- The most epic boss fight ever, it gives the game something it didn't have before; a sort of challenging boss fight, unless you grinded characters a bit.
Luca Blight
6500 HP
To win as Viktor and Flik, damage him approx 2000 dmg in a set amount of time,
as the hero, you just need to finish him up.
Fliks party;
Nina; who knew that Nina, a schoolgirl who fights with a bookbelt, actually is very decent spellcaster? She scores above average in both magic and magic defense, and is one of five characters with the highest possible affinity with Fire. She is also a member of one of the more destructive unites (if built up to be so) with Flik. Her downfall is that she has average technique and fighting stats in general, and will therefore miss a lot.
Flik; warrior and mage hybrid, who scores above average in almost every "important" stat. Has only average stats in magic defense and HP, and below average luck. As a mage, he has an above average affinity with, not surprisingly Lightning. Overall a decent character.
Mikumiku; the squirrels usually have very low stats, and then excel at one. Mikumiku excels at speed, which is, practically, useless on its own. Has one free runeslot, but she can only use the Wind rune, and then she still has a 20% chance of backfiring. Avoid.
Viktors group;
Zamza; albeit unpopular, what he describes himself as is completely true. He is a good magician, and a good fighter, and can work as both. Above average strength and magic, and scores average og slightly above it in the other stats, with the exception of Luck, where he has below average. Has a rune permanently attached, which does double damage, but half of that damage to himself. This can be cancelled by putting a fire sealing rune on him, but I prefer to make him a mage with a Fire rune. He is one of five characters (like Nina), who gets the highest possible affinity with Fire.
Hai Yo; at this point of the game, he is a rubbish character with only average stats in every category. The same goes for his rune affinities, which are all average, excet two that are below average. Since he must be in the front line to fight, he will miss a lot when he hits, because of his average stats. Very, very late in the game, or in fact in levels that you normally wont acquire during ordinary gameplay, he will have 3 runeslots open, and can turn into a fighting beast.
Tengaar; a very sound mage, she has above average speed, magic, magic defense and luck. No real weaknesses, and therefore a good long ranged mage. Has very high affinities, and some average, but her high magic skill makes up for that.
Rious team;
Wakaba; has very high stats, especially in technique, strength, luck and speed. Will also get very high hitpoints. Has a personal rune with unlimited usage, that does double damage, but it can unbalance her. Has a surprisingly high affinity with Fire runes, but it is probably best to stick with her as a fighter.
Hanna; once again a very average, stereotype warrior, she has above average strength, technique and protection, but below average magic and only average magic defense. Does not get a very high amount of hitpoints for a front line warrior. Below average affinity with every rune, and will only have one open runeslot. Can use a shield to make up for her average HP.
Meg; very average stats, but above average technique and magic defense, and sports a godly high Luck stat, probably the highest in the game. This means she has one of the highest critical hit chances in the game, only beaten by the hero. Has a personal rune, Trick rune, which does 3x normal damage, but can only be used once. When it comes to affinities, she is very up and down, and you should avoid her using Fire, Earth and Resurrection runes. However, in Wind she is one of the three characters with the highest possible affinity, and with Lightning she is one of five with the highest possible affinity. So while she does not have a high magic stat, she can still dish out high amounts of damage.
Shilo; very surprising to most, he has the highest technique stat in the game, only tied with Clive. The rest of his stats are very forgettable, except for a very high luck stat aswell. This makes him very ideal for critical hits, especially when combined with a Killer rune. Has very low rune affinities, and will only have one runeslot open.

@@philithegamer8265 so due to the nature of RPGs you can grind out levels, gear, and dull any edge of difficulty , so alot of times and more so the big narrative foes who you will be fighting are at the end of the game where you have had ample time to be broken, so the mechanics of the fight fail to deliver of the narrative threat the BBEG is given.
but due to the nature of when in this game, and the mechanics of the sequence the amount of effort it takes to end the walking wild fire that is Luca Blight fells adiquite to how the narrative was trying to make us feel about him ,
this video leaving out how you have to win a war game before the standard boss fights start, and how even after the boss fight you need to fight him in a dual , so you need to send an army to soften him up and cut him down to just his immidate tropes, jump him with 3 groups, and then dual him , and all that effort mechaincally feels matching to what the story made it sound like it would take to put this man in the ground
@@stupogo0 True. This was probably the hardest boss fight in the whole game. I remember he was a beast to fight against. I'm going through Suikoden 2 again and I'm not looking forward to doing this battle again.

This game and premise is based on the 16th century classical Chinese novel, "Shui Hu Zhuan" which is very similar to some of the books I read. Truth be told, I feel guilty about not westernizing these novels before Game of Thrones came out. I would have made so much money

If you're going to take that stance then you can say game of thrones is based on the war of the roses which predates that novel by a century.

