- Earlier this month I was in Chicago looking a prefab home company that is building Nordic Style prefab home in America. While I was there I toured one of their nearly finished models and learned about how the company started and where they're going. In this video I sit down with the co founder of Prefab Pads to give an inside look at their prefab home company. Watch and learn more about Prefab Pads, the exclusive distributor of Mycabin in the US.

Nordic designs are Nordic designs for a reason. No overhanging roof allows as much sunlight in throughout the day allowing for the use of passive solar heat. In the US we have very hot summers and an overhanging eve cuts down on the amount of sun coming through windows that heat up the house unnecessarily. I know, I live in So Cal with no overhanging roof and it sucks. Js.
No carpentry skill needed for this build. Box and roof
I'd just put up shade cloth.
I just looked at their website the big one is $149,500, that's absolutely nuts.
My only problem is the windows. I see in other dealers too, where the windows don't open. At home, I always have a half dozen windows open, but in a small space, it would seem even more important. That might just be a personal thing, though.
Yes! This is supposed to be efficient. Not being able to open windows is mind-blowingly dumb.
I think the windows do not open in these eco house. Global Warming and all that. .
It is not just you. I love having open windows in the summer months, when we are not breathing in smoke from forest fires, to help clean out the rancid air from winter.
@@jwyllor I'm in Ohio. It's spring. I open everything.
You can't open windows??, seriously that sounds just ridiculous, who wants to buy a house without ability to open windows ????
These are really nice! I really like the modern feel to them. Thanks Kerry!
Glad you like them!
Thanks, Kerry. Nothing on pricing?
I like the layout of the long ,but the Elle short would be a good Murphy bed idea. Thanks for my Sunday enjoyment 😁, like the w/d in the bathroom. 🥶🖤🔔👍🏻💕
Thank you for this video. It’s good to know that these are available in the US. Nice option!
To the author: ¿European Style... do you know where is Europe, right?
They look very well built & insulated … I’ve always admired the Nordic designs. I’m wondering if they would consider selling the blueprints and materials list for one of them? Nice video Kerry. You really missed out on some delicious pizza, duh! 😂
You forgot to have the pizza, WOW. You probably didn't have an Italian beef Sandwich either, did you?
Oh, man,
What were you thinking? Or not thinking I should say, but thanks for the info. on the units. Like the fact that there's some customizing available. Well done, Kerry. It's just gonna take me a while to get over you didn't have the pizza. 😮
🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Or the Chicago hot dog!
Oh, no, not the hot dog? Tell me you at least had a hot dog Kerry. And don't even get me started on the Carmel corn.
Theses houses have a practical design and have an aesthetic look as well.
Glad you like them
Thank you for doing an in-depth interview with the owner about the company and their product(s). The owner did a great job explaining the building of the units and available amenities. A very outgoing attitude in wanting to make customers happy. These are gorgeous and streamlined with a roomy yet cozy feel. You've gotta go back to Chicago for a slice of pie...
I liked that the co-founder fessed up to the fact that they are NOT building affordable homes. Clearly Prefab Pads have found their market and good luck to them.
Yeah there are multiple market segments within the industry
Thanks for this Kerry! It's important for me to know what companies AREN'T interested in affordable housing in this day and age. I prefer doing business with companies with a conscience for my affordable housing project.✌🏽👍🏽
Zip sheathing and closed cell foam is a great combo.
Thanks for watching
Kerry: You are my hero. You are in my home state of Illinois. This is where we need a house
You rock.
Thanks!
I have dozens of cousins in Illinois, you should have stopped by, They probably would have given you some pizza.
They have always fed me when I was there. 😁👍
Chicago Deep-Dish Pizza -- Giordano's is my favorite every time I'm in the area.
Next time!
I wonder how much it cost to ship one to AL. Those are nice. I like the customization options.
No Pizza?!?!? 🍕
Doh!!!😖
Beautiful homes. Going by the Mila Long shown: The interior finish is eye popping. The shower walls had me rewinding multiple times. Solid kitchen. The layout has a great flow. The heated floor is a big win. 🏅
Another great walkthrough Kerry. If you’re ever in NYC, don’t skip the pizza.😉😎
Is the NYC slice better than Chicago???
@@KerryTarnow I’ll admit I’m biased. But in my opinion, hell yes! 🍕🤤
No Chicago pizza 🍕. Research online and have one shipped to you. I like the concept. Very awesome homes.
The housing looks to be high quality... I'm curious though, he said they were 13 feet tall. How do they plan to ship them? The legal load height is restricted to 13'6" OA.
I would like to know what foam exactly you are using??
