- Metaligna has officially released their prototype modular at the Ottawa home show by the name of the Piccolo. It's a small footprint steel frame modular with a cool layout that I haven't seen anywhere else. Metaligna is an new prefab home company based near Ottawa with a 175,000 square foot facility with the capacity to produce 150-200 prefab homes per year in a densely populated area. This is the first prototype in their new line of modular and I think it turned out great. In this video I have some of the first pictures available of the newest prefab home in North America. I live in Ottawa and have never heard of the company. Thankyou for featuring this company . We have several mobile home sites and I think it would be better having prefab homes in place of mobile homes. More substantial and with good placement and good outdoor design I would be interested. 🇨🇦
First, I like the format you did with this video, you stated at the beginning that this new release was or is a steel framed modular home. These are the best in this booming industry, it’s either steel or aluminum framing that guarantees quality and a solid structural building especially if it goes from floor to ceiling and this manufacturer has done just that. Another excellent video and you have standardized your presentation without being boring, I even like your corny jokes it keeps the video lively 😂

I really like the Piccolo. I was expecting it to be pickle color. I guess because I’m crazy. I’m glad they went with a dark exterior. It fits in well with most northeastern city color schemes. That’s not surprising for a company that is located in the northeast, but very welcomed. 😎

Nowhere did I see accommodation for storing "stuff," like....oh, CLOTHING! And shoes, gear, toys, and .....whatever. I guess if you gotta store stuff, you gotta haul in your own storage furniture -- dressers, cabinets, drawers, and so on. Maybe all the storage will be available through customization, but the video didn't mention it. And the price(s) would be higher, too. Nice to know, Kerry, what's happening in the pre-fab space. This looks sleek inside and out, and I like the light wood interior option. And that steel frame sure looks to be engineered well.
All that said, you should write them and remind them that the real market is in the 2&1 500-700 sqft market priced at $125-165,000

Have you ever heard of anyone buying two or three of these and connecting them in such a way to form a T-shape or U shape or H shape ?
Maybe have the center section the kitchen, utility room and living room.
One section be 2 bedrooms and 2 bathroom.
And 1 section B the master suite.
Provided of course if they let you design the interior.
There are plans that take in a U shape! They are really cool

Hi Kerry, I'm in California. Do you provide consulting services? I'm looking to get a manufactured home set up and am looking for someone I can speak with to get a few questions answered. Also wondering if you have recommended manufactured home installers list?
I like the floorplan and interior and it's a good price. My concern would be the shipping costs. Since it is very wide, in the U.S. you will need a licensed commercial mover, 2 escort vehicles, and permits. Yhe longer the distance, the costlier it gets.
For sure, it does add up fast.

So many dope prototypes & designs in this space. Seems like the real issue is being able to ramp up production and hold costs to promised levels. Are there any of these companies that have successfully accomplished this?
Most of the companies with big output have been at it for years (champion, cavco, clayton). A few of the newer age companies are just starting to scale now (plant prefab, dvele)
What is the insulation R-value of the roof and walls for this model?
Critique: I don’t think we should normalize living in a shed.

Arnprior, Ontario actually, just up the hwy from Ottawa. We love the Prior, lower property tax from the city. Ottawa home show, march fri 24th noon to 9 sat 25th 10am to7pm shows at the airport adults $15 to get in and $10 to park, bit of a rip off, I'd go right o the factory to see the modals.
Hi Kerry what’s the advantage of buying these types of homes instead of a manufactured home? For $138k someone can buy a 1200sq ft manufactured home. Manufactured homes nowadays are built per HUD codes and they are really well built.

@@craigexsted6530 good point. I live in Fremont. I vaguely recall about 5-7 years ago it wasn’t allowed but now it is. Building an ADU in Fremont is around $350-$500 sqft so it is a no brainer to get a manufactured home.
One advantage to buying a park model (have to be under 400 sq ft) is that they are treated the same as an RV is (if they meet the official park model standards that is) thus no permitting is necessary.
@@uteruspower1862 The reason I asked the question is because I intend on Using SB9 to lot split and use the manufactured home as a permanent structure on the lot that was split using SB9. Unfortunately because it’s a permanent structure I would need to pay impact fees which are really high. And install utilities etc.

Our units are above bud standards and designed to meet and exceed all USA building codes.
The advance to the size of this and the fact that we exceed ainsi park model standard. Most cities accept them as park model .. we recently delivered similar product to Maine and they accepted them as park models
Putting the kitchen on the front wall would leave space for closets seperating the BR from the bath.

so i have been following your channel for years and it all started with the $15k tumbleweed tiny house, but all i can say is that this whole movement was supposed to make housing affordable, make it so people can skip the mortgage... and all i can say is 'well, that didn't work out.' coz now that i'm looking to retire, these houses are just as much if not more, to get land and the utitlities and the house... it's even MORE expensive and i just don't see the incentive anymore and had to give up on my dream.
I’m into black exteriors, or even better, a bronze that is so dark it is almost black. Great in northern latitudes, or if you have plenty of shade or insulation.

All our homes are built to withstand our tremendous winters in Canada
They are rated for seismic areas (class-d) and also fair extremely well under winds in excess of 100mph

Sucks that the smaller model you featured is not certified as a Park Model even though it is under the 400 sq ft max for the US market. It would make an excellent disabled and senior accessible park model. One big issue with park models is the narrow hallways and doors. I see that the park models they sell are just the run of the mill design. Is there a reason a park model can’t be 14’ X 28’ (too wide?)
Park models are built on trailers to be transportable and are classified as RVs. Edit: If you go to their website, MetaLigna does make Park Models, too. I'm not sure about this Piccolo model though. In the US, Park Models can be up to 14 ft. wide. That is the limit.
I read various things about length and overall size but the HUD site (in the US) says Park Model maximum square feet is 500. I've noticed that there are Canadian park models that have better insulation than the US ones and can be a little bigger, too. In the US, Park Models are nearly all R-11 in the walls and made of 2 x 4s. That doesn't really cut it for places with really cold winters. I expect these ADUs have regular house insulation but it's hard to tell on their website. MetaLigna's park models have R12 in the walls, and I'm not impressed by that at all.

I was really impressed until I saw the price. I figured that the price would be a little lower, but with the small houses being all the rave and a little cheaper, it would be tough competition. I saw that something that needs more attention is hemp building blocks.

It's possible. I think it's one way to scale to large numbers because then the dealers handle logistics.
