    Egg: "I need card draw" - ignores Acrobatics
    Egg: "I don't have enough block" - takes exclusively attacks
    Egg: "Stacking poison seems great" - skips the most powerful poison synergies
    Egg: "I should get rid of some basic attacks" - doesn't use card removal when offered
    Egg: "Bullet Time is amazing" - already has enough energy to play everything drawn
    Egg: "I need to get ahead of the curve" - discards Dexterity
    What a series.

      he already fucked that up last episode by not taking catalyst

    • @merclegis3429
      @merclegis3429 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In the first episode he passed up an early Catalyst and Corpse Explosion from the boss. With Bouncing Flask 12 damage x 3 for Catalyst x 3 for Corpse Explosion = 108 damage to the whole enemy party and even more if he uses other poisons, gets another Catalyst, or Burst.
      He has Well-Laid plans to retain two cards each round until he's enabled enough poison and would be easy to cycle if his deck wasn't such a mish mash.
      Noxious Fumes and Envenom would get wrecked by the Awakened One who gains Strength from Powers and Envenom only does Poison damage to enemies you hurt which is one of the advantage of Poison of easily culling high armor targets. Flask's four Poison procs is enough to get through targets with 3x Artifact or three targets with 1x Artifact. Just some thoughts

      After he acknowledged it, he takes the next three attack cards. He simply cannot stop himself from picking cards. He doesn't understand the innate power of skip.

    • @ellefsoneric
      @ellefsoneric 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      indeed. you dont want more than a few attacks in the deck. you want card draw/discard, energy generation and combo pieces. everything else can be accomplished by cycling through your deck.

    • @iami3rian394
      @iami3rian394 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      He can't can't resist feeling like it's a "reward" for combat. Take the gold and the potions, leave the cards. He just doesn't seem to understand how much better a 16 card deck is than a 32 card deck.
      He's also fond of grabbing anything that's "a slightly better strike" so he ends up with 20 or so of essentially the same card. He then wonders why he can't get to anything worth while.

    • @lamiaprincess6371
      @lamiaprincess6371 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I agree, skipping is huge in this game as a bloated deck just increases the variance you see on a turn to turn basis.
      Now, mind you, taking cards can often be the right decision too. I do sort of disagree with the idea that a very small deck is ideal (because of how much opportunity cost can be lost by spending gold to remove cards), and I think an ideal deck is more around 20 cards with potential more leeway depending. Draw + energy builds absolutely can get away with it, and cards like Backflip, Heel Hook, Adrenaline, and Outmanuveur are almost always auto grabs for me.
      But I also think NL has made some decent decisions when he passed up cards like Deadly Poison earlier on, so he is learning slowly. (Was that a different video? They all kind of blur together)

    • @mateusz7953
      @mateusz7953 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MineStoneCraftAMine But is it? With the smaller deck you not only can get your best cards more often, but you also decrease the chances of getting the 'same' (as in: effect) cards and you have a much greater control over your deck. It's actually pretty easy to cycle through your deck (when it's not too big) to pick just the right card for the right situation when there is so many low/no cost draw cards.

    • @Ciclopotis
      @Ciclopotis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well, evidently he doesn't take enough time because he still manages to misplay. Slay the Spire, like many, if not all, card-based games, isn't a "high octane action" game, you need to calculate values in order to succeed consistently. I'm fairly certain most people who watch games like this know that, so taking a bit extra time in order to not misplay horribly is a fair tradeoff.

  • @BoiledRiceCake
    @BoiledRiceCake 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    Hey you beautiful eggperson, I acquiesce you like poison builds, but focusing on it can be a gamble because you need some specific powers and artifacts to make them shine. The trick is to keep your deck compact and have enough blocks to stand your ground while the poison whittles away the enemy's HP. Getting lots of value offensive cards can be a tempation, but is also a trap if you're trying to make a synergy work. Having a hand full of attacks on no way to mitigate damage is also ranked very high on the list of death causes for Shyboi, I mean, The Silent.

