OK, my two cents from a retired contractor. Get the exterior done first and building dried in. Which means doors, windows, paint , clear the brush, demo the old fence, and install a new fence so you can secure the property. All this some when the weather is bad, you can focus on the interior work during the winter months. For the interior, focus on your mechanicals and then the paint and finishes last. Sit down, work up a plan, and then work the plan.
Anyone just showing up at Dereks home is completely unacceptable. They may not have malicious intent but they also lack common sense, manners and proper upbringing. Intent aside, trespassing is trespassing and i wouldn't blame you for prosecution
I never thought about that, I’ve known where several people of “relevance” lived and I wouldn’t dream in a million years of entering their property without permission. But watching TH-camrs actually make videos of having to move several times for that reason totally blew my mind…. It’s really sad that we live in a world where people don’t understand that everyone needs freaking personal space
100% it would be time to get electric fences around the property and camera's Every Where! I hadnt even thought of that as an Issue... (Now I am Concerned) who in their right mind would come without an invitation? except maybe family... Stay Safe! it's not worth the risk.
Hi Derek, I have an idea on your museum Project. instead of a product line, maybe you could start "another brick in the wall" project or a "we the people" wall for example. if any of your subscribers donate money to this project, there name would be written on a brick in the building. it would give folks a chance to see there name if they visited the museum or maybe randomly in future videos. I know myself, i have a VGG gift certificate i would gladly give back for the project. Just food for thought, Keep up the good work Derek, you and your family are doing an awesome job.
Yep, great Idea, a wall inside with subscribers on it for a few bucks a brick - if 400K paid $3 a brick, that would raise $1.2M - should definitely get that museum up and running
Get a stencil cutter and let people buy a brick in the building. $20 gets your name and town and state on a brick. That way fans get to be a permanent part of VGG.
This is a good idea. But do it as a tiered system. $20 or $50 for a brick, $100 or $200 for a 1ft X 1ft section of wall or something similar, $500+ for a larger section. That way there's something for all budgets to help and be a part of the venture.
@nobodyspecial6981 I agree with this system... just think 20 bucks is awefully cheap for real estate... maybe make a "memorial area" out back for lower priced options with trinkets or other options...
Facts! Why would anyone think it’s ok to show up at a stranger’s house uninvited? We may FEEL like we know Derek and his family, but we don’t. It’s incredibly presumptuous of anyone to think that he or his family want strangers showing up at their home.
Yeah Ive heard of more than one youtubin' guy have problems with people showing up to their work or homes. It's one thing if you bump into someone out in the wild and say hey. But inserting yourself into their private lives is shockingly disrespectful.
We are still here, saving every obd 1 and obd 2 ,replenishing them mechanically and driving them to and from work everyday,I dont have the set up he does but all my boys drive towncars and just keeping them going and updated is my favorite thing to do,right around KC is a million of us.
Agree Derek, you and your family don't need any of us showing up at your house or rusty acres, etc., unless you personally invite us. You and your family's safety and peace of mind need to be the number one priority. Best wishes and God's blessings to you and your family. 😊
Yeah it's common sense for most of us that you just don't show up to people's homes unannounced or not being invited. It's unbelievable how some people think they are entitled to just impose on someone's family without being invited
Irritated knowing folks showed up and started pulling souvenirs off cars in the treeline. However the biz name does show up on mapping apps. Its unfortunate. But real fans know it isnt anything until Derek and Jessica says it is. Ill wait until there is a reason to go and a welcome matt thrown out.
I think we should all chip in and make it a place where we can hang out. Lol of course not all 2 million of us at the same time, but if we all chip in five or 10 or $20. It would be a really nice place to stop into. Don't you think?
Let’s all band together and give back to Derek and his family for all the years he has given us. I know the VGG community is vast. Is there any local people around Derek that are construction workers, painters, drywallers, electricians, plumbers, etc that would be willing to donate their time and help Derek get this thing up and running a lot more quickly than him and his brother doing it themselves. Come on brothers and sisters let’s let Derek know we got his back. Disclaimer: I’am not in any of those fields and I’am also on the west coast so I wouldn’t be able to help, but I know there has to be some good fellers out there close to him!
Why? He had money. Why should a rich youtuber get stuff for free? Ever see him do any charity work? Donate? No. Stop putting people up on a pedestal that have money. He gets junk cars and makes them a little less junky. Not like he has ever done a real build. Come on.
They are going to need it! did you notice guy measuring at 8:40. Installed that piece at 29:40. Edit: If this is some guy helping out, NO PROBLEM! If this guy is getting paid...... ooof!
@@666kty3 you could easily keep your mouth shut and not visit this page too. He has given things away, done charity, and many other things. My guess is that you want what he has and can't do it. So how about you keep your BS to yourself and move along. I'm willing to bet you are an absolute buzzkill at parties
The Independence Chevelle HAS to be by the front window of the museum. Other cars should rotate in and out to keep the museum fresh. How about the Vice Grip Cafe? it would add some complexity to the project, but give the place a homey vibe and attract a larger crowd of people on a daily basis. Could just be coffee and milkshakes. If you take a page from Cleetus' playbook when he first purchased the Freedom Factory and use special merchandise to raise some funds for the project, you could be pleasantly surprised at the response from your community.
I think the cafe should be a local outside company with a truck. That way he won't have to fight the city with licensing because it sounds like they already are sticklers. This way less to ask, easier to get things he want's. Plus you probably don't want coffee near the cars and shop. But I agree, Indy needs her own spot there front and center. She was a huge part of the channel until she had to go away because her time and body had gave up the ghost
If a feller wants or needs any kind of fire protection system, sprinklers or whatever, give this feller a shout. I’ve got your design to ready for fab/install handled. It would be an honor to help out a guy who’s taught me a ton and motivated me to work on stuff instead of look at it and think about it. Can’t wait to visit VGG museum.
A generous offer indeed. The importance of fire protection and suppression can't be overstated. The building is going to have rare cars in it and a workshop with flammables etc. It would be devastating to see all the hard work and history destroyed by fire. I really hope Derek takes you up on this. Either that or just go there and say you're not leaving until it's done!
