnd this the bigest cold we ever had was i think -55c° and that was one time before i was even born normaly the coldest it gets here is -30c° or warmer.... we do go skiny diping in ice baths or just swiming in winter best people even in the -30c° but this is difrent levele

I have friends from Yakutsk who visited me in Belarus once and we were having an extreme winter for our country (-30 degrees C). While my family and I were struggling to keep warm with many layers of clothing, they were casually walking around outside like it's nothing.

Thank you for the presentation. Even with added layers, going outdoors in -50C takes supreme resolve. In much of Europe and the U.S., furs are discouraged. But for brutally cold climates, I understand that they are not only the best, but pretty much a requisite.
Exactly. People who wear fur just for fashion are disgusting. However, in this case it's necessary, so no one can complain about the Yakutian (?) people wearing fur.
Btw, leather is something different because it's usually a byproduct of meat production, but fur animals are usually exclusively bred for their fur, so if wearing fur is not necessary, the animal dies for nothing. For some egoistic, selfish, cruel creature to look "good".

As someone from a tropical country, the coldest temperature I've ever experienced was 11°C. I just can't imagine how negative temperatures feel, let alone -50°C or lower 🥴
Oh my!! I understand how that would be cold for you. When it hits -20 C where I live, in Sweden, that is my limit. I then dress like the people of Yakutsk. But my limit in summer is a nice 25 C outside, if it is the same in the water to swim in. Because I have very light skin, I burn easily. Not that much pigment.

This is why people should wear fur. Not for fashion but because it is the warmest thing I've ever found. It's also a sustainable resource (if done correctly), natural and if taken care of properly can last 50+ years.
Virtually all fur is farmed, which makes buying it no different to buying any meat or leather product. So it makes no sense that fur is always held to a different standard than other animal products.

I was born in Kazakhstan and when I was a little girl I was selling meat at an open air market just like this one, in the winter it was usually between -25 and -40 C. It was extremely cold, a calculator wouldn’t work if you leave it outside for longer than 30 seconds, we had to keep it close to the body. I cannot imagine working in -50 or lower, but I guess past -30 it all feels the same. We used to drink a lot of hot tea! It hit home, thank you for the video!

My son and I were in the Munising and Newberry areas last January. I pointed out to him that being from Ohio we dress to go out in the cold. Yoopers dress to STAY out in the cold. But like you said, nothing I've ever experienced in Michigan comes close to these temps. -20 F is as cold as I've ever been out in.

I lived in Russia, where it was -30 at the winter, and after moving to Netherlands, where temperature maximum would drop to -5 -10, first couple years it was extremely warm weather for me there, but then I got used to it and I wear the same coats I wore in Russia, and feel the same cold, despite the fact I previously lived in city with temperature -40 as normal

Siberia is in the middle of Russia. Yakutia is on the right, and it’s very cold there. The maximal temperature in Siberia is about -30° or -40° Celsius. Now it is about -10° or -20° Celsius there.

Not sure where in spain you live to be at 50 degrees. Summer in most areas in Spain is bellow 40 degrees. Hottest areas can be above that a few extreme days of the year, but no way 50 is a normal temperature here.

My nose would start running and my eyes tearing up in not even nearly close to the level of cold there. Then again, I went from Colorado to Arizona, so...
I spent 2 semesters in Yakutsk and went to NEFU. Being from Alaska, I felt at home there and loved the cultural diversity. Thank you for sharing this wonderful region and its culture with the world! I will certainly return one day.

I live in Sweden (Stockholm) And the coldest temperature I've experinced was as - 35 C. I can't imagine working OUTSIDE in a temperature twice as cold!!
And watching people walk around without gloves is mindboggling! And that dog just sitting by the buss-stop, my gosh. So impressive how animals and humans adapt to their enviroment.
The humidity decides it all. Very dry air makes it different over there. Having said that, I psychology still prefer minus 30 in Sweden 😄

