Robert, your videos have REALLY helped me out with my new 850. Saved me a ton of time a headaches. ... Before I saw this video, I took the cluster out by only removing the left side and hopefully didn't break anything. Going to take the whole thing off next time!
Based on a video that came with a replacement odometer gear, we only undid half of the dash pad of our '93 850 to pull the instrument cluster. It DID NOT come out very easily, and after watching several of your videos we realize how lucky we were to not have broken the thing in two! So, we took your advice and used this video to pull the entire dash pad. All of your instructions were great, and it all went very well. Thanks so much for all of your helpful videos. Your channel will be our primary source from now on for all of our dyi efforts on our beloved 850. Thanks again!!
My odometer gear broke on my '96 850 and with this video, I was able to get my instrument cluster out and replace the gear! Saved me so much hassle and headache
I've been fixing my 93 850 for over ten years and removing the dash pad was my worst of many repair experiences. Avoid it at all costs! The plastic is super brittle and cracks almost as easily as a potato chip. No glue will permanently adhere to the black slippery brittle plastic. The only way to glue it is to use a hot soldering iron to mush aluminum mesh window screening into half of the surface area and then apply a glue that will grab on to the screen that is not melted into the plastic. It's a long and tedious ordeal and it's impossible to even know if you are shaping the plastic as it originally was curved especially if it was split across near the airbag as in this video. Leaving it in two pieces is my suggestion.
Robert DIY Robert, Just wanted to give you an update on what the REAL culprit was with the rattling. Yesterday, I was driving at highway speeds and the rattling comes back louder than ever. I noted, however that the winds were also VERY strong. I turned off all accessories to try and listen. I got behind a truck, and the rattle disappeared just like that. I moved away from the truck to engage the rattle again. Sure enough, it started back up. By chance, I put my hand up on the plate that houses the reading lights in the front (right near the sunroof), and I feel this ungodly knocking on my hand. Initial impressions were, "Oh no, something's going to fly off my roof," but no. It turns out that the rubber seal in between the windshield and the roof had come lose and was gradually getting worked out from the center of the car out to the ends by headwind. The massive rattling was actually the rubber seal flapping against the roof at extremely high velocity, causing the sound to vibrate down the A-pillars and giving the impression that it was coming from the dashboard. Not the easiest thing to get back in its track, but I worked it back in and the problem is nonexistent. Thanks for all your feedback!
Robert DIY I noticed it coming loose in its "preliminary phase." It held out longer than it really should have, but when it went, it was loud. Anyway, like I said, I worked it back in... at least temporarily. May have to glue it in if it comes out again, but at least I know the noise was coming from that and not a strut or the blower fan!
Great video, I just purchased a 1994 Volvo 850 GLT wagon and am wanting to change the dash, resin is I don't like the blue interior and want to fit the grey version Thanks Ryan
thank you sooo much ! ! ! I just bought Volvo 850 and speedometer cluster doesn't work, well it's stops on 157.000 km / 97.000 miles . . I'm gonna try it tommorow if it working :) Thx again
Hi Robert. I did my odometer and am having trouble re-fitting the driver side of the dash. Seems there's something holding it out about a half inch. Could that be because I didn't remove the speaker?
Robert. Very detailed and informative, thank you! None of the illumination bulbs work on my 96 Volvo 850. Is this how I gain access to replace the bulbs?? Thanks, greg
To get to the cluster bulbs. However, if NONE of them work, my guess would be that the dimmer is broken. Does any of the console lights work? Volvo 850 Odometer Gear Repair / Replacement - Auto Repair Series
Thanks for all of the great videos, Robert. The portion by the windshield that the dash pad slots into, the one that holds the alarm light, is that easily replaceable?
I appreciate your response , one more thing i need your help in . I need to know size of Automatic Transmission Cooler Oil Hose O-ring Seal for VOLVO 850R , it is not easy to get original one in my city , there is one Seal store i need to check with it by size .
This is very helpful. I had the ABS controller replaced in my 1996 850 but the ABS warning lamp is not working and now the bulb(s) need to be replaced. I would like to replace the bulb(s) myself if possible. How do I gain access to change the bulbs in the warning lamps?
Hello I have a 1997 Volvo 850 turbo wagon. When I bought the vehicle the person whom I purchased it from let me know that the heater core was missing. When I bought this vehicle it was on the summer time. I notice that the cool air was not sufficient enough to cool down my vehicle. Or better yet said that air itself was not sufficient, because it was putting out cold air but not enough air was going around the vehicle. Also the air duct underneath the driver seat and passenger seat did not have any flow of air coming out. What could be causing that no air comes out if the passenger air ducts, and why is the air not keeping and or maintaining a constant cool temperature inside of my vehicle? I hope you can point me on the right direction man so far all your videos have answered most of my questions very helpful indeed.