    • @masonk4283
      @masonk4283 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yo I'm in agreement here. I finally won a run on The Silent by focusing mainly on defensive cards. It's kind of weird to think about building The Silent very defensively and playing the attrition game considering he supposed to be like an assassin in an MMO (the hit hard and fast guys). But when I play him slowly I usually get the best results. (unless it's the Gremlin 😠 )

      Still haven’t played this game, so genuinely curious: should he have been removing strikes? It seemed by the end he was picking up 1-cost strike replacements that were strictly better. Were there any other cards good for dropping?

    • @iami3rian394
      @iami3rian394 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Strikes to defend 2-1 is a terrific ratio of removal.
      You need to make room for the good cards (and don't just pick something up because it's slightly better). The idea is that you want a few GREAT cards in your deck, so every turn you're playing hard hitting cards, not every fifth turn if you're lucky, like what he's doing.
      The Silent gets better draw and energy than Ironclad, that's why he always has so much trouble with Ironclad runs. You just CAN'T play a 30 card deck in a reasonable amount of time, and if you draw nothing but attacks when you need defense and defense when no one is attacking you get wrecked.

    • @giannispolychronopoulos2680
      @giannispolychronopoulos2680 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One of the most important things to take into account while constructing a deck in any card game is consistency. You want to have as few cards as possible in your deck, so that you can see the absolute best ones as often as possible. Strikes and defenses this late in the game are pure garbage, that’s why you should go out of your way to remove them

    • @iami3rian394
      @iami3rian394 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bobby.... we're talking about Ironclad here, for one thing, not the Silent.
      Secondly, I'm not calling you out or anything, but yeah. You didn't have a 53 card deck, that doesn't exist. I'd break it down into ten starting cards, 3 boss fights etc... but you know that you didn't pick up that many cards and win.
      Everyone knows it. No way you're even pretending it's an Ironclad run, which makes the entire fairy tale irrelevant.
      Moving along, Giannis is exactly right. There's nothing more to be said about it, unless you want to construct a make believe story like our friend Bobby.
      More to the point, you start with ten cards, and there's 51 rooms (counting boss fights) so this moron child is obviously lying. In order to have 53 cards he never EVER rested, succeeded at all matches with the goblin memory game etc.
      Clown's lying (obviously) so just ignore him. = )

    • @iami3rian394
      @iami3rian394 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Right, except you lost.
      I'm not arguing your ability to accrue every card in the game. It's easily done.
      You didn't win because you were holding 25 useless cards on the second boss fight.
      Nice try mate. Possible isn't "yo look what I just did."

  • @Card_Quest
    @Card_Quest 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey NL, My run with The Silent went smoothly when I stacked a lot of defense cards and mechanics with poison effects. The silent is meant to be played much slower and way tankier. Also, it is okay to completely tank up and do no dmg for a turn as The Silent in order to save HP and let the poison and other effects do their work.

    NL your problem with the Silent is that you pick poison cards, which are sustained damage cards, but no cards to defend yourself like blur or stuff like that. Either you go all out and pick high damage value low defense cards (Die Die Die, Finisher, Choke) like I like to do, or you have to make a suitable build for poison to work in. Not every card that has the poison tag in it is going to be automatically awesome just because it fits with your deck archetype, sometimes you NEED to pick out some cards you really need

    "Let's keep heel hook, so maybe we can use it for once" NL said this about 5 times, most of which the enemy was weak...

