Why do you mention "Greek" back then, when there was no state called "Greece" prior to the 19th century. The ancient language of that time was Koine, made up of different languages, used mainly as a communicative language throughout that world.

I ask because I know the official language in the Macedonian court during Phillip's II and Alexander's times as king was "Koine Greek". However, it is mentioned in many sources where even Plutarch himself says that Alexander spoke a language to his Macedonian troops that the Greeks could not understand and labelled as Barbarian. I speculate that most of the proof of this language was burned / destroyed during the Burning of the Library of Alexandria, the overthrowing of the Macedonian renaissance in the Byzantine empire, etc.
Why mix in the Paeonians? I ask about the Paeonian language becuase it seems that the Paeonian Kingdom is yet to be "claimed" by Greece. However, recently the last fortress of the Paeonian Dynasty was found in Bylazora, a town close to the city Sveti Nikole (coincidentally my name is Mik... Mik sveti Nikole xD). Therefore, if Greece claims that the Paeonians were in fact Greek, that would mean that the Greeks would be claiming that almost all of the last pieces of Macedonia belong to them. This means that Greece's historians are at a BIG contradiction. They claim that Macedonia is Greek, and yet, here we are with a Kingdom all the way in the North of "North" Macedonia. What is Greek? I ask the Greek historians. Do you need to move your border up now so that it includes us? That would mean you would need to re-write your own history? Or, were these Paeonians not related to Greeks / Macedonians at all? Where is this imaginary line that divides us? Knowing the language of the Paeonians will be a critical piece of evidence to finding out the truth and giving peace of mind to both Greece and Macdonia, or at least, to the people who wish to find out the Truth, not just the facts that support their unchosen ethnicity.
@Dimitris Dervenis The Paeonians fought in the Trojan War. How could they have been speaking a Greek language (as you claim) before they even contacted a Greek person?
@Dimitris Dervenis Brother Dimitris, you say "artifacts don't contain enough evidence to tell us which Greek it was but it was Greek". (1) How can you identify a language to be Greek without specficially pointing to the type of Greek? (2) "There is only 1 piece of Evidence" No, there is more. Where are the letters and the words from the tomb in Vergina, where Andronikos apparantly discovered the grave of Phillip V? There is only 1 that they (Greek Gov) choose to show you. (3) I will look at the links! (4) What is your opinion on Homer's using words the Macedonians use today!?
ΑΡΧΕΛΑΟΣ the king of Macedonia in the 5th century B.C. truely organised athletic and theatrical events in the holly town of Dion. All the ancient Greek cities participated. Right! Why do you mention "Greek" for ancient times, when there was no such a term. The Latin "Graecus" was introduced by Romans, 2 centuries after the death of Alexander the Great.
And Helenic culture ended with the start of Roman time in 148 BC. Province Macedonia have been established at the same time . People are evil ! They still remember the colapsed Roman time and ramparting of Macedonia . Lunatics ! They still think that Macedonia is on a bid !
The right term is Hellenes. That is what we call ourselves. Now and in ancient times... Now ... About the terms "Greek" and "Ionians".... All the western civilizations called us "Greeks", because the first settlers who colonized italy were from a part of Hellas called Graecia (Γραικία). The first who called us "Greeks" were the Italians at 8 th century BC. Italians named southern Italy "Magna Graecia" , because at that time southern Italy was full of Hellenic colonists. In the other hand the eastern civilizations, such as Persians, Turks, Chinese etc, call us "Younanistan", meaning "Land of the Ionians", because the first Hellenic settlers, who colonized the east, were Ionians.
Of course there was, the GRAIKOI are mentioned by Aristotle: «…και γάρ ούτος (ο κατακλυσμός του Δευκαλίωνα), περί τον ελληνικόν εγένετο μάλιστα τόπον και τούτου περί την Ελλάδα την αρχαίαν αύτη δ’ έστιν η περί Δωδώνην και τον Αχελώον ούτος γαρ πολλαχού το ρεύμα μεταβέβληκεν. Ώκουν γαρ οι Σελλοί ενταύθα και οι καλούμενοι τότε μεν Γραικοί, νυν δε Έλληνες». -Αριστοτέλης [Μετεωρολογικά 1 352 Α] "The deluge in the time of Deucalion, for instance, took place chiefly in the Hellenic world and in it especially about ancient Hellas, the country about Dodona and the Achelous a river which has often changed its course. Here the Selli (Selloi) dwelt and those who were formerly called Graeci and now Hellenes." -Aristotle [Meteorology 1 352 A] classics.mit.edu/Aristotle/meteorology.1.i.html ^^^^Romans adopted the term Grakoi from the first Greeks they encountered and called all Hellenes Graeci. @Konstantin Trehagyrevopoulos bro why are you uptight, why tf does it even matter what you just said, chill out and see that Greek and macedonian all stem from the proto-indo European branch anyway. Do you hate Bulgarians, macedonians, Slavs, that much that you want to put them in "their place"? You should go check your DNA, cause it turns out every single one of us isn't a 100% greek or a 100% macedonian or 100% bulgarian. Stop acting like a child and realise the potential we have together as a group, instead of leaving hateful comments that only reinforce political agenda and national supremacy, which is helpful to no one.
@Konstantin Trehagyrevopoulos I just want to let you know that the way you talk about this makes it seem as if it's supposed to be an insult? Like the way you dont even acknowledge current macedonians and their name respectfully. I mean you say that historically current macedonians, aren't connected to the ancient macedonians, but then expect me to believe that current Greeks are connected to the ancient greeks/hellens? As if somehow ancient macedonians or whoever just suddenly vanished leaving no trace? If you know history, you will know that on the Balkans there have been so many invasions, so many wars, so many people, that there is no way Greeks are the same from then, the same way current Macedonians are? You know the Ottoman invasion and all of that happend, even Byzantine and Roman. You think those invaders only eradicated the ancient Macedonians and left the Greeks alone? That they kept a great watch on the current map of Macedonia and Bulgaria and Greece, and said : hey let's not touch the Greeks, they are special?? We are the same people with the same struggle. And leave Alexander the Great alone, you don't know what he was and he is deceased, it is wrong to talk about and start unnecessary wars about what he was. Does it even matter to that extent? Be proud as a human for the accomplishments he has done and use for inspiration. He was a great man and now let him rest in peace.
@Konstantin Trehagyrevopoulos I'm assuming your greek, and you know the Greek language, good for you. But before you spew it out theories and "facts", and create unnecessary internet disputes, make sure you understand the "opposing" side of your argument. Have you ever researched the Macedonian language? Have you spent some time learning about the adjectives, prefixes, grammar of it? As I said, both current macedonian and greek stem from the indo-european language branch, which means both languages have the same roots.
