My talking during a roll consists of “shit” “fuck” “noooo” and giggling like Johnny Knoxville when I’m in danger. All followed by “Thanks man” and a hand shake.

Not just saying something funny either, for example Chewie mentioned shit talking with his training partner. It was evident that the two of them are okay with the smack talk, but if your partner isn't, then you shouldn't engage in that type of thing while training in your gym. In my gym, a moderate amount of chatter is pretty standard. Only once did a newer student announce to our instructor she "tapped everyone in class." They were politely told such talk is taboo and they apologized. Sometimes it's a lack of self awareness. Most of the time the chat is after a roll, a brief "that was a nice sweep/ you really caught me w/ that sub." Respectful, no ego. Other times it's more like, "can you show me how you did that/ what can I do from that position?" Genuine, trying to learn from the roll. Personally, I talk. And this video won't change that. When I roll with lower belts, I let them know at the start they can work what they like, I'm not here to smash them. I let them advance according to their skill level. I will help them through positions and submissions, likewise. With anyone "on my level" I'm generally silent during the roll and will complement/thank them afterward. I legit have to focus and this is time for me to improve on myself. Also, I'm 36 and usually need to conserve my energy for these rolls. When I roll with brown and black belts, again, I'm focusing and trying to conserve energy. Occasionally, if anything, a light hearted, self depricating, "oh no!" or "this isn't good." will slip out. Sometimes when I'm really getting smashed I'll ask coach why he's doing this to me, I thought we were friends.. Of course, I know why he does it. Hell, I'm paying good money for it. 😂🤣😂

I'll usually say something like "Dont give up!" and "Keep working it!". I have higher belts try to hit me with leg locks. My response is usually “I have no idea what you are going for so don’t crank it you got me” lol I usually get a puzzled look. Then the higher belts I train with regularly look over laughing saying he is a white belt lol Then they go roll with that guy and leg lock him 😂 Most guys are pretty cool about it though. Only been training 8 months so lots to learn. Probably doesn’t help that 3 of those months I focused on mma instead. Signed up for a tournament coming up so focusing on just bjj for now. Then back to mma. It’s more fun when someone is in your guard and you can hammer fist them in the head while trapping one of their arms and cutting the angle for arm lock. Bjj is easy compared to mma training lol Still fun though I enjoy it.

I am SO that guy, but not in like a mean-spirited way. I just like compliment people on a move I didn't see coming, mention something that happened last roll, whatever. Even when I'm going pretty hard, I just don't feel any mental or emotional pressure, so as long as I'm not out of breath, I'm just like hanging out with a friend while fighting them. It's odd because it's the opposite when I used to do striking stuff. I was completely silent start to finish.

Finally I got to the point where I would crank the submission in the middle of him talking. People pulled me aside and told me that he was doing it to everyone including the higher belts. The professor had to tell him to quit teaching everyone mid roll. One time he freaked out during a sweep I hit him with, screamed it was illegal, went to the workout section of the school and started throwing the dumbbell weights around... Not kidding. Also, I'm not bragging... I'm nothing special. I get smoked all the time. He just wasn't a real brown belt and was insecure about it.

Unsolicited advice, especially from a lower belt, is pretty challenging. The client manager in me understands that all information is good, and the 37-year-old in me understands that it doesn't diminish my ability. But it can be a struggle for a 155lbs blue belt to take “advice” from a 280lbs white belt - ya, you definitely pinned me and that shoulder lock was tight. But about the differences in our size and strength...

Great video. Actually very refreshing to hear. At my gym we tend to talk, and I have always preferred some sort of talking during a roll. Usually if somebody submits me kind of saying that was awesome. That’s about the extent of it though. And yeah, never talk Someone threw moves when they’re beating you. It’s an obvious face saving thing. For my part, whenever I am rolling with somebody it is out of fellowship so a secret part of me is rooting for them, and the other part of me that has that fellowship with them also knows that they deserve nothing less than my best. So if they got a submission on me then not only did they earn it but it was awesome and I am proud of them for it. But I’m gonna try my best too

We talk more after the fact. Like if I slipped a triangle or armbar, we'll wait for the round to finish and then critique each other positively. Never has it been a negative experience for me.
But it's worth noting too, I'm a lower belt and upper belts will help me finish all the time. "Hey adjust this" or "dont forget your hook" or whatever. It never comes across to me as them talking themselves out of a loss, more that they're helping me get better at my game. There's hardly a better learning opportunity than live rolling and finding yourself in an organic position to say "hey, this is where you need to get that hook in". Maybe it's just a rapport thing? But I'd have never thought I was doing someone a disservice helping them finish a choke so thank you for sharing that. I'll be mindful in the future if I find myself doing that and someone is getting upset.