Nice job Kerry but tell builder for anyone who is cooking you need a vent over the cooktop. Swap the sink so to have better socializing and put the cooktop where it was so you can have a vent.
Down draft vent can be installed on that peninsula and likely was done so the cook can see everyone .
I would never put the sink facing the wall. This is how my kitchen is setup and I dislike it immensely, even with the window to the right.
Agree. A window needs to be over the sink.
Kerry, I like a lot of what you put up on your channel. I have a request, will you do at least one video a month featuring companies that are working on the homeless and U. S. housing crisis.
There's a lot of focus on prefab housing for adu or other money making uses for the wealthy and I'd like a bit more balance.
Thanks, Kerry.
You're welcome!
Yes, thank you. Did I miss the bedroom? Like you missed the pizza 🍕?( I have not had Chicago pizza yet either)
Yeah thanks again Kerry 😘
Prices?
I like the long skinny bathroom window.
Same
Me too but I’m a woman so it’s a no go unless I want to share a full Monty with neighbours
@@maureendonnelly9075 I'm a woman. only birds bee and Bears around here.
$150k for the Milla Long. If they're using quality stuff, then the price isn't that bad. I wonder if you can change some of the window sizes? Floor to ceiling is a bit too much. Love the look especially in black.
Those floor to ceiling windows mean that there is no wall against which to place furniture, which is important in a small unit.
Beautiful ❤️ homes
These buildings are quality. One day, a builder in the USA will be able to sell similar small homes for 100k, and still make a profit.
I could. These should not cost anything more for the size
Nice! Finally something closer to home (for my area anyway). Styled, affordable, nicely made and willing to work with the customer -- check, check, check and check. And the bathroom is a good size.
And it showed a washer and dryer instead of a combo or the smaller single unit. Big bathroom.
the finishes are always what cost the most, wish i could get a slanted shed roof
They’re coming out with a different roof
Outstanding homes. Wonderful interview.
Hi Kerry, thanks for another interesting option. Have you ever heard of ZipKit Homes? Would love for you to present a video on what they are all about
i want to see white options in the nordic style /white or light exterior with white window framing. not seeing much of anything.
I would like to see that too
✔️
Thanks, Kerry! This looks very promising. I will be in the Waukegan area in June. If I have time , I might attempt a look in person.
can the come build it on my land? i dont want to deal with settling and i dont want to pay for shipping.
Pay for shipping Vs pay for them to bring all the stuff to a remote site and cover living costs whilst they build it? Don't think that would be cheaper
@@davem2369 i imagine they will live in a camper or something. i want my structure to to be anchored to the property and not moveable like a trailer. im sure they can work something out for both parties. one should always ask for what they want.
perfect for a ADU. would like to see a little bigger like 650-750 square feet
Maybe they’ll introduce larger sizes at some point
You didn't provide any pricing options!!!
The battens for the rain screen are in the wrong orientation. They should be vertical, not horizontal. The way they are, they will trap water & rot either the cladding or the underlay.....
I believe those are the furring strips that can be run either direction due to the corrugated nature of the strips.
European style or American shed?
Get any free samples?
Pizza tastes better with Labbatt's or Molson anyway :)
Good point
You saves yourself from them bad chicago pizza my friend. 😉
Haha!
Kerry Tarnow, the Indiana Jones of the modular world. Thanks! p.s. What the heck does 'ginch' mean?
Ginch= underwear 🩲 I think, is what I discovered.
Too expensive for such a small space plus other costs!!! No way!!!
The pizza is damn good! You missed out! Sorry!
Dang!
@@KerryTarnow -I’m following you because I want to purchase a prefab home in the South. Still looking! Want something modern but comfortable not too sterile! So keep them coming! (Former Project Manager)
Windows don't look like they open which seems a horrible design flaw. The largest unit doesn't have a pantry, either, unless you count the loft but who wants to use a loft as a pantry every day? If they could increase that size another 100-200 square feet, I think they'd have a very full-time livable place. Maybe have some way to marry two separate sizes on-site to achieve this. As it is, that large unit feels not quite large enough to me.
They do
8:57 - "treat it once and leave it" ? hopefully you'll treat your reveals with a weather strip/ drip/ guard - rainwater has a tendency to run with gravity... or you could leave it... 😂
Why censor the word "Covid?"
Nice ones !
Thanks for the info.
One of these days a small home builder will offer the option for a basement for stationary units. Lower level HVAC, an additional 2pc bathrm, laundry and additional storage will shoot sales through the roof.
I'm sorry I know the housing crisis in illinois is bad. And finding something for under 200k is impossible. But jesus. 600 sqft for 150k???? I can find at least 3 in my area that are double that square footage for the 200 mark. Thats absurd.
