    For immediate bids, send pictures to Jay or myself at our sites below.
    www.StuccoPlas... Kirk’s website.
    www.GiordanoPl... Jason’s Website.
    Howdy, all in this video, we’re explaining while demonstrating how to improve the look of, CMU, or cinder blocks.
    This same stucco method also works for stone or rock walls; even the red clay Terra-Cotta was used about 80 to 100 years ago.
    If you want to see how Terra Cotta blocks are covered with cement stucco and made 4 times as strong as usual, click here. • Stucco over TerraCotta...
    Terra-cotta block walls are still used in many parts of the world today.
    FYI, no chemical bonding was necessary, "Weld-create- nor Quickrete," as the natural mechanical bond was more effective. New stucco can be applied over the cementitious Blocks.
    Note it's necessary to keep the blocks moist with a water hose to achieve permanent adhesion.
    If anyone thinks, man, ole Kirk is working that man to death, that’s bull.
    Edgar Velasquez is my nephew. I didn’t realize he would spoil the crap out of me, bring the stucco, and drop it on my hawk.
    This shaved an hour off our day and saved my knees and back.
    Ratios for sand and stucco mixing by the book.
    How much sand is for each coat of stucco?
    Scratch coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 2-1/4 to 4 parts sand, brown coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 3 to 5 parts sand, and finish coats are 1 part cement to 1-1/2 to 3 parts sand.
    We often mix 3 parts of sand with every part of cement plaster.
    The cement plaster we use is any Portland cement, such as Quikrete or Sakrete.
    Note, Rapid Set or Greencore are sold at Home Depot but don’t need added sand, just water.

    Kirk, Question for you....First, excellent video. You seem like a natural "Instructor".My contractor applied stucco over smooth concrete (against my wishes) and as I expected, the stucco delaminated. Is there a bonding agent I can apply or do you recomment rouging up the existing surface first? It's a small area as we step out the double doors, maybe 15 SF max. Jack Cassidy P.E.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Howdy Jack, in order for the stucco to apply to smooth concrete it has to be super clean, or etched or a bonding agent applied.
      I suggest if it's come off, use a wire brush and a water hose, to clean off excess dust and film from stucco, then apply a bonding agent. Then you're ready for stucco.

      Good evening Mark Souter, No, you have to pressure wash all painted surfaces extremely well as nothing stick to dust or dirty surface, and then apply a bonding agent directly to the walls, never in the mix, as this would dilute the bonding agent rendering it useless.
      Bonding agents can be Larsons, Weld Crete, or Quikrete sold at HD or lowes.😉

    We are amid a new pool build and had the PB's team put in a CMU wall. The wall was supposed to be stucco, although, upon research, they may have used surface-bonding cement. Whatever they used, we can see the block lines beneath the material's surface. We plan to have the wall painted, and I'm curious if we should expect the paint will cover the outlines of the blocks? Or do you think we should speak to the builder? We're already seeing an area where the wall is cracking, so I'm generally concerned. Do you have any recommendation of how to bring this up or what to say in case we're met with the "oh that's normal" response in order to keep us quiet.

I learned enough to do some small contracting of Shower surrounds, ready for scratch and green. I ripped them out and set them up for Scratch and ready for Tiles. Made a lot more bringing in the "Second Plaster" Guy on my Jobs after his full day or on Saturdays. Learned a lot, I was a kid but working with men. all served me well to cash flow my BA and Masters Degree, hustling side jobs and doing window installs in Stucco and plaster CA Bungalows I ripped them out set the new windows and readied for the Plaster to come in behind me. Kirk, I have just recently discovered your youtube channel. And boy am I glad I did. I need your advice on what products and the ratios i should use on my retaining walls. I live in Massachusetts and the house was built in 1950 and the walls (poured concrete form boards
    ) have a heavy dash finish on them. Most of the original finish has either over time deteriorated or i have chiseled off. I have done some patch work, wire brushed and pressure washed them ready for the heavy dash finish. Over the last few weeks you have given me the confidence i need to tackle this job and i must say very much entertained me at the same time. I can tell you really know your business because i too have been in a trade (autobody) for over 30 years. Hope you have the time to respond. My best to you and your lovely family, William

    Love to see how this looks in few years after a good rain. The block joints will show because you didn't attach wire to the block and or use a fiber mesh for anti fracture. Yes we know how long you have been doing stucco, but it doesn't mean you have been doing it right! DELAMINATION have you heard of that one? Well I guess it keeps other people in business to come behind and fix things.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Howdy, O T, that's just jealousy talking plus you are sort of ignorant, but I won't hold that against you.
      Fiberglass mesh tape would do nothing to stop any exterior cinder or concrete block or concrete retaining walls from moving.
      A far as stucco netting, this has no benefit, in fact, it's counterproductive, instead two porous cementitious materials will adhere permanently as long as there is an excellent mechanical bond, this means misting the existing walls with the proper amount of water then applying your stucco, they adhere by suction.
      Of course, the wall has to be free of any and all dust.
      FYI, Using words out of context does not make you a plasterer, it just makes you sound foolish.

    • @ot1201
      @ot1201 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I said attaching wire which means Diamond lath or others call it expandable metal. Then I use a slurry of full acrylic thin set with a sponge or brush to get the mechanical bond to the wall. At this point I then burn in my mud to the wall and wire. In this application even if the wall moves, or expansion and contraction happens I am still bonded to the lath. I am not saying you don't know what you are doing. Obviously you have talent, but individually we can't know everything. Just for the record, I do tile and have been floating walls for quite a long time. Additionally I have done plenty of different stucco applications. Since day one in tile, my boss taught us to NEVER float directly to block, brick or stone on a wall without wire. She was right. Lastly if you want to see an example of what I am referring to. Have a look at Robin Williams retaining wall by China beach (Sea Cliff) after a good rain. That's exactly my point and I see it all over the U.S and Europe. People doing it the wrong way.

    Hi Kirk. Long time fan here.
    Silly question, but do all of you guys always wear a white dress shirt when you're working? How many white shirts do you have and whats the reason for wearing it while working? Thanks!

    Thanks so much for this video! Great work. Can you do this same process over a painted retaining wall made of cinderblock?
