DJI NEO - TOO DARK TO FLY???

  • So I thought I would take my DJI Neo drone out for an evening flight, it has been gloomy all day, the drone acted rather un-DJI like, after some thoughts, I think the reason why it did what it did was because this little drone needs good day light to fly in.
I hope to take it out tomorrow when the light is better, I think it will fly just fine.

Hi @MadDogsandEnglishman, thank you for your feedback. The low ambient light may cause the vision system to function abnormally, affecting flight safety. We recommend that you fly it in good lighting conditions. Enjoy and safe flying!

Thank you for your information, I too believe it was down to the low light conditions. I will try it again later today or tomorrow, I'm sure it was either low light or a lack of satellite link.
I really do enjoy the DJI products, I have several, and I find them to be the best in what they do.
Thanks once again. Very kind of you to help.

@DanOpdal Hi, Dan. I just had a quick flight just now, and it worked perfectly. It's daylight here, so that has a factor.

I googled this for you attitude mode and below is the info it gives....
Attitude mode (ATTI mode) is a flight mode for DJI drones that disables GPS and optical sensors, and turns off most auxiliary modules. In ATTI mode, the drone's altitude is maintained using barometric pressure, but its position is not stabilized by GPS or Glonass. This means the drone can drift with the wind and lose altitude without pilot input.
    ATTI mode
    Features
No GPS or optical sensors, auxiliary modules are off
    Use cases
Soft pictures, flying in rooms, training
    Considerations
Requires more skill, drone can drift, especially in windy conditions
Here are some tips for flying in ATTI mode:
    Move to a better location
If your drone enters ATTI mode, try moving to a place with more GPS satellites.
    Descend
If your drone enters ATTI mode, descend below 30 feet to give the downward vision sensors a chance to stabilize the aircraft.
    Stay within line of sight
Always keep your drone within your line of sight and under control, especially when flying without GPS stabilization.

I think this little drone needs a good amount of light to fly, the Mini series fly almost anywhere.

  • @ati5238
    @ati5238 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Hi! The bottom optical flow sensor (camera) needs more light to properly see the area beneath the drone and maintain its position. This is a small camera located at the bottom of the drone between the two larger black infrared sensors. It seems that some dirt has gotten into the optical flow sensor. Try blowing it out with compressed air; cleaning it with anything else is almost impossible without damaging the lens. The lens is barely the size of a pinpoint. Be careful when attempting to clean it. This wouldn't be such a big problem if there were a proper GPS signal, but in a forest, there isn't. At low altitude, the drone holds its position with the bottom sensor by monitoring the pattern below, which needs to be sufficiently contrasting to provide a reference point for the drone's position. In low light, the lower the frame rate, the better, the resolution doesn't matter. The sensor and image processing algorithm can work with twice as much light if you choose 30fps instead of 60fps.

Hi. You are right, it needs more light to fly correctly. I will try it again tomorrow, I'm sure it will be fine in daylight.

Mine does it as well. A huge issue I seem to have is the Satellites dropping out. I will be locked onto 20 satellites one minute and then BOOM. it drops to none. Then it goes into altitude mode and starts drifting like yours. Seems to happen on sunny and grey days. When it is sunny the drone can still see good so you don't notice it as much. If it is a grey day though and loses satellites it does the exact same as yours. The drone seems to be really risky to fly unless the conditions are perfect.

    • @MadDogsandEnglishman

@JBC_cat I flew it earlier today, and it flew well (video in the making now) I believe for me it was a lightnissue. All went well. Hopefully, it will get an upgrade at some point, but I'm quite happy with it.

Unbelievable, you need to read the manual. Have you registered with the CAA ? You need an operators licence. ATTI mode means you have no gps lock. Therefore, you have to manually control it, no satellite lock due to tree cover. Find a clear open space, wait for the "home point updated" voice, and check the satellite symbol. The top right of the fly app is white. The drones down draught on the foliage caused the wild movement. Why post this video when you made so many mistakes ? Practice on a football pitch or other large open space. You'll then enjoy the excellent Neo and master flying it.

Andy is an excellent drone flyer! You should check his other videos, this is a new drone so only documenting his learning journey. Very unfair comments when he’s proved how skilful he’s been in many good posts previously. He has a great channel.!

    • @MadDogsandEnglishman
      @MadDogsandEnglishman  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

@mike57bryant Hi, I have a licence, insurance, and all the rest of it to fly legal. The main reason why the Neo did this was because of the lack of light. I had been working all day, and then the rain came down. It was quite late in the day when I took the drone out. It was starting to get dark. This drone needs more light for it to fly as it has a smaller sensor in its camera. I will try again, hopefully tomorrow. I'm sure it will be fine.
      Thanks.

it was in attitude mode and not locked in gps mode, maybe change the mode. Secondly 60fps requires more light, switch to 30fps when the light levels are low and the camera will cope better

Hi, Len. I hope all is well. Good points, I will need to go check, it should be all good, I took it out for it's first flight yesterday (in the dry) and it work brilliantly, so I'm just a little puzzled why it flew as it did this evening. I t has been very gloomy all day today, so the only thing I can think, is that it doesn't like flying in darkened conditions, which makes it tricky when flying in a forest. I hope to take it out tomorrow for another flight (weather pending)
Talks soon, Len and thanks for watching.

Can’t fly the drone in low light, it even says it in the manual and it will even give you verbal notification! If you use the drone the way you’re supposed to use the drone, there’s nothing wrong with it so this in my opinion is user error 100%
