250lbs Adult Purple Belt Brutally Slams 140lbs Blue Belt Teenager

  • Recently I came across a video of a teenage BJJ blue belt being slammed by a much larger purple belt. The video (which the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach of the gym and father of the teenager posted) shows a video of a much larger guy slamming a much smaller teenager.
    Now the situation is unfortunate but it's a good lesson to observe in the future for yourself should you ever roll with someone brand new. Brand new meaning, new to Jiu-jitsu or just new to your gym.
    As I'll explain in the video I've had some unfortunate situations that I learned the hard way. So I'm sharing to hopefully help you not make the same mistake or have the "pleasure" of learning the lesson as bad as some have.

    I train at this gym. We have two gyms in one location. An MMA gym and a jiu jitsu gym. This was the MMA's coaches son that got slammed. The person doing the slamming was a visitor. Since it was nogi none of us were sure what color belt he was until it was confirmed by others. The purple belt did come back and profusely apologize a few days later. Much respect to both coaches for showing restraint towards the purple belt. Needless to say, he is banned. The blue belt is perfectly fine and doing well.

Stuff like this is why I don't roll with heavyweights I never rolled with before or met before unless they are at least a brown belt or if my female brown belt instructor tells me the person is a safe person to roll with. As a very strong guy, I've been asked a couple of times "hey can you help me train against slams, my upcoming fight allows them" and generally what we'll do is roll and if I can pick them up to waist level, that counts as a "tap" and I'll gently put them down and we reset.
    There's ZERO need to actually slam someone like that mid-roll.

    • @Jamoni1
      @Jamoni1 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Exactly this. If you're training REALLY dangerous stuff, you isolate the skill, and figure out how to do it safely. My son and I will occasionally put striking into our rolls, or wrist locks, or training knives, or whatever. We always specify how hard or fast we're going to go, and under what conditions we'll tap or reset, etc etc.

      If we got into a throw position we would pause and let them know that "I'm going to throw you" and do a gentle throw (together) so that when you're on the ground you're working through that take down and in the "same" ground position that you hypothetically would be in. But yeah, absolute no reason to slam someone like that. Completely out of line. (this is in wrestling)

    Agree 100%!!! Your first roll with someone is like a first date... you are feeling the other person out to see what they are about, checking out their energy, and surveying their techniques. Accordingly, your should be reserved, cautious, and patient. No one should be going full throttle on a first roll. I also definitely think there should be a conversation about the rule set... just like getting "consent". Something like "Hey man, I'm fine it we play heal hooks. Just please know that I will tap early and there is no need to crank it." Similarly you could say, "I have been working on my heel hook defenses. I may try to fight out of it, but I will concede if it locked in... no need to crank it." The same goes for wrist locks. There is no need to crank the submission - I know I had it, your know I had it and your wrist isn't broken, we both go home happy.

    We have a jacked purple belt at my gym who is a retiree from my Police Department. First time he was rolling with my no-stripe white belt wife, he double legs and scoops her up for a slam. I was filming and was *so* relieved when he hit the peak of his ascent, quietly reminded her that “This is bad, don’t let anyone do this,” before cradling her and putting her down like a baby in a mock “slam”.

    One of my favorite training partners is my buddy who is a 1 stripe blue belt. She has been practicing for years. She out weighs me by 40 lbs and me being a little 1 stripe white belt she gets it. She puts the pressure on where need be. She lets me work sometimes she tells me which way to roll, and other times she lets me roll the one way to teach me. She is amazing and I couldn't imagine her slamming me on my neck. It's about trusting your partner. Learning from them. I've had many great partners at my gym and I'm thankful for that. but slamming as a higher belt is ego. Chewy, since I know you read the Stoics, I’d say this part of a Marcus Aurelius quote fits well when rolling (or being!) with anyone, new or otherwise:
    “When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They are like this because they can't tell good from evil.“
    Remembering this quote reminds me that it’s my responsibility to prevent injuries, to speak up for myself, and to give people a break when they mess up. To not blame, but protect and inform. It also is a great reminder to apologize if I fall into being a jerk or making a jerk move by accident.
    I’m glad no grave injuries happened. I hope the blue belt feels better, because concussions suck. And I hope that the purple belt has learned his lesson to be a bit more conscious in his rolls.

    I started training in 2011. Joined the army in 2012. So, I had breaks in my training. 3 or 4 months here or there. Got my blue belt in 2017. Put in 2 years of solid training and then moved to Alaska where there was no bjj. Then I moved to FL and started training again. At that point I was a really good blue belt. I am a purple belt now. All the actual issues I've ever had in bjj were all related to the fact that I was a blue belt and I tapped eitger a purple or a brown belt. The egos can not handle it when a lower belt beats them. If you tap a higher belt and it's someone you don't often roll with, be cautious on your next roll with that person. They will say you're "strong" or "spazzy" I even got cussed out and threatened by a brown belt that was a lawyer who was also a black belt in judo. I armbarred him and he didn't tap, he started yelling at me and cussing and said that I was intentionally trying to injure him. Luckily my professor saw the whole roll. Be careful when you roll with people who are new to you and always remember to stay humble. There is an inner strength in humility.

      Belts are pretty useless outside of the school they were given in. Even within the school, their meaning may be unclear. Is it a level of commitment, knowledge, or competition success? How much of each, and how does that translate when someone is five years old, or eighty years old?
      I'm a black belt in Judo. I didn't ask for it, and never wanted a higher degree. I was never very good (I've trained with two Olympians, so I know where I stand). I love Judo though. I want to play until I'm dead. I wouldn't mind dying on the mat.

