    The waters around England are some of the most dangerous in the world. The English channel in particular has a very fearsome reputation despite being narrow enough to see across with the naked eye in some places.
    It's so bad that during the D-day invasion of Normandy, with modern warships leading the way, optimal weather conditions, and despite being planned out by leaders that had lead hugely successful naval invasions of Africa, Sicily and Italy, they still managed to land one fifth of the invasion force on the wrong damn beach.

    Another interesting thing about the Spanish Armada is that one of the legends about the origin of the "Black Irish" comes from it.
    One of the stories claims that when the Spanish armada was limping back to Spain, numerous ships kept getting wrecked along the English and Irish Coasts. In Ireland the Spanish found the Irish Catholics, who also hated the English crown, were very sympathetic to their cause and actively hid and protected the stranded sailors and soldiers.
    Through their shared Catholic faith and hate toward the English, the two people began intermingling, marring and having kids. Soon dark haired and dark eyed Irish began appearing all over the island. These darker individuals became known as the "Black Irish".
    Not sure of the truth behind the story, but I always thought it was funny that this event is also associated with an Irish legend.

    Growing up in the UK, you generally get taught about the Spanish Armada. Nobody talks about the English Armada, though. • @tisFrancesfault
      @tisFrancesfault 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@tisFrancesfault they were unusual. I don't know if you realise but most people didn't go destroying coastal cities, most were farmers.
      You base your argument on the fact that the English crown fomented this kind of behaviour, and as such it wasn't uncommon in the high spheres...but that's hardly an excuse. It would be like saying none of the Japanese or Nazi generals were psycopaths. technically True, but it hides the fact that the own system favoured systemic cruelty.
      And I'd say burning a city just to elevate one respect is pretty inmoral...but I don't know maybe it's different where you're from?
      So though I wouldn't use the word sociopath (because It has an actual medical definition) I would say Francis Drake didn't pass on morality. Even at the time people were surprised by the rampant destruction.

    They also sent troops and a naval fleet to Kinsale Co. Cork to help the gaelige and old English/Norman's resist English rule and also a means of eventually invading England and placing a Catholic monarch on the Throne, it was also a diversion from the 80 years war.
    Anyway in short the Spanish and their Irish Allies lost because of a lack of communication and the fact that the smaller horses the Irish used put them at a disadvantage which causes them to retreat, then the Spanish upon hearing gunfire had thought the Irish had won so they opened the gate only to see the English right in front of them.
    The Spanish and some Irish people who had travelled with them were sent back to Spain and many of the rebels were either let off or executed.

    England sent two armadas much bigger than the spanish ones. Both were anihilated by small forces in battle, unlike the spanish ones which lost a few transport ships each time due to the storms, fleet always returning and being repared

      The armada fighting the english was encompanied with the 80 years war and futile attempts of Dudley to put the united provinces under more english influence. Naval dominance in the english channel and north sea of the spanish would put cities like Vlissingen, Vlaardingen, Rotterdam, Dortdrecht under a more direct threat of a siege. The reverse wouldnt happen either. The dutch navy supplied city of Ostende (lies on coast, far south in Belgium) while it was besieged from 1601 until 1604.

      Phillip was planning to depose Elizabeth and replace her with a Catholic puppet ruler, with Mary Queen of Scots being the main candidate. English history could genuinely have unfolded quite differently had he succeeded. The English Armada was only supposed to seize and loot a few port cities to stop Spanish attempts to rebuild their navy, and give Britain naval superiority in the Atlantic, so not quite as ambitious. It could potentially have endangered Spain's New World empire, though.