Derek, you're a man with an amount of drive I cannot begin to comprehend. What a great vision you have. Between you, Jessica and Crang, I don't see anything stopping you. Absolute respect to you all.
I love the idea !! People don't go to Derek's house. He is a real person with a family that he deserves the ability to spend time with without random people showing up. He spends a ridiculous amount of time creating content to entertain us. He does public events where you can meet him. Let him have some time for his family.
Most people are to stupid. They think cuz people post online then they have every right to be in every aspect of their lives. Just shows most people we're raised like heathens which boils down to terrible parenting which is a HUGE problem in America.
And if he is smart like me has a firearm and will not hesitate to protect his family from people who are showing up and intruding on his home without any invitation wha about that nutcase in the bunch that is unhinged because they don’t like him overheating the McLaren ( don’t know if I spelled that right I can’t see what im writing) but yeah a guy can’t be too careful when he’s in the public eye he needs to put the safety and privacy of his family first I don’t even show up at my family’s home without calling ahead so they can hide the evidence or rent new furniture so they can pretend they are better than me I don’t hide anything I am just me and if they don’t want to move the dirty dishes and laundry off the couch they can sleep on the floor or a motel lol that’s how I keep visitors to a minimum
Go for it Derick .I used to be a milkman working with my father in Ireland many moons ago you are Wright having a place to give back to the town good idea 💡 God bless Alexander in France 🤞
I agree, why in the world would you go to his house, that is f-ing weird? Think about sitting around your own house and suddenly there's some random wandering around your yard and property? I'd think you'd likey NOT take to kindly to it, and more so if you had children.
Definitely need a Milk Barn shirt - with funding going to this project. As a local old guy, not sure if its your vision to have a volunteer day to come out and help with some demo/clean up work, but TN is the Volunteer state after all.
I agree, also maybe do a gofund me or sweepstakes to raise funds for those that want to give. I think you will find lots of us willing to pitch in where we can.
Derek, 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 I was a county building inspector for our rural farm community in Indiana. We loved when people bought old buildings in town and remodeled them. I always worked with the owners to help the building meet today’s codes. We wanted our town to look nice and for a new business to help bring people to our area. Nashville is a tourist attraction now. I heard you mention you live in southern TN. That can’t be but a hour +or- from Nashville. I don’t think you understand how many people will visit that store. You have to be close to interstate 65. Millions of People from up north use 65 to go on vacation to the Gulf Beaches yearly. I believe you will be more busy than you think. Especially if they may get a chance to meet you in person. Just look at the lines you draw at events to sign stuff. I agree you should keep business and home life separate. You are not just a TH-cam creator, you are a TV star now with his own show. Build it and they will come. 🇺🇸🦅🏁🔧
I love right down the road in Minor Hill. I'm a carpenter. I'd be happy to donate on Saturday a month free of charge to help y'all get it done. Let me know if you want the help.
Derek, I think you're underestimating your Subscribers/viewers. I think when ya get all your approvals in place, say the word, and people will come from near and far to help you rebuild this place. Kind of like an old-fashioned barn raising type thing. Also, im sure that there are a lot of places that would donate materials like windows, doors, plumbing, electrical etc. for some exposure or install collaboration in a video. Also, that front overhang is definitely needing some neon strips and VGG neon letters on top of it. 🇨🇦
I was going to say the same thing. Doug from SV Seeker built an entire 80 foot steel Chinese Junk style sailboat in his front yard in Oklahoma with Viewers Help starting with practically no audience. You should be able to get your place done in a blink of an eye if you put out the word
I would love to come out and work on something like that! Heck if every subscriber put in an hour of work you could probably put a highrise on that spot!
Engineer/house flipper/landlord/airbnb host/huge fan here weighing in... I understand the allure of doing things on the cheap, as well as bringing back a building from the edge of life. Don't do it. You will pour so much money into that place and the end result will be cool and quirky, but ultimately the geometry is so confining that it will severely restrict potential and flexibility. Hard to tell from the video what the lot capacity could be for events but it looks super tight and right on a busy road. I'd discuss with a local realtor what your options might be in terms of at least getting the building more saleable for another feller's vision. If that doesnt make sense, just pass it along as is and find a better candidate for your vision. Always happy to swap real estate war stories!
I wouldn't put a dime into that building. It may be good for storage, but that's about it. I would buy an old gas station or car dealership that actually has service bays wher real work can get done. That would also lend itself to having car shows, swap meets, etc. IMHO
As a retired Canadian Veteran, I quite may have an hour or 30 of them…I don’t know, maybe more? To spare a guy if ever he was looking for some work parties…many hands make light work. You are doing this as a thank you to the viewers. Well as a viewer for many years I would do something like this to say “Thank you, Derek” for all the pleasure you have given us. I even caught my wife talking to someone about Derek, our buddy……..I said “You have never even met the guy” to which she replied “She has watched enough to feel like she has”….anyway. If ever you need a hand I am sure there are many out there.
I was thinking the same thing. This could be a way to get the community involved in a hands on way. Set up dates, have materials and a plan ready, and use the hands that show up.
Hey Derek! Long time listener, first time caller here. Right of the hop I just wanna say Thank you for everything you and your Family do. You not only bring wonderful content and inspiration to us all, but you also show a compassion, wisdom, and integrity that we all can certainly try and follow. I've been here since the beginning, and it may not mean much coming from someone you've never met, but I'm very proud of how far you've come and the Father you are to those Boys. I hope to one day visit your new place shake your hand Sir. As far as which vehicles to have on display, that's a tough one. You've done some great ones that's for sure. To throw my hat in the ring, I'd say probably Independence, Longmire, Vanishing Paint, and the one that started to whole thing, the Blue 69' Camaro. Maybe with a broken cell phone duct taped to the windshield. Just my twelve cents. Cheers to you and yours!
