I just googled mansard roof and it says this is one of the hardest roofs to build due to intricate design. Testament to Dan’s endurance in this chateau build. My son is a roof framer in Australia so I’m particularly interested in this part of the build. A nail gun will make all the difference when it arrives. Well done Dan 👏🏻
is it endurance or point blank madness! naa not madness, determination to restore a heck of a historical building! thats what it is! 😊 now mad would be building it from the ground up entirely!! 😂😂😂
He does it the simplest way with one vertical supporting layer and rafters. The framing is much more complex when you build only one structural layer. Because then you have angled tenon and mortises and it has to give structural strength.
Those bird mouth cuts in your chevon uprights are cut way too skinny. There is little to no lateral support the way they are cut. They will be very susceptible to splitting and breaking off. To support the whole width of the member you could place a horizontal 2"x4" between the chevron uprights and the wall. That way the full thickness of the chevron uprights will be supported. Now I know that they are virtually upright and a lot of the load is vertical, but during high winds there is a the propensity for side and slewing loads that will at the very least will rock back and forth and loosen stuff up and be a squeaky miserable place to be. Something to make it firm and tight, able to resist anything mother nature throws at it would be the way to go and very easy and inexpensive to accomplish now.

P.s. if you get any Christmas ornaments back I would love to buy one. Please make a list for those who missed out the first time it was offered.oh put my name at the top and let me or us know .
Well, this was a pleasant surprise ! The roof is looking great and coming together quickly. Dan, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your beautiful boys.
Sorry to hear about the ornament and refunds….hoping viewers who are involved will send a donation in replacement. You’ve got an amazing community behind every screen. That roof will be done in no time Dan! You’re progressing so much. I can see it clearly now. It’s going to be beautiful
Well done Dan. I’m sure people realise how flat out you are. This roofed area will make a tremendous difference to you and is an achievement in itself. God bless and a Happy New Year.
By using a wire you use the most reliable way to determine the length and angles and to saw them correctly in one go.🙂
You are amazing Dan. I didn’t expect to be watching you on Boxing Day. I know it doesn’t mean a thing in France. lol.
We got our ornament…it’s perfect…thanks..Happy Holidays from Canada! From Carter & Arnold
Look at all the time it take to do this its amazing....I hope integrity is key and the ones who get that kewl tree charm which was sold out so fast. pays UP.
Dan you show everybody , that a person can do anything when you set your mind to do something ,never give up. I look forward to your “daily visit to the world”
I can’t tell you how impressed I am that you’re building a mansard roof. You see these complicated roof beams in really old attics, but now we see how they get to looking so cool! A New Year’s Miracle for sure (never mind about missing Christmas)!
Well, there are 12 days of Christmas, so in my book he has until January 6th, midnight. Not that he should be working that late!
For some reason, and I have been watching ALL of the videos, this may be my favorite. Oh and that view!!!
I am loving the roof progress, never seen one of this design from start to finish so l'm really interested.
Loved the sunset light and the owl hoot near the end. What a fantastic place, project and people!
Those ornaments sold out way too quickly, congratulations to all the lucky owners. ❤❤❤
Everything you do is fun to watch! You've done a great job on everything you've done so far. Excellent progress!!!
It is so comforting to see you placing your roof together, piece by piece, tap by tap, whether by hand or sledgehammer! Kinda similar feeling I get when I place jigsaw puzzles together, not as strenuous!
Cheers from Juneau Alaska 🌟
Thoroughly enjoying watching the roof go up. I know it’s the festive season so I get you’ll need time out with the boys, but please try and keep the videos coming, cannot wait to see the roof complete on this side.
It's amazing how just the beginning of the structure makes such a difference and provides an idea on how the roof will look like.
The frame is coming along great! This is why I love buying old homes!!! Bringing them back to its former glory!! Lots of love from Tennessee!!
It looks amazing - you've shown your demolition skills, and the roof is showing you to be a craftsman too.
It's hard to believe that just a few years ago you knew very little about big construction projects. You never cease to amaze me Dan. Keep up the great work!!!
Truly mad respect to you for doing this. I thought you were (way) over your head but thought ‘so what. If it takes this guy forever to keep it from raining inside this ruin, I’ll watch. He a likable guy.” But honestly? It’s ridiculously impressive.
Lovely to see it all getting there.i got a refund so I'll do just that and buy you a few coffees thank you 😊
Am excited to see how the roof comes together. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Take care on those heights!
DAN YOU ARE MORE THAN A ROLE MODEL, YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION TO OVER 400 THOUSAND EAGER VIEWERS. ONWARDS AND UPWARDS YOUNG MAN. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✅✅✅✅✅✅✅I honestly enjoyed every single episode from when you joined LaLande as Dan the gardener 👍👍👍👍👍
It is so nice when everything just works and goes together I feel for you on this one, brilliant day and congrats for getting this far xx
What!!! Dan, its Christmas but this is so lovely! I can see the old window frames already! You are a hard working man! Keep save please. Hugs from the Netherlands
Why is it so good seeing a saw cut cleanly through wood? Am I the only one who likes watching this?
No, you are not, Dan has many fans. It is odd, however, but being the only girl in woodwork class many years ago at school, I understand the obsession of watching Dan put this build together--somewhat. 🤨 Looking good.
@@janerob1009 I wanted to take woodwork at school but wasn't allowed. Only boys could at my old school. This was 60 years ago. I had to do stupid needlework which I hated. Never forgotten!!
Great work Dan! Glad you will have help tomorrow!
Congrats Dan! You are ending the year with phenomenal achievements. You can be so proud 👏
You are magnificent Dan the Man! Not to mention DRIVEN. Have a great New Year’s Eve.
It’s brilliant to see this roof coming together. You must be working from drawings if not it would be amazing if you’re working from memory. Great Work!
The ornament arrives safely and is now our Christmas tree decoration. Thanks a lot.❤
This Chateau will be one of the most unique and incredible architecture, not to mention the groundworks and landscaping...it promises to be one of a kind! Rock on! Love watching it all come together piece by piece, with care and graft! Cheers and best for 20241
Hi Dan, I got your ornament today (in Atlanta, USA). I like it a lot and put it on my tree.
Looking Great Dan! When it's done right it takes time. It is coming together beautifully 👍
Ooohhh so glad you mentioned about the ornaments. I did get a refund e-mail, but if mine does arrive i will absolutely send the money through. 😊
Thank you Dan for the Vlog🎄. And the Ornament is comming for Chrismas. It's beautiful.
It’s good to have lofty goals, but you still have gotten an impressive amount done on the roof.
Excitement in the air. Mighty Man Dan! Beautiful work.
I cannot believe how much you've accomplished Dan. Just please don't get hurt. As a woman most of my jobs at work and home were physical by choice but now after five back surgeries I'm a mess that can barely walk plus other stuff. I can't drive anymore which I truly hate. So don't destroy your body before you move into your Chateau.
Sorry to hear that. Do try gentle stretches.
Wow Dan . You are doing amazing work on your roof . Take care xx
I’m in a 4 story, 1850’s mansard, seems to be 42’x42’.. fixing all aspects of a 35 yr old renovation.
I was in it when it was converted to 2 apartments, with completely separate frame systems, and witnessed the orig. mansard from inside the roof framing at the peak.
With completely finished plaster walls, and 10ft ceilings, it’s a wonder to see.👀