    I hope these comments actually help you, I love watching you get better, but these sub optimal plays really hurts to watch sometimes.
    1. NEVER gamble on getting the cards you want from calculated gamble or card draws. If you do, you're lucky, but luck can only get one so far.
    2. Please learn to prioritize card order. You keep catching yourself in the middle of the play, and this is leading to extremely inefficient plays with the chokes and trips.
    3. CREATE A PLAY STYLE EARLY!!!! This deck was extremely weird. You had a mix of long term damage w/ extremely high burst damage and no defense. If you were going for burst damage never take endless agony and utilities as they just stuff your deck with extra cards. Ignore poison damage and go straight for attacks like riddle with holes and sweeping blades. If you wanted to play the long game, take caltrops, defensive cards like Dodge and Roll/Blur/Escape Plan, and ignore damaging cards in favor for draws to get that crucial block or weaken. Having this mixed bag of a deck led to dips in damage that just didn't kill fast enough and didn't have enough defense to mitigate damage. You also had waaaay too many weakening cards. Imagine if the second neutralize was a noxious fumes+ instead? or take that Sucker Punch and change it into a second bullet time. Look for cards that are crucial to your deck instead of picking the one that helps short term.
    4. Know your damage! I feel like this should be number one, but tbh i feel like you already know this NL. Hover the card over the enemy to see the damage that will be dealt to get a more accurate representation of your damage. Also calculate vulnerable if you have cards like trip and weakness. For instance the triple Bird Cultists encounter: First turn 9+9+6+8=32 damage and 8*4=32 Finisher damage so take 49-32=17 then 17-8-9=0 which would have killed the bird with 3 wasted poison damage. The remaining 14 damage could have gone into another bird and saved you 9-12 HP points. (This is also a sub optimal play, but i had to make a quick example)
    5. Energy Calculation, draws, and discards: Optimize your plays. The wasted Shiv in the Healer/Defender Fight, the wasted block during the Parasite fight. All these need to be optimized please slow down and calculate.

    The hand you died with tells such a story about undervaluing card removal. You were stuck with 3 strikes that could do nothing to help you out. I think card draw would have been really strong in that deck.

    The Huntress is only hard on the first floor. NL, you egg.....stack card drawl, and poison cards. Dont worry about strikes. Like poison stab and noxious fumes are amazing. But focus on defense, and card drawl, and point, and its easy mode.

    The only poison card you need to win is Envenom, and then just fill your deck with energy generation and card draw so you can stack it up on enemies by hitting them a dozen times each turn.

      Imagine having a conversation with yourself, while being recorded, and never messing up any of your plays ever. It's already hard enough to self-evaluate because you don't notice the mistakes you make yourself otherwise you wouldn't have made them in the first place.

    I feel like NL underuses cards like Endless Agony. It seems to me they're better late game because they duplicate themselves when you draw them, so it's better to use them as discard outlets or save them for later so you can just play out like 10 endless agonies in one explosive turn and should spend the rest of your turns setting up vulnerable or buffing strength so you can deal more damage with them.

  • @LeetMasterAce

    Based on what I've seen of both classes from NL, the Ironclad's innate of healing after each combat seems WAAAY stronger than Silent's. Maybe if Silent drew an extra card every turn or gained extra gold after each battle to balance out the IC's constant, free resource replenishment.

    at about 22:00, you should have focused on the main enemy while blocking since that enemy type makes more enemy's. it makes your situation worse to not attack the main enemy since you risk not drawing block on a turn in an attack focused deck.

    “A card full of seven hands”

  • @JaMaAuWright
    @JaMaAuWright 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    At the very least you have internalized upping your dexterity before blocking, this is good progress. However, skipping the second footwork card (dex +2) was a foolish move in my opinion. For 1 energy, you improve all of your blocks by +2 for the rest of combat. That kind of effect is worth having around multiple times, especially when it comes to longer fights like elite encounters and boss enemies.
    As you yourself stated a few times in the episode however, turn order is something you still need to work on, particularly with cards like Choke that have special effects that activate upon playing subsequent cards. I find it much easier to keep things in mind by doing the gameplay equivalent of rubber duck programming, explain the order of events verbally before you play out your hand, including every extra effect that should take place when you play a card, and finish off by explaining the cards that you're *not* using and why. If you do this enough for a while it gets easier to organize turn order in your head. Keep a calculator on hand if you don't want to do math in your head, because doing the math can mean the difference between victory and defeat in this game.
    Lastly, you're running into block problems because you're letting your decks get too big my dude. 30 should be the absolute upper limit for a deck, and if you find yourself approaching that number, you should endeavor to get rid of some base strikes or defends.