@@annymp I agree with you. Humans are smart and have found ways to adapt to the extreme weather conditions, but it doesn't make them more 'resilient'. Take 1000m below the surface of the ocean for example. Very few creatures can survive there because of the enormous amount of pressure. The ones that do, have resilience against the pressure. Humans that travel to 1000m under the surface of the ocean require a pressurised submarine or they won't survive at all. It makes humans intelligent, but not resilient per se.
The people living in Yakutsk aren't 'more resilient' against extreme colds as opposed to someone from The Netherlands for example. They're using their intelligence to adapt their clothing, sure. They rely on constantly being within walking distance of a heat source, sure. But it doesn't say much about the actual resilience of mankind.
Omg! As someone who comes from the equatorial region imagining temps of - 50C is crazy. The coldest I've been exposed to is about 10C in Japan and had to bundle up just to step out. I think these people from Yakutia are fantastic. Good Video 👍

10C is warm, It’s crazy to think how different people from different regions react to temperatures. I'm personally fine with cold and hot since in my region we get 30C in the summer and around -10 in winter. My climate should be moderate btw. It’s funny how data are so inaccurate on the internet, because of global warming our temperatures and weather are all over the place.
I went to Israel once and they told me they were freezing, because it had 12*C. I am from Germany, where it is below that temperature for at least half a year each year. It took me a while to understand that they don’t have heatings in most houses, so they have 12*C on the inside!

Hi! I live in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Winter here is at least 18°C (62°F) and in summer the maximum is 44°C (105°F). I can't imagine what it would be like to live like you guys, even though I love the cold.

Here in the US, it's common for parents to keep their little kids from misbehaving by telling them they're "going to send you to Siberia ". I live in north Italy and the coldest it gets here in winter is -10°C and I can barely step foot outside. I cannot imagine what it's like to live in -50°C let alone -70°C!! that's insane it seems almost impossible. hats off to these people it's incredible how humans can adapt and live even in such harsh environments
im from germany and the temperature i hate most is around +2 to +5 celsius when its still wet. i call it ugly-cold. under zero, when its frozen and dry, im ok with it. my guess, from minus 20 to minus 40 isnt much of a difference, but what do i know, i might be damn wrong 😅

well the thing is that in different regions there is different humidity. Your region has high humidity so the winter there is cold, and in Siberia winter is mostly dry because of far location of the seas

This is amazing! I live in Tennessee and this winter the temperature dropped below freezing for 3 straight days. Highs in the 20s and lows around 8 or 9 degrees Fahrenheit. Everyone thought it was the worst thing ever!! 😂 Respect for you guys in the coldest city on earth!

My friend lived in Yakutia, then in China, she said in Yakutia it was warmer than anywhere in China. The air is dry there and they have central heating.

I am Indian, I never experienced lower than 10 degree Celsius, in summer I can easily live in 45 degree Celsius, now it's december and 16 degree outside, I am freezing ❄
I love how different cultures have developed different ways of expressing themselves based on their climate. Like how people who have lived in these super cold climates use beadwork to express their sense of fashion through their clothes. Compared to how people in warmer climates who would expose more skin might use tattoos

I found out the hard way about glasses freezing when living in Faribanks, Alaska. I hadn't really known pain until I tried to take them off when I got inside. It damaged the hair on the side of my head turning it white, leaving me with white streaks in my hair where the glasses had been. If only this channel existed in 1997.

@@viiperbiite I didn't realize they had frozen to my head. I got into my car, the glasses fogged up when the car became warmer so I pulled them off to clean them and then screamed in pain. Never did that again. Sometimes pain is the best teacher.

I’m living in the equator zone and I had never experience natural freezing temperatures in my town before.The coldest temperature I had ever experienced was -37C while I was working in a industrial Cold Storage building.The cold really made my hands and legs feel like they were about to fall off from my body and it’s also really difficult to breathe it such cold temperatures.I can’t imagine how -71C will feel like

I’m from California and never been in cold weather either, but my guess is the body slowly acclimates as far as the breathing goes, and for cold weather causing pain in the body my guess is wearing the right clothes might help? I know theresa a huge difference when I wear my rain boots and my toes freeze in 50F vs when I wear my Uggs and my feet stay warm.

As a Russian Korean, I was born and raised in Yakutia, only in its southern part, I also like that the culture of peoples is preserved in Russia. No reservations. People both lived on the territory of their ancestors, and continue. Dilute Russian culture with their beautiful features. Russia is different, big, beautiful and friendly. Traveling within the country is interesting due to the diversity of cultures. Not so long ago, the Yakut cinema declared itself. Having released some very decent films.

