Sometimes, a gimmick is all you need. I remember the clown inviting himself onto the pitch after the World Cup final in 2022, trying to celebrate with the winners. None of them had a clue who he was.
My wife and I went into this restaurant a few years ago as we happened to walk past whilst on a trip to London. We had never heard of the place nor the guy at that time. Sat down and was shocked at the prices, so had a burger each. It was basically full of what looked like a mixture of Arabian royals, Albanian gangsters, and “influencers”. One table totally summed up both the place and the modern world. A young couple, or even possibly brother and sister, were sat at a table (no more than 18). They looked impossibly rich, and didn’t speak a single word to each other. They both just stared blankly onto their phones. They both looked totally miserable. Suddenly, a procession of waiters appeared at their table with food, sparklers going off, and music playing, they immediately starting filming each other, pulling geeky faces, talking to the camera, and acting like they were the happiest people on the planet. It was all a show for the camera. I have never seen a transformation like it. The girl, took off the hoody she had been wearing (complete with hood up and sunglasses on) to reveal a plunging neckline top and make up she had spent hours on. The charade lasted no more than a couple of minutes. As soon as the waiters left, and this show was over, she put her hoody back on, and both went back to their phones. They didn’t say another word to each other the entire time. It was genuinely like being at a circus.

And New York has highly overrated food made out of mediocre ingredients compared to in Europe or Japan Not to mention u will get robbed by Jamal outside if ur out after 7pm lol bunk city filled with leftist low IQ CROOKS
When you’re abroad they say you should look for restaurants that are busy and full of locals as it means you’re getting a good meal at decent prices. By that measure, 3 customers and exorbitant prices means AVOID, AVOID, AVOID! Thanks for taking one for the team 😂. Subscribed!
Your first point is very valid and something I usually abide by when I go on holiday abroad but you have to remember that food vloggers usually go to restaurants in the UK as early as possible to avoid the crowds!... Every other food vlogger I watch does this and they're always empty and I'm sure I've heard Gary mention that he does that too.
I’d agree with that comment because if a restaurant is busy they’re turning over the food every night so there’s nothing hanging around, so it’s always fresh.
£630 for the tomahawk wow. Enjoyed my £3.00 rump from Tesco the other day. Presentation was soulless, prices out of this world. All in all a bit depressing. Fantastic video Gary, have a great weekend.
I could win £200m on the Euromillions, and I still wouldn't go anywhere near that place. Also, if the total cost is £42.90 - then that is the price that should be listed on the menu!
i would have written this very same comment. I'd even go further, i'd fucking go to the closest competitor and spend 10x times the amount just to fuck this place, obviously would have to win the lottery first
Aah Gary I just love your honesty - but more than that I appreciate how respectful you are to the folks who work so hard in these places, whether or not the food is value for money.
I absolutely detest having to scan for a menu! UGH! It just makes everyone at the table get out their phones and start scrolling lol! Sorry for the rant. Amazing review as usual and your charming personality really brightens our day.
Salt Bae is Turkish for "Prententious Upstart". Disgusting prices for below average food. You have been to number of "expensive" restaurants in the past but the difference is that they had quality food and great places for a treat - anniversary etc but I wouldn't go the this poor excuse for a top restaurant even if you paid me. Thankyou you for showing this muppet up for what he is. Thankyou Gary. Always a great & honest review.
Yes, he is a kurdish. Do you know how he become famous? He was the mistress of a very rich businessman at Turkey. Yes, you read that right! The guy was old and married. Anyways, then his boyfriend opened him his first restaurants and paid for a big social media campaign. The guy also owned a few tv station. He was a nobody and in a few days he became very famous.
Yet another wonderful review. i would never dream of setting foot across the threshold of this ‘restaurant’. To those souls who frequent such places, “Stupid is, as stupid does!” The fact that the establishment was almost empty speaks volumes about its reputation Thank you again for brightening my day, Sir.
I live in the UAE where the average Salt Bae customer has a million quid car and a half million quid watch. 690 quid for a steak isn't going to register as spending money. Fair play to the guy, though, he's a butcher who found a way to rinse the rich!
This just reminds me of Harry Endfields sketch where he owns an antique shop and charges extortionate prices for pretty ordinary items. The shop is called "I saw you Coming". Hilarious
So unique, genuine and original. I think this is what keeps me coming back for more. Seriously speaking though, you are so different from what I have seen on you tube. Fantastic!
When that steak and mash appeared on screen I burst out laughing 😂😂😂. As they say in Turkey Isemek !!! This is what makes this channel great !!! Saves you making a very expensive mistake !!! Cheers Gary 👍👍👍
If I were a millionaire, I still wouldn't fall for this hyped up bilge. Give me a pub steak and a few beers anytime, enjoyed with the company of like-minded friends.
This food was barely acceptable to anyone outside Knightsbridge. The steak and mash was underwhelming in its visual impact. The meal as a whole was less than enticing for a return, and that should be the first thought of any restaurant owner. The owners ego was bigger than the meal.
Gary for the price of the tomahawk steak you could fly BA to Cape Town, stay in a 5 star rated hotel and have a five course (wine pairing included) supper at the renowned fine dining restaurant The Test kitchen or The Potluck club. The whole salty bae thing is a rip off. Nice video Gary
I notice that the menu-board outside (00:57) features “desert” options. Sweet sand-wiches, perhaps? Rocky road? Complete-absence-of-forest cake? [added later: my point for those who missed the word-play, was that the menu featured a misspelling of “desert”-a waterless, often sandy, desolate area of land-instead of “dessert”, a sweet course at the end of a meal.]
I like to think people recommend places like this as it’s a place that intrigues them and they know they’ll get on honest review from you. Love that channel Gary ❤