The best thing about Luca's effect on the story is that the war went on even after his death. All it took was a little push and it spun the world into chaos.
This brings back memories. I used to have a grinding ritual before taking on Luca.
Before this fight, I would take my party in groups to the forest between Banner Village and Gregminster (where the hidden Ninja village is located), then grind until everyone was level 40. After all that grinding, I usually had enough cash to get all my main people to their highest weapon level, plus outfitted with the best armor at that level.
Even then, this was no cakewalk. Luca was no joke. He doesn't get enough credit in terms of the best boss fights in RPG history. It takes three full, well armed teams, a cavalcade of arrows and a duel to bring him down -- and each time he's capable of wiping you out if you don't play it smart.

In most RPGs you assemble a party of versatile warriors, but about half of them are relegated to the side lines because of technical reasons (party size limit), so they end up feeling like dead weight.
Suikoden II was the first game which, in my opinion, dared to break this unwritten rule with Luca Blight's boss battle. Yes, you still have a limited party size, but the way this fight is structured makes it abundantly clear that not even your A team is strong enough to bring him down on their own. And it's not like Luca Blight is a demigod, the incarnation of evil, or the holder of some world shattering power, Luca is just a mortal man and it still takes your entire freaking army and one hell of a desperate gamble to finally kill him!

Haha, I did random party members, so Viktors party got 4 S-range characters... Decided to sacrfice him because of this crappy technique and tendency to miss a lot on Luca.

Indeed, even after he was pummeled with arrows, he just wouldn't die until you conquered him in a one-on-one duel. Holy shit, I hated fighting him for that reason alone. His death speech showed how psychotic he truly was.

Luca Blight is one of the best and well written video game villians In my opinion if not the best he just gives you goosebumps,
what's worse is, he's just a normal guy in terms of Suikoden.
He's not a True Rune bearer, and in fact doesn't actually use runes. per the writers, he uses a flammable oil on his blade for all those fire attacks.
Luca Blight is so OP that it took your entire army, then 18 of your best warriors, then rains of arrows, and finally, a one-on-one duel with your hero to finally bring him down.

every rune got "mark" above the head , its confirmed in some konami forum that he's not a rune user , he just burn his sword up with fire

First time I fought this guy, it took 30 minutes across 15 retries. He is still the hardest boss I ever faced.
How this guy isn’t the final boss is beyond me.
He is the main antagonist that defeated in middle last of the story.
What a badass fight, and one that I'll fondly remember for years.
luca is the most resistent boss and badass i"ve ever fight in any RPG story..he got 3 fight and bunch of arrow in her body and can still fight par one on one with hiro..even shu genius tactic doesnt match again luca bruteness..what an epic boss..and dont forget that luca past is soo painfull that he become like this

this boss was somewhat challenging. he was my favorite boss to fight in any other rpg no joke
I remember fighting this dude as a kid :D there was always a feeling of fear in the air whenever he appeared... in the end it took the best tactician and an army to take him down. But even then he refused to just die and dashed onward for a duel with his last breath. This was amazing

This battle is memorable, all the time before this I did not took runes seriously, both magic and weapon runes. And I thought I was breezing through the game, then when I reached this fight I was totally wiped out by Luca's speed and damage, like I was slapped by a sudden difficulty spike, I almost gave up, until I fiddled around with the runes and accessories for the parties and gained a coupled of levels, it was still a rough battle but It felt I had a fighting chance!

Hi I completed suikoden 2 a few months ago. I played like 5 hours everyday for 1 week and recruited about 100 of the 108 stars of destiny. I love nanami but she always made me sad when she would cry over ryu and jowy fighting. lol. :)

Most memorable boss battles. Out of all of the characters there are only 3 that would beat the hell out of Luca one on one: Ryou, Flik and Viktor. Partially because of plot but mostly because of their strength and skill.

Third party is confusing. I put Oulan and Rio in the central row, someone from S's with shield and decent MDEF on the front sides (Anita, Camus), and good magic users + L's (Tengaar, Rina) on the rear sides. Luca has ZERO chances, even with stars' levels around 36-38.
Though this setup is rather interesting, too.
+Дмитрий Маначин Haha, in this video I just used random characters. I used a random list generator. :p But as you say, as long as the characters are around level 38ish, Luca doesn't stand a chance.
Your setup sounds like a good plan though, especially the MDEF people on the front row. I always forget and place one low mdef character on the front row, like Humphrey, and he gets slaughtered (barely saved by high HP).

