When Stevie played he entered into a different plane off existence. That is evidenced when watching him play and when we see him come back to this level and acknowledge one of his band mates. It was effortless for him to re-enter his creative plane. Stevie was able to wholly immersed himself in the music and anticipate how he was going to play the tune several bars in advance of doing it. He became one with the music and his guitar. His intimacy and familiarity with his guitar was like having an extra appendage. That too is evidenced when we see that he never had to look at the fret board to know where to place his hands and fingers. It was hyper instinctive and intuitive for him to do so.

I watch this and I want to cry. I was at Alpine Valley in East Troy for his final concert August 1990. Later that night his chopper slammed into the side of the ski hill. It was very foggy that night. We lived 35 miles from the venue and had to drive home so slowly due to bad visibility. I had a huge crush on Stevie Ray when I was a young girl. My younger brother introduced me to his music. Still with me in spirit.
As far as I know, his older brother Jimmie gave him his first guitar.
This particular performance is from Austin City Limits. The longest running music show in the history of TV....courtesy of PBS, broadcast every Saturday night.
I've lived through Morrison, Joplan, Hendrix, Lennon all dying so young. Stevie Ray's death hit me really hard though. 😪😪😪

SRV is my favorite of all-time. . .And yes, he could rock it like no other. . .BUT to fully appreciate his talent PLEASE give a listen to his slow and so beautiful renditions of "Lennie" and "Riviera Paradise". . .They are slow ballads that Stevie plays with so much feeling and sensitivity that you may be surprised that he could not only rock but also really infuse subtle emotion into his playing. He wrote "Lennie" as a tribute to his wife. . .Just beautiful.

2:16 . . See that string bend he's doing there?
For the non-guitar players out there, , Stevie used 13-gauge strings. HEAVY DUTY thick strings. .
Most players use 9 or 10-gauge strings, thinner and lighter in size and thickness. .
In order to bend those strings THAT much you would need to have hands as strong as the HULK!
That's like bending steel rebar with your fingertips!!

  • @MontagAdd
    @MontagAdd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Stevie was both an innovator and a survivor. He conquered both substance abuse and alcoholism before he passed. His musical legacy is staggering. Stevie used powerful strings - .013 (high E) to .058 or even .060 (low E). Most musician's fingers would have frayed using those strings. ALL his music rocks. SUGGESTION: TRY Little Wing and watch his face. His soul, and I think Janis' soul, musta got together up there ... 'cause we've got Beth Hart down here now. Amen.

So, I also think it's really hazardous to say that anyone A) "played better than Jimi" or that B) "performed a Jimi performance better than Jimi" but I would submit that it happened exactly twice...this song and Little Wing by SRV as well. Stevie had the unique ability to channel from his heart and mind directly to the fret board, no translation...straight, clear conduit. I personally think it's that same ability that also allowed him to Channel Jimi at the same time and that THAT is why those performances are so seminal and worthy of being "better" than the Jimi version. He was playing for both of them.

  • @rogeratkinson592

I remember when Jimi Hendrix burst on the scene blowing away the "guitar gods" of the day. It was the late 60's and to this day you will not find Hendrix tribute bands and the prime reason no one had the control the feedback he did. Also he wrote what he played. Stevie Ray Vaughan was as close to Hendrix's talent that I have heard over the years (I'm 71). I just rank SRV just behind Hendrix. But of we are in the now and if you are talking guitarists where do you rank Kanami?

He's playing 13 gauge strings. Everyone else uses 9 or 10. They aren't supposed to bend that way. With a high action. The space between the strings and frets. Learned all that from another reactor who tried to play a replica set up has SRV #1. The one you're seeing.

Yes, one of the best. His Idol was Jimi Hendrix. Now can you see if they was playing together. I would have seen these two play.

I hear Clapton said that even he had to pull off to the side of the road whenever SRV came on the radio....

As far as live versions of this song, the Woodstock one is by far the best. I love SRV and he does this song justice adding his personality to the song, however for me Jimi’s is better. ✌🏾✌🏾✌🏾

Jamal Kareem my favorite version is the one he sang on Austin city limits. He was clean and on top of his game. Stevie was blowing the roof off after he got clean.

Is this where SRV goes to the Blues in contrast to Jimi going to the psychedelic?

Better than Jimi, without doubt! In my opinion, Stevie is the GREATEST Blues Guitarist to ever grace this Earth!