As a building professional the one advice I can give you is this. The building department loves big words, specific words and it's our job as builders to avoid telling them those words. Rather than museum it'll be a retail display. Rather than an autoshop it's a storage and maintenance facility for the retail space. The plumbing and washrooms are going to be 'remodeled' to the existing instead of rebuilt. A lot of headaches can be avoided by reducing the amount of information and elaboration provided to the building department. This may not sound like the right thing to do, but you'd be surprised how common it is as a strategy to keep a project out of the red tape weeds. But hindsight being 20-20 you can't unsay what's already happened. But for future inquiries it's good to keep that in mind when it comes to describing plans.
That is such great advice - anything that prevents these ghouls from glomming more cash from a taxpayer with good intentions is awesome, especially if their own tactics are cleverly used against them!
Or live in a small town that doesn't overregulate! I just tore off a roof on an addition (actually two additions) on the back of a house. Took out a window and raised the header 3 feet to get more pitch and rebuilt the roof. Took the plans to get a permit and was told I didn't need one! Only need one if I am changing the "footprint". The larger towns I have property in would all require a permit. Built a 3 car garage on the back of my commercial building where I live. Got the permit, built the garage, and have never seen anybody come around to inspect it! Like you said about intent, it was for parking cars and not any commercial use so I didn't need a state permit.
Also being in construction 40+, I agree to a point... that's all good advice if you haven't had any city or county personnel on site yet... but I think, that cats outta the bag! When its a commercial space with John Q. Public involved, you can't sidestep that ADA cra...stuff. Can't un-ring that bell! If you do a fair amt of the exterior stuff, maybe you can walk-back certain parts of it... Have a new mtg... we've re-thought thru some of this and decided blah, blah, yada... Also, I would start getting bids for your mechanical stuff sooner than later, so u have a ball park idea... (plumbing, elect, etc). Try to get ur bids off season... prices are generally better, (as they may need the work!) Godspeed young man!! CHEERS!!
Thanks for taking us through your new rehab! Makes sense that you'd want to restore/rebuild/reuse and old building. It's just a stationary car! Yes, you're crazy. I love the idea and look forward to visiting when you are open for business!
A special merch line with proceeds going to the building is a great idea, bet it would do well. Love the merch store/museum idea for sure, perhaps a feller could rotate the vehicles out every so often, keep things fresh.
Derek keep up the great work, these old buildings are the backbone of small towns across America and need to be restored. If you are in need of plumbing and heating supplies Ferguson Enterprises can help let me know and would be glad to assist.
Long time business owner here. If I was face to face with a feller I’d advise you to get people to take care of this for you and get it done. You’re going to sell way more than a shirt a week on retail side. Take a look at what Maine Cabin Masfers has done with their show on Magnolia. Shop, restaurant, bar and events. It’s an entirely new, large business. When you are open you will change the fortunes of surrounding businesses - esp restaurants. I feel like you’re underestimating the passion of over 2m subs plus all the ones who don’t hit the sub button. Just my two cents. I’m not the one signing on the dotted line for a loan but think big Derek. You are a monster brand to car people. Saw a VGG sticker on a car on the highway today here in Charlotte.
I agree with that right there. It’s a great idea. But it being a DIY project, with the scope you’re talking about, you need a hood contractor to get it moving and finished.
HECK I am in New York State living between Ithaca NY and Binghamton New York, and I LOST my Vice Grip Garage Independence Chevelle hoodie, that I had gotten as a Christmas gift and replaced it with a brand new one (Thank GOD I was able to get it before they sold out)!! So I KNOW there are TWO of those same hoodies around my area now!! LOL!! I plan on buying more merch here soon too!! Even though I am disabled, can't really travel and I can always use the internet!! BUT either way, I'd love to help out however I can!!!!
I can feel the nervous excitement and anxiety in your voice. Good Luck Derek. Lots of work but we all know you're not afraid of that. Will continue to support you and your great channel.
Yeah I was thinking along the same lines as this myself. Maybe a fellow could set up a website where people to sign up for a certain weekend and have a place for them to list their skill set. I'd say probably twenty twenty five guys per weekend. If a fella had a few roll off boxes one site clean up of loose debris and rough landscaping could be done in a weekend with a crew that size. I think a fella could maybe provide a custom "crew" tshirt for those that help and maybe have a good feed with some cold snacks on Saturday evening as a thank you. I know a lot of guys would say it's not needed but, according to the customs of Southern hospitality....yeah...lol.
I assume it's not really a liability issue with insured professionals and a contract. Good idea and I bet there'd be a good few people who could and would show up.
My young lad watched you the entire time he was in the hospital and when he got out he hit the ground running to the shop thanks for being a inspiration to the younger generation
We bought our first commercial property in 2007. A dilapidated urban building that started life as a raincoat factory in 1953. We saw it had good bones and rehabbed it and moved our business in. It was 10,000 sq ft, which seemed vast, but that space gets eaten up quickly with equipment, tooling, furniture, office space and cars parked inside. My take-away from that is never underestimate the square-footage you need. Better to have the space and not need it vs. always wish you had more room. 15 years later we sold the place for more than 3x what we paid for it, so I firmly believe in the investment quality of real estate. Just don't go "OCC" on it and wind up with a palace nobody can afford and winds up a mini-storage. Moderation is what I'm saying.
Derrick, my buddy and I used to do mitigation work (fires, flooding, etc.) and would happily come help you clean that building free of charge. Just get a dumpster and we could be there.
What Bassist said.... I'd be willing to volunteer for free too. I live in East Tennessee about 3 1/2 hours away. But I hope Bassist wears more than a bathrobe doing demo work. I have gloves, safety glasses and a 3 lb Milwaukee sledge... Let's do this!
I’d wear just my underwear if it gets the views, I heard butts in the internet gets views. I’m just willing to offer services for a guy in need. Pay it forward, I help him and he may help someone else.
Pick a demo, and hang, windows and door weekend. Bring a plumber and electrician friend. We can park IN THE ALLY!😊 What size window and doors? Bring oil. We will see which type CONDITIONS the wood the best. ALL A GUY HAS TO DO is give fellers and felleretts a date to cough cough call in sick to work.
Hello Derek, The small doors in the old milk plant were for unloading the milk cans (80 pounds). The cans moved on a series of roller decks to where the milk was dumped into a receiving tank. The millk cans were then rinsed and returned through the other door to be loaded on the milk truck to be loaded and returned to the farm. Ed - farmed for 60 years. Wish you and the family well.