Good video, not sure about your team setup though. Hai Yo always a good pickup, and you could've made the fight much easier if you abused Shiro and Flik right. But seeing the minimal damage that Luca did, you probably grinded quite a bit for this section. Good effort, and you made it through easily in the end. :)
As with every boss fight video, characters are chosen at random. Hence why Viktor for an example was placed in the back row, and why Mikumiku found her way in there somehow.. Fliks usefulness was sacrifised to power up Nina with their unite, since Luc was in the same party and functions better than Flik as a Lightning mage.
Shiro is totally useless, so Im not really sure how you can abuse him though? Im a bit curious now, so please elaborate! If he hits in hand to hand, he will just miss, so I really thought that Lightning rune was the way to go since he has normal affinity with it.
Larsy Shiro can do ridiculous damage with a double strike and double beat rune. He's usually fast enough to take out groups of monsters in one attack turn
mooseclamps As far as my memory takes me, Shiro only has one rune slot, which means he can only have one of those runes. I'll admit, Shiro has good stats for a fighter, much better than most pure fighter characters. So he will in general get more critical hit and multi hits, which is good.
But against Luca? Not useful in hand to hand. Lucas counter rate is very high, which combined with Shiros mediocre HP and no equipment (even with his special animal Protection growth, his overall protection is smaller than even back row fighters at this point) that Shiro will get slaughtered.
No matter how you build Shiro up, he will end up the "average minus" class when it comes to physical damage. He will, because of his good stats, have better chances for multiple attacks and for critical hits, but for me it's just not not enough. When compared to almost any human character, he loses. :(
I know Shiro is popular and all, but for me he is just like Georg and Pesmerga in this game.

You're right he does only get one. I'm not sure what the OP meant about the 'Shiro exploit' or whatever either. Just saying I think he's a pretty strong character especially after you first recruit him. :D
I wasn't really talking about a Shiro exploit, but more or less just abuse the high damage output that Shiro can pump out against enemies. IIRC, counters only happen if you miss, and I don't know if I'm just lucky or what but I've never had an issue where Shiro died to Luca's counter.
And to reply to @Larsy, the reason Pesmerga and Georg are popular is that they have strong stats and they do look cool. Problem is that they don't offer much in terms of customization cause of their limited rune slots. If you don't care/use runes much then they're still good enough for most people. But if you want to Munchkin your way through, Hai Yo and Sheena are definitely the way to go, with their 3 rune slots.
I just realized after all this time I've never seen HaiYo in a battle. Just look at that sprite animation! lol
People said Hai Yo is a jobber but some calculation suggested if you build him well he'll surpasses even Pesmerga.
@@SillyDeal1604 pretty much any character that have 3 rune slot surpass pesmerga even Georg. Any decent fighter with 3 rune slot like killey, Kahn, Sheena, Sid, chaco including Hai yo. It's just take forever for them to unlock all the rune slot.
This bastard was more difficult than the final boss. In fact id say he's one of the most difficult jrpg bosses ive ever fought. It only took 3 tries and a lot of grinding to take him down, but even then i only had one character (luc) alive who used some bomb thing that did 600 damage. If i would not have used that im pretty sure i would have died

He is hard but not very hard. Reasonably hard as he is a capable villain.
The only other bosses that had me was the undead spider at Tinto when you found Neclord and the Beast Rune. Hell, Beast Rune was so unforgiving with 3 attacks per turn and it could heal itself if you're not fast enough. 😭
Not hard with the proper preparation. Otherwise this is the hardest fight in the game hands down. But if you knew to load up on fire emblems (IMO the best accessory in the game) when you had access, then that makes a world of difference here. Considering not only the strength boosts, but fire resistance and IIRC you can equip 3 per person. Also grinding up those characters you're gonna use makes this much easier - which you'd usually do if you knew this fight was coming.
If you where playing the game a bit more normally - for the most part sticking to a few favorite characters and not overly grinding anyone else while advancing the story at a decent pace, this fight is something else. In which case those first 2 parties are gonna get wiped out and you'll have it harder for the last party. The devs did an amazing job balancing this into a rough but winnable fight for most players on their first play though (and not using a FAQ/guide).
And this was the moment the Highland Army knew they lost the war.

Could be intentional, though Lu Bu was never downright evil like Luca, in history or in games. Dishonorable sure, but never does anything truly evil.

Actually, Luca is based on Xiang Yu, and the overall story of Suikoden 2 is based on the story of him and Liu Bang, the latter of whom became the first emperor of the Han Dynasty.
Murayama, the creator of the mainline Suikoden series, has stated that he split Xiang Yu into Luca (who got his ruthlessness and amazing strength in battle) and Jowy (who got his "tragic hero" side).
Yes, Lu Bu is known for his strength just like Xiang Yu, but he is more known in Chinese history and legends for constantly betraying everyone he has worked for, betraying his first boss for a red horse and betraying his father figure over a woman.

poor miku-miku, just 'paw' once, missed the attack, and then dead. Victor back row just being the cheerleader, shiro casting lighting and tengaar casting charm arrow for luca. Riou's line up a bit boring, you need to bring either Tuta or muku-muku on Riou's party. Anyway, I love your strategy boy !!! XD
The thought of attaching a rune on shiro and having him casting said rune on a friggin boss fight never crossed in my mind.
Hey, was he a good mage?
With a lightning rune he is totally average, and thats pretty much the best mage he can be. Stick him with Lightning or Wind, the rest is pretty sucky on him. Against Luca who has very high stats, I find that Shiro does way more damage with a rune (especially lightning as it does haevy dmg against single enemies naturally) than with physical attacks, where he hits just half the time on Luca and gets countered a lot.