@Konstantin Trehagyrevopoulos did you not understand what I said to you? Language and people mix when they are together. If you say alexander was Greek, he sure as hell isn't the as Greeks nowadays. I don't care if Alexander was greek, Albanian or macedonian. You talk about slavic and bulgarian and Macedonian propaganda, but then fail to realise and see that there is also a Greek propaganda? The Greeks didn't invent everything, the Greek alphabet even stems from the phoenician one. It's pointless to argue about this stuff. We should ALL have the platform to theorise and talk about history in a FREE manner, without any hate and I can see that you have a lot of hate towards slavic/bulgarian/Macedonian people. I don't understand why so much. The people themselves of these countries do not hate Greeks, they hate the fact that only one idea is supported by the world and no other theories or debates are open. I am free to believe whatever I want, as you do too, but do not force this on anyone else, there will always be people who will think differently than us. You don't even know real history because you weren't there when it happend. Sources and all things can be manipulated. I don't know what Alexander was, I don't care if he was Greek, egyptian, Norse or whatever, and it doesn't matter. Use his life as an inspiration and stop wasting your valuable time that you have so little off on this earth to defend a deceased man who accomplished more than me and you, not because he talked about how other people are wrong, but about what people are right about, and used it to an advantage to advance his people and empire. He didn't spend time talking about how great he is, he went out and became great. So if you too, care so much about what he was, maybe you should first ensure that you care about what he stood for. A unified people, able to be wise and educated, free to think, free to live.
Thank you for another great episode, Mario. What a good idea to have a Q&A.! I’m sure I speak for all your followers when I say I appreciate the time, effort and dedication you put into sharing your love for Macedonia with us all when, as a young professional, you have a busy career and social life to fit into your schedule. I believe that one of the best ways we can honour our ancestors is to understand where we came from and who we are and respect their memory. Not only have I learned things I didn’t previously know, (from a younger compatriot) but you have exposed me to some beautiful Macedonian music which is new to me. For example, I had never heard "Solunskite Gemigji" (from your previous episode) but now I can’t get enough of it and frequently have it on replay. Macedonian music is simply the best in the Balkans - even our various neighbours, in every direction of the compass, say so! The other point I want to make is that I admire not only your dedication in making these videos but your COURAGE in showing your face and using your real name, which demonstrates your belief in and confidence in what you present. Many of the opposition, a large number of them trolls, visit to leave abuse using fake names and profiles - it shows they don’t have the courage of their convictions. You expose yourself to a certain amount of risk (of personal harassment) so I do not underestimate your efforts. You are a proud young Macedonian and a role model for our youth and I wish you every success. And please........keep the videos coming!
Honestly you just made my day, week if not month :D Your comment is what I would have written if I spent a week figuring out the best way to show appreciation to Mario, not only he is being his true self, he is also sharing the knowledge as he has read/learned/understood, not making his own assumptions and opinions like 99% of the other people talking on this topic, which is what I think Macedonian history lacks of, everyone is talking only about "THEIR" side and believing/reading only about what fits into their ideas. Thank you, Mario and Mel Lake wishing you all the best in your lives!
Thank you for your comment, @@gjavolgjavolot9500 . Yes, I admire and respect Mario because he is fair, balanced, knowledgeable and passionate. And he doesn't just talk the talk - he walks the walk. I think it's important to regularly give positive feedback and encouragement to those who commit so much time and effort for our benefit as the world is so full of negativity. I hope Mario realizes that he has made a positive and empowering impact on so many of his viewers. Knowledge is power - and if we are armed with knowledge, we can resist the negative forces against us in every direction. All the best to you, too - and stay positive......but we won't be browbeaten by the more powerful.
@marioshistorytalks First of all you don't know if there are grek names, second Alexandar speaks in Macedonian to his soldiers and is at least a record of that.
Under no circumstances was the Treaty of Bucharest legal. Nobody asked the Macedonians whether they wanted their territory to be occupied and carved up. Occupiers making their own terms is in fact illegal, since it never consulted the majority of the population living there, which were the Macedonians. And, since a part of the territory has been independent since 1991, the Republic of Macedonia, that means that the treaty itself is NULL AND VOID.
Mario what's your views on the Bitola inscription???... what's your views on the Greek Macedonian heroes from Solun, Konstantinos Velios and Emmanuel Pappas, which actually founded Nea Pella and the Greek Filiki Eteria committee and fought for Ottamon Macedonia to be annexed by the Greek kingdom in 1821?? ... how do you explain Hristo Tartarchev, (along with Dame Gruev) was an initial founder of IMRO, which in his memoirs admitted his Bulgarian heritage, that the movement was solely Bulgarian (Exarchist) and Macedonian autonomy being only political??? How do you explain Basil ll after defeating Samuel's Army, he was renowned as the BULGARslayer??? ...what's your views on the Miladinov Brothers, wording their songs as "Bulgarski Narodni Pesni" not Macedonian?? (Later communists removed the Bulgarian part), what's your views on the Serb "Stojan Novakovic" which was a founder of the term Macedonism, in 1885 utilising it as a tool to eradicate Bulgarianism from regional Macedonia?? no hate, but in the Macedonist arguments you guys have way too many inconsistencies!
There was and there is no such thing Greek Macedonians, The name Macedonia was forbidden until the late 1980's when the reality of an independent Macedonian state was inevitable .Before that the region was known as Northern Greece. Asian minor refugees are not Macedonians . In genetic studies they're shown to be close to Georgians and Armenians, some of them are actual Greeks. Dame Gruev wasn't a Bulgarian. The label Bulgarian had different connotation in different periods of time. You should read about the social history of the Ottoman Empire. "Ethnicity" was often a label for different social classes or professions. It was also connected with church affiliation.
The Greeks in the so-called Greek Macedonia in the the 19th century were only 10% of the population. Manastiir (Bitola) did not have a lot of Greeks, again is about church affiliation. Kostur is the original name of the mentioned city. We're not west- Bulgarians James Baker. You spread absurd conspiracy theories that were started by Bulgars. You don't have the right to tell us how should we identify. Greek Macedonians were the one invented by politics, practically over night. I did mentioned that Macedonia was taboo name before 1988. People should ask about the great number of Arvanites and Vlachs in the Greek Revolution. How do you explain the fact that Athens was seen as area populated by Albanians. Greece is as spoiled political entity that is in permanent debt crisis, creation of the great powers.