Im a retired electrical contractor (and a 100% disabled vet). As a contractor I'd say DO NOT tear down the pole barn section unless the city forces you to. You will not be able to replace it with a pole barn. At best you'll be able to replace it with something that looks like a pole barn but it's going to have to have all of the requirements for a commercial building, so if you're going to avoid tearing the existing structure down even if you rip off all of the sheathing and everything else and just replace the structure piece by piece, you're better off doing that. As long as they'll allow you to do it, I would highly recommend that. Otherwise you'll never get that part back without spending all the money needed to build a commercial structure and at the cost of that per square foot it's going to take you a very long time to get that space back.
I was checking out that part of the building. The roof will need redone and supported by the back wall of the original building, but the rest of that structure should be very salvageable.
I'd like to see Vanishing Paint, the drag truck, Betty White(if you still have it), & maybe the black Chevy Belair in the museum. I'd buy merchandise to help support the remodel & whatnots. I want to come to Tennessee to check out the museum in the future. Your channels are my favorite channels to watch & I never miss your videos on a weekly basis.
Oh Derek! I so get the challenge! We bought an abandoned steam laundry in Virginia 4500 sq ft of revovation nightmare! The commenter who suggested getting it dry and secure first was right. Take it in steps and it'll work out! Definitely Milk Barn merch!
I bought a 4300 sq ft commercial building 21 years ago and have been living in it ever since. Right in the middle of my small town. Built a 3 car garage on the back of it to add to the two I already have. Had a 2,000 sq ft pole barn built behind it where there was previously a building that burnt down. I have about 100k in the whole thing!
@@Jimsalos just dusted off the old atlas... my lanta weve got a trek and a half to Tennesee. Me a little more than you but still, it aint no weekend trip thats for sure.
Derek you have a very strong VGG community and I am sure you would have plenty of volunteers to help you with this project. You have given so much to the VGG fans and I am sure they would love to help you by lending a hand with whatever skill sets they have to bring the building to a future VGG building All you have to do is give the word and you wont believe the people that would come to help you out , plus the donation of materials needed for this project. Make it the VGG fans community building and call it the VGG Milk Shop Museum It would be a great place to hang out for events, sit downs and have some cold snacks. Heck maybe a BBQ event to give back to the community along with some car shows. I think this will be a good solid winner if you let the fans give back to you and your family.
Derek, I think rather than using the existing framework to dictate their utility, run with your dreams and imagination. As a chiropractor, I owned, ran, and told the owner what I wanted the place to look like. I certainly couldn't do all that I wanted to, however, my touch, my comfort level and pride made my patients and my family felt like our extended and cherished family. Do be too stubborn, but don't, as you just said, "it just took the wind out of my sails". You've got the backbone and soul of a warrior. USE IT. Your customers and admirers will be glad you did. Good Luck Too bad you moved, my office was in MN. Lol
My daughters love watching “My buddy Derek” fixing old cars. We watch at bedtime for a little while several times a week. They love the humor, sarcasm and also learn a little something. You are one of a kind man. Keep up the good work
I have wondered how much of VGG's success has caught you a little off-guard, and I mean that because you're pretty much a down-to-earth humble guy. It just wasn't that long ago that you were making that first video and it's grown so fast. This streetfront presence is really a good idea. Gives you some controlled visibility while letting your family have their privacy, safety, and your kids get to be kids without looky-loos intruding, even in a well-meaning way. I'm truly happy for all of your success, you earn it daily, and it brings another set of challenges. I know this is going to fly high for you, Derek and Jessica.
I will 100% purchase a shirt or any other merch to help make this project happen! Please continue to make videos on this project as well, the VGG community would love to see the restoration of this old building.
I love your vision Derek! I can see this being an absolute success! Your community will definately appreciate it and offer help. It will take time but definitely a great idea.
It takes a really good person/ family to have the kind of attitude Derek and his family to not be mad or upset when people show up at his personal/ private property. Derek and family you guys are truly awesome.
He is being patient when talking about the situation with the channel - I wouldn't expect the same attitude if I was the one showing up on his property!
I love that glass brick around the front door. Looks kinda like a 50's radio station. People showing up at your house is just not acceptable. I remember when you and I were filming in Detroit, someone showed up at my house and my wife was home alone. She didn't feel safe. You helped me talk her down. Maybe having this HQ is the way to help solve that? Maybe it might be worse? Either way, cool old building, and kudos for the vision!! I'll show up if you have an open house (and I'm invited).
Love your idea and the building was rebuilding it my mine as walked us fellers around it. Could a cool place to go and see . To all fellers and fellets please let Derek and family home alone he doesn't have that much time at home working for his family's future so let help him to keep his privacy. And let's get the the museum rolling Derek say the word even you have to get the folks to sign a waver that there responsible for own self's while helping to this or put under a 501c non profit
Mr. Derek, you say things like we the fans deserve this. but truth be told YOU deserve this. I can't tell you enough how good of people you and Jess are. You do so much for everyone else and we love you guys. This is a REAL good idea. You are making great stories and adding to the history of the building and the neighborhood. It will be awesome to take a road trip to visit the ViseGrip headquarters/store and possibly meet you. You like to work hard and I think you can make it happen. Thank you Derek and Jessica. 😊
Independence absolutely perfect opportunity for everyone to see her. Rotate some others but Independence should be a main stay. Some of the rarer ones and some "long term projects", I'm on the other side of the pond 🇮🇪 but when this happens it's absolutely on my list of things to go to and see
Special merchandise to support the rescue of the building is a great idea. Old gear heads are also interested in old buildings. Making them safe and up to code would be great content. Put a grass covered patio in the alley, tables, and chairs. For the milk bar. Cars? Studibaker for sure, Independence or Liberty for another and maybe the Landspeed car or a modle A. You have no true idea of the impact you make until you're 400 or 500 steps down the road. If there are tradeschools in the area, you might consider contacting some of them to help with part of the labor. I will keep you in my prayers.