Despite my frustration for the last third of Suikoden II, this was one of the best fights I've ever had in games period.
Memory's a little fuzzy, but I remember the gist of it. Flik's party had Rina, Ellie, Bolgan, Nina, and Stallion and immediately things got off shaky. This brute hits up to three times and chooses to rock Bolgan with two of em, he's already down to little health and gets hit on counter, still alive though. Ellie and Rina drop their crappy wind magic and do pathetic damage, but at least Flik's lighting did something good. Fortunately Stallion dropped some defense on Bolgan after the onslaught which allowed him to survive long enough for Rina to throw a heal his way. A bit back and forth, but the fight goes well and next up is Victor.
This party is really vague, but I believe I had Rikimaru, Viki, Kinnison, and Hix. I say vague because despite knowing what to expect, we got creamed pretty bad. Viktor kept missing, Rikimaru's doing okay, Viki's dealing okay damage, but otherwise we got wrecked and to my surprise, the game continued on despite dying...kool.
I should add at this point, I'm unaware of the extra HP Luca's carrying right now, I figured there was some consequence for failing with Viktor's party, but I didn't know what it was. Riou's party has Shiro, Kasumi, Luc, Nanami, and Kahn and it feels like this is in the bag. Shiro's got double attack, Kasumi's got that Hayabusa piledriver, Luc's a bonafide healer with Riou, we got this. Starts off well, Shiro with a stat buff from Riou means heavy damage (assuming it doesn't miss) and to my despair I find out that Kasumi can miss with that attack here. Shiro goes down because of bad luck in targeting, which means Kasumi gets forced to the front row (BAD) and promptly gets wrecked herself. Kahn got unlucky with healing (Luca went before Luc) and dropped, which left just Luc, Nanami, and Riou. Fortunately Luc got to use most of his magic by this point, but sadly with no defense he goes down too and this fight is beginning to feel endless. Riou's health gets really low, so I start trying to use what few items I have while he guards and think, okay full health, Nanami hit em while you can then Riou will give it his all. She swings and does like 50 damage and Luca falls...no words can describe that relief and satisfaction, especially after learning the handicap I gave myself with Viktor failing.

It took him becoming a Demi-god to be able to handle something Luca did while just an ordinary human. This is what makes Luca so badass to Suikoden players. He didn't have a True Rune, wasn't possessed or aided by some Supernatural Force.
He was just simply a really powerful and capable fighter. If he had had a True Rune the fight would've turned out very different.
I don't know about that. Wiegraf was insanely powerful with his Lightening Stab and Ramza was a far better fighter than whoever this little shrimp in Suikoden is. Plus Ramza's teammates like Agrias and Mustadio were better fighters than Suikoden characters.

Different battle systems. If we were to give them similar abilities who'd be stronger than who? Then there's also there personalities as well.
Wiegraf tried to explain away his motives for why he tossed out his beliefs. Luca gave no fucks.
When faced with death, Wiegraf made a deal with the devil (literally). Luca, again, gave no fucks and laughed in the face of death.
Even if there was a death battle, and even if they wrote it Wiegraf wining (the guys are human as well so they have their own biases) Luca still wins in pure badassery.
Will konami make suikoden 6 or remake
No. They're too busy raking in hundreds of millions with gacha games and pachinko machines. Console gaming is all but dead in Japan, so Konami jumped ship as soon as they realized they could make more with mobile and gambling machines.

You can absolutely do it without this setup! Just load your save file and do some grinding, especially in the forest behind Banner village.

Everything is not perfect. Each of them has its own weaknesses and strengths but I actually based their strong abilities in magic attack, magic def, attack and physical def AND in army battles.
Regarding Pesmerga, I think He's one fine swordsman. Mostly used for frontline attack and he got Rage rune embedded in his sword. I also think he is mysteriously strong since he is in pursuit of Yuber.
To Viki, if equipped with right armor and acceccories, she's one great damager. I witness this when I equipped her with Flowing rune. Her magic attack damage rose.

AbidingGamer I know I’m a year late on this but Zamza with a Fire sealing rune makes his own rune even better.
i faced luca solo on final stage all you needed was fire sealing and earth rune cast def buff on yourself 3x and counter and you beat the living fuck out of luca casting no spells on him or healing on your self
