  • Legendary jazz musician Herbie Hancock has written his memoir, 'Herbie Hancock: Possibilities.'
The 14-time Grammy winner and Oscar winner shot to fame in the 1980s for his musical prowess. With Miles Davis as his mentor, the musician learned to cross boundaries and embrace all music.
"He explored and wanted his new musicians to explore new territory. He was about the essence of jazz: sharing, challenging each other, respecting each other," said Hancock.
The follower of Buddhism is influenced by his faith even in his music.
"My religious beliefs open everything up about me as a human and how I look at the rest of the world," said Hancock.
Back in the 1990s, Hancock hit rock bottom.
"I had a problem with smoking crack. I tried to stay away as much as possible. It was curiosity that made me try it the first time. It was cocaine, I knew cocaine, until the first time I did it I said oh no I should never had done this. Three months later I did it again. Then three months… I tried to keep it apart from my music and apart from my family but little by little it got better," said Hancock.
He'll be signing copies of his new book on Oct. 28 at Barnes & Noble, Broadway at 82nd St., Manhattan; and on Oct. 29 at BAM Rose Cinemas, 30 Lafayette St., Brooklyn, at 6:30 p.m.