I always liked the idea of selling bricks that we as fans can have our names engraved in that can be put on the property somewhere like a sidewalk or a retaining wall. As supporters we can purchase the bricks for a set amount and have our names be a part of the VGG world headquarters forever!
Hi Derek! I hail from Scarborough, Canada where you recently acquired the Pantera. Your idea for this place is fantastic. Just wanted to bleep bloop about the front door overhang. I am extremely pleased that you plan on keeping it. Overhangs of that nature were common with buildings from that time period. Bringing the building back to life instead of just leveling it and starting over will keep the history of the building alive while creating a new chapter. As far as the overhang goes, do it up like the 50's. Lots of small light bulbs on the underneath and what else but a neon Vice Grip Garage sign across the front of it and neon tubing in the channels. Kind of like the way the old roadside diners used to do it. Good luck and godspeed with the project. Looking forward to future episodes and updates.
Derek, Great video! Exciting things happening for sure! I know you said to bleep-bloop our ideas..so here goes! I looked at the building on a common mapping program and love the style of the old place. It really has potential! Front the front view-remove the front "walk-in" door and put a single ADA compliant glass/Lexan door and try to reuse those glass "cubes on one side of it to fill the space out and let natural light inside. It gives it a great 1950's look and still meets ADA. I agree wholeheartedly about keeping the cover/porch roof over that front door and have some ideas for that in a minute as well! The big green door thing to the left: take it completely out and replace with a big roll up door similar to the old-school garage/gas station doors from the 1950's that were wood framed with the windows in them. Again-it lets light in and if you have the area behind it as your museum or a finished car/truck behind it-well, it would look awesome from the street and maybe attract attention as a classic auto shop from the 1950's or 60's. Possibly build another rounded hood or stoop over that door to imitate the one over the walk in door. Outline the front roofline and over the doors with a neon strip lighting. Think something like from the animated movie "Cars" buildings in Radiator Springs. I think it could look sweet and add to the way you want it to look with your roadworthy restorations. - Tom
Given the age of the building and the glass blocks - I have one word for you ....NEON! Maybe build on the 50's-70s theme of the building and your cars?
Hey Derek, if you ever want or need help, I'm down. I know you dont need a bunch just dropping in, but I've got a strong back and a will to work. Will work for free just to say we did it! Your a stand up guy and having folks wander onto the homestead is a big No-No, viewer or not. I'll keep you and the family in my prayers!
I worked in historical brick restoration for 18 years and ran a restoration on an old ice and milk house here locally. That brick is an excellent structure and will save you a lot of money as long as it's fairly stable. I've done all kinds of engineered and non -engineered repairs on 100 year old buildings to get the problems fixed for situations like yours. Don't let the city get you down and get creative. I sure wish I lived closer and I'd be over there donating my time for the love of the channel and history of the building. In our neck of the woods there are a lot of historic grants for restorations which in a lot of cases just help keep up the property values and make life livable instead of old abandoned buildings everywhere. I feel much like you do for cars about old buildings (and old cars) I can't wait for the time I get to visit. With a good roof and sturdy soil a 2x4 in the right place can keep something standing safely for more than a lifetime. I've seen some crazy stuff that stood the rest of time.
This could be an amazing location for the channels to call home and a wonderful legacy. Your vision for it is very considerate and thorough. Much love and blessings to all ❤ Stay safe and be kind 🙏
I wish I lived closer to offer free labor and help with the red tape/re-zoning BS. You hit on a very valid point about getting to know the neighbors regarding the re-zoning process. Talk with them and let them get to know you and your plan - getting them on your side for city council meetings is key. Best of luck and can’t wait to see the progress! Prayers for you and your family!
Great idea! Protect the family is priority. A destination is needed, the city should be behind you, the local dinners should be behind you, the local gas stations/convenient stores should be behind you. You have the best plan figured out.
Derek, first off I apologize for the people coming into your private space. You’re a great man with an amazing family, I can understand why everyone would want to spend time with you. Thank you for the most graceful understanding explanation of people coming into your family space over ever heard. It’s unfortunate that folks who love and adore you don’t hold that same respect for your “fame” and family as most. Thank you again for sharing life and your talents and dreams and family with us. God Bless
Once things are approved and ready put out a vidio every Thursday morning of the progress so we can all follow along. I’ll bet this would greatly increase views and subscribers which ultimately increases income. Make sure you reign. The project into a year or so. Much longer we all might get bored. Id buy a milk barn t shirt. I do envision a big vice grip garage sign but think I love the milk barn name better. Thanks for sharing.
Vice grip alley shirts? Put em on pre order, and that would get the a budget started, and it would also be a good way to gauge interest in the project... (You already know a bunch of fellers, and fellets are fired up!)
Wow I really don't understand some people. Not sure why they feel you owe them more. You are one of the busiest people I know, I would want any moment of quiet family time I could get. Sorry you have to provide more....
Derek, love what you’re doing. I know this comment might not be welcome on this page or even by you but most of the City codes and requirements are for good reason and will help you have a safe, functional building once it’s done. You should put out a call for design professionals (architects and engineers) who could help you navigate the city permitting processes. I’d be happy to help guide you through the rezoning process you mentioned. From what you said you wanted to do with the building and property and the looks of the neighborhood, the City should be thrilled to have you and what you’re looking to bring to the community.
We all appreciate you and your family Derek! Thanks for all you do. I left Minnesota about the same time you moved down. I ended up in Arkansas. Because of you, I am always scanning abandoned rigs as I drive around. One day I will find a project to dive into. You are my go to youtube channel! Thanks again
Super cool idea! But it's too bad people just show up at your home, that's not respectful. We would love to see Independence there someday! Other ideas would be 777, the Studebaker fire truck... Good luck with all the work. Until we can visit we will enjoy watching you work on it!
"Lease and maybe eventually buy". I gotta say that was extremely refreshing to hear. Not very many Parents know how to raise their children properly nowadays, you got it together!
Derek, you should keep the building 50’s deco style! Also on another note, I’m a Pipefitter from Minnesota and could help you out with your HVAC in the building when you need it, Let me know!
