A 69 cm size bass is over 8lbs and not the best for eating, these are very old fish and are the breading stock for future generations. As catch and release is not an option in your sport would you consider taking 42cm to 55cm size fish as it would A. provide better sport for you being a smaller target and B. they are a far better fish for the table and C. Its a lot more sustainable.

The smaller ones have less worms and better meat Point B no, hunting the larger Bass is extremely challenging, they are very skittish and very hard to consistently find, usually you just see a glimpse of one as it spooks in the distance I actually plan to catch and release fish for them with livebait - although it’s not on TH-cam I’ve been line fishing for over two decades and really enjoy it
@@jackmetcalfe8542 you didn't actually answer his point, about the 8lb bracket being the more prolific breeders therefore taking smaller legal sized fish would ultimately lead to more eggs/fish for the future ,nobody's arguing they are probably harder to spear,but that's not the point he was making

Went in off the north Llyn last week in very similar conditions…got dropped by a boat,so an easy in…very shallow…not ONE SINGLE FISH seen…!…but,it was glorious,would’ve been nice to get back in the boat a hero,but,I AM a hero,coz them lot just sat in the boat !…We all missed a bit that day…but I’ll take it ! Don't let the useless comments get you down pal. I'll be at least one of the guys that appreciates the effort and work that goes in to finding the locations and on the day... though that first location is on the way to one of my favourite pollock marks. Some of the best ground in Britain. Cheers!

Great video jack! I love hunting in the shallows. I have seen more good sized bass in this video than all this year spearfishing in Dorset! Very jealous! More videos like this! Well done!
Another inspiring video Jack. My spearfishing has been very hit and miss this year, mainly due to conditions and been 2-3 hours away it’s difficult to time trips. One thing I think I’m doing wrong is not heading far enough away from known spots. Something I need to rectify, but it’s difficult to ‘risk’ the time prospecting a new area when you might only be up there for a day…. Ignoring the jealousy ones, and keep doing the videos 👍🏻 Cheers Steve
@@yamyamfishing I now live 2 hours drive from the marks and actually it’s made me shoot more fish, getting a trip in is so awkward now that once in the water I stay in a lot longer (4-6 hours usually) and don’t give up even if nothing for several hours
@@jackmetcalfe8542 fair point, but you’re much more experienced around Anglesea and the llyn so can afford to spend time prospecting knowing you have spots to drop back onto to poke a fish or two. I’ve just brought a kayak to hopefully open up some marks further away, and to also do a bit of rod n line fishing off. Don’t forget the offer of some Zander fishing once we get to autumn. Got a new finder to try out, and hopefully get us on a few fish 🎣
Hi Jack. I watch your videos because I am an angler and am therefore as interested as you are about where to find Bass and how they live. I suspect lots of your viewers are also not spear fishers and might feel upset because they either fish catch and release only, take only fish above the legal limit but below larger 'breeding' weight, or are 'fishmongers' who will take everything they can get and just hate anyone else taking any fish at all. As far as I can see you are not breaking the law and so a difference of opinion about these things should remain just that. I would like to ask however, why you choose to take fish of seven pounds and above in preference to smaller fish. I'm thinking about the importance of so-called 'Big Old Fat Fecund Females' that some researchers have identified as being particularly important for breeding success. What we all share whether we support it or not, is an interest in the long term success of the Bass population and I wonder if it might help to keep the comments section a little more civil if you could talk about your choices from this point of view. I've seen you a time or two while I've been out and about but haven't said hello yet. I hope that you might not mind if I did. kind regards Dave

It’s always great to meet other fishermen Whether to take bigger fish or not is an understandable debate, and is certainly one of the difficulties of Spearfishing Personally I find shooting a couple of 50cm Bass so easy (you can see in my videos just how many bass are present around N Wales) that I prefer to wait and be extremely selective, it’s about the challenge of the sport Larger Bass may appear easy to shoot in my videos but this really isn’t the case, they are extremely skittish and most spearos never even see them In all honesty I think Bass of around 4lb are the best eating, and when line fishing it’s nice to release anything other than the prime table fish

Really like the technical tips on the this video in the shallows. Too often I will head to the depths. I'm whatching too many of the you tube videos made from Cornish and Australian bred, also well travelled spearos, I think. 😊 I should have learned from my shore fishing on the same/similar beaches you highlighted in the video. While others are casting to the horizon for bass. A litlle rig a few meters out catches bass, as the night and tide draws in. Great video Jack.

Jack you seem like a knowledgeable and decent guy..so dont take this the wrong way...Don't forget you are giving away other people's marks here too, not just your own. Shooting fish at larger sizes means you are depriving them the chance to spawn and produce more bass (potentially ones we might all catch at some point). How many bass do you need to eat ???!! No problem with what your doing, but please consider what your showing in the videos. Take care.
@@Ayeeye76 as I said in the audio, the mark where fish are seen is not the one that is shown above the surface… Despite all my videos I’ve yet to see another spearo or even line angler this season!!