    A slam is a strike. In a self defense scenario you should be prepared for it, but in a grappling scenario it should be forbidden.
    And I'd expand the advice to: When rolling with a new person be specially prepared whenever there's a situation where that person's ego may be hurt: higher belts in other sports, higher belts who've been off the mats for some time, bodybuilders, etc. The person may start light but they snap if you start ""winning"" the roll. If your ego is controlled enough, you might even discreetly let the person recover, in order to prevent injuries.

It did not feel good in the moment, that's for sure. And on the opposite spectrum, I had a purple belt recently crank my ankles when I had him in back control with my feet wrapped around as a "teaching" moment.
    I'm still recovering three days later, and if I see him, I'm going to be blunt. I don't believe you have to injure those lower than you in rank to get a point across. And this reflects well with a different purple belt I rolled with practicing rear naked chokes and escapes. He was super nice, extremely patient with me, and helped iron out kinks. Comparing the two, he strikes me as a true leader.

I never aggressively defend when im in a bad position especially when someone is taking it slowly for me because its bad sportsmanship, dangerous and i learn nothing. My training partner on my first roll was a bigger and stronger guy, and he was not taking it easy, I remember thinking as he ripped a kimura on me that he was going to take my whole arm. Alarm bells should have been ringing then that this was unsafe but I was stubborn, next minute he yanks an arm bar and my pec gets torn. $$$$ and months not being able to train, but a very good lesson, YOU have to look after yourself and sometimes that means only rolling with partners who you trust.

    When I was a freaking white belt, my first day, the only thing I knew about BJJ was what I watched being an obsessed MMA fan my entire life. Stuff from UFC and Pride mainly, I was very green to the culture, I was matched up with a kid who was 17 I was 19, he was about 150 pounds soaking wet I was 225 or so. I could feel right away that I was much stronger than him, to the point we’re it was not really fair. I could literally just muscle my way into anything I wanted, and I did, I knew what position was what already. I knew a little lol. I couldn’t submit the kid tho because I had literally no skill with subs even tho I think I could have gotten a key lock very easily as it’s a no brainer move once you learn it you can catch a green person with it. But anyway he ended up getting me in a triangle and I’m that moment I knew that I could lift him up over my head and slam him on his neck. It was the first thing that popped in my head out of instinct.
    But I didn’t, you know why? That’s not something you learn from experience, not something that needs to be taught to someone who doesn’t know BJJ, that’s just common sense and morals. This guy is a freaking purple belt. He knew better, and the fact that he tried to play it off is just sad, what did he think was going to happen? If the kid would have just landed with his legs loosened up and the bigger guy got out of it and they kept rolling it doesn’t matter, that’s a dick move. Honestly I got guys we’re I go that would probably have attacked him for that. No joke.

    Regardless of the difference in gym etiquette/expectations, it's abhorrent that a purple belt would feel the need to slam someone to get out of a bad situation, much less a much larger adult doing it to a teenage kid. I feel like by purple you should be confident in some guard breaks and triangle escapes, not to mention letting go of your ego a lot more.

    One thing that I love about combat sports is the “love for your opponent.” What I mean is that as warriors, we must have respect for your opponent. It takes guts to get into the ring/cage/matt etc.
    People should go humbled at all times when you get into a ring, no matter if it’s sparing/rolling or an actual fight.
    This guy did not show respect nor did he show any common sense. It does not matter if you roll with a blue, white or black belt, respect is the most important aspect in any combat sport.

    My very first bjj class I got put in an armbar by a blue belt, we were both probably 220ish lbs. I picked the him up and didnt really slam him, but didnt exactly put him down nicely either. I got in ALOT of trouble, they basically told me "this is jiu jitsu we dont do that here" I still think about it today because the instructor made me feel terrible about it

    • @mikeCD62
      @mikeCD62 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a major red flag in the coach if you ask me. It's not a reasonable expectation that people would know the best practices and conventions of rolling on their first day. Obviously slamming people isnt safe, but being put in an armbar doesn't FEEL safe the first time it happens. An untrained person might see a "60% slam" as matching the intensity of his partner. If a coach wants to have people roll on the first day, then they need to take responsibility for people "spazzing out" or trying things that aren't totally safe. I'm not against having people roll on the first day, but I think it needs to be done in a smart way to minimize risk-- have the new people roll with people who will be able to control the situation safely if things get weird. Even then, shit like this can happen. The risk might be worth it, but that's something the coach needs to weigh, and they are accountable for the outcome, not the new student.
      I'm not saying your coach is a bad person or even generally a bad coach-- everyone has off days, and everyone has weaknesses. Ideally, your coach should have been firm with you and explained why that rule is in place, but wouldn't have made you feel bad for making an honest mistake.

    Like with anything, if you don’t recognize the possibility of something occurring you will learn to ignore that possibility. And in the situation of slams, that could put you in danger. having said that, you don’t need to actually slam somebody to teach them how to be aware of the possibility of it happening, just a lift of 6 to 12 inches off the mat just to let them know that this is the time to let go would be sufficient.
    To those that talk about realistic training, try doing jujitsu on the asphalt or on a rocky outcrop in where actual real life occurs, then come back and talk about realistic. if we didn’t have the mats to train on that we did, jujitsu would be primarily a standup thing just like judo, well in fact, it would be judo. The training surface is the reason why we have the luxury of rolling around so much and still functioning for our work life the next day.