I was hoping to see a comment like this, THANK YOU!!! Man if I was 20 years younger I'd be down there helping him ASAP. Its such a great idea hopefully more fans will step up and help to.
Sounds like a great idea. If your budget allows you should think about hiring a coordinator since you're so busy. If this town is big enough you may have a local chamber of commerce, a small business assistance office or a tourism office that could have great resources for you.
Derek, we like it, we like it a LOT! A store, an automotive and related antiques museum and a workshop where people would be able to get a glimpse of some project cars and a guy wrenching, cutting, grinding, fabricating, upgrading, restoring, swapping on 'em would really be great! And maybe enough space out back and on that alley side to have a small car show or fundraiser event, whatever, would be awesome too! Like in the 'Field of Dreams' movie..."If you build it they will come." ; )
I feel this is exactly what you need , A gift shop would be a nice touch . Less is more, is the way to go Derek. Your vision / idea will come together. As things come together you can start a cars n coffee on the weekends maybe have a few meet n greets with other TH-camrs , podcasts . The possibilities are endless. I wish you all the BEST!! . Cheers 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Derek, I can tell you from personal experience that you need a specific plan. That means drawings and what type of material to be used that fits your budget. Plan a minimum of 20% over budget and get a project manager. Someone that can be there everyday to keep everything moving, that way all contractors are held accountable. Then You need to do what you do ( Vise Grip Garage) stuff and don’t micro manage. You need to keep your sanity! If there are things that you want to do on the remodel than you must work it into the schedule and relayed to your project manager. Hopefully you have someone you trust to take on the challenge! This WILL be less expensive in the long run. Good Luck.
Before I read any comments I knew that people would be offering to donate materials or their expertise to this project--and sure enough, the comments are full of those type of offers. If you fine a way to make this a community project and harness the HP of your extended 'team' then you could knock this out pretty quickly and cheaply, I would think.
Hey Derek, Tave from Australia here. Just wanna say I love this channel and your attitude toward work, family and life. I hope the pleasure of thousands isn't spoilt by a few. All the best to you and yours. ❤✌🏼
You should call Dennis Anderson. He has done something almost exactly like this. One of the nicest guys ever if you don't know him. Same guy on TV and off. Your kind of guy 100%
@@maggs131 Yes. Coinjock NC. Diggers Dungeon. Merch store, open shop where they work on the monster trucks, Diggers Diner and a petting zoo and all kinds of stuff. He just does it for his fans.
Whichever route you go for the construction itself, a thing to consider would be adding a small coffee shop or something like it next to your museum / vehicle displays as a place for people to linger. They are going to linger anyway, because they have hopes of meeting you or your family and you don’t want them lingering too long in a retail shop. Since you’re going for a mixed use permit, now might be the time to consider it even if you don’t do anything with it until phase 2 or 3. One of a kind merchandise is a neat idea, or you could add “found this in Tennessee” to the sleeves of your existing apparel lines. Also consider carrying the clear coat and other products you frequently use on restorations there. Appreciate you and the heart you bring to your work and interactions with your viewers. Praying good success for the things you are doing and protection for your family until this is complete.
Great idea giving fans a chance to visit your shop. Buy some souvenirs and just get to see you. The people that can't afford to travel long distance. Love your videos. Love your show vice grip Derek, you're doing a fine job. Keep up the good work
I've built a few businesses over the years now, and I've found that it's FAR cheaper to build from the dirt up, than to fix up an old building. So, if you're not really attached to that location, I'd sell it and find a piece of dirt to build yourself a huge pole barn from scratch, you'd have her done in a year and it would be so much easier, and more importantly exactly what you want and cheaper. Just a guy who's been there's opinion, either way I support you, and will buy some merch to help a feller along.
I love (the idea of) old buildings and can get lost in the romance, but now that I'm 2/3 of the way through this life, and from my own decades of dredging old places, I understand the hard cold wisdom of this comment. It's not as dreamy, but it's reality. And on the functionality side, a VGG Headquarters without a parking lot in the front for "continuous fan car show" seems like an opportunity missed. Any chance there is an old diner across the road from a town square or a park somewhere nearby? Or maybe a suitable place for lease where you can test drive the entire concept for a few years? (I feel like an entire Tractor Supply is actually the scale and format to consider) It may turn out to be so successful that it will pay for financing a brand new build. Derek talked about his kids owning this long term as an investment to lease out, which is a great general concept, but at the same time, this building not being economically productive lead to its court-ordered sale to begin with. Is there are a compelling market demand for this kind of space, in this location, with these neighboring parcels and roads, even once it is fixed? I know I'm being a bummer, but the main thing about real estate is that it exists in a single specific context.
I agree with this. He's all about nostalgia but in the long run what's going to cost less so he can put back more. The city is giving him a hell of a time, so a new pole barn is definitely up to his speeds. Plus you don't need the ghosts of that place of 70 years past bothering him as he works. You already see things working late in the shop if you know what I mean.
Yeah I agree with this. The building does not seem special besides its age. Sure there is some history but its not ground breaking; its ugly, and I don't really see any redeeming qualities worth the investment. But its your dream and its totally doable!
Getting building permits for a new building is more of a hassle than getting one for an existing building. A lot of people think that it costs less to build “new” when in reality it’s cheaper to “fix” one up!
Random fans showing up at your house is the worst... I can appreciate their viewership without wanting them in my yard. If you want Yellow Jacket and Hornet nest security systems around your property like I do at mine, I know a guy lol. Interesting concept with the museum idea.
When a man loves his fans so much that he finds a way for them to come and hang out with him, that is a real man. What a great gift you are giving to us.
Derek definitely appreciates his fans but I gotta say he seemed a little stressed out in this video. Almost seems as if he was forced into this decision to try to keep people away from his house. I would imagine he had higher hopes for this same idea but people just can’t leave the man’s home and family alone.
Definitely a shirt and a buy a brick plan! You have a fantastic channel, an adorable family and an amazing idea! This community will always support you! Thank you for all that you do.
I think continuing to call it "The Milk Barn" would be cool. All your fans would know that's where you might see Derek wrenching, snag some merch and have a VGG Coffee or cold snack.
