  • In this episode of Fixing it Forward I work on the engine in the 2005 Honda Odyssey. I replace the timing belt and water pump, valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, rear catalytic converter, side engine mount, transmission fluid, battery and battery terminals.
I also perform a compression test on the engine as well as talk about the VCM system and how some people like to delete it.
There is still quite a bit of work to do on this Odyssey, but I’ve made a lot of progress bringing it back. I hope you find it entertaining and educational.

I've pretty much watched every video that you have made because Its nice to find someone that you can trust and learn from. I know you will get a heck of a lot of views since the k series scene is pretty big. And it will clear up a lot of problems people are having. Mine was assembled in the uk. And it has a jdm k20a. But I don't know what type of k20a it has. Was told it was a type s by a honda dealer mechanic. You see the potential videos, given that's what I am dealing with. I bought it from a dealer. And two weeks later it won't go over 4krpm. Spending 5k on the car and two weeks later it does that and not knowing what to do pretty much shatters any dreams of pulling away from a Prius lol. If you aren't interested, no hard feelings lol I've spend over 500 dollars on shitty shops looking at it and doing nothing. I'm down right been done wrong from the start I think.

Eric.... What you described as the "EGR" ports in that intake manifold were actually re-purposed in that newer design to be the PCV gas distribution. You can see the passageway coming from the PCV hose on the front valve cover in the bottom left of the intake manifold. Additionally this is the reason for your dirty front valvetrain/head-cover. This redesign of the PCV system now pulls fresh air into the REAR cylinder head (stays clean), and pulls crank case gases from the FRONT cylinder. It's the crank-case gases and lack of fresh air that cause the buildup. On the old pre-2005 design it was the opposite. The rear valve cover had the PCV valve, and the front valvecover got the fresh-air.
The EGR system was also redesigned to distribute directly into each side plenum right after the throttle body via a large T-shaped bolt-on tube. The T-tube can be removed and cleaned now which is nice.

I know that most "mechanics" do not recommend engine flushes, but I did on my daughters 2000 Accord with close 200k on the engine with no issues so far. Hopefully, there will be no issues in the future. You roll the dice with engine flushes because you can damage seals and you can start "loosening a lot of gunk" that can block passages. We purchased the car and I did first flush with oil change and filter. I replaced 20% of the oil (I upped the oil to next higher viscosity too because these "additives" thin the oil) with Marvel Oil and ATF and drove the car 250 miles and did another engine flush with oil change and filter. I used an common flush product and followed the instruction before each oil change and did NOT drive the car with the flush in the engine. I repeated 5 times. After the 3rd time I noticed the engine ran smoother and was more responsive. Each time oil that came out, it looked like it had at least 5k on it even though it was 250 miles. I also cleaned the valve cover and cleaned the top of the head with a toothbrush before doing the flush. This again, is risky......The plan is to move slowly toward normal oil intervals (with no more flushes)......2 -500 mile oil changes, 2 -1000 mile oil changes, then 2 -2000 mile oil changes, then 3000 mile.......Hopefully by doing multiple flushes and changes any large "chunks" have been removed or will stay in place. I don't recommend any one try this and to do it at their own risk. I do believe this best way do "engines flushes" if you are going to do them, to avoid clogged passages.

You're talking about putting non-Honda fluid in a Honda transmission. I've got an interesting one for you!
My partner had a Hyundai i20 which was written off, she liked it so she bought another. It never seemed to have the same pep as the old one though.
I saw that the transmission fluid was a bit dirty so I changed it out, once I got it out I noticed a distinct lack of cat pee smell and whilst dirty it was yellow/brown...
Yeah someone had done a transmission service and replaced the fluid with engine oil... Needless to say after a couple of fluid changes to flush the old stuff out, it ran a lot better!
I found it do weird though; that someone with enough know-how to do a transmission service (the filter/pan gasket had been replaced as well) wouldn't know that it needs special fluid...
Anyway fun little story. Great video, really happy to see FiF continuing!

Excellent series, as a Honda fanBoi I love these J series motors as I have had 4 TLs over the years, currently have an 07 Odyssey with 300k miles, 08 TL-S 6 speed and an 00 AP1 s2k. I bought the odyssey on a whim to replace an old town and country and the Honda has been a charm to own over the past 8 years. I did install a VCM muzzler right after I bought the car and its been working great ever since, no weird vibrations and next to non oil consumption.