Me and my wife were in Istanbul and we asked our hotel staff where was nice to eat for a celebration meal. They recommended Nusr-et - but the difference is that it was much, much more affordable than anywhere else I have seen. It was one of the 2 original locations that he opened. There was a lot of locals there and to be fair they were eating burgers mainly, which shows the difference in purchasing power as we had a steak each, (rump & Sirloin) a side each and a dessert each. I do have to say, it was easily THE best steak I have ever had and I am the sort of guy that appreciates good quality, superbly cooked meat. The cost would be less than the equivalent in a posh London or Cotswolds restaurant so it was fine for us as a celebration , I appreciate I may be slightly privileged to be in that position not to baulk at the price however. I am very glad we went, would I rush back though? Probably not - we’ve done it now and the world has different things to experience and offer. What irked me the most was that no alcohol was served in his Turkish restaurants.
I admire that you take the time to go through and answer a good portion of comments, despite having almost 1,800 of them. Great review as always! Look forward to seeing your channel at 1 million subscribers in the future, because you definitely deserve it.
I’d have been very underwhelmed by that lunch! Thank you for reviewing so the rest of us can avoid it 😊 That baklava looked as dry as the desert! Happy weekend to you and the cameraman x
If you look up "Emperors New Clothes" in the dictionary there's a picture of Salt Bae! When the best thing about a restaurant flogging £500+ steaks is their mashed potato then there's problems!!
There’s nothing like rock salt sprinkled on a steak that was mixed with the sweat running down the arm of a sweaty unfit man that many would find nauseating 😂 This truly is an indication of greedy people charging whatever they want for a £30 steak to maximise profit, & there is always someone gullible enough willing to pay the extortionate inflated prices because they think it looks cool😂. Well done for showing it as no matter how much money I have to burn, I’d never go into a pretentious place like that just on principle.
I wonder how many "runners"(dine and dashers!! they get? If Gary had paid £630 for that steak .I would say the world and he himself had gone completely mad .None of that food however ,looked appetising and personally if I had paid 42 quid would have felt aggrieved.
I would never eat in an expensive restaurant like this, I would begrudge paying those already rich owners my hard earned cash. £680 for a steak!? Absolutely disgusting. You could buy a herd of cows for that! Ridiculous!
I have seen quite a few videos of people eating at Salt Bae's restaurants all around the World and the two things they all mention are the ridiculous prices and a lack of consistency (steaks will be overcooked or undercooked), and with his prices every piece of meat ought to be cooked to perfection every single time.
Great review as always. Was a bit scared you would go for the tomahawk ... all hell would have broken loose with the YT income "knockers" lol. Excellent content, thanks.
Not sure if you’ve been yet but if not, I’d suggest going to Temper City. Great place for live fire cooking and the steaks are delicious. Lots to choose from including Carnitas and Taco’s. It’s a treat not cheap location but we really enjoy going.
The plate the fillet was served on looked like something that came out of my mum's wooden sideboard back in the 70's. Thanks for another honest review Gary.
Hi Gary, I have never been and don't plan on going there either, as I have a problem with the pricing, hype and Salt Bae himself. But a colleague from the hospital went there with his wife on their anniversary and he almost had a heart attack, the bill for the two of them was almost 1900£. Just absurd if you ask me, but glad you reviewed it, as when you read off the main menu, the prices were just from another planet. 😅 I would eat a Hawksmoor any day before going th any of Sal Bae's restaurant. But I have to admit that what you ordered from the set menu looked good but quite small portions. Another fantastic review, mate and what a great review it was. Have a wonderful rest of your weekend, buddy and enjoy the summer! Speak to you when I am back in a bit over two weeks time! 😊
A tasteless starter, a tiny steak and a stodgy pud all for £39. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. 🤣 Yet another chef too big for his boots. Have a great weekend Gary. 😘
OMG Gary, those portion sizes are ridiculous. The main reminded me of when my kids were little and my dad asked what they wanted for tea one day. Fish Fingers ok boys?…yes they said excitedly. Dad dished them up Fish Fingers and nothing else. 25 years on and I still laugh about that 😂
Gary as always, thanks for the video. Sometimes, dine in out for a family. Is a rare treat. You have gave me some great advice and honest choices. Keep up the amazing work
"you need to see a doctor" was such a funny comment and so accurate about folk who swank about paying ridicdulos prices just to be seen in an upmarket cafe.
I'd be no good as a lottery winner going to these places. If my win was in the millions there is no way I'd pay much above what you paid for any of the steaks on the menu. One thing about coming from a humble background is that you know the value of these things instinctively, you also know when you are being taken for a ride. If you'd spent £39 buying a Greggs for yourself and a few homeless you'd have been more satisfied. So would the homeless and probably so would we. Another good review Gary.
I'm mean it's just principles if you truly have any lol. I would never intentionally let myself be taken for a mug and it makes feel like shit if ever happens, Doesn't matter if I have £500 or £5,000,000 in my bank account! This Bae guy will never get a penny of me that's for sure.
For the same price of the Tomahawk you could comfortably book a weekend return ticket to Istabul including hotel stay and eat a lot of much tastier and authentic Turkish cuisine, you might even have some change left over out of that £600.
Another fab and enjoyable video Gary. I think those rain drops were actually the restaurant owners tears as you exposed his overpriced and pretentious offerings!
People are missing a screw, even if they are rich, to pay such prices for that food. Even with the complementary photos of the owner everywhere. I'm not British and often British food looks a bit odd to me and expensive, but I love to watch your video's. Honest and unbiased to the point. Keep going Gary !!!