The coldest temperatures I've ever experienced was -32 degrees and gods above, I thought all my appendages were going to freeze right off. I can't imagine what -50~-71 degrees C feels like. Quite a few times when I have been flying the Polar air routes from the U.S. to China over Siberia, it is warmer at 38,000' in the upper atmosphere than it is on the ground at Yatusk. We would land there only in extreme emergency.
It is frankly very hard to get one's head around how cold this really is. My respect to these hardy citizens.

@@franklinegbuche7097 You are welcome. There are variations, of course, in the lapse rate depending on the atmospheric and even nearby terrain conditions, but it is used as a standard to determine the decrease in the temperature with an increase in altitude.
A "standard" day is, if I recall correctly is sea level elevation, 15C temperature, and an altimeter (air pressure) setting of 1013hpa. Thus if the temperature on the ground is already minus 40C or so, you are already dealing with a cold parcel of air. But as you increase in altitude, it comes back to what you would compute per the formula.
It's really fun stuff to think about.

Wow, I have lived in Hawaii for most of my life. When the temperature drops to 60 F, I feel like I am freezing. I cant imagine living in such cold temperatures. I also am surprised that an open air market exists in such cold temperatures.
I`m from the UK, looking at Hawaii climate statistics you have a really strange weather though. The all year average high and low temp curve is so flat. Its like you dont have a real winter but you summer is not super extreme either. Very lucky compared to many places that have a big swing in temps.
I have lived in Missouri for most of my 47 years, but today would LOVE to be in Hawaii. It's 4:45 PM and 17 degrees. I think it's the highest the temperature has been for 24 hours.

I feel like a baby. Living in the south of England, the worst I've seen this winter was -7°C overnight. I can't even fathom anything colder than -19°C which is about the temperature of the walk-in freezer at work. The hottest I've ever experienced was only like 38°C too. Crazy to me that you're further into the negatives than almost twice the range of temperatures I have even experienced.

To me this is insane. In South Africa we complain when it's -2°C. -20 is hard to imagine and -70 seems unfathomable.
I totally understand, I think it must feel very different. In Russia we have the whole infrastructure build around keeping us warm in the winter. The buildings are built a certain way, there is generous heating in every indoor space, everyone has winter clothes. We also go through acclimatisation every fall, when even -2C can feel uncomfortable at first. And yes, we complain about the cold too :)
Cold have some degrees: step one: 0C - feel cold. Step two: -10C, reel cold, legs and ears frozen, sitting somewhere is forbidden, talk in open air not welcome. Step three: -20C and lower, extreem cold. I live in Russia.

Uh, don't admire us. I'm Yakut from Russia, Yakutia. It's not even so cold in here. It's usually -44C° and it's considered normal temperature in winter . If it's below -29C° it's pretty warm temperature. You just gotta have a lot of money to buy warm clothes and don't be outside 24/7, then you won't get sick.

I live in the opposite end of Eurasia in SW Spain, we eat fish, chicken, pork and some red meat plus a lot of beans, fruit and vegetables, we also produce beer and wine here so life is much easier than in Yakutia especially as the temperature never drops below zero and in winter is rarely over 30ª - we hardly need heating or air-conditioning. We spend a lot of time eating and drinking in out door bars or going to the beach. I suppose this would be fascinating for you but your life is fascinating for me too. It looks hard but very relaxed.
Many years ago I lived in Calgary, Canada, and sometimes the temperature would go down to -40° in the winter. It was brutal, and I can understand how people in Yakutia deal with -71°. You have my sympathies!

I am from india and i use to think my body isnt made for canadian winters but then i discovered properties of various fabrics and how to layer them helps alot with dealing with winters. Most of the immigrants hate canadian cold so much because we try to deal with canadian winter based on our knowledge of how to deal with winter of our native country.