Great video Mario.I would suggest you make a video about the Slavonic culture.Who are the slavonic people , how did they appear , what are they? Was it just an socio-political umbrella label for the already existing population? Were they already present here , or the whole theory about the arrival is just misunderstood and misused fragment of history.Personally , i don't think it happened. There is no archaeological or material proof , neither there is such a thing in the folk tales of the Balkan people.Something is wrong about this theory.Would appreciate a lot if you consider the topic.
From what genetics tell us today, the Slavs may well have originated from their ancient homeland in the middle Dnieper of the Ukraine in a study by Rebala et al. They migrated into Europe circa 500 AD.
Judging by your nationalistic presence on other videos and channels , you are the last person whose opinion should be taken seriously.Please.First of all , the Balkan people have very similar genetics. You cannot rely on genetics for that , therefore the greeks can stop having wet dreams about being connected to the inhabitants of the hellenic city states of the ancient era. They have nothing in common , except a modified language that survived through the Eastern Roman Empire. The whole thing about the greeks being something is a 19th century German invention , nothing else.Second , the inhabitants of the Balkans have different genetics from the inhabitants of North-Eastern Europe. If someone came down here , it would have mixed with the already existing population , so they would be mixed , and by that you cannot select a specific group of people and "send them back to their swamps" , like you nationalists claim. The theory that has my support is that Slavonic is just an cultural and linguistical group. And logically , if there was a migration it would have happened from the South to the North , not vice versa.Because the North-East was a poor area with harsh climate in which existence wasn't promised much , so you cannot expect some illiterate and economically and materially weaker people to attack and assimilate a civilization that resided south. They could have attacked , but they could hardly settle.I mean , the Avars attacked and were much stronger , but hey , they didn't settle , but these so called slavic tribes just popped out of nowhere and started eradicating everything that found it's way before them. Please , sell this nonsense elsewhere. Plus , in the folklore of the Balkan people no such a thing is mentioned. If the migration was huge and pressuring , it should have had it's memory in the folklore of the people. But , hoosh , nothing of it exists. So , i think nothing of such happened , it is just a misunderstood fragment of history presented by few Eastern Roman scripts , or rather i would say misused history, a fairy tale-theory created for political purposes by the fanatics of the 19th century.
@@damian5071 As for the Slavic homeland, research by Rebala et al, 2008, again suggests the Slavic homeland was in the middle Dnieper of the Ukraine. Rebala also clusters Macedonian Slavs and Bulgars together, with the same results as the Cyril and Methodius University.
@@damian5071 Secondly !'m not a nationalist. I'm a realist. Was Macedonia ever Greek??? NO!!! It was an ancient Greek Kingdom, then it became a Roman Province, than a Byzantine Province, The Greeks abandoned Macedonia, It was then settled on by Slavic, Bulgarian and Avar people, It then became a Bulgarian province, it then became Ottoman before finally becoming Greek in the early 20th century. Black Tengu 1) All credible historians state that the Macedonian language was unintelligible to the Hellenes and they back this view with numerous examples of situations when Alexander spoke Macedonian, especially when he didn’t want his Greek troops to understand what he was saying - but his Macedonian troops did understand. The evidence is derived from ancient Greek historians who didn’t have the political agenda of modern Greece. When the new-born nation of Greece was invented in the 1800s, some Greek academics began to twist the historic records, though to their credit, a handful have remained true and honest. “Greeks viewed the Macedonians as barbarians, like their Thracian and Illyrian neighbors. An exception was made only for members of the ruling Argead house, who claimed to be the descendants of immigrants from Argos. More important, although the Macedonian kings encouraged the Hellenisation of the Macedonian nobility, Macedonian and Greek culture had little in common.” MACEDONIAN SOCIETY AND KINSHIP Professor E.N.BORZA 2) Your second quote is nonsensical in this context. Thracians, Illyrians, etc were all from the same territory but each developed their own culture, language and ultimately, identity - which is something that keeps evolving, continuously. All Balkans peoples are derived from the same population pool. “The old view that the Macedonians had their origins as a Greek people has been largely discredited, except by those for whom Greek origins for the Macedonians is a necessary component of Balkan politics. Professor Borza on ‘Greek view on Macedonia prior 1900’ Chester G. Starr, Bentley Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Michigan: “The Acarnanians, Aetolians, and other Greeks dwelling in the forests and fertile plains of northwest Greece remained backward tribal peoples. To their east lay the large but weak kingdom of Macedonia. This was not counted as Greek, though its stock was closely related.” (Chester G. Starr, ‘A History of the Ancient World’, Oxford University Press, New York and Oxford, 1991, p. 260) "Macedonia was essentially a tribal kingdom, far larger than any Greek state but so loosely organised and beset by even more barbarian neighbours that it had never been important. Its kings had fostered Greek culture at their courts and been accepted as Greek by the officials of the Olympic games; but the peasantry and nobles, though akin to the Greeks, were considered distinct." Crossland concludes that this development was a matter of administrative efficiency. Although it was the Macedonians who HAD TO LEARN GREEK at first, the same requirement was made of at least some of his Persian troops after many conquests. For a long while Alexander thought that Greek was the best language to use as the common medium of communication among the peoples of his empire, ‘and not because Macedonian was similar to it.” Nevertheless, as we have already noted, even by the latter part of his Asian campaigns, alexander’s infantry still DID NOT SPEAK A GREEK LANGUAGE.” P28 “However, after a time the value of Greek culture to the Macedonian’s cause began to fade. Eventually Alexander began to think in terms of BLENDING the diverse cultures of his great empire. The ecclesiastical pretensions of the Greeks are ludicrous enough, but they are not to be dismissed with a laugh. They have introduced a SAVAGERY into the relations of official "Hellenism" and the Bulgarian peasantry, which makes for something more than comedy.” "Not less remarkable than the small size of Hellas was the small size of the Hellenes themselves. But it is much more easy to trace the boundaries of the one upon the modern map than it is to trace the blood of the other in the bodies of the modern inhabitants. We have no accurate record of the proportions of free citizens who alone constituted the true Hellenes, but they were at most a SMALL MINORITY among the large population of helots and slaves." ("The Nineteenth Century a Monthly Review", edited by James Knowles, Vol. VI, July-December 1879, page 932)
Professor Harl does agree with Borza who also agrees with Hammond that the Macedionian language was a very early form of Greek unintelligible to southern Greeks. Borza calls it PROTO-GREEK. Harl also goes on to say that the Proto-Greeks who inhabited north western Greece split three ways somewhere around 2000 BC. One group went east and settled in Asia Minor to become Phrygians, another group went into southern Greece to become the Dorians or Doric Greeks and the rest remained in north western Greece to become Macedonians and Mollossians. In other words southern Greeks, Phrygians, Macedonians and Epirotes had one common PROTO-GREEK ancestor.

