Hey Marc great topic and vid. I have had hand pays at my local tribal casinos. Two of those casinos do have stickers on the machines that say "machines are set to 80% pay back", doesn't sound too average. Thanks
Are you sure it says "Machines are set to 80% pay back" and not, "Machines are set to at least 80% pay back?" The former is typically what tribal casinos put on machines.
I've had a questionable experience with a roulette wheel at a tribal casino in Michigan (4 winds New Buffalo). I had $20 on 23 ball went in went around the wheel 180° and bounced out. I prefer going to state run casinos in Indiana.

In Oregon, they are all tribal casinos (I think) and I haven’t had a single hand pay at 1,000s of $10+ bets so I guess the payout percentage depends on the jurisdiction and mostly on luck.
You answered your own question @ the 6:30 mark. They can do whatever they want as far as RTP % at least in Alabama, where there is no state gaming commission that I'm aware of since gambling is illegal in all forms in our backwards state. I've been to an indian casino twice and they were horrible, never again. I only gamble where there is a state gambling commission.
They still have state restrictions - when I mentioned they can do whatever they want, they still have to comply with tribal and state gaming pact rules and regulations. Another thing to consider, manufacturers don't even build payback %'s that are lower than 80% anymore.
There are four tribal casinos in my small Northern California county. The good thing is they all are actual slot machines. I went to an Indian Casino in San Leandro (Bay Area) that is all the other type "slot" machines. That is, they are really bingo machines, where you are playing bingo disguised as a slot machine. (I know that they are Class 2 or Class 3, just can't remember which is which LOL) After a couple of visits there, it was a never again for me. Strictly donating $$$, no fun at all.
I've done better at tribal casinos than i ever have at state reg. ones. And yeah theres a big difference between the ones i go to, like i always do better at Winstar than at Choctaw Durant. Maybe its just luck of the draw lol. Thanks Marc 😁
Mark, have you ever been to the Chicashaw Gaming Commission? Have you an understanding of their function..i.e., do they check games before they are put on the floor, the coding, RNG certification, etc.?
The lady that hit the $1.2 million? Someone tampered with that machine, and there's before and after photo proof that the "wheel of fortune" was moved. I don't trust the gaming commissions anymore. Someone moved that wheel after the fact, and the NJ Gaming Commission is ignoring it. I'm curious. Is it possible to alter the saved data in a slot machine without detection when a machine goes into 'tilt' mode? I haven't heard much from that case for a while. I haven't been to my casino since that story took a turn in her favor, but she still got sh@t on. I'm suspicious that slot machines are more easily tampered with than I've believed up until this point. There might really be 'a switch in the back'.
How do you know it was tampered with though? That's not what happened. When she got the bonus round, she pressed the spin button and the wheel began to spin (like normal), but it tilted (which means it physically couldn't move to the spot the RNG told it to), but it just happened to stop on the Jackpot wedge when it faulted. After the tilt was cleared (opening the machine, turning attendant key), the game resumed and attempted to move the wheel to the correct spot (again decided by the RNG) and it did, resulting in a $350 win for her, not the jackpot. Even if someone physically opened the machine, removed the wheel assembly and moved the wedge, it would still result in a tilt because the RNG result didn't match the physical result.
I have been to both across the country. Won some and loss some in both. But the way I play, my winnings are about the same in both. But then I dont play back any good line hits and mini jackpots at any casino. Thats the key to sucess at any casino.
Marc, my wife, Shirley & I will see you & Dave at DD on Sat, June 22. Haven't been to Coushatta near Kinder, La, in quite a while but I remember a bank of slots that had a sign with "100% payback" above them. I think they were $1/credit, 3 reel sllots which was too high for me (at the time).
Tribal Casino's can, rare occasion, seize your winnings and you can be arrested for trespassing. It's more of a don't cause a stink, as goes anywhere, otherwise tribal casinos are great! At least here in SoCal. I've had the best runs on BJ in tribal casinos.
Most casinos are not disclosing RTP information because they are not competing on RTP. Tribals can do it. Ho-Chunk in Madison, WI, is a bingo hall and it advertises its class II games as having a 95% floor average. But that is a business decision. The majority of casinos are competing on comps and amenities. They lure in players with offers based on loyalty card status. Not RTP. Though you still occasionally see banks of 97% RTP $0.25, $1, and $5 machines in casinos. Most people do not care. Look at how popular penny games are. The RTP there is nearly always less than 90% including the progressive increment.
