    Howy friends, FYI, we are located in Oakland Ca.
    Below are all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon’s website.

    Kirk and Jason Giordano Plastering Inc.
    A comment often asked with this video is about using bonding agents,
    Don’t dilute bonding agents such as Quikrete or Weld-Crete when applying basecoats or concrete.
    Remember, all bonding agents applied are only as good as the surface they’re applied to.
    For example, the bonding agent won’t be as effective if a surface is not clean enough to eat off.
    Does someone need a bonding agent for clean bricks, cement concrete, or blocks? No, but again it has to be clean, dust-free, and not painted.
    Note; No stucco wire is necessary. In fact, stucco netting is counterproductive.
    I’m giving some tips on resurfacing bricks with cement stucco in this video.
    Last tip, scratch coats are not necessary for any porous walls, including, as in this video, bricks, Cinder blocks, Cement Blocks, Terra Cotta walls, or any other cementitious substrate. Instead, fill to the correct thickness; if you need to apply more than one coat, do so.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good evening fix it, I'd stop doing that, if you waterproof the first coat you have sealed it, In order for the second coat to adhere it need to adhere by suction or what we call a mechanical bond, you need a porous first coat that you make moist with water to accept the second coat which is wet.
      If you waterproof the first coat, the second coat will not adhere forever unless you apply a bonding agent over the first coat as it's now sealed.

Some of the buildings are 3 to 400 years old .Did you know that a lot of the castles and statley homes in the middle ages were white lime washed and plastered 100 percent outside and in, most , if not all of this render has washed off a long time ago now to reveal the stone. Carlos my friend, ask and ye shall receive.
      When I started plastering many years ago, I wanted to be considered cool and not a wuss. So I didn't wear gloves for a few days.
      Goofy move, I couldn't open my fingers without the bleeding from the finger joints, plus they were like sandpaper, even too manly for me, as when I tried to sleep they keep sticking the covers, that was some annoying sh!t. Plus my wife at that time said, "baby, don't touch me with those sandpaper hands" ouch.💃
      I only had to learn that lesson once.
      I slept with vaseline on my hands in sandwich bags for a week, then they were as good as new.
      Did the lye enter my bloodstream transdermally?
      Who knows, I was happy to open my hands again without the pain, plus I was young and didn't don't worry about stuff like whats was in my bloodstream besides blood.🍻

    Sorry for the education question, but I'm seeking advising regarding a chimney top with a 1/4 inch or so, stucco parged directly over the brickwork. Some areas of the plaster bond have failed, and many areas vibrate when pounded. I'm not sure if I can reasonably expect to remove all of the stucco, even areas that still have a solid bond with the brick faces. I'm happy to go at it with a variety of chisels, but am a little concerned about either some rough stucco remaining, or brick faces failing during bonded stucco removal. It'll be painted afterwards, so brick faces can be discolored.
    I'll send a portion of future lotto winnings for any help, and I'm expecting to win, like really big!

      Hi Jerry, give it the old tap test, hit it lightly with a hammer, you will here if its separating, not sure of the sound, tap the concrete sidewalk and listen for that solid noise, now tap that chimney again.
      There no rule that says, if you can't afford to remove all that loose stuff you go to jail. Remove what you can, and if it sounds secure, leave it alone.

    Thanks a lot for these. I have about a dozen spalled bricks on a corner of my house near or at grade, and pulling them seems unnecessarily intensive, especially given the kind of hidden location. (The area had a bush keeping things humid for years before we owned it, but most of the bricks didn't succumb.) After much reading about damp proofing bricks below grade with Type M, I found your videos, and I may have to give it a try myself. Masons in my area refuse any job less than $2,000, so I may be stuck doing this myself.

      Evening Raw Dog, LOL,
      stucco and plaster both have Lye in it.
      Lye will burn, eat, disintegrate stuff, hands, and face are no problemo for Lye to beat or eat up.
      A story, I was about 20, and going to a party, was dressed up and excited, my piece of crap car wouldn't start, I used jumper cables when I tried to attach them to my car battery my battery exploded, it sent battery acid all over me, I thought, damn, now I have to wash my face and hair, as I was in a hurry.
      Did that fast, then stuck my friend's battery in my crap car.
      The next day, my shirt and pants had holes all over them.
      I thought to myself, man, good thing I took the time out to wash my face and hands, as I almost didn't.😉
      That's what Lye in stucco also does, Lye is no joke and takes no prisoners.🍻