Love this series, Eric! I hope you do a lot more of these in the future.
I’ve owned a 2005 Odyssey for 5+ years now, it’s a fantastic van. My wife and I are actually in the market for a second. When we bought it though, it seemed to burn oil and fouled up spark plugs. We were also plagued with misfires. We got the issues to stop after replacing the PCV valve (o-rings were completely pancaked), bought a VCM tuner, and did a valve adjustment. I’m not sure which maintenance item on that list contributed the most, but I will say, after the valve adjustment (at around 140 - 145k miles I think), the oil consumption *seemingly* improved. I don’t keep as close an eye on the oil between changes, and it tends to only consume at most ~1/2 a quart every 3-4K miles. Just FYI for others out there. Oh and the VCM tuner is awesome - really not a fan of the engine lurching when VCM kicks on.
I do wonder if such an issue could’ve contributed to the exhaust issues this van had.

@@ericthecarguy Yeah, I totally understand that. I remember the other cars and how they would keep coming back. I’m having the same issue with getting parts. Thankfully, I wasn’t in dire need for them at the time. Hopefully COVID just becomes a distant memory soon.

19:48 while working at honda, i noticed that the "rear bank spool valve" would leak on that model year(i actually own a 2005 odyssey as well so this is so cool for me) , we ended up using the NAPA gasket kit for those.. or you can get it for $500 from honda since they dont sell the gasket separately, either way if it seems like there is an oil trail and it leads you up there, i had to replace that one on mine and it wasnt too terrible, thanks for the share! looking forward to episode 4

I used the denso plugs in my 99 accord & within 5k miles I started getting misfires.
It ended up having two problems first being a blown head gasket. After all was repaired I put back in the denso plugs & boom the miss moved over to another cylinder. After swapping the plugs front to back the miss moved up front.
I replaced with the ngk plugs & its been beautiful since no miss & everything running new. Comparing the denso & ngk the denso are bout 1 or 2 mm shorter and place the plug closer to the head. The ngk are much closer to the piston itself & give a complete burn.

We had our 2009 Honda Odyssey with the VCM....ours was the Touring model. And at about 78,000 miles the check engine light came on due to the VCM cylinders being oil fouled and causing a misfire. Honda replaced the oil control rings..meaning they had to pull the engine out of the van for the repair...and did it under special program...so no cost to us. We were burning about a quart every 3,000 miles. I read about the VCM muzzler to deactivate the system but not sure if that would cause more problems than it is supposed to fix.
We replaced the 09 with a 2017 Odyssey and so far it doesn't seem to be an oil burner...so hopefully Honda has a permanent fix. Also the 17 gets much better gas mileage...almost 30 mpg on the highway depending on wind conditions etc.

I recently puller the heads off of a 2007 Pilot with 220,000 miles, due to a blown head gasket. The front head was a lot dirtier with sludge than the rear. Also the front valve cover gasket was leaking. I think this was caused by a completely blocked PCV. For some reason, the PCV's tend to get overlooked on these engines. I also dropped the oil pan / pump pickup and the VCM gasket / screen, all were fairly clean.

If an engine isn't running rough or loud, I normally don't bother on the J series. Also, when they get gunked up like the front bank was, adjusting valves is a real PITA. Video linked in the description for J series valve adjustment. Thanks for the comment.

A lot of the studs came out with the fasteners too when I was working on my ‘99 Cutlass so I think I’m gonna reassemble as much as I can on the engine stand to avoid having to deal with the space issues. To be honest here I also broke one, everyone breaks stuff sometimes but I was also a lot less knowledgeable back then. I’ve been into cars since my birthday two years ago when my parents gave me that car and today’s the two years two days after.
We’re supposed to be getting a HF here in the mid-summer so I might just let the project take that long since I don’t have my license yet to drive an hour and 15 minutes to the currently closest one IF they even had a hoist.

Considering the price, and how these vehicles are used, frankly a smart owner should always go to the junkyard whilst the cars are still out, fresh for picking, and get themselves various bits for cloudy days. I've been doing this for some years now, and it has saved my ass a few times. I mean, some 80's parts are just gone, even the aftermarket scene has moved on, and i've noticed the trend where there's fewer aftermarket, more cheap knockoffs and shorter periods of times between purchase and time you're out of luck and into the shit creek.
I'd certainly get valve covers, maybe a gearbox, exhaust stuff if it's in good nick, and certainly aaaall the small trim plastic bits, those go off all the time.

hey Eric i just wanna share with you what i found about that variable cylinder management(VCM) that caused all the mess you got with that engine, in 05-06 old vcm version when engaged the reciprocating effect of the pistons with valves closed causes a vacuum pulling oil past the piston rings and flood the cylinders, when the VCM disengages to clear the oil from the cylinder the engine misfires, and this causes premature parts failure, spark plugs, motor mount due to vibration with eco mode enabled, piston rings, cylinder walls and finally the catalytic converter that's what the bulletin mentioned for those 2005 and 2006 year models, hope this will make sense to what you found in that engine.