Derek, you are a freaking inspiration to a feller that has no clue what he's doing most of the time. You are amazing, you never stop giving back to the community that supports you. Next time you head to SE Michigan, the wobble pops are on me. Current situation; I Need to dive into my '99 Tahoe....you know...brakes...you know...I know you do....still...not even sure what is wrong...they worked great one day, and the next? NOPE...I have no clue where to even look, but you know...a feller is going to dive in anyway. Would never have done that before finding your channel.
He owns multiple busineses not including VGG add Volunteer muffler. He is a multi multi millionare. Dont get it confused. Hes a rich man. Who acts poor. He also wont read or even care to read 99% of the comments. Its all for views and money.
@@oghaz3y7 Well, first, you're wrong, and 2nd, I don't care that if he is or isn't a millionaire. He gives back way more than others. Other creators that are doing WAY better than Derek haven't done ANYTHING compared to Derek. One brags that he bought $500K worth of cars, but "he is just a regular guy", after going on $100K vacations. No, Derek is very humble. Don't like him? Leave the channel, I'm sure Derek wouldn't care.
A couple of clues to help you out. You live in SE Michigan, the Tahoe is a '99, ya got rust issues due to where you live and likely the lines are rotted out. I'd check that first and foremost and you'll know if they are rotted out. I'd also check the frame while at it. If native to the rust belt, the frame may not be in the best of shape as it is. That is first, then if the lines look good, check your master cylinder to be certain that's good, or at worst, the brake booster is shot, but do check the lines and go from there.
@WreckDiver99 exactly!! He's a blue collar kinda guy that is doing what he loves to do and takes us along on the journey. He brings back memories of working on old cars when I was a kid.
For the love of god Derek, put laminated glass in for the exterior windows! It holds up better in storms and helps deter break ins. When someone tries to break the glass, it holds together like a windshield. Burglars cut themselves up good trying to get through it. The alleyway would make a great meet and greet/ outdoor eating area for small events.
Hey, Feller! Just take your time and I'm sure everything will come into place as it can! I'd love to meet you in person, and hopefully, I will when you all get this place up and running! I apologize for people interrupting your home space and shop! You were gracious in the way you described people just showing up at your home! People should understand that is your safe haven for you and your family unit, and not disrespect that!! Be well and be safe!! I'm looking forward to progress videos on this project!!
Alleyway would make a cool beer garden/chill and eat ice cream spot. Mount and awning to the building so you don’t have to actually put posts in the ground… clean it up, pea gravel and pavers, patio sets… perfect.
I'm a Surveyor, for my dayjob, and I went to Tech for AutoTech. It's a big ordeal taking on the Planning Commission and Public Works to renovate a building like that. I've seen literally thousands go through it and helped many people from survey to city. Site plans, surveys, corrections, etc etc, but, you are a great person for doing this for your viewers friends and family. I probably would have just put up a high voltage fence and booby traps, LOL, thanks Derek for being such a loving, kind and giving feller to all and I will be praying for you and your family and your continued success. I appreciate you.
I love the idea of having a vgg museum and place to come and see Derek and family, as well as some of the channel cars, especially Liberty chevelle and vanishing paint. I'll definitely be there to check it out.❤😊
OK, my two cents from a retired contractor.
That's exactly what he said he's going to do that's y his brother is building windows and doors and he's already put new roof on
That’s what I heard too, like most contractors he didn’t listen.
Im not a contractor. Sell it and start over
That makes too much sense, lets not do that LOL.
"Vice Grip Dairy Division". Maybe?
Anyone just showing up at Dereks home is completely unacceptable. They may not have malicious intent but they also lack common sense, manners and proper upbringing. Intent aside, trespassing is trespassing and i wouldn't blame you for prosecution
Took the words out of my fingers.
💯💯💯 Demolition Ranch Matt made a video about that stuff too. Ridiculous how crazy people can get. Makes me worried for them and other big TH-camrs
I thought he had a b+b?
Hi Derek, I have an idea on your museum Project. instead of a product line, maybe you could start "another brick in the wall" project or a "we the people" wall for example. if any of your subscribers donate money to this project, there name would be written on a brick in the building. it would give folks a chance to see there name if they visited the museum or maybe randomly in future videos. I know myself, i have a VGG gift certificate i would gladly give back for the project. Just food for thought, Keep up the good work Derek, you and your family are doing an awesome job.
That's a darn good idea, I'd be in for a few myself. Heck sell em for whatever and they'd sell.
I love that idea!
I think it's a great idea but you definitely need volunteers. I love to see old buildings restored
Yep, great Idea, a wall inside with subscribers on it for a few bucks a brick - if 400K paid $3 a brick, that would raise $1.2M - should definitely get that museum up and running
I would pay for a brick
Get a stencil cutter and let people buy a brick in the building. $20 gets your name and town and state on a brick. That way fans get to be a permanent part of VGG.
I'm thinking more like 200 a brick. That place needs easily 200k worth of work.
20 bucks a brick is pretty cheap... he has a decent following... maybe not 200 a brick... but 100 give or take...
This is a fellers “don’t randomly show up where my wife and kids live” building
Facts! Why would anyone think it’s ok to show up at a stranger’s house uninvited? We may FEEL like we know Derek and his family, but we don’t. It’s incredibly presumptuous of anyone to think that he or his family want strangers showing up at their home.
And the people that think it's ok to show up at his home are the most dangerous.. nut jobs. He's way too cool about it imo
Cable Guy 😁
Yeah Ive heard of more than one youtubin' guy have problems with people showing up to their work or homes. It's one thing if you bump into someone out in the wild and say hey. But inserting yourself into their private lives is shockingly disrespectful.
Cant believe people do that. So rude and just weird.
We need more GOOD people like Derek in our country. Keeping the car community alive.
There are a lot of Derek's out there. ❤
Midwest used to create these type of folks
Derek is the best! If he can't do it nobody can!😊
We are still here, saving every obd 1 and obd 2 ,replenishing them mechanically and driving them to and from work everyday,I dont have the set up he does but all my boys drive towncars and just keeping them going and updated is my favorite thing to do,right around KC is a million of us.