When I first saw that steak, I thought it was a piece of something else.
You're right ✅...
Always keep your eyes peeled ,for the hidden Gem ...
I’d agree with that comment because if a restaurant is busy they’re turning over the food every night so there’s nothing hanging around, so it’s always fresh.

Salt Bae is Turkish for "Prententious Upstart". Disgusting prices for below average food. I live in the UAE where the average Salt Bae customer has a million quid car and a half million quid watch. 690 quid for a steak isn't going to register as spending money. Fair play to the guy, though, he's a butcher who found a way to rinse the rich!

@GaryEats: Pleasure, pal.

This is simply one to avoid, totally overpriced and pretentious

I'm really happy you enjoyed it there, glad to hear it wasn't as expensive

Yep. You could definitely buy a whole bullock (steer) for that money. And butchered correctly, it'd feed a family of four for months.
If you look up "Emperors New Clothes" in the dictionary there's a picture of Salt Bae! When the best thing about a restaurant flogging £500+ steaks is their mashed potato then there's problems!!

There’s nothing like rock salt sprinkled on a steak that was mixed with the sweat running down the arm of a sweaty unfit man that many would find nauseating 😂
This truly is an indication of greedy people charging whatever they want for a £30 steak to maximise profit, & there is always someone gullible enough willing to pay the extortionate inflated prices because they think it looks cool😂. I have seen quite a few videos of people eating at Salt Bae's restaurants all around the World and the two things they all mention are the ridiculous prices and a lack of consistency (steaks will be overcooked or undercooked), and with his prices every piece of meat ought to be cooked to perfection every single time.

"you need to see a doctor" was such a funny comment and so accurate about folk who swank about paying ridicdulos prices just to be seen in an upmarket cafe.
I just think it’s overpriced and pretentious David why anyone would pay These prices is beyond me.