There was no “Greece” until 1830 and, as historians have stated, as much as five sixths of the population was Albanian. The rest of modern Greece, which came into being in 1913, was populated by Macedonian “Slavs”, Vlachs, Turks, Jews and more Albanians (as testified by Professor Hammond himself as well as countless Greek and non-Greek historians). Of course, the myth of a connection to antiquity had to be invented in order to connect and unite all these different ethnicities and it worked a treat! As (Greek) Mr Dimou says, you have to carry that burden of unrealistic, unfair and untrue expectation for as long as you are in denial of your true heritage. The same myth which has created a nation of arrogant, conceited narcissists who falsely believe they have achieved “glory” despite the fact they have nothing to do with antiquity - and look down on their neighbours instead of extending the hand of friendship. (Apologies to all the decent Greeks out there - I know you exist.) The irony is lost on this breed of citizens from a nation, not yet 200 years old, the absurdity of stating certain people never existed before, (How is this physically possible? Did Tito wave his magic wand or press his time machine?) though in reality, all European nations were created in the last two centuries, some becoming independent nations decades later than the Republic of Macedonia, but you don’t hear their neighbours spitting the dummy like the pseudo Hellenes. But let’s be honest. We know what the real issue (fear) is, don’t we? And it has nothing to do with antiquity nor with Alex himself.
@@JapanMonAmourTheJapanHouse(cont) in 1837 Iakovos Rizos Neroulos, the first president of the prestigious Archaeological Society at Athens and an eminent intellectual, vehemently denounced Alexander the Great as a foreigner to the Greek people. “The idea of Greece as the birthplace of civilization is really only about two hundred years old. The notion was developed through the course of the nineteenth century, when circumstances in Europe determined the need for an appropriate history and genealogy.” Ulrich Wilken, a German historian” The Greeks have not taken much interest in their past until Europeans became enthusiastic discoverers and diggers of their ruins. "Here is the ultimate Greek tragedy: that of a country forced to treat everything familiar at the time of the nation-state´s foundation as ´foreign´ while importing a CULTURE LARGELY INVENTED- or at least - redesigned by German classicists of the late eighteenth early nineteenth centuries. For many decades, and almost without interruption, Greeks were forced to put aside music, art and language that were deemed too tainted by the ´oriental´ influences of Ottoman, Arab, Slavic and Albanian culture; to forget the partially Albanian roots of Athens and its environs…" ("The Body Impolitic" by Michael Herzfeld, page 9.) "I have already said, and I will repeat it, that not one-fifth of the present population can with justice be called Greeks. @@JapanMonAmourTheJapanHouse (cont) “When Athens was chosen as the site for the modern capital of the new nation, and its (re)construction was planned along lines of Hellenic purity, the unsettling evidence of Greece´s Ottoman heritage along with local vernacular forms had to be confronted, all the more so when situated in the immediate vicinity of remains of classical antiquity. Early nineteenth-century Athens was viewed as a ´disgraceful site´ (Boyer 1996: 163) full of imperfections, ranging from the city´s physical aspect to the spoken language that called for, ´filtering-out´ interventions." ("Contested Landscapes Movement, Exile and Place", Edited by Barbara Bender and Margot Winer, page 23) "…the historical ABSURDITY of declaring Hellenic civilization the expression of a culture uncontaminated by foreign elements can be explained by a simple fact that tends to be disregarded - namely, that Hellenic civilization that we know it was in effect the INVENTION of the ´Science of Antiquity´, of Classics. ("Dream Nation Enlightenment, Colonization and the Institution of Modern Greece", by Stathis Gourgouris, page 134) . The population was a residue of invaders of all peoples, and notable of Slavs. For centuries the Greeks properly so called had disappeared from Greece. From the time of the Roman conquest, Greece was regarded by every adventurer as a nursery of slaves, which everyone might have recourse to with impunity." ("The Psychology of Socialism", by Gustav Lo Bon, page 206) Considering Greece currently has a population of around ten million, where did these 9 million come from? Perhaps Tito was able to bring back the Hellenes, considering his magical powers. "The Greek influence which has partially Hellenized the Vlachs of Macedonia to-day can hardly date from before the Turkish conquest. It is the work not of the Byzantine Empire but of the modern Church, and seems to have reached its height during the eighteenth century." ("Macedonia its races and the future", by H. N. You need to remember that Tsar Samuel had to call his empire Bulgarian, because 150 years before that there was a theme of Macedonia in the Eastern Balkans which lasted for 600 years. it was impossible for him to call his Empire Macedonia.
@James Baker I think I explained exactly why he called it Bulgarian. Why is it only the Macedonians use the correct name Samoil which was found on his tomb? Byzantine is a made up name it was called the East Roman Empire not Greek empire. According to your logic the same would apply to Basil who ruled a slavic land and it is said he spoke Greek with a strong accent. Why name a slavic land and people, theme of Macedonia? If his subjects and himself were not Macedonian? Because Bulgarians learnt slavic from the Macedonians? Why was Greece never a theme of Macedonia or were the people of that time Nikopolis, Hellas and Peloponneusus. Bulgar Slayer is first mentioned 150 years after the battle took place. Lastly why are there no old Frecsos of Saint Clement in Bulgaria. All of them are located in Greece, Macedonia, Albania and Serbia.

