- What's it really like to sail the Mediterranean? Total, utter frustration! But it's beautiful and the food is delish.

Editing one single video takes us two days minimum and our equipment keeps failing due to the salty environment (cameras, microphones, SD cards, hard drives, cables,...). A small contribution x month goes a long way in helping us keep our production afloat.
Living your peace. Simply splendid couple.
Thanks so much, Christopher!
Check out the 1950s style iconic photo of Ryan (if were in black and white) at 14:57. Smooooth😀 Thanks for sharing yet another lovely episode with us, loved it! FW&FS⛵️👍🏻👍🏻
We didn’t even notice! Thank you 😊 Always a pleasure to read your comments, Michael 🤗
I am so looking forward to getting over there! We are anchored in Gibraltar now and heading straight to Sicily in a few days!
If you're heading East, then you're in luck buddy. Westerlies will prevail in the Western Med from now on.
But they are generated by Low pressure systems finding their way inside the Med. So don't take it lightly as it can get pretty bumpy.
Fesh Fesh Sailing we are preparing for a horrible sail and a very wet ride. 😖
@@RiggingDoctor Count your blessings..🌞
Stay healthy
@@feshfeshsailing A llittle late for this season,I wish you good winds and no storms
Nice video the weather will always tease you. As you know here in the UK there's a technical term for a warm sunny day following two wet days. Monday Lol
😂 good one! Totally remember wet weekends desperately trying to do some rock climbing on slippery rock 😂
Nice video (again), your notion about Med. sailing is because you were at a"schedule". Been sailing the med for years, and if your life is not restricted by any form of schedule, or notion of having to get there by lunch.. It's just fab.
Looking like when we where there three weeks ago. Absolutely beautiful. Back in Norway we have snow now. Really want back but this videos are a great substitute :)
How cool that you were there last month! Awesome. Thanks for watching :)
Really enjoy these. In film production, lotta money is spent to replicate ambient sound. Love that you keep the actual sound-just good filmmaking and storytelling. Wonder if you’ve thought about approaching the makers of your camera, computers, etc for sponsorship or equipment donations? I’m broke, all I can do is clap and say, “More!”
Ahh... yes. This brings back memories of the fluky and frustrating winds of the Med. No wind, too much wind, perfect wind...subject to change to either too much or zero wind at any moment. Full sails up, REEF REEF REEF! Then motoring... then full sails... then REEEEEF! And repeat. ;) haha.
And those are the good days! 😂 👍
So congrats to the marriage, great move! Best Piet
Thanks a lot, Piet! 😊
Great vid team. Totally sympathise with you on the rolly anchorage front. We seem to have had our fair share recently too! ⚓️
Cheers. Yeah, it can be tough after a while.
We totally share your frustration!! Too much wind ....too little...wrong direction 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Oh the Med , keeps you guessing always, at least you wont get bored , take care
Not one bit 😊👋
Just found your channel. Sorry I missed it earlier. I was initially interested because I was myself really interested in the Heavenly Twins when it was first introduced and so nearly bought one for weekend sailing. It is a really nice little cat with a lot of accommodation for her length but no greyhound! In the end got something else.
But I see that by now you have moved on. Sad but understandable.
I’ve watched the first few episodes and respect your sensible approach and great attitude and I’m surely going to continue to watch you. Plus I’ll have a great time binge viewing to catch up. Good luck & have great adventures.
👍🏻
Cheers Bertie! So glad to have a HT fan here :)
We have a whole 2 seasons on this channel sailing the HT, so that should give you a good idea of what it's like to sail and do boat work on one of these little boats. The videos of season 1 aren't the best quality - we had no idea what we were doing! So forgive us for that.
We sailed Kittiwake from the UK to Sardinia, so HTs are sturdy and safe boats. We hope you enjoy the channel.
Let us know if you end up buying a HT :) Fair winds, Elena and Ryan
Would or could a hammock work in a rolly anchorage, possibly with something extra to dampen the swinging amplitude since it is more likely than not that the hanging point is nowhere near the "neutral point", if you will, of the boat? In an ideal case a one or two person hammock would remain immobile while the boat around it rolls and thrashes about...
