    On the London Underground, I used to buy a ticket to Mill Hill The Hale, a station that closed in 1939 (it was the one after Mill Hill East) and used it on the bus. The facility only lasted until the track was lifted for the M1 to be built in the early '60s.

    Norton Bridge, Stone, Barlaston and Wedgwood were served by a single unit shuttling between Stafford and Stoke, the service was withdrawn because there was nowhere to put the unit out of the way at Stoke and the cost of improved trackwork was not justified. Norton Bridge was an island platform accessed by a footbridge, this became unsafe so the station was closed.The junction at Norton Bridge was rebuilt as a flying junction so moving the track away from the existing platform. Services to Stone were reinstated when the Birmingham to Liverpool service started. Wedgwood was for pottery workers to travel from Stoke.

      Cornbrook on the Manchester Metrolink used only to be for interchange between lines when it first opened, but now it has a street entrance. Smallbrook Junction on the Isle of Wight is only for interchange between the electric trains and the preserved Isle of Wight Steam Railway, with no external public access. Berney Arms in East Anglia has no vehicular access, but can be accessed on foot or by boat. Corrour station on the West Highland line has no road access, but there are private tracks and it is about a mile's walk from Loch Ossian youth hostel.

      And don’t forget Middlewood station! Until the 1960s the station had two levels (like Tamworth today) and there was no pedestrian access into the station, so it could only be used for interchanges. When the high-level line was closed, Middlewood obviously lost its purpose as an interchange, so it would have been easy to just close the station completely… but instead, to better serve the local area, the closed line’s trackbed was used as the access footpath, finally giving the remaining low-level station an entrance!

    I'll have to add these two to my list of stations I need to visit. Usually I don't try to tick off stations if my only option (on that day) is a replacement bus service. But given these are only ever "served" by buses (stopping somewhere nearby), that'll have to do.
    Maybe I'll drive to one, get the bus to the other, and walk back, next time I'm in that area.
    Ideally I'd buy a proper rail ticket from another station.

    Actually it's not so weird.
    In Bristol, since First Bus and GWR are both under the First Group, in any case where train service is suspended, you can get on replacement bus operated by First Bus. And alternatively you can use the train ticket on any First Bus routes that head to that bus stop, as long as the ticket goes to a station on the route of the bus.
    If the bus company had agreement with the train company, then it's sensible to let passengers make use of a more frequent route.

    • @DylanSargesson

      That there's a rail replacement bus is not weird - but that it's been that way for 20 years is.
      You'd think in that time (especially with the physical conditiom of the platforms being as bad as they are) that the stations would've been officially closed, and people just expected to buy a bus ticket if they wanted to get to/from those places.

  • @TheosTrainsWalesOfficial

    A good idea for these closed stations would be to re-open them as tram stations. TFW are getting some tram-trains for my local line (South Wales Valley Lines), so I say they get some tram-trains for this section, and re-open the closed stations mentioned as metro stations.

    As I live nearby it is an odd one, and if you go to Stone on a return you can also get the bus back even if you've taken the train there, not forgetting to go to the bus stop not the train station. Talking of which I never really know why the bus doesn't stop outside the station, I'm sure that's what a replacement service is meant to do?! Both stations were side-lined after the west coast line upgrade and really should have been re-opened. The London Midland service could stop at these stations but they'd need a lot of work and around 100K a year maintenance costs. There's no appetite for that at the moment, but the HS2 cash might come into play. You might as well reopen both if you're going to do, we'll see! Really could only happen here with our public transport last policy. It's a shame Norton Bridge was fully closed, but the changes at the location meant this station just wasn't feasible any more. The changes involved building a whole flyover section and including a station would have meant it had to be fully rebuilt elsewhere.

      And now it's been scaled back even further to only go as far as Stafford.

Popular as it was a low cost way to get to London on a stopping service that made commuting between towns on the Trent Valley a great option. Now Stoke is cut right off from the rest of the county without a change at Stafford and it's grand plan to be at the end of the truncated HS2. As a former Station Manager (down south) I would say if the stations aren't served by a TOC then there's nobody responsible for changing the posters, maybe Network Rail should step forward and update them... as for reopening, I cannot see it happening as there doesn't seem to be a demand anymore and the paths for stopping trains have probably disappeared too. I also wonder how the RSP works for paying the bus company their share of your train ticket! Great video but you have left me with unanswered questions about the railways over a decade since I left them... 😂

    • @AbsoluteTVYT
      @AbsoluteTVYT 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      While there's no services serving the station, the station is still managed by West Midlands Trains (company who run the LNWR brand), so they're responsible for updating the station information boards.
      ORCATS probably has some fun with that ticket, but I'd imagine Network Rail simply pay £x/year for acceptance by the local bus rather than actually allocating revenue from the tickets themselves.

    • @seraphina985
      @seraphina985 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AbsoluteTVYTPresumably, I know of a similar situation if the line between Birmingham and Stourbridge gets shut down the local National Express West Midlands bus service from Brimingham to Stourbridge would take the train tickets. I've seen them have this up within a matter of minutes of the last service running during an unplanned closure due to flooding. That makes me think there must have been some kind of contingency contract already in place. Probably something along the lines of a retainer agreement with an annual fee and pre set marginal fees per hour or day in which the service is called upon. I would have thought that it would probably be contracted by the franchisee with the legal obligation to provision that service including presumably contingencies since they are the ones assuming the burden of a duty to provision.

This has now stopped but it’s not been officially closed because the site of the factory is earmarked for redevelopment but nothing has yet come to fruition. There used to be signs on the platform that said “This station is for staff and contractors only. The area outwith the platform is private property” in other words if you don’t need to be here, don’t be😂😂 it’s seen better days now thanks to vandalism.

    Barlaston railway station should be rebuilt and to be reused and to be renamed as Barlaston and Wedgwood with Wedgwood station to be dismantled as it’s not really a railway station. Have you been to Polesworth that is also on the West Coast Main Line just north of Rugeley Trent Valley and it only has one platform in use heading north.

    • @goldstraw360
      @goldstraw360 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The problem at Barlaston is the non-existent parking. Until recently, Wedgwood would have been the better choice of the two to re-open as it had a car park already there (originally used as overspill for the Wedgwood factory). Unfortunately, Network Rail has missed that particular bus (pardon the pun) as the land has been sold off by Wedgwood and will be used as part of a new canal marina being built there.

      Oddly, you can't actually buy a ticket between the two stations explicitly. Probably because it's much more logical to just pay the bus fare.

      @@NickBadley There is a fare you just need to find a ticket machine that will issue it. The apps won't because they try to plan the journey and fail to find any trains. London Overground Ticket machines have a Tickets from Another Station button for these very occasions.