I am Alexander of Macedon.” (Herodotus, The Histories, 9.45) 2) “Your ancestors came to Macedonia and the rest of Greece and did us great harm, though we had done them no prior injury. I have been appointed leader of the Greeks, and wanting to punish the Persians I have come to Asia, which I took from you…” (Alexander’s letter to Persian king Darius in response to a truce plea, as quoted in “Anabasis Alexandri” by Arrian, Book II, 14, 4). Macedonia and the REST OF Greece… 3) “There are Greek troops, to be sure, in Persian service - but how different is their cause from ours! They will be fighting for pay - and not much of at that; we, on the contrary, shall fight for Greece, and our hearts will be in it.” (Addressing his troops prior to the Battle of Issus, as quoted in Anabasis Alexandri by historian Arrian, Book II, 7) Alexander the Great addressing the dead Greeks of the Battle of Chaeronea: 4) “Holy shadows of the dead, I’m not to blame for your cruel and bitter fate, but the accursed rivalry which brought sister nations and brother people, to fight one another. I do not feel happy for this victory of mine. On the contrary, I would be glad, brothers, if I had all of you standing here next to me, since we are united by the same language, the same blood and the same visions.” (Historiae Alexandri Magni, 6.3.11, by Roman historian Quintus Curtius Rufus).

