    Nice to see homemade trusses. 25 years ago I made 11 trusses for my 16' x 20' garage/ workshop for $81.00 and to order them would have cost over $400.00.

    Good work ! If you extend upstair floor joist about 12" each side of the bottom wall that's will give you the overhang for the soffite , then the second storie wall will seat right on top of the lower wall ...

    • @kenskarpentry
      @kenskarpentry  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. That could work. The I joists would need squash blocks on top of the exterior walls or else over time they would collapse. Definitely a workable situation.

    I bought my trusses at a place that custom make them they where 44 ft long , they use some nice wood for making them . Had a neighbor with a boom truck we set them all in one day so much quicker than stick building and actually a lot stronger.

    • @kenskarpentry
      @kenskarpentry  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! I buy 90 per cent of mine premade. These were small trusses so it was quicker and easier to just build them.

    Hi Ken, I've just discovered your videos and I love them...... No BS, no endless talking about "me, me, me" like so many other YT channels. Just good, honest hard work by a fella who clearly enjoys his work and that same man selflessly sharing priceless information that take a lifetime to learn. I have little question - I'm (hopefully) starting a job some that will involve me running a small cabin build. It'll be a maximum of 258sq feet (24sq meters here in the EU) downstairs floor space (I think it's some planning dodge). It'll roughly 13' x 19' (4m x 6m) interior dimensions. I'm thinking of doing a gambrel roof design. I'm just wondering what sort pitch you run for your gambrel roof designs? Is it overly critical structurally what sort of pitch is run or is it mostly aesthetics? Thanks Ken and keep up the good work. Also what sort camera do you use?

    • @kenskarpentry
      @kenskarpentry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I built steal rafters screw together had a jig engineered they were big they needed a crane to put them up it was huge you could put two apartments in the space on top it had 3 or 4 two car doors brick front steal siding a pallet almost 2 of sollar pannels on the back side geothermal heat you could fit 12 cars and an office on the end bay with side entry door and window.the out side wall was the thicker steal studs and a ft or so it had another steal stud wall next to the outer wall thinner studs like comerical.fiberbord yellow on the out side screwed to the steel hat channel under the board.house rap.the roof had a breathable membrane nothing flammable.o point building.it was very energy eficient.two block drive way .steal siding and roof.and the house built the same way one story for the house.ceater lake in.had to be a million dollar realestate when done.seven to ten acers.with lake access.the solar pannels were 300 watts each .a lot of them.im glad they had that crane semi to put tbe rafters up they were big and heavy .it was nice to have built soming that nice and different.

    How do you get away with building your own trusses? Don’t you have to provide some documentation to the local code enforcement for snow loads? Engineer stamp? As a builder myself I can see that your trusses are every bit as good and strong as a manufacturers truss but most towns want an engineered plan for them