Derick is family, country and cars. The American way 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Agree Derek, you and your family don't need any of us showing up at your house or rusty acres, etc., unless you personally invite us. You and your family's safety and peace of mind need to be the number one priority. Best wishes and God's blessings to you and your family. 😊
Plus, just simple privacy!
❤❤❤ amen I wish I could help good luck people please help
Sign me up I live a few hours away and was already thinking of donating time and my skills
@@brentgates6363 you read my mind
I was thinking the same thing, independence needs a permanent spot in the museum since it's retired
I agree independance should be in your museum but also would love to see it running to some degree.
Came to say or upvote this. Independence brought me to the channel.
That's really nice of you! :)
Derek, you have 2 years of content without another rescue.
VGG 5-year plan has been booked for my viewing.
Not to.mention he is often times on the road and his wife and kids are home alone. Not cool people.
Moooooving into vice grip museum?
Derek,
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I was a county building inspector for our rural farm community in Indiana.
Completely agree, turn it into a call out to the VGNation. I know the response would be massive and a joy to watch. Getting done, lickety split.
I was thinking the same thing but because I'm from OZ but a Kiwi we would help for a beer or 3
I live in germany but would love to help 😂
IMHO
I believe you need to make something there thats going to pay you some money. Because you are going to spend some/a lot of money.
I think the “Motorcycle room” would be a cool place for some of Little Grip Garage’s projects.
Ditto! Was thinking there needs to be a LGG Project corner and 'merch' rack.
Absolutely!
i think by the time it's done it will be Bieri brothers. They wont be little anymore
That and the random snowmobiles.
Don't ever change.....you are so grounded in you work, family and your faith! I have never worked on a car, but I will always watch your channel.
Set up dates, have materials and a plan ready, and use the hands that show up.
great idea!!!
Exactly what I was thinking ! Many people would love to lend a hand to help a feller out!

100 %
Ya these building codes are ridiculous!
Probably keep the independence chevelle in there most of the time though
@@BackroadBoys23 Absolutely. Make it the centerpiece for sure.
Derek keep up the great work, these old buildings are the backbone of small towns across America and need to be restored. If you are in need of plumbing and heating supplies Ferguson Enterprises can help let me know and would be glad to assist.
Thank you!!
If Matt can build a building and redo a house buy a hotel you got this look at the car turn out that build is 👍🏻
Long time business owner here.
I totally agree with this post. Hire and get it done. Much more gooder will come out of that for the community, fans, and you don’t have the time.
I agree, a restaurant/bar could easily be next.
Agreed,I see vgg merch here in Oklahoma.
I can feel the nervous excitement and anxiety in your voice. Good Luck Derek. Lots of work but we all know you're not afraid of that. Will continue to support you and your great channel.
Hey Derek, maybe you should do a cleanup day or weekend and let fans come down to help you get this all cleaned up.......
Was thinking the same thing... lots of fans that have various skills as well that could help with electric and plumbing, etc.
I was thinking same!! Derek is probably worried about liability. Some people 🤦♂️ Like going to his house.
I assume it's not really a liability issue with insured professionals and a contract. Good idea and I bet there'd be a good few people who could and would show up.
I was thinking the same thing
Fans shouldn't be showing up at your house or shop unannounced. Jess and the kids would be a bit nervous when Derek is out of town
@gtoger - Good to see you here at VGL (VGG). I am waiting patiently for your next drum beat video 😁
Derrick, my buddy and I used to do mitigation work (fires, flooding, etc.) and would happily come help you clean that building free of charge. Just get a dumpster and we could be there.
That would be amazing . Thank You for offering your time !
Have a vice grip lodge demo day
I’d wear just my underwear if it gets the views, I heard butts in the internet gets views.
That's cool to know ! Hopefully they can find some old pics of the milk plant.
Best channel on TH-cam by far.
What a stand up guy. And the family of course!
I think for sure your dad’s Buick needs to be here. He deserves to be honored.
Yep, your Dad's Buick and Independence 👍😎👍

Derek you have a very strong VGG community and I am sure you would have plenty of volunteers to help you with this project.
You have given so much to the VGG fans and I am sure they would love to help you by lending a hand with whatever skill sets they have to bring the building to a future VGG building
All you have to do is give the word and you wont believe the people that would come to help you out , plus the donation of materials needed for this project.
Make it the VGG fans community building and call it the VGG Milk Shop Museum
It would be a great place to hang out for events, sit downs and have some cold snacks.
Good Luck
Too bad you moved, my office was in MN.
You could have a joint venture with Little grip garage and showcase his projects as well that would be awesome
Yes! Prayers!
Derek,
Great video!
Derek and family you will be blessed. You’re doing a good thing. I feel the honesty in your voice. God bless you.

Talk with them and let them get to know you and your plan - getting them on your side for city council meetings is key. Best of luck and can’t wait to see the progress! Prayers for you and your family!

Good Luck.
Pretty cool idea. I can understand how you feel about your home...I wouldn't want random people stopping by either. Sorry this is happening.
Before I read any comments I knew that people would be offering to donate materials or their expertise to this project--and sure enough, the comments are full of those type of offers.

Completely agree, not enough parking, ask for qualified contractors to donate their time, no loans, start “go fund me”.
Actually they were called a creamery. Had one across the street from my house growing up.
The '35 Ford pickup would be cool in there. Could even toss some milk crates with bottles in the bed.
@@oghaz3y7 You probably shouldn't watch then. Seems you have a problem with successful people.
I was thinking the old glass that had wire mesh in it. My school a long time ago had it
@@SUNRIDGE128 that works as well but it looks terrible.
@@markholub97 but old🧱
Hey, Feller!
Get 😅 a bunch of people for a Bbq and beer and put them to work
Its good to see Krang back in a video again, I always enjoy the words of wisdom he provides.
😂😂😂 agree!!
I love the idea of having a vgg museum and place to come and see Derek and family, as well as some of the channel cars, especially Liberty chevelle and vanishing paint. I'll definitely be there to check it out.❤😊