@Dimitris Dervenis Macedonians have been considered as non Greeks and their own separate people EVEN BY GREEKS throughout the whole of history, you can’t just out of nowhere in the 20th century make them Greek 😂 just because Greeks are jealous of Macedonian history and want to claim it for themselves 🤣🤣 that’s the problem their having in convincing the world, because they can’t hide all the true history and knowledge out there. What did others say about Macedonians? Here there is a relative abundance of information”, writes Borza, “from Arrian, Plutarch (Alexander, Eumenes), Diodorus 17-20, Justin, Curtius Rufus, and Nepos (Eumenes), based upon Greek and Greek-derived Latin sources. It is clear that over a five-century span of writing in two languages representing a variety of historiographical and philosophical positions the ancient writers regarded the Greeks and the Macedonians as two separate and distinct peoples whose relationship was marked by considerable antipathy, if not outright hostility.” Eugine Borza.
@Dimitris Dervenis At no point in time was Macedonia or Macedonians ever Greek While Demosthenes was still in exile, Alexander died in Babylon, and the Greek states combined yet again to form a league against Macedon. Demosthenes attached himself to the Athenian convoys, and threw all his energies into helping them incite the various states to attack the Macedonians and drive them out of Greece.” [p.212] Plutarch, ‘The Age of Alexander’ [Plutarch here specifically distinguishes Greece from Macedonia.][2] M.Cary in his book “The Geographic background of Greek and Roman History” (ICBN 0-313-23187-7) I find the following constituent parts of Greece: Epirus, Acarnania, The Ionian Isles, Aetolia, Thessaly, The Spercheu Valley, Locris, Phocis, Boeotia, Euboea, Attica, Aegina, Corinth, Achaea, Elis, Arcadia, Argolis, Laconia, Messenia, The Greek Archipelago, Crete, The Outer Isles, The Northern Aegean, The East Aegean, Rhodes, ………. and of course, No Macedonia. Why M. Cary would omit Macedonia from the general description of Greece? Perhaps for the same reason the German classical scholar Bursian failed to include Macedonia in his otherwise comprehensive geographical survey of Greece “Geographie von Griechenland”. Macedonia was simply different country then Greece. [3] On p. 91 in “Hellenistic World” by F.W.Walbank we find: “It is necessary, in any assessment of the role of Macedonia in the hellenistic world to bear in mind that although our sources naturally, being Greek or based on Greek writers, lay their emphasis on Macedonian policy towards Greece, Macedonia was in fact equally a Balkan power for which the northern, western and north-eastern frontiers were always vital and for which strong defenses and periodic punitive expeditions over the border were fundamental policy.” “…. Macedonians were an essential bulwark to the north of Greece“. [Self-explanatory][4] In N.G.L.Hammond’s book “The Macedonian State” on p. 141 states: “Philip and Alexander attracted many able foreigners, especially Greeks, to their service, and many of these were made Companions.” [The operative word is “foreigners-especially Greeks”, which shows that even Hammond forgets to tow the line.][5] In “Makedonika” by Eugene Borza on p. 164 we read: “Alexander seem to have imported troupes of performers from Greece.” [One does not import from his own country, does he?]

