Lakitu Cloud Adoption

  • I demonstrate lakitu cloud adoption. Warning: This video contains rapid pausing, leading to flashing lights.
Lakitu cloud adoption is a glitch performed as follows:
    (1) Unload a lakitu on the same frame that you deactivate him from moving 4000 units away from him.
    (2) On the next frame, load an object into the lakitu's object slot.
The result of this is that the lakitu's cloud doesn't unload but instead considers that new object to be its parent. In the video, I do this using a 100 coin star. Unfortunately, this doesn't really lead to anything useful.
Lakitu cloud adoption was first discovered by bad_boot ( / @bad_boot ) years ago, but never done in practice. But Scarlas ( / @scarlas7071 ) recently brought it up again, which got me interested in it. Thus, I investigated a way to pull it off, and then did it.
Note that lakitu cloud adoption is yet another adoption-type glitch, like pupil adoption ( • LLL Pupil Adoption on ... ) and spiny adoption ( • I Jumped Around in Wat... ).
Note that I wrote a brute forcer to calculate the optimal PU movement. Here's my code: pastebin.com/hTXZ27Ny
Aside: I think it's interesting that pulling off lakitu cloud adoption involved exploiting several other glitches in the process, like cloning, hands-free holding, pause-buffered hitstun, interference clones, fly guy gradual rise, backwards long jumps, and PU movement with overflow jumps. It reminds me of how in mathematics, proving a new thing often involves using existing proofs from other people. So in the case of sm64, we're pulling off new glitches using the knowledge of all other glitches that has accumulated over the years from many different people.

Yup, it's stacking tools on each other. The game interface hands the player a limited set of tools designed to work together in a harmonious way, with heavy restrictions on how the player gets to manipulate the game's data, analogous to how real people have heavy restrictions on how they can manipulate the world around them in a given moment. Then people figure out loophole after loophole, new ways to manipulate the game's data in unintended ways. And since games typically have pretty limited sets of data - object positions, states, movement vectors, etc. - when you throw wide the door to manipulating some of this data, it often has broad applications.
Then if you have multiple tools, each of which can be used in a bunch of situations, the possibilities for direct manipulation of data compound, until you can do pretty much whatever you can dream up. Up to and including hijacking the code itself and writing your own code.

One of my favorite parts of mathematics is how you can have a very simple problem that has an insanely complicated solution. I was surprised to see the Lakitu going down, even though this game has been broken beyond belief, there are many features that probably many players wouldn't notice, that are part of the designed intended logic of the game, such as what the Lakitu was doing, that still had an important part in this video to be featured.

It's because these early 3D (early 2D ones too for that matter) games didn't have real reusable engines, and they (more or less) needed to make unique engine for each game, and doing this makes them have unique quirks, especially when everything needs to be optimized just to be able to run with playable framerate. This doesn't mean that modern games can't have many bugs as well though, but it's definitely easier to not to make them, since you already have good stable engines that games run on top on.

Entity hierarchy is something I've been using in my own game's development. It's very useful in my case, as I can make the child entity's position data be relative to the parent entity, which means that if the child has no movement of its own, its overall movement will match the parent exactly. This allows creating large complex meta-entities with multiple moving parts. The hazard is that the entity hierarchy link is stored as a reference, and if that reference gets interfered with, very strange things can happen!

I haven't ever regretted following your channels Pannenkoek, and I'm not about to start regretting it now. Your love for SM64 is actually really moving. PU-moving even.

I think it's safe to say that Pannenkoek knows more about SM64 than the developers at this point

Stuff like these may be completely useless to any goal but it's still interesting to see how much you can squeeze out of the engine even if it is entirely for fun (i.e. without any real goal).

He has a method for time travel but it requires setting the HOLT in the future, so can't yet be done in practice.

Knowing (some parts of) the history of this game, I'm sure some brilliant complicated strat will be found at some point in the future that somehow relies on this, or at least builds on it. Useless discoveries have a tendency to not stay useless forever with this game.

This was very interesting to see, especially with the very complex and masterful techniques required! Thank you very much for demonstrating this.