I am one of the biggest guys in my school and I'm a blue belt, so I normally go a little lighter on the white belts. I have a decent amount of knowledge to know when I'm in trouble or something like that so I defend well. There will be times where I will kind of give them a favorable position to see what they will do and many times they don't take it and usually end up with a bunch of nothing on their end. Now I know how to escape or sweep, but I normally coach them through an option they didn't realize was there. It won't be some amazing rarely seen before technique. It's just that them being inexperienced didn't realize the capabilities from that position. So after I show them I say "Ok, lets go back to that position, but do it for real this time." At that point I'm in a bit more trouble now, but I am decent at defending. I see the smile on their face and that makes me happy because they walked away with something. A few times I got to see the fruits of their labor when they tried the same thing on someone else and I'm in the corner with the Pai Mei beard stroke. Should I stop? Or should I go through the roll and maybe take the time after to show them something?

Best thing to say to an opponent after a roll is ‘thank you for rolling with me’.. done and move on

If i went to a gym that discouraged talking doing rolling id find another one.
As Chewy said, its part of the comradery and enjoyment of the experience.
"Talking" as in , nice job or i messed up or maybe taking the time to explain a defense or submission. Not breaking down the minutes of your day to your rolling partner.

Yes it is cool when amongst friends or just keeping it I. A culturally playful school. But things like “whoops” or “oh oh” I don’t like. I’ll take that as a tap. Or like you said they start coaching as you turn the tide. Great post as always.

I was rolling with a guy 60-80 pounds heavier than me, and I took his back. Then he proceeded to actually tickle my feet. I was so in shock! Over the 7 years of training I had never been tickled while sparring lol!

One of my two favorite partners and I alway have some sort of gay commentary. For example he was drilling a keylock to tap on me earlier and i said "harder daddy" to which he replied "shut up and let me love you!"

I’m with you on the talking to people who you roll with regularly. I’ve just come from class and I was doing that with some of my partners. Example, a guy I roll with every class - at the start you ready for these heel hooks brother, and a new guy pressing me from the top driving his shoulder into my throat, really trying, it wasn’t in I had my shoulder guarding it. I feel him let off and I tell him. If it makes you feel better that wasn’t in dude. His reply, thanks that does make me feel better.

There’s two guys who do this at my gym, I could never put it into words until I watched this video. They’re both 1 stripe white belts and they will walk even blue belts and purple belts through moves while rolling. I never knew why but it always rubbed me the wrong way.

I don't do bjj but from wrestling if it's competitive there's no talking, if it's friendly there's shit talking, and if it's a novice against someone good you give them encouragement for what they did right. The only time you give them advice is when they're obviously stuck and don't have an answer to something. I think conducting yourself in that way is good for everyone. No distractions when you're pushing yourself, learning to relax and joke around, and helping a novice who is stuck... Also for me, I think I became a better wrestler when I started teaching technique to the younger guys, and we were all the unskilled once. It's good hearing feedback. Obviously using it as a copout is bullshit
Edit: just subscribed to you, came across this channel a few times and love your input on things

I came from a wrestling background and I preface with that bc most guys at my gym give me credit for the strength that I have in between positions and my positional defense. However even though I can pretty much control position and scramble out of many weak positions I do struggle with finding submissions. one day I was rolling with one of the vets (purple belt) and essentially he put himself in a dominant position I successfully scrambled and found myself on top mount. In the exchange my strength was just too much for his defense but after about 30 seconds of no progress and me just grabbing his wrists and trying to find something he taught me an arm bar which is now one of my fav submissions and one of my most successful. different circumstances but very similar situations

I also talk alot because of my depression its something i cant help unfortunatly but it helps me get some pressure out of my head. Iam very much ashamed about it but i told the student what my problems were and they say dont mind brother if its to much we will tell you right. That helped me so much. But during rolling i like to talk like wow I didn’t see that comming or damn your strong bro. And i like it and so do my trainingpartners to evaluate on the techniques and how to get better. I allways say honestly if a choke isn’t tight and what they can do about that because tight fucking chokes is sort of becomming my middle name. But iam am an idiot when doing a kimura so my trainingpartner helps me how to do that and i really appreciate it.

One of my coaches is a young guy in his early 20s and he’s a purple belt. He grunts like he’s struggling, which is hilarious as hell as hell cuz I know he can beat me up in a heart beat if he wants. I’m a 36 yr old white belt so it sort of breaks the ice for me. I love my gym.