While I agree that the square footage price is very high, there are folks who can easily afford these units.
Overpriced at almost $200k, rather get a full sized home
Have you checked out Modular Home Direct? They have a wide variety of styles for reasonable rates. I would love to see a video in their production facility.
You’re right! Built in Salt Lake and their prices are vastly better than 90% of all the others. Even Boxabl.
Do they not have prices for them yet? Or did I just miss it somehow??(Entirely possible)
I didn't catch it either. All I heard was high end materials and no numbers to support that.
The largest unit is approximately $150,000
Good luck to you. Not a supportable business model due to the fact you can’t produce much. Most of these small companies don’t really understand.
Thanks for watching
There is no reason something like this shouldn’t be “affordable. Yeah the materials should be high quality, because you live in it, but people have always lived in homes like this, because they aren’t grandiose, but affordable.
Thank you for the feedback Larry
Kerry, every time I clicked on the My Cabin link/website - I received on error saying it was forbidden and my acess was denied
I didn't seem to have any issues, using the link he provided. Not sure if your security software is preventing you??
But Idaho doesn't have indoor plumbing yet. . . .
“Full bath” = shower and tub.
Those shown in video are all 3/4 baths, not full baths.
Also, sales guy sez Nordic cabin.
I see Home Depot shed.
Different strokes for different folks.
HI ...I LIKE WATCHING YOUR VIDS ...BUT I GET THE FEELING THAT NONE OF THESE SMALL HOMES CAN BE SHIPPED TO THE UK...ARE THEY JUST FOR THAT SIDE OF THE WORLD....!!!!!!!!???
They’re also being built in the Uk
👍
👊🏻
@@KerryTarnow 🙂
Oh great! European style food for tornadoes!!! 😂😂😂 Aren’t these just “trailers” ???
so now we're skipping the pricing altogether, so i guess we just have to assume they're all insane...This product space is going to evaporate .Whos dumb enough to pay $328 per sq ft; thats not including delivery and site development. Thats just the $150k price (that i had to research on their website) divided by 456sq/ft. figure at least another $25k in delivery and site development. not to mention the price of the land itself, what, say even just $50k for land....we're into this thing for $225k a LEAST for 456sq ft?! hahaha what a joke.
I did another video touring one of their holes that included price
These really don't look all that Nordic, just a mobile home with bigger windows. Way overpriced for what they're making compared to others.
I bet the day you realize people are NOT interested in looking at your face, your views and subscriptions will greatly increase.
Thank you for the feedback 😃
First
Nice!
You can always substitute the word European with overly regulated and expensive. I’ll pass.
Haha
Prefab industry lost its purpose and direction
Thank you for the feedback
@@KerryTarnow Prefab companies just replicate old building technologies in smaller scale. I don’t see fully automated production similar to electric car manufacturing.
Uh oh, "We're not affordable housing".
That's what I heard too, and no numbers to show us why.
Confidence in doing the wrong thing is not very ensuring when SPRAY FOAM is used. SPRAY FOAM will reduce your health quality in the home while reducing the resale value at the same time... nice move.
George, you obviously have an agenda. Be up front about it.
@@lordinquis8r679 I want you to buy this product... don't be shy about it...
@@lordinquis8r679 styro got his tongue…🤡😂🤦♂️
I thought there were some safe, healthy spray foam options? (not that they said they were using that) but also, doesn't spray foam offer a higher R- value and better seal? I don't follow what you're saying.
Is it an actual, settled fact that spray foam is dangerous for humans? If it is, why is it allowed to be used?
AND WHY DON'T U REPLY...I'VE ASKED U QUESTION BEFORE...NO REPLY 😮😮😮
ALL CAPS and no patience. Perhaps he was busy for a few moments...
NEVER trust a guy who doesn’t lace-up & tie his shoes.
I’m in my 60s in my grandfather taught me that.
Guys who use Slip-on-shoes &/or use loafers? are lazy-af to their bones.
😂😂, well the hurry up and run stage are proving many shoes that slip on
What about cowboy boots?
What on earth? Welcome to this century. Pointless thing to judge people on.
How about a story bout my husband. I doubt your grandfather was think he was lazy af. He built tires. He now moves tires on tugger trucks because his left arm is lower than his right arm and he also has a bad back from repelling out of helicopters in the Army and working in the tire plant. He wears Skechers around the house, out in public, and on the way to the plant. When he gets there he puts on his steel toe lace-up boots. They were pull on boots until he broke the bones in his lower leg. So what do you think about men that wear slip on shoes.
Way overpriced.
