Eiger west flank, the easiest route

  • Eiger is one of the most famous summits in the Alps. This almost 4,000 meter peak is best known for its North Face, called Nordwand in German. It offers many routes to the summit, the most popular of these passes via the Mittellegi ridge which is the historic route characterized by vertiginous passages throughout the ascent. The most infamous and the most challenging is the North Wall route with its speed record of 2 hours 22 minutes 50 seconds established by Ueli Steck in 2015.
I have always been impressed by all the climbers reaching the top of this imposing mountain. The idea of climbing the latter solo began to formulate in my head. However to realise this dream I needed to gain more experience on solo ascents. After several solo summits and in particular that of the Wetterhorn, I finally felt ready.
I'm not a big rock climber so my choice naturally fell towards the western flank route which is rarely frequented. I would like to share here with you my challenge and the unforgettable adventure.
Please watch the video and experience the amazing journey with me.

This is an honest down to earth, exceptional well made video of an 'ordinary' guy who wants to do something exceptional. It is not one who has climbed the North face in under two hours using a pogo stick, or the first to walk on a tight rope from Eiger to Monch. Privilege to share your experience, albeit on a video.

I share your analysis. What counts is not a sporting achievement, but the feelings that everyone can live by realizing their 'simple and achievable' dreams.
My goal is not to set any records, I am not a top athlete. For someone who never walks, walking 5 kilometers could feel like conquering Mount Everest. You just have to dare to do it. Thank you for this honest feedback.

Thank you for your comment. I'm really sorry to hear what happened to your father. I'm not here to give advice, I don't know if you already do mountaineering or want to do it, but to tackle the Eiger, even by the easiest of routes, you have to be very well prepared. On my video I move quickly without too much difficulty but in reality it was not so easy, especially alone. I wish you good luck to achieve your ambition but prepare yourself well and when you are on the way you can always stop and go back down if you don't feel confident, the mountain will always be there for another time.

I recall reading about that, we used to spend most summers in the alps. Your father was Willie? And that was the trip where John Barry (who wrote one of the finest books on alpine techniques) was seriously questioned and stripped of his guiding credentials. It must be hugely difficult for you to contemplate climbing The Eiger given the family tragedy but if you can, I hope you experience what no doubt drove your father to climb. I’ve done a handful of the 4000m peaks but never the Eiger. All I’d say is every single one will be a remarkable experience and the memory will stay with you forever. They may be expensive too, but the Swiss guides are excellent and they know the conditions better than anyone, not that you probably need me to tell you that.

My first trip to the Alps in 1979, I climbed the Western flank route, Smutt ridge and down the Hornli, then off to Mont Blanc catching the cable car to the mid station then up to the Vallot but returning the same way. What a great two weeks of my life. It inspired me to go back to Chamonix year after year, forty in all. I loved the Alps for climbing, mountaineering and running. Now I'm 68 with severe arthritis in my right hip, but I wouldn't change my former life for anything. Great video and thanks for brining back my youth.

Honestly -for a rated 5.3 hike -and the 100s of alpinists who have been forced into a nighttime decent of the west flank after a Mittellegi or North Face climb, I was a little surprised by this detail on your video -some of those west flank spots look sketchier and more perilous than I would have thought.

CONGRATULATIONS ! in the way you transmit the spirit, of what I understand by mountaineering, is really honest and genuine. You even demonstrates by answering all the comments, an unusual human quality.
I am 50 years old and almost all my life doing mountaineering. the activity that most moves me in this life of artifices and disconnection with nature. The event of his has exalted me and given me great inspiration, something like the "heroic imposition and the unfathomable dimension". I live in Switzerland although I am Spanish. As I write I can see the south face of the Eiger in the distance and every day I wonder if I will seriously be able to reach the top. I did the trek and I have been very close several times, being able to contemplate the irresistible call of that mass.
I would be very grateful if you could give me a brief description of the technical material that you need and what is essential to undertake the attempt.
Thank you very much for such a valuable document and for disseminating its content. A real treasure for a mountaineer like me, active and lonely.

For anyone considering this route, it's worth knowing that especially in recent years, the top sections of the West Flank are extremely chossy and full of loose rock that can be very very dangerous. Even if the climbing is not of a high grade, loose terrain can make it pretty scary especially on the descent. I soloed the route in the summer 2024 season and had a few "oh shit" moments near the summit. Prepare accordingly and have the proper gear/experience.

    • @never-too-late
      @never-too-late  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks for the heads-up! I would also advise taking a 60m rope to help secure the descent. It's always better to be prepared, especially in areas with loose rock and chossy conditions. Stay safe out there!

Bravo Never too late !

Absolute legend, i am 18 and keep myself very fit. I live 3 hours from the eiger in switzerland snd i dont think i would be mentally strong enough to complete this, especially solo. Ton of respect.

ON THE MAP OF EACH OF OUR HUMAN HEARTS ... there are so many ways to the summits of this life we attack. For some, we take the hard, dangerous and unforgiving way upwards. One step, one inch, one heartbeat at a time.
On the North Face, (de Nordwand) of the mighty Eiger, there are such places as the Hinterstoisser Traverse, The Death Bivouac and The White Spider that can end our adventures. All leading to the moment we have survived to marvel at the glorious summit.
For others, there is the easier route as exampled by ascending the accessible West Face.
But for any and all others who respect the mighty mountains in this life, literally or metaphorically, it's not necessarily the way up --
-- but rather, surviving the way down.
One false step, one frayed rope, will signal to the Goddess Mountains, we didn't respect ourselves, let alone our path homewards.
So, climb your mountains. Take your time.
The choice is yours to which path to take. Because at the end of the day, all we have left is the memories and a perhaps a few snapshots of our journey of self.
    D.A.

Thank you for this beautiful and touching comment. I agree with you, everyone has their way to the top or something else. It's up to us to choose.