Slavs had settled in the Balkans since the 7th century, including Macedonia and large parts of Greece. [13] This brought about profound ethnic changes: the Slavs mingled with the local population, which was made up of ancient Macedonians and other ethnic elements. As early as the 7th century, Macedonia was evidently so influenced by Slavs that Byzantine sources also referred to it as Sklavinia (Σκλαυινία). [15] However, the Byzantine culture remained in the cities for a long time. In the Eastern Roman-Byzantine Empire, the Slavs became an important factor and secured extensive settlement areas mainly in the heartland of the geographical Macedonia and Thrace, while the Greeks traditionally settled on the coasts except for a few islands in the interior.

Question! What language did the Paeonian's speak?

Of course there was, the GRAIKOI are mentioned by Aristotle:

Here the Selli (Selloi) dwelt and those who were formerly called Graeci and now Hellenes."

Honestly you just made my day, week if not month :D
Your comment is what I would have written if I spent a week figuring out the best way to show appreciation to Mario, not only he is being his true self, he is also sharing the knowledge as he has read/learned/understood, not making his own assumptions and opinions like 99% of the other people talking on this topic, which is what I think Macedonian history lacks of, everyone is talking only about "THEIR" side and believing/reading only about what fits into their ideas.

I can answer all your points in a future video. Cheers
Mario Hristovski looking forward to it 👍 thanks

There was and there is no such thing Greek Macedonians, The name Macedonia was forbidden until the late
1980's when the reality of an independent Macedonian state was inevitable .Before that the region was known as Northern Greece.
Kostur is the original name of
the mentioned city. We're not west- Bulgarians James Baker. You spread absurd conspiracy theories that were started by Bulgars. You don't have the right to tell us how should we identify. Greek Macedonians were the one invented by politics, practically over night. I did mentioned that Macedonia was taboo name before
1988. People should ask about the great number of Arvanites and Vlachs in the Greek Revolution. How do you explain the fact that Athens was seen as area populated by Albanians. Greece is as spoiled political entity that is in permanent debt crisis, creation of the great powers.

Bravo for the work Mario!
More important, although the Macedonian kings encouraged the Hellenisation of the Macedonian nobility, Macedonian and Greek culture had little in common.” MACEDONIAN SOCIETY AND KINSHIP Professor E.N.BORZA
2) Your second quote is nonsensical in this context.
Professor Borza on ‘Greek view on Macedonia prior 1900’
Chester G. 260)
"Macedonia was essentially a tribal kingdom, far larger than any Greek state but so loosely organised and beset by even more barbarian neighbours that it had never been important. Its kings had fostered Greek culture at their courts and been accepted as Greek by the officials of the Olympic games; but the peasantry and nobles, though akin to the Greeks, were considered distinct." “R.A. Crossland concludes that this development was a matter of administrative efficiency. Although it was the Macedonians who HAD TO LEARN GREEK at first, the same requirement was made of at least some of his Persian troops after many conquests. For a long while Alexander thought that Greek was the best language to use as the common medium of communication among the peoples of his empire, ‘and not because Macedonian was similar to it.” Nevertheless, as we have already noted, even by the latter part of his Asian campaigns, alexander’s infantry still DID NOT SPEAK A GREEK LANGUAGE.” P28
“However, after a time the value of Greek culture to the Macedonian’s cause began to fade. Eventually Alexander began to think in terms of BLENDING the diverse cultures of his great empire. Perhaps in order to appease his new Persian subjects, it was now the blending of Macedonian and Persian that mattered, rather than the blending of Macedonian and Greek.”