Living in Texas...im not sure how many tribal casinos overall we have here..i know of one in S. Texas. and they have a FB page that will show some of the players winining BIG money on them. But i want to know is the machine volatility the same on tribal casinos as it in in state casinos?
very few places will say their payback % in advertisements , but is you look at state reporting records , you can see return to player and make a rough estimate based on the whole property.
Mark, let's suppose RTP on a specific machine is 90%. How much of that 90% does the biggest jackpot/progressive constitute? If it's 30-40% then isn't the effective RTP about 50-60% presuming you won't be the lucky gambler to hit the biggest jackpot/progressive?
What you are describing is actually volatility. Machines with giant jackpots (far away from your bet size) do "reserve" a lot to fund that jackpot. For example, that's why games like 10x pay are so hard to hit because the 10,000 credit top line hit is significant for a 1 credit bet.
I avoid tribal casinos 100%. The operations are so opaque and devoid of transperency. I especially dislike (and distrust) Bingo game based slots. And those slots that ring incessently while counting up winnings...forget it. Sad to say, but I only play State licensed Corporate Casinos.
People that say they got many handpays, I don't believe that for a second... I lived in Reno Nevada for 10 years and I never got one hand pay... I don't always get a big payout but I always leave money ahead... it helps to pay for the gas.
You're doing the right thing - people should stop thinking and working towards hand pays. It's a fools errand in our opinion. Take the win, no matter how small it is.
Handpays are far and few between. I have however; hit 4 handpays @ Harrah's Pompano Beach ⛱️ Fl in the last 6 mo. 1 $2,200, $1,250, $3,500, $4,200 all in high-limits area!
RTP is legislated in most if not all states. People who think that tribal casinos are robbing them should stay out of casinos altogether tbh. I played for 14 hours at Harrah’s Cherokee with $1000. Certainly not something that could be done if they had purposely tight machines. I do think all casinos should have to share RTP though. Just like nutrition labels on food.
How are you able to tell us the average return to player is 90% when earlier in the segment you told us that the Indian casinos don't disclose their numbers so how would you be able to deduce a percentile number that is impossible because you don't know they won't tell you it doesn't make sense to me how you come up with that
90% is the national average, each casino and denomination inside that casino could vary. Even though most tribal casinos don’t disclose this to the public, it’s still available to the industry as an average.
@@GambleSmart ok that's acceptable thanks for getting back to me .I appreciate your numbers and research as I don't believe in the casino industry much as a whole any longer .I like to play but if I'm gonna it is usually only after a complete thorough investation, much like the facts you presented !

very few places will say their payback % in advertisements , but is you look at state reporting records , you can see return to player and make a rough estimate based on the whole property.
Not in Michigan
I ask a worker at one casino does she get a raise every year she said yes. How does they do that plus given money back on their card
Like winstar 🤔
Compare to other casinos
It just takes ur money
They have a reputation
I avoid tribal casinos 100%. The operations are so opaque and devoid of transperency. I especially dislike (and distrust) Bingo game based slots. And those slots that ring incessently while counting up winnings...forget it. Sad to say, but I only play State licensed Corporate Casinos.
I’m sure if you have a problem at running turtles casino red crow will totally have your back…..
No matter what casino you go to, there's always a risk that you could lose. So, just take money that you can play with. No bill money. 🤣🤣
In 2022 I had 25 thousand in hand pays at a tribal casino.
Handpays are far and few between. I have however; hit 4 handpays @ Harrah's Pompano Beach ⛱️ Fl in the last 6 mo. 1 $2,200, $1,250, $3,500, $4,200 all in high-limits area!
I had some excellent luck and horrible luck in both...
My wife won $22,000 on a $7 bet at a tribal casino 🤷
But hard rock casinos Hollywood are tribes ?
Believe me, we totally feel you - The casino industry is purposely shrouded in mystery and it's something we're trying to change. We see no (valid) reason why they can't be more transparent with this stuff.
I will ALWAYS go to Tribal casinos, Native Americans deserve it, State casinos are greedy
Great Marc! thanks.
