nothing better than working through a difficult repair and eventually nailing it - well done.

Simon, you are now qualified to carry out any and all repairs. As I mentioned previously, it was going to be a difficult job, and you have done an outstanding repair.

You’re hitting your stride with this kind of content I think. Great to see your obvious delight at the DIY fix and rightly so.

Great fix. Once a year, lubricate the cable, & tracks for it, so it stays operational. I'm just waiting for a good day to do the one in my W116.

So at the end of last year I brought a 1992 Mercedes 260E W124, in hopes to restore it at some point, right now it's winter so can't get much done. But this channels given me the motivation to continue with it! Looking forward to seeing your finished car!

Admire your work. My car just has had the sunroof sealed up by previous owner. Maybe if it were a C126 it would be worth keeping the sunroof. But on a US$3K car my focus is on the engine, transmission and suspension. Still admire your work! amazing! Best regards 1989 MERCEDES-BENZ 260 E (124.026)

Great job. The question I have is how many hours did you spend on this job and what was the cost?
I had a fault with my air conditioner panel in the centre console of my 91 BMW 535i.
I bought a replacement panel on line off a guy who had bought the wrong thing for his car - $100.
Took me about 5 hours to get the panel out....... sprayed some contact cleaner on contacts..... tested the original panel and it now worked......
Reinstalled it which took me about 4 hours.
Lots of googling and you tubing but got their in the end and now I have a spare Ac panel.. all good.
Like you with the sunroof I could not believed I had worked it out..... oh what a feelin lol.

I fixed my sunroof in my 190e by downloading an on demand video from Mercedessource. No need for all that mess.

Thank you for your video but you did nt need to touch the headlining.Theres an m8 nut on the motor in the boot/trunk that you can work with a ratchet. Its there for situations like this.Once the sunroof is open you can access everything.Lots of videos on here showing how...I have 3 diesel w124 and have done it too.

  • @derekheeps8012

You absolutely do not need to remove the entire headlining .
I am about to do the same job on my W124 estate ( my fifth ) , and having worked on previous 124s , 201s and 126s , I know how it goes .
All you need to do is remove the trim panel from underneath the sunroof , which normally needs the roof opened .
I simply sourced another trim panel from eBay before starting (£20) then destroyed my existing one by pulling it down in the middle where the two sections meet , this allowed it to come away at the sides , and the press studs at the front popped out .
So much easier than removing the whole headlining , and I have a perfect roof panel in the correct fabric to put back afterwards .

It's pretty easy to remove the sliding trim panel without damaging it.

Last year I almost bought a 1987 300E here in Canada. Looks like the same colours. Instead, I bought a 1999 Toyota Camry and a 2005 Ford Mustang Convertible.

Great fix. I assume you never did this job before, even more impressive. the aftermarket liftarms are known for beeing crap. But you are lucky because OEM parts are still available. I'm in a constant worry the sunroof in my W126 will fail. the 126 liftarms are sold out for years now and the 124 parts don't fit. at least not without modifcations. Btw. as a german i had a little chuckle every time you said "Gleitpaste".
I'm looking forward to more W124 videos

My German pronunciation is generally quite good (I will explain why another time) but this seemed like a portmanteau of German and English…! Hence the mixed pronunciation!

what a stellar job you performed... by any chance would you know whether the sunroof parts are identical to the w140 S-Klasse, one of my lift arms gave up after 31 years.. disappointing quality 😂😂😂, I have the same problem on my S124 by the way so very happy to have learned from your video... now I have to wait till spring comes along in Holland as I have to work outside 😫

    • @derekheeps8012
      @derekheeps8012 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

They are similar ; the W201 190 series , W124 , W126 ( early ones are slide only like the W116 ) and W140 all have basically the same design , but the dimensions are different with 190 sunrooves being smaller and S-Class ones being bigger . There are repair kits on eBay as complete sets of all the mechanical parts - I just paid approx £60 for the kit for my W124 and about to do it now summer is here

I just started mine , I will photograph everything before dismantling. There are four small nuts , two each side , which allow the sunroof panel to be lifted out , after that the mechanism should be visible .