Apparently Volvo didn't change much with their interior plastics from the 200/700 series cars that I'm used to tinkering on. I think that was the worst thing about the 760 I used to own - the stupid dash plastics. Even if you're very careful with them, sometimes you just get one that explodes into a bunch of pieces. :( I wonder if there's some way to reinforce a good one from the junkyard to give the pad more strength but still have it fit properly.
Took this from a recent reply: "No glue will permanently adhere to the black slippery brittle plastic. The only way to glue it is to use a hot soldering iron to mush aluminum mesh window screening into half of the surface area and then apply a glue that will grab on to the screen that is not melted into the plastic." Use aluminum screen because nylon melts. I would suggest that the adhesive glue should be flexible, not the drill-able kind. Might smell for awhile especially when dash gets hot.
May be odd commenting on an 8 year old video but 9:38 to 10:15 is worth its weight in 2 by 4's (Priced one at HD lately?). Not matter what 850 problem I have I can always find the answer in one of Robert's video's.
Hi Robert, I just replaced the dash on my daughters car, (94 850) but now I have the SRS light on. Doesn't this require a reset to turn this light off, and do you have the procedure to do this? Thank you for all you"ve done for the Volvo community!
rixkixx From Haynes, with battery disconnected switch ignition on. With ignition on, connect battery negative terminal. Then turn ignition off. Then turn it on again and SRS light should disappear after 10sec.
Robert DIY I don't know if it can turn the SRS light off but this is how you avoid turning it on when reconnecting the battery after you have unplugged and plugged in an airbag.
We have an 850 that needs the dash pad replace. Plus the odometer has not worked. Where can dash pad be purchased?1997 model. Do you work on other people's cars?
Thanks for all the videos Rob! I bought an 850 turbo thinking I could flip it, my wife says no no no, she want's to keep it. So comfortable, but it does have some issues. Your vids give me the confidence I can take care of most of them. Is there a place online to buy parts at a discount? I am also looking for door panels and seat covers....thanks
Hi Robert, Do I need to remove dash to get to the Recirculation damper motor assembly including flap. Some say you just remove glove box and knee bumper panel and just take out 3 screw that mount motor. A fly would have a hard time getting in there to turn the rear screws. My issue is that when I want to close the flap, I get a clicking and thumping sound as it closes. To open, no issues. I see that the arm is connected, motor runs fine but there is the struggle to close. A gear may have broken somewhere, but upon inspection I could not see much. How do you get in there to fix? My dash has never been apart. As I was taking apart the glove box I could see how the plastic washers behind the glove box just crumbled in my hand. If I remember correctly, Volvo made many plastic components environmentally safe... meaning over time it will decompose. So the engine will go 500,000 miles without the dashboard :-))
PAUL MACZ Paul, you sound like you understand your situation. Good plastic, I do mean plastic glue will be your friend. I purchased a small $12 Husky driver set that has small T-bits, Flat-bits, and Cross tip-bits. It also included a 6" flex extension that I used to get that rear screw out. Once out, I opened one of those motors and found a gear with a tooth missing. Hope that helps. Oh, you don't have to remove the entire dash, just access it as you described.
Hey Robert I have a question. If my dash pad is lifting/peeling from right on top of the stereo unit is there any way to repair it or do I have to replace the whole dash pad ? Thank you in advance
I'm amazed the ipd video advising people to just pull a few screws and force one side up is still online. Wonder how many dashpads have gone to an early grave over that nonsense.
Hi Robert, Was driving along the other day when I heard what sounded like something shearing off of my 850. Then, I heard rattles from somewhere inside the dash. Air still worked fine, in fact I replaced the fan with an aftermarket one about a year ago, but it becomes audible when the fan is operating. Planning to take my dashboard out to replace my odometer gear, but before I do, any ideas as to where I should look for the rattling culprit? It sounds like a piece of plastic broke off and is in there, or maybe the new fan became loose and is hitting its chamber at an angle? It seems to become audible between 30-45 MPH, especially with the fan speed at about medium. I noticed how the plastics get very brittle on these cars so perhaps it could be that? Thanks for any help!
Robert DIY Yes, but only if I'm moving. I have a feeling it might be air passing through a possibly loose fan, or some cracked brittle debris floating around in the dashboard?
Robert DIY It isn't quite that bad... yet. There is a separate noise that sounds more like the ones in that video, but not nearly as pronounced. Thanks for your feedback!
