    Got one from Amazon today, but thanks to reading/watching about it first, I also ordered magnets for tuning - and that works like a charm! ... Although I can't get my hand in the hole so I put them up top. Works too, they are powerful magnets and I can hit them directly without them moving. It doesn't look as good ok but you won't hear that on a recording.

    Looking fwd to you hopefully doing a video on your Komosky drum when it arrives. I have had mine (2sided field scale) and really enjoyed it up until the point of where somehow it fell out of tune unfortunately . I think I might give your lil magnet trick suggestion a try to see if I can reawaken the drum, thx for this video as Im trying to sharpen my musical mind 👍

    Ahhh... a Freezbee. Too funny. I just ordered one of those. It left the Ukraine a couple days ago. All I have to say is... where was this video 20 years ago when I needed it? LOL. This will be a great resource for a lot of folks. It's not just relevant to tongue drums but many many instruments. What a great way to illustrate it though. And I love the fact that you brought up flat 5 or as it's known... "the devil's interval". Ha ha.

    What are the different symbols on tongue drum sheet music. for example does a bracket over two numbers mean you are to play them together? A line that is under two numbers....what does that mean? How can I get these answeres

    Is there a reason you choose to revolve around the 3 and 1 #s for Phrygian? Those would be the root and 6th of E phyrgian rather than root and 5th. Same question about mixolydian, you say to revolve around 5 and 3 #s which would be 1st and 6th of G mixo

    Molly! Thank you so much for doing this video. I am self taught when it comes to music theory and I have always had a very hazy idea of modes. But this video really did break it down and I think by George I've got it ha ha.
    What I could also never understand was when I would hear "d dorian" but with what you taught here I realized it and then was able to have another light bulb moment. What if my tongue drum is in the key of D. (Which one of them is ) what is it the Dorian then. Well then I realized it has to be E Dorian because as you showed us the Dorian begins on the second degree of the scale and uses the same notes as the major scale from which it is derived and so the D major scale has two sharps. So therefore the Dorian scale in the Dmajor scale has to be E DOrian And it would be E FSHARP G A B CSHARP D AND back to E.
    I did a video a few years ago on the aklot Lyre harp and I know that it starts on the G note but continues along with no sharps or flats. I did "think" that it must be the mixolydian scale and might have even said it's a mode of the c scale. But with your video I understand why and that I don't have to say I think. Now I know it's the mixolydian scale but I can say it's the G mixolydian because its a scale that starts on the 5th degree of the c major scale but stating on G
    Woo hoo
    I am also happy that you've shed some light on the "unusual " names of some of my tongue drums. I can't wait to find out what my guida drum in equinox really is? Ha ha
    Thank you again. I enjoy your channel because we seem to have a lot of the same musical interests. Kale is another TH-cam friend that I found and I find it amazing how many of our videos dance around the same topics. Love TH-cam for this !
    I look forward to more of your mode videos and if I ever use them in my own video I will be sure to give you a shout out !! :) also enjoy your little ones the years go so fast. I smile when I hear your baby in the background. :)

      @@MusicalMollyKhan yeah!! So glad I got it. And I'm glad you like my channel too. I wanted to tell you about a great app. It's called TONALY and it shows the modes so I was using that to self check after I wrote to you. I must be a real nerd cause I actually like music theory. !! So for me that app is so fun used with the tongue drums. I just wish there were more hours I could devote to it. Seems as soon as I get started I'm needed for something else. And right on cue my husband just asked me for some computer help lol !!

    I find your videos very informative. I’m thinking of buying a tongue drum with 15 notes. Is it better to buy a drum in C or D major?

    • @MusicalMollyKhan
      @MusicalMollyKhan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! I think it depends on what you like. If you want to play popular tunes with others, C is a really common key. If you like Irish traditional music or play with string players, D is a common key in that area. If you prefer lower tones, the C will be lower by a smidge. You can play number tabs music easily on either one. I hope that helps 😊

      @@MusicalMollyKhan Thanks so much for your quick response. I ended up ordering one in D but think I would have preferred C. I couldn’t find one in C that would ship to Tanzania where I work at the moment. You have been so helpful. Thank you once again. I’ll continue to watch your posts.

    • @MusicalMollyKhan
      @MusicalMollyKhan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mariadavis8745 I think it depends on who you're ordering through. The drum itself is great, but I've heard of some people ordering it and receiving a different, much smaller drum. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. It's a good idea to use Amazon, EBay, Etsy, some company that will be willing to reimburse you if you don't get what you ordered.

    Your numbers are off. You often give the number for the modal 6th degree instead of the 5th degree. For example, at 10:01, you say the Phrygian Scale revolves around the tonic note 3 and the 5th degree of "ONE" you call it, but you shoul have said "7". And at 12:20, you say the Lydian tonic revolves around the note 4 and 2", but the fifth degree from the 4 is the ONE, not the 2. You should take time during your videos to count it out: 4, 5, 6, 7, 1.