"Perhaps more intensely than anywhere else, Truth and History, in the Balkans, are national considerations. “It is a sorry transition to turn from this DREAM of a REVIVIED Hellenism which is to civilise the Near East once more, to the ACTUALITIES of Greek politics. One may say of the Greeks with equal truth that they are capable of superb devotion to an idea, or that they are the READY VICTIMS of any catch-word or abstraction.”
“The average Greek or Hellenised Vlach in Macedonia, who professes to believe that the whole population is Greek, is doubtless to a great extent the VICTIM OF HIS DAILY IMPRESSIONS.” H.N.Brailsford “The Greeks ARE NOT A MACEDONIAN RACE, though they have a power. The ecclesiastical pretensions of the Greeks are ludicrous enough, but they are not to be dismissed with a laugh. They have introduced a SAVAGERY into the relations of official "Hellenism" and the Bulgarian peasantry, which makes for something more than comedy.”
"Not less remarkable than the small size of Hellas was the small size of the Hellenes themselves. But it is much more easy to trace the boundaries of the one upon the modern map than it is to trace the blood of the other in the bodies of the modern inhabitants. We have no accurate record of the proportions of free citizens who alone constituted the true Hellenes, but they were at most a SMALL MINORITY among the large population of helots and slaves."
("The Nineteenth Century a Monthly Review", edited by James Knowles, Vol.

@@chris9473 Artificial state is one that was invented or created but never existed before - rather like north Macedonia. Greece though existed since ancient times. Korais was wrong to say that though because the Greeks are both ancient Hellenic and Romano-Byzantine. Romano-Byzantine Empire was a fusion of ancient Rome and ancient Greece. Korais should have said he is a Greco-Roman or a Romano-Greek.
@@JapanMonAmourTheJapanHouse What the blazes are you talking about? The modern nation of Greece NEVER EXISTED before 1830. It DID NOT exist even in ancient times - it is a modern German/French/English creation and they have owned you ever since they made you.
The Hellenes of antiquity (as stated by Professor Borza and other historians) were already multi-ethnic peoples within their own city states who were for a period, ruled by the Macedonians who defeated them, (annihilated Athens even) then controlled them and always considered themselves as separate peoples (see my numerous previous quotations from neutral sources across historic eras).
(Apologies to all the decent Greeks out there - I know you exist.)
The irony is lost on this breed of citizens from a nation, not yet 200 years old, the absurdity of stating certain people never existed before, (How is this physically possible? Did Tito wave his magic wand or press his time machine?) though in reality, all European nations were created in the last two centuries, some becoming independent nations decades later than the Republic of Macedonia, but you don’t hear their neighbours spitting the dummy like the pseudo Hellenes. But let’s be honest. We know what the real issue (fear) is, don’t we? And it has nothing to do with antiquity nor with Alex himself.

The population was a residue of invaders of all peoples, and notable of Slavs. For centuries the Greeks properly so called had disappeared from Greece. From the time of the Roman conquest, Greece was regarded by every adventurer as a nursery of slaves, which everyone might have recourse to with impunity."
("The Psychology of Socialism", by Gustav Lo Bon, page 206) Considering Greece currently has a population of around ten million, where did these 9 million come from?

What ancient macedonians believed about themselves????
1) “Men of Athens…Had I not greatly at heart the common welfare of Hellas I should not have come to tell you; but I am myself Hellene by descent, and I would not willingly see Hellas exchange freedom for slavery….If you prosper in this war, forget not to do something for my freedom; consider the risk I have run, out of zeal for the Hellenic cause, to acquaint you with what Mardonius intends, and to save you from being surprised by the barbarians. I am Alexander of Macedon.”
(Herodotus, The Histories, 9.45)
2) “Your ancestors came to Macedonia and the rest of Greece and did us great harm, though we had done them no prior injury. I have been appointed leader of the Greeks, and wanting to punish the Persians I have come to Asia, which I took from you…”
(Alexander’s letter to Persian king Darius in response to a truce plea, as quoted in “Anabasis Alexandri” by Arrian, Book II, 14, 4). Macedonia and the REST OF Greece…
3) “There are Greek troops, to be sure, in Persian service - but how different is their cause from ours! They will be fighting for pay - and not much of at that; we, on the contrary, shall fight for Greece, and our hearts will be in it.”
(Addressing his troops prior to the Battle of Issus, as quoted in Anabasis Alexandri by historian Arrian, Book II, 7)
Alexander the Great addressing the dead Greeks of the Battle of Chaeronea:
4) “Holy shadows of the dead, I’m not to blame for your cruel and bitter fate, but the accursed rivalry which brought sister nations and brother people, to fight one another. I do not feel happy for this victory of mine. On the contrary, I would be glad, brothers, if I had all of you standing here next to me, since we are united by the same language, the same blood and the same visions.”

@Dimitris Dervenis At no point in time was Macedonia or Macedonians ever Greek
While Demosthenes was still in exile, Alexander died in Babylon, and the Greek states combined yet again to form a league against Macedon.

Questions 1 and 4 (Rosetta stone and ancient Macedonian language respectively) are totally irrelevant to the modern ethnic Macedonian history. They are relevant to Greek history.
P.S. common folk in Macedonia also had Greek names. This is proven by the dozens of gravestones of non-royal people found in Macedonia.