Я Зимовал как-то в Сибири по работе, Москве, Курске....везде по разному ощущается))) Но вот Вам мысль-у нас если зимой перчатки или шапку не оденешь-ну дискомфортно будет, простынешь может-а там можно руки или уши обморозить) Я десят лет не носил зимние ботинки-кроссовки на толстой подошве-самый комфортный вариант. Но летом у нас +30 днем и ночью-это просто лето, а в МСК мне рассказывали как им жарко при +26)))у нас без кепки даже в апреле можно солнечный удар словить, а в МСК в июне такое солнце приятное))))у нас оно хочет тебя поджарить к ..........

I live in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada and it’s common for us to experience -40°C in the winter. I used to live north of here….a 18-20 hour drive northwest of Sudbury and it was VERY cold there for the entire winter. There we went grocery shopping with our cars still running (no, we had no issues with people stealing running vehicles) because if you shut off your engine for about an hour, it might not restart. We had to plug in what’s called “block heaters” which we had to have installed in our cars to keep the engine and battery warm so our cars have a better chance of starting. When you do drive off, you can be sure you’re driving on square tires for a bit since the cold freezes the rubber as it lays on the road. Here in Sudbury though, we only have to worry about these precautions when we get a really cold snap. The temps could be around -40°C for days and days. Otherwise the temps we get in the winter is -25°C. January and February are the coldest months here. I love it though. I hate summers and the heat they bring. I’d rather it was cold outside the entire year. :)

I was in toronto driving truck at night when the polar vortex winter hit 6 years ago I think it was .It was ok cause the cover alls I had on were like a heavy sleeping bag .Has to be - 25 outside or they were way to hot to ware them .It was - 40 at that time .

I born and lived in Yakutsk 18 years, i was confused about -70°c. The lowest temperature, that recorded in Yakitsk was -64,4°c, but it was in 1891. Even can't imagine, how could we lived, if it would be -70°. Commonly it's about -35° - -45°, but of course it variated year by year.
I think -70 is about Oymyakon which is located in Yakutia (not Yakutsk but region is the same) so it's kinda generalized

My father works in Sakha republic, and recently there was -57°C for a couple days. Truly insane climate, although where I am from there was -56,7°C once, the absolute minimum in our republic, so it's kind of close, considering average minimum is -50°C. The beaded items are gorgeous. I live in the mountains of upstate New York. While it does get 🥶 cold enough to cause frost bite on occasions (within 4 minutes on exposed skin )... I can't imagine living in an area that extreme. Very strong people up there for sure.

I grew up in Edmonton , Canada, which is quite cold in winter, but nothing like Yakutia. I have great respect for that, very interesting documentaries about this region.
The coldest temperature I've ever experienced was -30 degree Celcius in Poland. That morning there was no direct bus to my school, so I had to walk 15 minutes in this weather conditions. What I remember it was windy so the cold was even worse, I felt like my eyeballs and the inside of my nose was going to freeze, even when I got to school they were aching for an hour. I also had frost all over hair, eyelashes and eyebrows, it all melted inside the heated building.

Honestly i live in England and people are just miserable, thought that could be to do with how much rain and cloud we get, we spend a large portion of the year with grey skies, so this could be a factor on general optimism, i mean our entire culture is built around sarcasm and peccimisum. And its possible though cold that area could have more sunlight.

It was sad to see alot of people caught off guard....mostly from out of state who didn't realize we sometimes get winds straight down from Canada.....Those of us born here know we have to keep at least one set of gear for a serious freeze, though it would hardly save us in Yakutia, right?! @@agreeable-youth Hmhmh, I understand what you mean but sometimes we should think a bit more/longer before we complain about even the smallest thing! People are so fast to be pessimistic and complain so :) I will try to not complain about the cold weather. Of course, you’re still allowed to complain

These videos are so cool. I live in the Northern US (Montana) and the coldest I have seen here is -36*C which is already brutally cold but nothing compared to -71*C.

Автор немного приукрасила по цифрам. Абсолютный минимум в Якутске -64.4 градуса зарегистрирован в конце 19 века. В Верхоянске и Оймяконе чуть холоднее регистрировали в районе -67.8. Есть какая-то запись в дневнике геолога от 1926 года, что было -71.2 в районе Оймякона, но никаких подтверждений этому нет.
Короче ниже 60 крайне редко бывает