Just north of Sicily is the volcanic island of Stromboli. Absolutely amazing, well worth the detour if you pass that way again. 😎
Yes, we got some cool shots of it in the previous episode. Unfortunately we were in Vulcano for a little more than 24 hours due to the crazy winds we got ☹️ All those islands look incredible and hiking up Vulcano was a highlight of our year!
Sailing Kittiwake Just watched it. Fabulous. Stromboli erupts every 15- 20 minutes. In the daytime it just sounds like mild thunder, but at night you get to see the magma shooting almost a 1,000 metres into the night sky. Breathtaking! 😎
Yes, we were gutted we didn’t have more time in the Aeolian islands. Considering Stromboli erupted a couple of months later and the smoke was so far reaching, we felt lucky we didn’t get too close though ☹️
Completely feel your frustrations guys! Either 30 knots or none at all! Beautiful scenery though, loved it xx
Yes, it’s a lovely spot 😊 xxx
I sailed there about 7 times but there was never enough wind to get the full distance westbound ore eastbound on the toe of italy
Yep, you gotta motor :(
Glad to see you guys crossing the strait of Messina as Odysseus once did. Since you like cultural info, according to Homers Odyssey, Odysseus crossing that strait had to face two gigantic monsters Scylla(sounds familiar??) and Charybdis. Scylla(which in Greek means female dog or bitch), was a six headed monster on the one side and Charybdis a whirlpool on the other side. Hence the idiom "Between Scylla and Charybdis". I guess sailors in ancient times must have encountered some really rough waters there. Keep them coming guys!
'Between a rock and a hard place' would be the modern equivalent.
Nice vid again. Those swordfish boats looked bizarre, with the impossibly long harpoon scaffolding up forward. Wonder how they tie up to a dock?
Cheers Chris! We’re not sure 🤔 We guess they either stern moor, go alongside a fishing quay, or on a mooring ball? 🤔
@@SailingKittiwake Either way they must take up a lot of room!
Indeed! 😁
Sounds like a dastardly way to catch fish.harpoon them while asleep.its just not cricket.
Great video enjoyed it many thanks
Cheers!
great video as usual
Cheers John!
Please please stop the music when you’re talking
I hope you don’t get discouraged. It’s still very beautiful
Nope, we were laughing 😝
Another very informative video. Compulsive watching.... Sail Safe. Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.
Oh wow! Thanks guys ☺️🤗
great video enjoyed!
Thanks Philip!
Do either off you have sailing qualification,s. ??
Once again I am reminded of just how much more SKUA's size makes a huge difference in the comfort for you kids sailing. She is so much more "stout" when it comes to taking on heavier seas and, even while motoring she is so quiet! Was this posting from prior to your wedding or am I just mixed up......again? Either way kids, just loving your journey!
Wow kids, that was a very quick reply considering you are half way around the world!
Thanks Edward! Yes, totally. We feel so lucky to have Skua.
Well, it's complicated because we had "2 weddings." One was simply signing the papers in the UK with 2 witnesses and one was a symbolic ceremony with a dinner celebration in Sardinia. In this video, we have done the official signing but haven't had a wedding celebration with our families yet :)
It's 6pm here and we're winding down after doing boat work and real life work by reading everyone's comments :)
@@SailingKittiwake Yes, we are just after 9 AM here in sunny California, looking forward to a nice Veterans Day of remembrance for all of our service men & women who served and Do serve to keep America safe. Hope you kids can get some well earned rest and wake up ready to tackle another day aboard your beautiful home!
Good dy, Which version of opencpn are you using?
Whatever version was available in spring 2018. Sorry, it's an old video.
Looking good 💐😉
Aw thanks Tony!
Missed another interesting event? How about you fix an all aspects camera to the stern looking over the boat?
This is what I mean. See how Patrick does it.....
th-cam.com/video/NUTim_7PVJQ/w-d-xo.html
That takes planning, which is not doable when stuff like this happens.
We've done it many times before and follow Patrick avidly.
If we know we'll be docking or putting up a sail or do something interesting in advance, then we do it. If, like in this case, we think nothing interesting is going on, then we don't mount or set the camera off (each gigabyte takes space on our limited hard drives). It doesn't look like it, but filming these silly videos takes huge amounts of planning and brain power.