    Just wondering, in Ireland when plastering brick houses, we oftentimes use lime plaster/render, because like you said bricks absorb moisture, and because of that, the Portland cement stops the bricks from releasing the moisture, causing the inside to be damp, and encouraging rot. Lime plaster however is breathable and so allows the moisture to be absorbed and evaporated, just wondering is there a mix of Portland cement you use to combat this, maybe it's not a problem in the region where your plastering this, it's only a chimney so its probably not going to pose the same problems as a gable wall, just curious as to what methodology you guys use, when plastering a brick wall to avoid dampness

    Sorry for the long post
    I have 2 jobs coming up that they want some kind of mortar wash over the brick. The first one is a 6ft tall chimney on a 45 year old house above roof so only about 72sqft. The mortar looks to be deteriorating and is a deep raked with cracks and holes which we think is allowing water in and getting on the ceiling. The flashing is copper and was installed correctly about 5 years ago(it's not causing the water leaks). There was an older flashing about 2 foot up on the brick that we think is another place water is getting in. This chimney is in bad shape with mildew and silicone caulk in several places and they don't have a lot of money to spend on it,(I'm limited on the amount of prep work they can afford so I need something that will stick) she is a teacher and he is a county sheriff. I was considering using a white thin set like is used to lay tile to a floor(going with the kind that allows tile to be laid over almost anything, it's my thinset of choice when I want to put new tile over old tile, sheet vinyl, or any other non typical substrate) .....will that work?
    The second job is a whole house mortar wash but we are thinking of making it look like stucco, the house had a bad foundation and there are lots of big cracks in the mortar and brick so it's a cover up to keep from totally rebricking the house....not sure yet which product or exactly what the final look is they are wanting. To get stucco products in Mississippi you have to be a licensed stucco installer and I not interested in doing enough to get licensed ....
    I've never been afraid to try anything once and love having youtube because with a little research I can do just about anything.....once ....yes sometimes I find out that's not something I want to do again...

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy Handy Hippie dude, on the chimney I would suggest you first pressure wash, next apply a bonding agent such as in this video then skim coat with stucco I have not tried tile grout to skim coat with, then finally apply an acrylic stucco finish with sealer first, this will seal the chimney so it stops leaking, plus look great.
      Apply Dry-vit, Carsons, or BMI or even Stucco-flex if they can afford it.
      The is a permanent fix, sorry I can't recommend any other repair except one that works.
      If they can't afford this, try DIY, pressure washing and Painting with a quality paint and primer, the brick will still show but they need this watertight more than pretty, or mold will develop inside the home. Not Good.
      On the whole, house what you want to do is apply a color cost, type in how to apply a color coat, detailed videos will appear.
      Not certain what a Mortar wash is but sound like a parge coat which is colored cement plaster that is painted on something, I would advise against this, just go to google images and type this in to see why.
      Lastly, anyone can purchase bags of color coat cement stucco at home depot, lowes or any plastering yard, you do not need a license, all these stores are happy to take your money in exchange for their product license or not.

    8:00 its so weird how stucco is the mixture of lime, powdered marble and plaster, everywhere else, particularly in italy, where it was used since renaissance times to mimic marble adding pigments as well, but is sand, lime and portland cement in the us, that last mixture is just plain "cement" in europe

      Howdy Wyatt dude, somewhat accurate.
      The reality is with the last nine years with about 800 video uploads, I have had 35,000 comments according to google analytics that comes with this channel.
      49% say, good job, 50% ask for advice, and the 1 percent who criticize or say I suck, "make my day," sounds goofy, I realize.

    About the bounding agent Kirk. I do not have this product here in quebec, well creet or wall creet? Giroux and Maçonex (brick supplier here) sell an acrylic pretty pure called A-330 that I pour in my stucco mixture sometimes to give it more elasticity when I do the ruff coat or a repair patch. It is white and turns blue-purple when applied. I never do put it on my ruff surface like you do. But I guess I should. When I work on concrete, after having made sure the wall is saturated with water and in suction mode, I apply a mixture I make. Type 10 cement portland, acrylic A-330, and water, mixed with like thick paint. Respecting my suction mode on the wall, I apply my bounding mixture ( my help does) with a large brush and I start applying my first coat as soon as my bounding is also in suction mode. I have Never seen any entrepreneur here beside me doing this method I learned from my master plaster teacher deceased today.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy Michael dude, we have one product here called Sika latex fortifier it's used similarly to what you're doing, instead of mixing with water you add it the sika latex.
      however. I have not tried it.
      As a rule, I apply my bonding agents to clean surfaces, if I apply in the bonding agents sold here, the method of adding it to our stucco mix would dilute the bonding agent so that it would be renderered uselless.
      Best wishes my fellow plasterer in Quebec.
