Sadly, Ueli Steck took his last climb about two years ago this month (April, 2017) at age 40. It is thought that he fell over 3,000' to his death in an acclimatization climb in preparation of climbing Mt. Everest again. It seems incredible that someone who was such a successful mountaineer would die on a mountain, but he MAY have been trying for speed in his last climb. Very sad, RIP. Ueli!

“The light that burns twice as bright, burns for half as long.”
Ueli’s death is a tragedy for his family, of course, but, in a way, he is connected to the rest of us too. He was one of those rare individuals who, by his example, inspired the more ordinary of us to be that bit better and exceed our self-imposed limitations. Human progress does not advance by accident; it needs torch bearers to show the way and we all owe Ueli our gratitude.

I guess that this speed thing for the sake of speed is a dead end for climbing, it's kind of disrespect for the seriousness of mountaineering. It's only reasonable if speed is there for increasing safety. But we all live in a marketing world and there are less and less goals to achieve.

In many ways Ueli Steck and the sport are the same -- in that we all loved or admired the man. Thank you Ueli and my condolences to the family & friends he shared his life with.

He means climbing it without taking undue risk. He was a very experienced climber, and what looks mind boggling to us, Ueli had done a thousand times before. It's like saying "drive safely". Driving is far from safe, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk of an accident.

There are many, many times when he is max THREE SECONDS away from a possibly INCREDIBLY PAINFUL DEATH . . . everything he ever knew disappears. All records, everything, gone. No sunrise tomorrow, no coffee warming your hand, no bird chirping. All gone for eternity.
      A wise man once said:
"Remember that courage and strength are nought without prudence, and that a momentary negligence may destroy the happiness of a lifetime.
"Do nothing in haste; look well to each step; and from the beginning think well what may be the end."

    • @kamakirinoko

Sam Dallas Sam, actually, the "wise man" was Edward Whymper, who was the first guy who climbed the Matterhorn (and four members of the climbing team died on the way down). Steck is a lunatic but there are other lunatics, especially that dude who likes to climb Yosemite with no ropes. One rock crumbles and he is climbing Lucifer's Nose.