Sailing Kittiwake - thx for taking the time to reply. You can have it set to write over and over on a smaller size m.stick and just download a short time after the incident. Understand either way.
Cant belive it. Your old heavenly twins is on Ebay.
Ah yes she's been for sale since this summer. The new owners couldn't make the sailing life work out for them - it's not for everyone. We hope our videos show that it's not all fun and bikinis and making a living from a sailboat is extremely challenging.
Loving the dramatic uplifting music
Still May? And Aetna erupts in July. I wonder what will happen.
Any plans for a electric windlass? Those sword boat ships are crazy. Be safe out there.
Nope, this one is unbreakable and uses no power 😊💪 Cheers!
Why do I think this was not typed by the person who does the cranking? :)
Oh you'll see me cranking too in future videos, don't you worry. It's not hard at all, just boring.
Work as a marine electrician in the 80s and spent lots of time repairing power winches. Bad switches, corroded connections, smoked motors and bad wires. Most my sailing friends had manually run winches and spent 10 or 20 once or twice a year greasing and cleaning them.
KEVIN Carrick exactly our thoughts! We grease it twice a year and it never fails. We managed to get a welder to extend the teeth and now it’s almost like new 😊👍
New subscriber. 😀😀😀
Yaaay! Welcome 😊🤗 We hope you enjoy the channel 🤞
When will you cross the pond
When we're ready, maybe late winter.
Now would have been the time to relate the story/myth of Scylla and Charybdis where the story tells of the impossible situation of being between the devil and the deep blue sea. Greek mythology sited them on opposite sides of the Strait of Messina between Sicily and Calabria, on the Italian mainland. Scylla was rationalized as a rock shoal (described as a six-headed sea monster) on the Calabrian side of the strait and Charybdis was a whirlpool off the coast of Sicily. They were regarded as maritime hazards located close enough to each other that they posed an inescapable threat to passing sailors; avoiding Charybdis meant passing too close to Scylla and vice versa. (Wikipedia).
One of the most beautiful video and still watching shukren .
So no engine in the Med is not a good idea? :) I am so jealous of you guys. :)
Probably not 😅
The Pardey's did it. Just don't be on a schedule.
Med is hard to sail and the models are quite often wrong.
Yup, we finally came to terms with it and admit it 😁
I'm a salty old sea dog. NEVER trust a weather forecast, mates.
👍👍👍👍Thanks
You missed out the best bit -Vesuvius!
Been there 😊 We chose Greece this year and don’t regret it 😍
Music FAR TOO LOUD compared to the narration but nice video. xx
Where exactly? The 2 seconds where we talk on the radio? On our laptops the levels are great.
@@SailingKittiwake The music gets louder as you call the CG and peaks to very loud at 3:40 then dies away again. Try listening using headphones and see what it is like. As I said, lovely informative and fun video save for that. xx
@David Wheatley is right. On good headphones it either hurts the ears or I can barely hear your voice.
Why u need sunglasses when talking to people?
To stop the bright sun going in our eyes
@@SailingKittiwake Just moments to talk to the camera without the sunglasses. Think people like to see eyes and your followers will... whatever...Do what you want and feel free! All the best to u.
Thanks Jan. We had this complaint before and tried filming without sunglasses. Then some people complained that we were squinting too much 😂 So now we just protect our eyes, which is very important when you’re on the sea and the sun is reflected on the water.
@@SailingKittiwake Yes I know how the sun impact when at the ocean - it is shining from all over. Just be comfortable and protect your eyes
:)
I really appreciate your channel it’s great. But please consider stopping the music. I’ve no idea why sailings channels play this constantly. There nothing wrong with the sounds of life. Got to be easier to edit too :-).
Thanks, we're glad you appreciate it! We prefer to make videos our way though, which is with music.
Too much background music.
There's plenty of other channels to watch if you don't like it. We weren't asking for feedback.
Kill the music pretty lady so I can hear what
you are saying.
Sorry!
Your music is nice but way too loud. Bit hard to listen to what you say at times.