There are 4 mounts to the firewall. They break one at a time. Then they start to split the duct work and it goes down hill. - th-cam.com/video/wtxziL_bPcc/w-d-xo.html
Kristian Adams Those are the stock dash speakers for the 850's, x70 cars. They might be 4" tweeters. I can look on them and get the details if you need me to.
Robert DIY Hey Rob, yes please, looks like it's the stock surround has been used, with an aftermarket tweeter dropped in. Unless, like you say, it's from a V70.
The speakers are stock. Volvo used these tweeters in the dash and far rear speakers in the wagons. Most of the speakers in the 850's have fallen apart, the magnets off the backs of them are gone.
Hi Robert , i have 850 T-5R 1995 .On the right side, next to the climate control unit ,on the dash i have two holes.I tried with filler but there are still visible.Do i need to remove the whole dash ,if i want to change it and can i take out just the right side ,under the glove box?I "ll appreciate your advice.Thanks.
Did you make sure you clean the valve that is by the intake tube. That valve gets really clogged you will need a pic or a hard piece of wire. Brake or gunk cleaner to clean the passages of the vacuum ports of the valve make sure air blows thru and there's no more blockage
Hi took the dash pad off my 850 today. The only part I struggled with was the glove box. To get the arms to disconnect from the glove box cover was really difficult. Sad to say some plastics broke. Volvo plastic quality isnt great. Is there another way to disconnect the arms.
Hello! I recently changed the dash pad, it's perfect except that the airbag light stayed on, the passenger airbag connector is well connected, any idea what I can do?
If the car is '96 or newer you will need a reset tool that works through the OBD2 port. Some code readers will reset it. If the vehicle is '95 or older you can reset it with the OBD1 box under the hood.
Robert, I have a 1996 Volvo 850 and I was wondering if there is a trick to removing the arms from the glovebox compartment. I think i need to pull the glovebox out because I have a weird noise coming from behind it that i think is related to the recirculation button. I can hear it whenever the key is turned on whether the engine is running or not and it is louder when I turn the recirculation button on. From what I've read it sounds like it is most likely something to do with a vent getting in a bind or falling off and it keeps trying to move it but can't. Any advice is much appreciated.
@@RobertDIY Your videos are great for reference. Thank you for your expertise. I should have asked “ can I fit a 1999 S70 dash pad on a 1997 850 as a direct replacement. Also can I use a glove box door from the 99 S70 on a 97 850 as a direct fit replacement. Thank you.
Hi Robert, I need serious advice in restoring my 1996 Volvo 850 glt and have been following a lot of your Videos. Do you have a video on replacing the entire Dash, not just the dash pad. It would help a lot. also from where can i order or buy a new dash, the whole dash ?? please and thankyou.
Thankyou Robert, as always, you always help out...really appreciate every video you put up and help god knows how many thousands of people...God bless you..
Really helpful vid, man. Thanks! One Q tho, i own a 97' 850 R and my dash is loose, like REALLY loose, do you know how I could tighten it back on? Thing won't even let me listen to the radio without hearing that fugly loose dash noise, you can even move it with your bare hands on the passenger side! Please help, man, I really love my rare 850R. Thanks! Ps, got the passenger side headlight wiper loose too, it does t work, do you have any idea why? Thanks again!

Absolutely. If you try to pry up 1/2 of it, it will likely break in several pieces like the one I took off here. The plastic is old and brittle.
This video helped me today also... still at junkyard in rain taking out a good condition dashpad to replace the busted one in my T5R. Thx 😊 🙏

Hi took the dash pad off my 850 today. The only part I struggled with was the glove box. To get the arms to disconnect from the glove box cover was really difficult. Sad to say some plastics broke. Volvo plastic quality isnt great. Is there another way to disconnect the arms.
Not that I know of. I usually stick a small stuff item down the slot and pry a little while pulling them up and out.
Hello! I recently changed the dash pad, it's perfect except that the airbag light stayed on, the passenger airbag connector is well connected, any idea what I can do?
did you disconnect the battery before disconnecting the airbag like the video instructed?
If the car is '96 or newer you will need a reset tool that works through the OBD2 port. Some code readers will reset it. If the vehicle is '95 or older you can reset it with the OBD1 box under the hood.
Yes, i disconnect the battery but the light turn on, i'll try with a scan tool, thanks!!!
Jared Smith Small accessory screw driver. There is a plastic arm that often breaks.
Hello Robert, do you know if a 1999 S70 dashpad would fit a 1997 850 without modification? Thanks

Oh I love my dashboard too. :) How much do they cost?

My C70 Dash squeaks like a SOB. This seems like a design flaw overall. I think I'll just turn the radio up and run an open down pipe. lol.
